A Forest of Darkness #1
Mastering Darkness
Anthony is hanging on to his humanity by his fingertips. A slip in his usual control during a gruesome task uncomfortably reminds him that the feel of his unbridled Master Vampire power is exhilarating… and freeing. But letting the cool creep of that wild, powerful energy overtake everything human about him would destroy any semblance of the life he’d built for himself, not to mention the lives of all those he protects.
A flirtatious chance meeting with a beautiful human shocks his heart into remembering sensations he thought he’d long lost the ability to experience. Oblivious to the supernatural world existing in the shadows all around her, Kaia has secrets of her own, though, like why she’s the only human living at Wild Woods, home to Anthony’s bitter foe.
As responsibilities keep Anthony tied to a life of duty and violence, time spent with Kaia gives him hope that he hasn’t yet become the monster he sees in the mirror. But is her love for real, or just a ploy to push him all the way into darkness?

Mastering Darkness is the first book in the Forest of Darkness series, and it sets us off with a huge bang.
When I entered the series, I wanted nothing more than a way to pass the time. I’m awaiting so many books, there are so many addictions that need feeding, that I saw this series as a way to pass the time. It wasn’t that I was expecting a bad book; however, the synopsis had me expecting something I’ve read before. After all, the synopsis makes it sound like any other vampire loves human romance story. I never say no to such stories, yet I’ve stopped expecting any real wow factors.
It turns out I was wrong in so many ways. This series is not a mere way to pass the time – this series is another heavy addiction. Within chapters, I knew I was a goner. Mastering Darkness pulled me in and refused to let up. As soon as I was finished with the story, I was jumping into the next one, and then the next, and then the next. It went from being a way to pass the time to a series quite high on my ‘give me the next book in the series now’ list. So yeah, I guess you could say I’m somewhat addicted to this one. Obsessed would be a better word, if I were to be truthful.
Honestly, words cannot do this series justice.
As soon as I was a few pages into Mastering Darkness, I was hit quite hard with a very simple fact: Kate Wendley really knows how to pull you into the world she has created. I went in expecting the usual clichés, but within moments these thoughts were pushed aside. The trepidation I felt vanished almost instantly. This wasn’t what I had been anticipating, and Kate Wendley’s way of telling the story was the reason for that. Some authors take very simple concepts and turn them into something more – such is the case here. Some authors have a way of pulling you deep into the world, so deep that you cannot escape – such is the case here. Some authors have a special touch, something that cannot be identified with ease, something that makes them stand out when comparing them to other authors in the genre – such is the case here. The entire feel of the story was so different to what I’m accustomed to, it really did stand out against other books in the genre.
If you’re a fan of paranormal romance, you really do need to jump on this series. You’re missing out if you’ve yet to start the Forest of Darkness series – I can assure you, it’s a must read series.
There really are so many things that made this book great, but to list them all would be to write a very lengthy review. A review lengthier than what this is already becoming. As you can see, this is very much a book – a series – that has hit me hard. It’s pulled all kinds of emotions from me, making coherence extremely difficult. I will try to hit upon all the main points, though.
First off, we have the characters. I fell in love with the characters instantly. Both our leading characters and the side characters were wonderful. There was a realness to them that had me connecting in next to no time at all. They’re far from perfect, they have their issues, and yet they’re perfect because of their flaws. Mistakes are made, emotions run high, and you’re not always happy with them – however, you love them throughout because they’re such real characters. It was so fun to watch as they slowly developed throughout the story, as changes occurred in line with interactions. The entire cast was amazing in so many ways. I can assure you, even if you’re not obsessing over the two leading characters, you will find at least one character you truly adore.
Next up, we have the paranormal world building. This aspect is surprisingly simple. I do not mean this in a bad way, far from it. What I mean is that you can easily understand the world. Sometimes paranormal world building can seem a bit convoluted – such is not the case here. It is a very rich world, there are many elements, yet you understand it with ease. Don’t worry, though, there is plenty thrown in to mix things up. Although everything seems straightforward at first, as the story progresses elements are thrown in that leave you with promises of what will come in the future books. You’re left with many questions relating to the paranormal world, things that will leave you curious about where the series will head in the future.
The next big point is the romance. Throughout I knew the romance in this story felt a bit different. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it at first, but as I read more books in the series I had an epiphany. Despite being a paranormal romance, the issues the couple faced throughout the book felt more like contemporary romance issues. The paranormal element is always there in the background – it is pivotal to the story and cannot be ignored – yet the characters deal with the kind of issues you would deal with in contemporary romance stories. There is insecurity, there is fear of rejection, and there are issues from the past, to name a few. Although these elements are mixed wonderfully with the paranormal, I couldn’t help but feel as though they were addressed in an almost contemporary romance way. It sounds odd, it sounds as though it shouldn’t work, and yet I adored this. It was refreshing in so many ways.
What hit me the hardest, though, is the ending. Hot damn! If I not had already been excited to jump into book two, that ending would have done it for me without a doubt. You knew something was coming, you knew there would be something to throw us into the future of the series, but what we were given was not at all what I had expected. I genuinely let out some very happy noises as I read the end of the book – answers were needed, and they were needed straight away.
Without a doubt, this was a wonderful first book in the series. A solid four star rating, with so much promise of where we will go in the future.
Paranormal romance fans, you really need to jump on this one.

