4.5 stars. Absolutely amazing and thrilling graphic-novel. I want more of that crazy darkness (please).

TRIGGER WARNING : Loads of violence.

The same organization is used in this second Volume, which alternates chapters in Fillmore post-crazy-doctor-operation present life,

(where he tries to help the police officers arresting the bad guys)

and flashbacks chapters during which he was still Madder Red,

(the crazy sociopath who passes the Joker off as a freaking joke)

The story is full of twists and turns and managed to surprise me several times, leaving me eager for more. (this is why I'm angry) (just read below now will you)

Now, WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE'S NO VOLUME 3 PLANNED?

(are you freaking kidding me?)

You better be.

Or else. (now you make what you want of that) (kidding, kidding)

I love this fucking series but there's two questions burning a hole in my tiny little mind, first off they did the old change the artist trick for the second volume. Nick Spencer does the story and Riley Rossmo who did the art for volume 1 has been replaced with Ryan Browne. Normally this infuriates me, they have an absolutely top notch winning formula and they bloody change it, how many times does this happen, fuck fuck fuckity fuck fuck.

I'd ban that shit, have a bit more thought for us muppets who turn into fans and keep these franchises going. Maybe I'm being unreasonable, it does annoy me just a little as you can probably tell. Thankfully the story continues in the violently imaginative vein of the first volume, in fact the stories better, the artworks slightly different and thankfully they manage to get the flashbacks of Madder Red (once chief homicidal maniac and former criminal overlord of the city of Bedlam and now helping the law catch serial killers) absolutely spot on.

Fillmore Press was once Madder Red, now he's cured of his maniacness and psychotic tendencies. Now he wants to help catch killers with his unique abilities and there's a new one just opened up for business, perfect. Bedlam is a desperately scary and brutal world that you just wanna explore.

And finally to my second question, what the fuck happened? Where's the continuation of the story? can't find any info in the geekaverse. It's just ended part way through a story it seems, Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh I wanna fucking scream. One of the best series going and its ..... nobloodymore.

Complete Travesty. I’m pretty sure you’re getting my drift by now.

Rumour has it Bedlam will resume in 2016, after stalking Nick Spencer on twitter, we can hope.

I did not like this at all! A dark, graphically violent, non-sensical story. Awful scratchy artwork. I'm glad this wasn't the first Nick Spencer book I've read or I may never have read Morning Glories.

Damn, I didn't like this one at all.
Listen, if I had done a top reads from last year (which I didn't cause I pretty much didn't read shit) Bedlam Vol. 1 would have been there. It was amazingly dark, twisted, violent... everything I wanted from a horror/thriller graphic novel. Was it a bit too much? Sure, it was quite sick, soooo I pretty much loved it.

But this one? This one was just messy. It didn't follow the story that was set up in volume one and sadly didn't live up to the expectations. It was anticlimactic with a villain that lacked originality. And mass hypnosis? Reeeeeally? It was just... so boring at times and what is worst it felt rushed.
The one thing I loved the most in volume one were the flashbacks, they were such an important part of the whole arc and a great way to introduce the main character, this ''rehabilitated'' sick, twisted individual, so I was expecting more of the Madder Red backstory, after all they were the most shocking and visually stunning pages. But, to my disappointment, there were barely a few of them here. It felt like a wasted opportunity to keep developing this character, especially because Fillmore didn't even feel like the main character in this volume, it rather felt like there were 3 main characters and neither of them was especially interesting.

The sketchy artwork that I loved so much before, because I felt like it represented the distorted, messy mind set of Fillmore and the Madder Red, was a bit of an annoyance now that the mood of the story didn't resemblance the fantastic ambiance the first volume constructed so well.

Also, is this trade the end of the series? Why end it with an underwhelming cliffhanger? I didn't care at all about the twist/surprise.
Honestly, I'd go and read the first volume as an stand-alone. It was a brilliant horror/thriller and you won't regret it.

5 issues??? just 5 issues? C'mon! you're killing me here! I know, I'm ranting because Vol. 1 had 6. But seriously the story goes pretty fast.

So, it seems that just like Gotham, Bedlam isn't a place you should chose for holidays. From one moment to another everyone decided to kill their fellow citizens. Mass murder-suicide all around you. Yes, Bedlamites (?) are cray-cray and we don't know why. That's why now we need our favourite crime-solver Fillmore Press! Good, now the Bedlam policy realised that they suck at investigating weird kinds of murders and decided to hire this even awkward-ish version of Will Graham (Hannibal fans in da house?) to do the job.

Madder Red is always lurking in Fillmore's head and we had a lot of flashbacks depicting a very bloody episode in which we learned more about his relationship with Bedlam's hero The First.

Oh! one more thing to say: Who likes cliffhangers?

We're thrown right into it.

Three strands, all at once, no obvious connection.

