This is an autobiography of one of the heroes of a state belonging to one of the most brutal settler-colonial countries in the modern era. While narrating his life story, he chronicles the genesis and youth of his racist state, but in a marketing-like style with an overwhelmingly angelic tone.

A reader unburdened by any prior knowledge of Israel's history and its conflict with the Arabs can only be impressed by Moshe's account of that state's history, its founding struggle, its bravery in war, its desire for peace, and its tolerance towards its Palestinian neighbors!... amidst waves of hate-filled, hostile peoples... This is what you would understand and be convinced of if you were an illiterate reader regarding the history of that gang.

Moshe Dayan was born in Ottoman Palestine in 1915 to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Ukraine. He quickly joined the Haganah gangs and participated in most of Israel's major wars with the Arabs, serving as Minister of Defense in some of them, like the '67 and '73 wars... There is no doubt that he was a witness, participant, and leader in many of the atrocities, crimes, and massacres of this entity... But you will find no trace of that in this whitewashed biography... Instead, you find a state that only fights in self-defense, and when it holds the keys to Jerusalem, it does not prevent the rights of Arabs and Muslims but grants them complete freedom – a freedom that Jews were denied when Jerusalem was under Arab rule!.. Of course, anyone who believes this false history need only look at today's news to know the truths of the past and the future... especially with an entity built on forgery and deception.

It is no wonder what Moshe wrote in this biography – which is, by the way, enjoyable in its style – but the wonder lies in the calamity that has befallen the Arabs in their rulers, kings, and presidents; they range from traitors to fools..
Look, for example, at what the Arab rulers did in 1948 with Palestine. Consequently, half of Palestine's population was displaced, and the Jews occupied 78% of the land of Palestine, after they had actually owned only 7% and after the United Nations had ruled for them to have 55% of Palestine's area.
And do not ask about the Naksa (Setback), when Nasser declared something akin to war in May '67, so Israel occupied in June of the same year: Sinai and Gaza from Egypt, the Golan from Syria, and Jerusalem and the West Bank from Jordan!!
Then go to October '73: after the startling, resounding Arab victories at the beginning of the war, Sadat intervened in the plan, causing the Egyptian forces to suffer heavy losses, and Israel seized the initiative after being in a state of terrified defeat.
So, I don't know: are these rulers working for the benefit of the Arabs or for the benefit of Israel.

Moshe Dayan was one of Israel's greatest military heroes and political leaders.
He commanded the Israeli forces that won the Suez War of 1956, and directed the Israeli victory in the Six Day War forced on Israel by Arab nations in 1967.
Dayan served as the Israel Army Chief of Staff from 1953 to 1958, Minister of Agriculture from 1959 to 1964, and Minister of Defence from 1967 to 1974.
He was blamed, and reviled, by many Israelis for Israel's disastrous lack of preparation before being attacked by Arab armies in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Here he discusses his life but particularly the wars of Israel's survival from the War of Independence to the Yom Kippur War and the resultant political fallout are described in detail. He begins by describing his kibbutz boyhood in Degania, Israel, and his early involvement in the Jewish defence militia in the then Palestine Mandate, the Haganah. Here we read about the ravages of pre-state Israel by the early Arab terrorist movement in the 1930s, the ruthless Kassimiya, named after terrorist pioneer Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, after which the murderous military wing of Hamas is today named. He discusses his imprisonment by the British authorities and his part in World War II in the a Jewish Palestine division of the British army after his release in 1941. Fighting in Lebanon and Syria against the Vichy French, where he lost his eye.
He describes his heroic role in the 1948 War of Independence. The Suez War and the diplomatic and political machinations behind it including the gross hypocrisy of the Soviets who had just raped Hungary and massacred it's people. Yet on November 5 1956, Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin sent rocket-rattling threats to the prime ministers of France , Britain and Israel. The dispatch to Ben-Gurion expressed Soviet Russia's 'unqualified condemnation of the criminal acts of the aggressors' against Egypt and demanded Israel stop the military operations at once and withdraw from Egyptian territory. The letter added that the 'whole of peace-loving humanity condemned Israel which was 'acting as an instrument of external imperialistic forces' Shades of the rhetoric of the leftwing media and universities today and a great foreshadow of their hypocrisy is it not?