A different paranormal story!

4**** stars from me
What a lovely and unique story! Mastering darkness is the first book of the series and in this part we have the story of a vampire and a human, when you read the theme you could think " Mm another romantic paranormal story like the others" but it's not, it is very different and Anthony's personality isn't flawless like other vampire heroes, he has his insecurities and a caring/gentle soul. You can see that his actions are always for the better good, that's not something you see all the time in the vampires and you can easily fall in love with his character. Kaia is a lovely character who besides her painful past, never stopped seeing the good in people neither judging by the external appearance. That is why Anthony is so impressed with her personality, you he has a scar and that where his insecurities come from.

Their conversations were very enjoyable, really i loved the phrases..."Baby?" ..."Yes my sweet.".... Simply Adorable!!!!

The pace was steady and the rest characters made the book even more interesting, besides that the story has twists, secrets and many emotions. Well i certainly will read the second book of the series in order to learn Sebastian's story, as for this one i definitely recommend it i believe is really worth reading story and won't disappoint you.

Darkness Mastered
This is a love story at its core, it just happens to involve vampires. Anthony the Master Vampire of Atlanta has grown lonely and cold. Kaia a human with secrets of her own, lives smack in the middle of the supernatural community with no knowledge that it's even there. While you get all the bells and whistles of a hot, sexy vampire book, you also get the sweet heat of their love story. Author Kate Wendley gives you the best of both.4☆read, great characters, good storyline that could use a little extra fleshing out, can't wait to see what the author does with book two. I recieved a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review from Reading Alley.

This was just ok for me. It wasn't overly exciting and the the emotional angst that i really love in my prns didn't show up until the very end of the book. I also didn't love how the female lead referred to the "H" as 'baby'. I don't necessarily have an issue with that term of endearment but she started using it only a week into knowing each other...it was just weird and it annoyed me every time she used it. The dialogue/interactions between the two of them just didn't flow well..it was awkward. Sadly, this one was a bit of a let down....and it took me almost an entire month to read!! :/

Wow just wow. What a phenomenal book.(hehe no pun
intended) this book was an amazing. so artfully written and
so thoroughly thought out. This whole series set was.
Mastering Darkness, Book 1
The first book is Anthony and Kaia. Kaia is human and is
living in the midst of a whole community of supernaturals.
And has no clue. When one night she bumps into Anthony
she has no clue just who or what she has bumped into. Or
that he arranged for the bump as there is just something
about her he finds so sweet. Till he learns his worst fear she
lives near a person he despises and doubt makes him as
they date they grow closer, but he is scared and because
she lives in his nemeses community. He does not know if
she is playing a game or not. let’s hope he wises up soon.
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too.

