Sophie Calle is a French writer, photographer, installation artist, and conceptual artist. Calle's work is distinguished by its use of arbitrary sets of constraints, and evokes the French literary movement of the 1960s known as Oulipo. Her work frequently depicts human vulnerability, and examines identity and intimacy. She is recognized for her detective-like ability to follow strangers and investigate their private lives. Her photographic work often includes panels of text of her own writing.
fantôme est ce qui reste, ce qui atteste de la disparition (éphémère ou définitive) d'un objet. ici, ce sont les espaces vides sur les cimaises des musées des œuvres parties en prêt ou en restauration qui deviennent fantôme(s). croisant souvenirs et avis de certains personnels des musées, Sophie Calle (re)créé les œuvres fantômes façon patchwork. récit court, amusant et agréable, j'ai beaucoup aimé voir les dessins faits à partir du souvenir des œuvres (j'aurai aimé que plus de reproductions soient intégrées !!)
I love the idea Calle created for ruminating on art works that are on loan, stolen, etc. I wish the recreations people drew from their memory were included on their own. Yes, they’re part of the resulting installation as a whole but the size of the book makes them too difficult to see. It may have been copyright or publisher’s choice, but it also would have been nice to have photos of the pieces being discussed.