During his account of the Yom Kippur War Dayan describes how the Soviet News Agency Tass actually gave a false version of reports that Israel had started the war! The anti-Israel media of today had mentors!
I think Dayan is too generous in his assessment of Henry Kissinger, who deliberately urged Nixon not to help Israel after she was attacked in 1973, saying the USA should 'let the Israelis bleed a little'. He also describes Golda Meir's popularity among American Jews, quite saddening to think of how liberal American Jews today have disgracefully abandoned Israel, out of fashionable expediency

Dayan shows his wisdom with statements like 'Dreams could be very pleasant but one had to live with reality'

He ends the autobiography by describing the vision of Israel, the eternal bond of Israel to the Jewish people, and the duty of Israelis to live up to the vision of a pioneering society and enjoy the fruits of the country's own labour 'A courageous state prepared to fight to the death to defend itself, a people of ideas and ideals striving to achieve its national historic purpose-the revival of the Jewish nation in it's homeland'.
The descriptions of military campaigns is a must read for any enthusiast of military history.

Dayan describes how the Soviets and their proxies armed the Arabs with massive modern armaments free of charge in order to try to destroy Israel.
During his account of the Yom Kippur War Dayan describes how the Soviet News Agency Tass actually gave a false version of reports that Israel had started the war! The anti-Israel media of today had mentors!

He also describes Golda Meir's popularity among American Jews, quite saddening to think of how liberal American Jews today have disgracefully abandoned Israel, out of fashionable expediency.
Among the best chapters in the book was the chapter of the terrorist atrocities by the bloodthirsty Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in 1974 at Kiryat Shmona in which 18 Israelis , of which eight were children were murdered and Maalot where 105 Jewish children were taken hostage by terrorists grenades and automatic weapons. They killed 22 children and wounded 68 more . Dayan describes his contact with wounded survivors on the scene of the massacre.
After their defeat in the Yom Kippur War of 1973 the Arab realized they could never defeat Israel in a conventional war, embarked ona diabolical twin campaign of terror against Israeli civilians (mainly targeting women and children) and the largest most venomous propaganda campaign in history with the willing aid of the new left which is reaping its evil fruits today in the demonization and de legitimization of Israel, accompanied by the economic genocide waged known as Boycott, Divestment and Sanction, so much a part of today's climate.

Dayan shows his wisdom with statements like 'Dreams could be very pleasant but one had to live with reality'

he was fond of Israel, lived his live chasing and protecting land which he didn't belong to.. he believed the lie and lived to protect it.. but once and for all, Palestine will forever be Palestine..
I liked to read the book because Moshe dayan's life is in a way or another goes on the same pattern with the birth of what is called Israel..
but those horrible lies and justification to all of their bloody acts, robbery, taking over lands and lives, fraudulence and awful pretending, without any feeling of shame or guilt made me sick !!
I can't deny that they made a great job by making this Israel with all of it's progress and complete life even it came with blood and sword, money and power.. but those people who make me sick always, because they live on blood and flesh of other people, made a great job iin no time !
Thanks to MAMA America :(

An excellent book that tells the history of Israel through the perspective of one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century.

Admittedly, the book took longer for me to read that most of Dayan's military campaigns put together, but that's due to the richness of the book's content with his fascinating insight on what happened and why it happened.

The life of Moshe Dayan is indeed very interesting. By reading it one gets to understand much better the historical and political issues involved in the isralei - palestinian question and how this matter got entangled with most of the 20th century geopolitical evolution. Moshe Dayan was a natural born soldier, being involved with the zionist undercovered military machine since his teens. His rise to power was connected to the clear leadership he exerted on his soldiers, and not to political arrangements. In this sense Dayan was always among his soldiers, much more a "primus inter pares" than an unreachable strategist that sees battle from a map room. The book is very sincere and in many points he opens his heart and one can see the joy (as for example in the episode of the liberation of Jerusalem) and sadness (when he talks about the dead young officers during the yom kippur war). It is important to notice, however, that despite being such a telented soldier, one can not say that Dayan succeeded as a politician. His mandate as Minister of Agriculture receives almost no atention in the book and one can see that his heart was not at it. Other episodes that deserved more atention, like the Lavon affair and the creation of Rafi are quite superficially touched.

The story of the life of Moshe Dayan parallels the story of modern day Israel. They are essentially one and the same.

Born in Palestine in 1915, Moshe Dayan has complete understanding of the history of the region and very ably relates that information to his readers.

This book recounts the bitter struggle for nationhood and for the survival of the young fledgling nation of Israel from Arab enemies all around it who would like nothing more than to utterly destroy Israel and the Jews.

It's been several decades since Israel has been in an all-out war for survival, but constant harassment from terrorists continues with alarming regularity.

I fully recommend this book for all who wish to learn more about the fulfillment of God's promise to restore Israel as a nation, the actual event taking place in 1948.