A New World of Shifters/Vampires
How Do You Like Your Vampire?
A Master Vampire Of The Atlanta Territory
A Beautiful Human Woman
Shifters And Vampires As You Have Never Seen Them
Filled With Emotions And Desire To Belong
STORY LINE:
Author Kate Wendley has created a world of shifters and vampires that is very different. We see them with emotions, insecurities, jealousy, envy, in other words, we see human emotions in her characters.
Anthony is the Master Vampire of the Atlanta Territories; he is a good Master who punishes when he must and has been emotionally alone for almost 300 years. Romantic relationships never work for him especially with humans. He has emotional baggage and insecurities when it comes to relationships.
Human Kate had an abusive childhood emotionally and physically as well as emotional insecurities. These two meet by chance and what follows is a roller coaster of a story filled with action, drama, and emotion. Kate and Anthony begin a relationship in the human and shifter/vampire world.
CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, AND DEVELOPMENT:
Jonathan's character development was progressive throughout the book. He is an emotionally insecure in the romance department; he longs for someone to share his life, but someone who wants him for himself not power or position. Kate has her own emotional scars from years abuse. Both must come to terms with their past to begin a future.
Ms. Wendley wove the threads of this story together to produce a very good book showing the emotional side of the shifter/vampire as well as their need for family and friends. The plotting of the story and the pacing was well done as we travel through Ms. Wendley's world of shifter and vampire.
The story has twists and turns that will keep you reading through the night to finish the story. This book has drama, action, and at times cruelty. I became enmeshed in the story. Ms. Wendley has the ability to transport you into the story line.
Of course every good paranormal novel must have a villain or two. We find our main adversary is basically a good man scarred from his past and on a quest for vengeance. I loved Ms. Wendley's creation of shifters and vampires as a different species which had all the insecurities and needs we as humans possess.
I found myself cheering for Anthony and Kate to find the right combination to forge a life together and the villain, Ethan, to find peace. Did this happen? You will have to read the book to find out. No spoilers here!
RECOMMENDATION:
I enjoyed this book very much; staying up very late to reach the end. This was a great start to a good series, which I plan to follow. My next review will be book 2 in this series. This book has sex and violence; I would recommend this book for young adult and adult audiences.

This was a new author for me. Her stories are decently paced. You don't get whiplash, but you don't feel like you are missing important pieces. This first book in this series, is about the story of Anthony, the Master Vampire in the Atlanta territory, and the human girl, Kaia. Both of them come into this with secrets, but neither realize the stakes are their hearts. Come to find out, Kaia is also friends with some people intimately in Anthony's circle, but she doesn't know their secret, either. This girl has no clue she is about to enter a world unknown to most. Her friend Ethan is playing a dangerous game, but no one knows the rules but Ethan. You will be introduced to vampires and shifters of all kind in this delightful read. You will see Anthony fighting with himself about how much to tell her, how to tell her, as well as the demons in his past from taking care of his responsibilities as the Master of all the supernaturals in his area. It is a hard burden to bear, but someone has to do it. Anthony does it well, but will Kaia be able to accept ALL that he is, or only the parts he shows her. I can't wait to read the next one and find out more about Anthony and Kaia, as well as figuring out how Ethan will continue to play a part in it.

he is a a very bad guy who will seduce you
Anthony is the bad guy. He is strong, powerful beyond imagination. He is the master vampire of the region with absolute power on everyone. He is dark, fearsome and has killed many. And he has a huge scar on his face. Sort of forestall any good intentions toward him. therefore people keeps away from him and justly so. He is on the verge to surrender to his dark side and become the monster everyone sees. But he meets someone who does not see the monster everyone does. She does not even see his scar. And the story is about this discovery of his inner self that -by the way- has good points. Obviously there is also a she in the story who is essential in the plot development. But I was so enruptured with Anthony... Nice the spider story: they are present since the very beginning and stay with you until the very end...I don't want to tell you more... I will for sure read the next in the serie and I definetely recommend it.

