Getaway Mountain

Rate this book
Murder, money, and mayhem – just the formula for romance.

Her writing career was on the skids. His wasn't much better. Then they team up and the story begins.

Reclusive romance novelist Melody Harmon, her career on the skids, flees to her writing retreat in the Pennsylvania mountains rather than team up with Don Bridges, an ex-cop turned suspense writer. When she discovers caches of cash—to the tune of a million dollars—she assumes it’s her late husband’s gambling winnings. Then dead bodies start popping up. Don wants to help her solve the mystery, but she doesn’t know if she should trust him. Can Melody overcome the pain of betrayal and learn to trust before the killer strikes again?

REVIEWS:

“I was compelled to keep reading long past dinnertime and bedtime. Michele’s vivid descriptive details and fast-moving action scenes kept me in my seat from the first page to the last.” – Karen O’Connor, author and speaker

“In this novel, Michele Huey balances the backdrop of the beautiful western Pennsylvania mountains with mysterious circumstances to produce a Christian novel that will give the reader a cardiac workout. The writing stuns the reader with its poetic turn of phrase, skillful weaving of clues, and loveable characters. This book will keep you guessing.” – Cass Wessel

I enjoy this author's writing so I got this one as soon as it was released, and I was not disappointed. I was caught up in the lives of the characters and the story line from the first pages. The book is a wonderful combination of faith, mystery and romance, and there are twists and turns in the story that kept me reading to see what was going to happen next. I certainly would recommend this book to any reader who enjoys good Christian fiction. I definitely will be watching for the second book in the series.

Meeting with her literary agent, said it was a must to meet with her.
She is now saying to get rid of the black, the baggy pants, and join life again, she was only fifty one. Okay but she had a mountain of debts her husband left her. Now saying she wants me to met with Don Briggs and coauthor books with him adding some mystery to my romance books.
The mix up that’s going on in her life,it’s a wonder she trusts anyone, family , neighbor or friend. She could easily write books about it. Nice mystery with romance.

Read in 1 sitting

Loved the mystery twists and turns as well as relationship sub themes. Surprised to read about Greensburg, as that is where I live. It's a small world.

What I Liked:

This is a fun book about writers. I honestly wish that it would have focused more on that aspect of the story. As it could at times be funny.

I really liked Melody's son Garrett and Don's daughter Anne. I shipped them the moment they were together.

The mystery certainly had some good twists that were enjoyable.

And that scene with Melody's agent, Cassie! Brilliant, humorous, and annoying; why couldn't we have more scenes with her for?

What I Didn't Like:

For some reason I thought that this was a contemporary romance, so it kind of threw me off when the mystery stuff came in. It was okay, BUT, I don't know, it wasn't my favorite.

I really disliked Melody's lack of common sense. I get that the book needed to... well book. But they were so many times where she wouldn't/didn't call the police that really annoyed me. Like when she found that dead body she could have called the police the moment she had phone service, but no, she goes and calls the ex-cop boyfriend whom is unable to get to his phone when she called. Like really? It didn't occur to her to call the cops???

The romance is horrible. I didn't think that either one of them had the proper chemistry. Melody went from not liking Don to suddenly liking him. And I don't remember the transaction.

Content in Book:

1. Embezzling money.

2. Murder. (Someone falling out of a balcony. Someone getting hit with a hammer. A cop dying. A couple people getting killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. Etc.)

3. Divorce. An affair.

4. Someone dying in a car accident.

Who I Would Recommend This Book Too:

Those who like contemporary romance. Those like stories about writers. Those who like mysteries.

This book was intriguing to me on many levels. A former cop now writing mysteries who needs an injection of romance into his written works; a romance novelist whose plots have turned stale--they get paired up by their agent to coauthor a book and also end up eventually finding love. The title refers to the fact that the romance novelist has a mountain retreat that she uses for writing--a retreat that she is now moving into for financial reasons. The former cop buys a homestead in the same area on the advice of the agent. When the romance writer's supposedly deceased husband returns to collect money he embezzled, both find themselves in hot water--and out of it comes an idea for a new series.

This book is excellent! I'm only half done with this book and I love it! So much so that I'm reading this book out loud to my husband, who is enjoying it as much as I am. It's funny, intriguing, and very well written. The characters are realistic and believable. The writing style is fresh, descriptions very visual, moods palpable. Can't wait to see how this first book ends, and I'm glad this is just the first in a series. Kudos to the author on this one. You're new to me, but I'll definitely be following this series.
Followup: Finished book. Great read! Look forward to the next one in this series.

I loved, loved this book. The suspense had my heart in my throat, from first word until last..
I felt like shaking Melody at times because she was so naive.
The characters were well developed and they flowed through the scene with ease.
We see The Lord prominent in the book guiding each word
Romantic suspense is my favorite so I read the book in one setting.
This my first book by this author but won't be the last.