Bunch of lies and egoism ! He disregarded a lot of historical facts during the whole Arab- Israeli conflict and magnified minor nonsense acts.
Der Yasin Mascara
Dishonoring the egyptian captives during the 6 days war-1967 before killing all of them in the desert with cold blood (some were burried alive- documented)
Kantara - East battle
Capturing of Assaf Yaguri ( Commander of tanks battalion) during the tanks battle on the 8th of October 1973

He mentioned that Israel replied to the sinking of Eilat destroyer by sinking 2 egyptian corvettes. Never read about this in any historical book !!

If Israel have won Youm Kippur day in Sinai it would have never retreated an inch as the current case at Gulan heights.

Moshe Dayan shares his account of early life on a kibbutz, of joining the Hagganah at age 14, his time as a political prisoner, the Israeli Independence War, the Suez Crisis, his relationship with David Ben Gurion, his observations of the Veitnam Conlflict, the Six-day War, and Yom Kippur War. Toward the final fifty pages it seems that Dayan is presening "his side of the story", due to the criticism he came under after the Yom Kippur War.

Per friends in the West Bank his family still owns over 300 archeological treasures (ivory) Dayan stole from Sebastia.

My Amazon review May 3, 2017: There at the Birth

Superb look at the history of Israel through the eyes of one of the pivotal figures from the critical years of 1947-1974. Anyone wanting an understanding of how modern Israel rose from and through those formative events (the War of Independence, the Sinai Crisis, the 6-Day War and Yom Kippur) woud be well-served by Dayan's book. I still remember as a 12-year old in America in 1967 the photos of the great Moshe Dayan in Time and Life magazines after the 6-Day War and the youthful amazement at events I had little to no grasp of. This is not a highly introspective work, although you will learn much of his thoughts and motivations. Perhaps the external events were more than enough to explain. The picture that emerges of Dayan is of a man with great humanity and with sympathy and respect for his Arab opponents. I suppose that some biographies may call him arrogant or something but this is the work of a man with humility as well. Highly recommended for the student of Israeli and Middle East history and a period that will be looked back on as the birth of the nation of Israel.

One of the greatest general in the history. A man of sheer will to defend the Promised Land, Israel. His love for his country and great intellect in war made the whole world regarded him one of the pillars in the formation of a young Israel. Moshe Dayan deserves respect and great honor. His legacy as Minister of Defense, defending Israel especially in the Yom Kippur War shall be remembered. The Great Moshe Dayan - Unconquerable Indeed.

I wanted to read about the person Moshe Dayan. Instead I got 650 military history book without a single citation. Critical moments in Dayan’s life - like the death of his moth or brother or even his divorce and remarriage are treated as half paragraphs in the diatribe of military jargon. Interesting person nonetheless.

This memoir is not only important for all the historical details that it reveals (from an Israeli pov ofc), but also, what it decides to stay silent about. Derrida was right, every biography is a matter of framing a certain truth, i.e an act of Power.

Fascinating though sometimes a bit of repetition. I felt it was a privilage to be on this life journey as told I think with great honesty by the author (a book to read irrespective of the political views of the reader in what is currently this very sad time for this troubled region)

I really admired his courageous success and, what I considered as Kurd, how should we build our future on the bases of our inheritance in this land, unfortunately That we miss in our leadership.

I just finished reading Story of My Life by Moshe Dayan. The book is fascinating.

I am quite familiar with the back-story of the Zionist settlement of what is now the State of Israel. I find the tale inspiring each time I read about it. He was born, if I remember correctly, around 1911 in Ottoman-empire controlled Palestine. He was one of the original Sabras, or Jews born in what is now Israel, that made it to national leadership.

He famously lost his eye in a military accident in the early 1940s. Nevertheless, his role in the 1948 and 1956 Wars was heroic and his role as Israel's Defense Minister in the 1967 rout of the Arab forces legendary. He does not come out looking so well in the 1973 War, but as he points out the international situation had decidedly tipped against Israel during that period. In 1967 Israel was still the darling of many of the countries in the world, though France had started shifting from being an ally of Israel to neutrality in favor of the Arabs. By then Algeria had gained independence and many of their people, along with other Arabs didn't hang around for the "fun." During the period between 1967 and 1973 the Soviet Union began adventuring in the area. Further, by 1973 world oil supplies had tightened, even before the "Arab oil embargo." Thus, Dayan's freedom of action was limited.

Dayan, as the author, obviously portrayed himself in the best light possible, certainly with regard to his limited discussion of his personal life. Other accounts do not paint a rosy picture. That being said, a leader in a country as embattled as Israel, and of a people who have had it as tough as the Jews, tend not to be saints.

On the positive side, he highlights his interest in archaeology and nature. The epilogue (spoiler alert) is particularly moving. I highly recommend this book.