Fell in love with Mastering Darkness
If you love paranormal, mystery, and romance this book has it all. The turns and twist and secrets that both Anthony and Kaia have from the past and present could possibly be the undoing of the relationship before it even starts. They both rely on past relationships and assume the same outcome but hope that is not the case. Anthony must deal with his responsibility of being Master of the city and caring for his family. A family of vampires and shifters under his protection. If Ethan has his way, Anthony will pay for his father's actions. The Author brings closure to some issues but leaves enough questions unanswered that I am ready to pick up book two and see what will happen next. Her secondary characters are just as wonderful as her main characters. I have found my new favorite series.

Wow!! This story is outstanding!!! Anthony, the Master Vampire has his insecurities and although he made me want to slap him upside the head a few times, he was a great leader for the family because he's totally committed, the most powerful in his territory and willing to take one for the team. No one's perfect though and relationships...nope he just doesn't get it!! Kaia is so easy going and very open-minded but she's not a push-over. She accepts Anthony as is because she has scars too hers just can't be seen.
Now Ethan is crazy, I hope the rest of his story is told/resolved before he causes a territory war with Anthony. I also wonder how Anthony got scarred?? This community of shifters & vampires is fascinating, reading how they manage their differences in spite of supremacy issues kept me glued to the pages. Wonder where Mother Vampire lives??? I knew something was up with those spiders, lol.

A very convincing take on vampire romance...........
A nice and believable book which showcases the gradual building of feeling between a human -Kaia and the vampire leader Anthony. There was no insta-love which is much appreciated, but a measured and steady build up of emotions within the characters. The plot with it's multiple character narrative helps to keep the story from growing monotonous and the lovemaking is both seductive and tender where two lone souls comes together to join in one. On personal perspective, the misunderstanding seemed a little forced as it could have been solved easily, instead of so much depression. And lastly, the ending piques our interest for the coming events in the next book of the series.

This is definitely one of the most amazing love stories of all time. Anthony and Kaia both make my heart swell with hopefulness and then turn around break it with their individual sadness'
The feelings they share roll through you like a tidal wave, I laughed and I cried and I got mad at both of them for being stupid and not just telling each other everything. And Ethan's sick amusement of it all irked me SO bad!! I'm sorry but if he cared for Kaia as he claims he would want her to be happy and stop interfering.
Seriously though, about Ethan, he is a total douche!! I get that he holds a grudge and all but this is ridiculous and his obsession about his dead wife...really?? Get over it dude seriously...you have created such a freakish fantasy involving Kaia is disturbing!!
Totally amazing book, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next 2 books!!

I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a refreshing change from the usual vampire books I've read so far, where the protagonist Master vampire is always as super hot as the level of his power and just as arrogant. while the is nothing wrong with that, i feel that its been overdone too much. I loved that while Anthony is incredibly powerful, he can be still humble and vulnerable at the same time be respected and feared in his territory. But my one problem with the plot is that there is a lack of action or proper antagonist, so to me it read live a romance book which just happened to include vampires and shifters in that world. Anyway, still looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I loved it and couldn't put it down once I started reading it. I love paranormal books especially vampire books. You will love reading about Anthony and Kaia. Kate using strong characters and a very good story line too. Anthony is the Master Vampire whose duty is to protect humanity from knowing about them and other super natural. He has grown bored and has decided to give in to his basic nature. Kaia is a human who has captured his attention and heart but also lives in the home of his enemy. Will all the lies keep them apart? Wonder why she is the only human there? I can't wait to read more of this series.

