About the author
Robert Munsch
279 books1,685 followersRobert Munsch was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Fordham University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and from Boston University in 1971 with a Master of Arts degree in anthropology.
He studied to become a Jesuit priest, but decided he would rather work with children after jobs at orphanages and daycare centers. In 1973, he received a Master of Education in Child Studies from Tufts University. In 1975 he moved to Canada to work at the preschool at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. He also taught in the Department of Family Studies at the University of Guelph as a lecturer and as an assistant professor. In Guelph he was encouraged to publish the many stories he made up for the children he worked with.
Munsch's wife delivered two stillborn babies in 1979 and 1980. Out of the tragedy, he produced one of his best-known books, Love You Forever. This book was listed fourth on the 2001 Publishers Weekly All-Time Best selling Children's Books list for paperbacks at 6,970,000 copies (not including the 1,049,000 hardcover copies). The Munsches have since become adoptive parents of Julie, Andrew and Tyya (see them all in Something Good!)

He has recovered enough that he is able to perform live, but has put his writing career on hold until he is fully recovered.

Christopher decides to play a small trick on both his parents. Creating a giant cookie out of play clay, Christopher presents one to both his mother and father, watching to see how they will react. When they take a bite and spit it out, Christopher knows his trick has worked to perfection. However, when the tables are turned on him at school, Christopher is not so sure about this 'cookie out of play clay' idea, after all. Neo enjoyed yet another Munsch book, laughing at all the silly antics of the story and the detailed illustrations. He knows never to feed me any play clay cookies, as he knows he'll have to join in, bite for bite!

Jake's Review: Mom, I really like the pictures in this one. Each time I read it I find new things in the picture that I didn't notice before. Can we buy some of the artists paintings, they are much better than those animal pictures you have all over the house. It kinda bugs me when he Mr Munsch uses all those sound effect words like scritch-scritch and Glick-Glick in his books. Although, I think I would like to hear him read it out loud. I like the practical joke he plays on everyone, it really makes me laugh. The book is way too short though and I really feel hungry for a cookies now. I also like the recipe for play clay at the beginning of the book, can we make some now -- and umm than bring some "cookies" down to daddy and Jesse.

After seeing Munsch read to kids, I now imagine his voice and expressions every time I read one of his books. This isn't one of my top 10 of his, but it is still a fun story that any kid would love to hear. The illustrations are beyond wonderful and I agree with Jake that everytime you look at Martchenko's work you find something new. The author and illustrator really have a nice connection with each other. Now, I must keep Jake away from the ingredients for play clay -- because my boy would sooooo do what the kid in the story did!

Mmm, Cookies! by Robert N. Munsch. This story is about Christopher. Christopher makes clay play cookies and tries to give the cookies to his mother and father. He first does it to his mother and then he does it to his father both parents eat the cookies and immediately go to the bathroom and wash their mouth out. When he gets to school, his teacher plays the same prank on him so he can feel like his parents felt. He then goes to wash his mouth out. In the end, the class makes a huge real cookie. He brings his piece of real cookie home for his parents to eat. This could be used to show students a need to “research” before giving a gift or accepting a gift. That way they do not just take anything from anyone. This book in some ways contradicted itself so that made me think that it might not have been a good idea. His teacher did exactly what he did and she was made to seem like she did not to a wrong thing. It was only because she was teaching him a lesson. But that to kids could still be confusing and they can think if the teacher did it they can too.

If you're looking for an off-the-wall plot and effervescent characters, there is no better choice than Robert Munsch's picture books. Mmm, Cookies! is yet another hilarious tale that ensures you'll never look at Play-Doh the same way again. Recommended for a read aloud, and it would be perfect for a model text on onomatopoeia.

This is a simple fun story. The pictures and even the "noises" that are written into the story are part of what makes it so much fun for young children. It even has a recipe for play clay in the book.