12 Years ago, Madder Red dominates the City, and it's physical representation, The First.

Now, Councilman Severin, secretly The First, fights for funding to the special crimes unit, while still physically fighting crime in the off hours.

Now, Fillmore Press, increasingly tortured by flashbacks to when he used to be Madder Red, is still consulting with the police to solve crimes.

12 years ago, Madder Red has the First completely at his mercy, beats him half to death and lets him go.

Now, Severin is completely at the mercy of the antagonist, who has already made people commit suicide bombings or throw themselves off of buildings.

Now, the nameless, faceless antagonist is trying to coax Madder Red out of Fillmore's mind.

Everything reflects everything in this horrifying funhouse mirror, and nothing ever sits on solid ground. All is unsettled. And it stays that way until the end, where nothing is truly resolved.

The art really plays up to the story- Just as in part 1 is primal, visceral. Here, the sketchy lines, reflect the sketchy story and the sketchy antagonist. The only straight, solid lines in the entire book belong to the edges of the panels. It's disturbing. No place of rest.

At the end we are left with broken, damaged characters, in a broken damaged city, facing a broken antagonist who has broken their greatest strengths. The whole damn thing is broken. It's a prefect part two.

Volume 1 was such a strong start but this just didn't feel the same. May read next volume if there is another.

I didn’t like this as much as the first volume. Not a big fan of the direction this volume took. It wasn’t as interesting and as original as the first volume in my opinion. Also, volume one ended with a set up that I assumed they were going to explore in this volume, but then this went on a totally different route. It’s like the author had a plan on his mind, but had to rush and ended up coming up with this. I mean, to be honest I wasn’t a big fan of the ending in volume one, but since it ended in a cliffhanger I would like to see where it would lead to.

My favourite thing about volume one were the flashbacks. They were dark and twisted and it made me want to see more of Madder Red. But this volume only had a few of them.
They also changed the artist which will never stop to bother me. They still kept a similar style, but I loved the artwork in the first volume because it fit the story and the tone perfectly, but it felt weird in this one. Maybe because the story in here didn’t grab as much? I don’t know.

Even though this didn’t grab me as much as volume one did, I still thought this was a good read. I would still be interested in reading a follow up if it were ever to happen.

i haven't really liked it. the story turns somewhat in a political drama and therefore does not connect to the first volume. the arts are much more choppy and harsh, so the storyline is now almost incomplete. it goes from fillmore's fights against his redemption and the first volume's encourage for dexter/blacklist cops to a bizarre story about the mayor's battle for second term and the ways murder is occurring in his campaign...

not happy at all.

This wasn't as strong as the first volume, and ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger that I assume at this point will never be resolved. The art was a bit different as well, not as much exciting use of textured, but still one of the highlights of the volume.

Chapter 7: "OUR LITTLE CONFERENCES"

Ramira Acevedo and her Extraordinary Crimes Task Force are on the way to getting their budget made permanent. She offers Fillmore a job as consultant.
On the flipside there's a new killer and he's killing people with, not suicide bombers, but suicide selfies.

Chapter 8: "I'M A VICTIM HERE"

A couple of people survive the blast, mostly the people at the library. One of them, the most coherent, spins Ramira and Fillmore a love story type situation, and they help locate the girl he was trying to chat up. When they bring him in to speak to her, she says he's the one who pulled out the selfies bomb. Ramira books him, Fillmore isn't convinced and in the midst of that the suspect's eyes roll back as though possessed and he starts to channel some guy with an Icelandic accent. Then a bunch of possessed people start jumping off buildings like in that Night M. Shyamalan movie with, was it Mark Wahlberg?
Impressive issue though.

Chapter 9: "STICKY TRICKY"

Oh, Oh.

If you're one of those people who thought the TV show THE FOLLOWING was shit, and improbable that a literature professor could wield so much power without explaining any of it... this issue is going to make the Following look worse than it already does in your eyes. At least it did in mine. Unlike the Following, in this issue, this volume, we're confronted with the rare mind of a criminal hypnotist or cultist or something of that persuasive nature. His influence over his subjects isn't just lorded over us the readers, but Fillmore breaks it down, how meticulous the perp is, smart too, methodical, etc. You end up admiring the guy. Well, I better stop there before I start sounding Whipped.
The story? Yeah, so you probably know how I think The First is the only flaw in this comic book series, further validation, he's a puny city Council man, Matt Severin. The kicker in this issue is Mr. Pixels has him cornered and is about to brainwash him. Yay!

Chapter 10: "I CAN FIX THIS"

The Extraordinary Crimes Task Force manages to locate Mr. Pixels` lair and together with SWAT they storm the compound, but are in for a rude awakening.
The SWAT wind up shooting at each other. Ramira gets shot and Fillmore meets Mr. Pixels, who assures him he's not yet ready, but will be when he does as all the others have, when he purges himself of weakness. The most vicious example of this purging is The First beating to a pulp his mother, whom he's been living in her shadow. Whoa!