What a wonderful book. Very different from other "vampire series". Anthony is a Master Vampire who takes care and is head of his "family" - other supernaturally who live in Atlanta. Kaia is human without a "family". This story is about what makes a family, a family. It's gritty, and raw and that's what makes it different. This is the first book in the series, the others are must read too! For something out of the ordinary, I recommend reading not just this book, but the others in the series too.

I really liked this book. Aside from a few errors in word usage, etc., it’s a very good read overall and I’m looking forward to book 2. Anthony has self-esteem issues with women because of how they’ve reacted to the scar on his face and he believes he’s ugly and no woman would see past it to him. Kaia sees him and the scar isn’t ugly to her, it’s simply part of him. With dashes of sweetness, passion, and more, I definitely recommend this and have found another new to me, author to continue reading.

Interesting
I found Anthony to be very interesting. Kaia was just beautiful inside and out. They had an instant connection. I enjoyed reading the story and their struggles. It was very well written. There were a few twists to the normal paranormal books that I found very interesting. I am eager to read more of this series. I received this book from Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review.

This was an enjoyable paranormal romance. It was interesting to have the male protagonist be such a powerful vampire, but yet so insecure when it came to relationships. The female protagonist, Kaia, was complex and surprising. The author has created an interesting hidden paranormal world in Atlanta and has injected some backstories and controversies that set up the possibility of future books.

This is the first book of “A Forest of Darkness” series. It is a book very interesting what it will entertaining you until the last pages.
The characters are well described and very complex. It seems to know you and to be part of their family.
A book for all those who love the paranormal and a new series about vampires different from usual but very intense.

My heart ached for Anthony as he struggled to remain balanced between his responsibilities overseeing his community of shifters and vampires, and his desire to find someone to love, who would love him even though he was physically scarred and a vampire himself. He finds his love in Kaia, who accepts him for who he is, scars and all. A really good read. (This ebook was given to me by eBook discovery in return for an honest review.)

What everyone looks for...
I really enjoyed this book! The ebb and flow of the story kept me interested and it was nice to see from a male's point-of-view that there is an inherent need for men to have what all of us women want also! Well done! It is truly a good read and can't wait to read he others!

The book was a charmer. It was an interesting blend of the accepted in this genre with subtle changes to suit the plot. Characters were well developed, up to a point. I enjoyed reading it, and am looking forward to more work by this author.

The story was not clear and flowing. If I had the see just get to know you one more time at 35% I was gonna dnf. Thankfully it ended for the most part and I continued. The character building was lacking for everyone, and the wrap up went from 60-0 in seconds.

I'm having a hard time deciding how I feel about Mastering Darkness by Kate Wendley It's not that I disliked the book, but I found myself wanting to quit reading at times. I love to read and have a very bad habit of staying up way past my bedtime so I can read. I wanted to like the story, but I felt like I was forcing myself to stay with it.
I can't specifically say there is anything wrong with Kate's writing: I was pretty impressed with her style. I felt like the book dragged on, almost as if you could take scenes out and still have a good story. She wanted to keep the intrigue alive and give us hints every once in awhile, but I wanted to tell her to just give it up already! I also didn't care for the new plots or characters that would suddenly be put into the story; ie: the Vampire Mother. Really??
I wouldn't mind finding out how the characters are and what they are up to, but I don't feel this is the series for me.

Kate Wendley's Mastering Darkness is about a Vampire who falls for a human woman. Anthony struggles with his self esteem because of his disfiguring scars. He always feels that he is not good enough. Kaia struggles to be accepted, feeling that no one could because of her childhood. When they meet they are instantly attracted to one another. There is enough drama to keep you turning the pages and to keep you rooting for these two characters to work through their problems and finally be together. It is obvious that the author spent some time is building this solid world and fleshing out some wonderful characters. If you like stories of the supernatural and a really great romance, you will love Mastering Darkness
