“You sneaked into Sea Gate Fortress and carried off its Empress and you don’t have a plan?”

This book is the 4th in the series and having not read the previous books, I was a little concerned that I might be lost. But it didn’t take long to realize The Redoubt could stand on its own. The story line is unique in that the king’s sons – one who prefers to wear women’s clothing and the other a wanna-be priest who is convinced his father has darkness in his heart – are something of a headache for the king...and pretty much the entire kingdom.
The pace of the story moves somewhat slower than what I normally read, with the main character not meeting his ‘empress in need of rescue’ until the last 30 percent of the book. There is a lot of what anime fans would call filler. It is interesting and entertaining filler, albeit I did feel that it took away from the momentum of the story.
The dialogue was well written with plenty of humorous and ‘creative’ name calling. The final duel between the hero and villain was hilarious, once I understood it. The Redoubt paints an interesting world where some of the quietest characters are the most powerful.

Entertaining and easy to read continuation the King Bewilliam's attempts as King to hold his lands together despite famine and bad weather. Ending begs for another sequel.

While this is the first time I've read a book in this particular genre, I must say it was very well done. Devorah Fox has a great grasp of Old English, dragons, and gryphons, and she knows how to weave them into fantastic tales! I found the book fascinating with a great ending.

Another terrific Bewilliam Book

This is the best yet in an outstanding series. I just could not put it down. There are a plethora of stories within the book's story itself. Really amazing how the author wove them into the fabric of the overall storyline. I won't deny the reader the entertainment by describing these stories. Suffice it to say, this novel gets better, more intriguing, and entertaining as one progresses through it. I am an avid reader and this honestly is a terrific read. I must admit, a novice but soon-to-be Bewilliam reader will be well advised to read all the books. You will not regret it! King Bewilliam continues to get better and better. In my humble opinion, the stage is set for Number Five. Yay!