Mmm, Cookies!, is a silly story about a young boy named Christopher. In the story, Christopher finds play clay and decides to trick his Mom and Dad into thinking he made cookies. Christopher made the clay round, added sugar, covered it with icing, and finally put some raisins on top. When his Mom and Dad took a bite, they were surprised how yucky this clay cookie tasted. Christopher thought this was a funny prank, until his teacher left him a clay cookie to eat too. This book could be used in class to teach students that they should not play around and eat any of the clay or play-doh they used. It also teaches the student that sometimes pranks aren’t very nice. I wasn’t a huge fan of the illustrations in this book! Going off of that I wouldn’t want students to get the wrong idea about eating bad things.

Christopher, a young kid in the story, intends to bake cookies for his mother but quickly realizes that he is missing several essential ingredients. He goes out to the supermarket, but on the way, he comes across a number of bizarre folks who each add their own special ingredient to the dish. When he eventually makes it home with his supplies and bakes the cookies, his mother enjoys the weird but tasty mixture he created.
The book is a favorite among young readers thanks to its amusing plot and vibrant graphics, and its lesson on the value of improvisation and the joy of creation is helpful for teaching kids how to solve problems and think outside the box. A classic favorite phrase is now "Mmm, Cookies!" based on this book’s publication in 1997.

This little book was so funny!
Christopher made cookies out of "play clay" I have never heard play dough of sorts be called that before. Christopher made those cookies look delicious, if it was enough to fool his parents, they must have at least looked terrific!
But what you see isn't always the truth.
Those look like cookies, but they do NOT taste like cookies. Christopher probably could have tricked everyone.
It was funny how that teacher made the cookies the same way that Christopher did, and Christopher still fell for his own little trick.
The ending was hilarious since the whole class made a giant cookie.
His parents probably have major trust issues now, though.

I think reading Mmm, Cookies is fun! There is a lesson and some hilarious moments. One reason why you should read Mmm, Cookies is because you will learn a lesson. The lesson you will learn is that you should not trick someone because you can get tricked. For example, Christopher made fake cookies and then tricked people he knew into eating the fake cookies. Then he got tricked into eating a fake cookie. Another reason you should read the great book about fake cookies is because the book is HILARIOUS! It has RIDICULOUS sound effects. For example, when everyone was making fake cookies, there were a lot of sound effects like Whap,Swish,Chick,Glick and Plunk. In my opinion you should read Mmm, Cookies. After reading this book you will whisper "I love this book!"

This is probably one of my weirdest reviews, since I'm childless and 33, but I was in the bookstore and saw a Munsch book I hadn't read, "Mmmm, Cookies."
1 minutes later, I finished the story and was smiling. Definitely a fun one to read to kids, but also a quick little smile if you're sitting in a book store. So why 4/5 stars? Because the illustration, though amazing, is also flawed. The cookies are WAY to big and that took me, a 33 year old male, out of the story. Kids will likely not find a fault ;)

This is a funny picture book about a little boy who makes cookies out of play clay (recipe included for your little bakers) and feeds them to his family. When his teacher finds out she makes one for him, then he realizes it wasn't quite as funny as he thought. In the end the class makes real cookies. Of course the little boy makes his extra special and extra big for his family and friends to enjoy.

I love the story but I wish they had either thought about the cookie colours better, or called them pizzas. Because that’s what the current colour makes them look like and really confuses the little kids at the school I work at when I read them this book.

There's always one in the family who enjoys creative ways of tricking other family members. In this case the son manages to get both Mom & Dad. There is of course a comeuppance when his teacher is warned and she retaliates.

Full of excellent descriptive noices and a humorous plot, my 3 year old could listen to me read this at least 10 times a day. The child in me appreciates my Robert Munsch loving kid, but I wish me reading this book for the 100th time this week also came with cookies.

This book was a very cute, easy read. It teaches the lesson over the golden rule in a way that is almost unexpected. I enjoyed this book and would keep it in my classroom library.
