When the world listens only to the call of gold, redemption and love become scarce treasures.
Leaving behind her family and a dying father, Ginny Connor follows the cunning Logan Harris up North to strike it rich.
Twenty-year old Vivian Connor embarks on a cross-country chase to rescue her sister Ginny and they are both led into the chaos of the Klondike Gold Rush.
Meanwhile, Ben McCormack leaves his farm to retrieve his intended bride from a rowdy tent town on the Alaskan coastline. Ben’s path inadvertently entwines with Vivian’s and he finds his heart tugging him in a different direction.
Danger and disappointment plague all their journeys to the far North. Will Vivian find her sister in time to return home to see their father? Can Ginny forgive herself for the decisions she’s made? Will Ben find the lifelong love he searches for?

All That Glitters, by Lisa J. Flickinger, takes place during the Klondike Gold Rush period. When Mr. Connor becomes ill, he moves his family to their Aunt Margaret's home. Ginny Connor has met Logan Harris who leads her to believe they would get married and travel to Carson City, build a hotel and make it rich. Vivian Connor has gone to speak with the doctor to find out what her parents are not telling her. While walking there she gets hurt. Ben McCormack is in town, checking for a letter from his intended and sees her. He lends her a hand while going to the doctor. When Vivian gets home, she finds out Ginny is gone. Vivian lets her foot heal a few days and then takes the train to find Ginny. At the same time, Ben is taking the train to go to his intended. This is a good story. The author has written this in such detail that it is easy to envision Ginny spending her time in her room on the train and to feel the pain she suffers from Logan. And it is easy to imagine how Ben must have felt when he found out who is intended really is. This is a great story of love, forgiveness and redemption. I received a copy of this book from the BookCrash book review program. This is my honest review.
The story line of All That Glitters was captivating. As the I read the relationship between the two sisters, it was easy to see that small rivalry and and how the younger sister felt as though she could never live up to her "perfect sister".
The problem I had with this book wasn't the style of writing. Lisa J. Flickinger has a way with words and an easy flow.
What detracted from the book was how rushed the story seemed. I didn't allow for me to become immersed into the setting, to feel the emotional turmoil within both sisters, and the ending seemed to conclude too soon. I needed to read more on how the doctor, who seemed a little too perfect, reacted to Ginny's fate and choices. Even to be able to see more about the Klondike would have been nice.
But if a reader wants a simple story that tells of a beautiful redemption tale, then it would be a book for her. I would even recommend this story to teenagers. It was clean storytelling of a time that history seemed to have forgotten.

Author Lisa Flickinger writes a riveting historical fiction set in the time of the Klondike Gold Rush, a time when vast numbers of men—and women—are consumed with greed as they risk all to seek their fortunes. She has done her research well, making the situations and locations real and believable, from the busy and dangerous waterfront, to Dawson City and the desolate tent communities nearby. Lisa writes from a Christian worldview, offering hope in the face of extreme distress.
The main characters in this book are individual and distinct, but they also grow and change as they meet with obstacles in their paths. The wide variance in characters adds to the tension in the book, especially between Vivian and Ginny. How can you help someone who doesn’t wish to be helped?
I think the plot is the strongest element of this story. The reader truly cannot foresee what will happen next. The twists and turns defy imagination. This story kept me flipping quickly through screens as I read, wishing I could warn Ginny, encourage Vivian, applaud Alistair and ask Ben what he was thinking.
I’d recommend this book as a good read for anyone who appreciates historical fiction with a strong plot, a Christian message and a positive takeaway.
I found this book quite engaging. I was able to relate to the characters right from the beginning. At the beginning it seemed like everything was overly detailed but when your in a different time era, it's good to have lots of details so as a reader you can picture it as acurrately as possible. As a first time author this book was really well done. Looking forward to a possible sequel or a new series!