Chapter 11: "OUR FIRE BURNS BRIGHT"

Fillmore confronts Mr. Pixel, who offers him a gun and tries to release the buried Madder Red by goading Fillmore into killing him. Fillmore can't, and just when he's on the verge of breaking down, Ramira shoots Mr. Pixels. The only question on Fillmore's mind is how much of his conversation with Mr. Pixels did she hear.
Oh, and here's the kicker, there's another Mr. Pixels. Another one.

Although this series was written and published in 2013, Bedlam is the greatest series I've read this year. Period.

Bedlam continues to impress! A tight, savage mind game is in full effect with this volume. We learn more about Madder Red's former reign with the city interspersed with the current serial killer mastermind. Fillmore Press continues to work with the police department, now as a consultant tasked with catching the man behind a gruesome set of bombings and suicides. A brutal mix of mind control, terror, and politics fill out this volume of Bedlam. Horror/thriller fans won't be disappointed!

I'm going to quietly live in the hope that this series will come back, recommend it to all and sundry who are comfortable with a distinctly gruesome (and if slightly implausible, well, no more so than any other superhero-comic) crime story, and read my copies to tatters.

That is all.

Can the criminal mind every truly be rehabilitated? Can the damned ever be really be saved, even if they do much good later on? Fillmore Press, the mass murderer formerly known as Madder Red, is helping police Detective Ramira Acevedo unravel the mystery of a new serial killer in town. This one is using electronic devices to brainwash people. Everyone. He can strike at anyone and everyone at any time, and he does.

The First, the armored superhero in the city of Bedlam, is featured more prominently in this volume. I am glad that they went deeper into what he is about, and who he is (although I won't tell you that; it would be a dick move to spoil it for you). I suspect that he will factor very heavily into the next arc, if and whenever it happens. I sure hope that it does. Issue 12 hasn't even been solicited as of this writing.

This is really compelling, disturbing stuff. Browne's artwork has a scratchiness to it that lends an air of uneasiness to the already tense atmosphere. There is so much stuff being released each and every week that it is nearly impossible to keep up with everything going on. Like you, I can't keep up with everything no matter how hard I try. You might have missed Bedlam. If you like serial killer style Horror then you should give this a whirl.

Madder returns! Just kidding (no spoilers).
The second volume of Bedlam is just as good, if not better, than the first. The plot progresses to where you root (if you weren't already) for the male lead and his partnership with one stubborn detective (see if you don't agree.).
The illustrations are beautiful and bloody--if you're not a gore person, I'd look elsewhere. If so, this is a GN you won't want to pass up.
My favorite about this is that it plays with the concept of superhero villains and turns it on its head in a way that works. I've lost count of stories, GNs especially, that try to do the same thing and fail miserably.
Recommended for those who love a dark antihero (but trying to be an actual hero) who are delightfully tongue-in-cheek.
Happy reading!

This collects issues #7-11 of the series. Writer Nick Spencer and artist Ryan Browne continue to tell the story of Fillmore Press who was once the mass killer known as Madder Red.

Someone else is causing the cities citizens to commit suicide or murder. Fillmore attempts to help the police but his past can’t be escaped as the new threat knows what Fillmore once was. We also learn a secret or two about The First

I loved the first volume so much that I borrowed the electronic copy my library had of the second volume immediately. I found this one interesting too, but I don’t think I liked it as much as the first one. We didn’t get as much insight into Press’ past as I wish we did. But I still enjoyed it! This volumes villain was interesting and I need to know more. This volume came out a couple of years ago so I am worried the series will not continue. I hope it does!

An excellent follow up to bedlam vol 1.

The art and story telling still hitting the same heights.

The central mystery less compelling however clearly the building blocks to more.

And the deepening of the world building, the tantalising plot threads set up.

Just a shame it hasn't thus far gone anywhere.

Near 10 years since this was released and no more has been completed

Doubt it will but I hope it does

I enjoyed the artwork and continued story of the ex-master villain Madder Red and his work with the police. This time around, numerous citizens are killing themselves and Filmore Press is trying to help the police solve the case. I didn't enjoy some aspects of the plot as much as the first volume, but I did appreciate the ending.

Nick Spencer and Ryan Browne tell another really good tale of the insane city of Bedlam. Fillmore is trying his best to atone but there is a huge threat on the horizon that makes it difficult. Spencer has created a weird, terrifying world and its a shame there hasn't been another volume. I'd love to read more.

Why must I keep loving canceled series!? This was a great follow up to the previous graphic novel, I really liked where the story was going. I'm incredibly frustrated I won't be able to figure out what happens next. If you don't mind not knowing things then I would throw this "duology" at any horror fan!
