I read book one in this series in 2016. I enjoyed it. Finally, I am getting back to the series with book two. Crash Dive, book one, was my first experience with the author and I was impressed. This book only enhances my respect for the author’s storytelling skills.

The book is well written and researched. The story is action packed. The characters are interesting and believable. The suspense builds as the submarine proceeds on its mission. If you enjoy a World War II submarine story, this book is for you.

I read this book as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is five hours. R. C. Bray does an excellent job narrating the book. Bray is a stage actor and voice actor. He was won many Earphone Awards and has been nominated for the Audie Award.

2025 Review 002. Crash Dive #2 Silent Running by Craig DiLouie, narrated by R.C. Bray

Audio duration : 5 hours 1 minute

This is another amazing story in this series.

I have never listened to a series of books this quickly.

This series is made up of 6 books each around roughly 5 hours long.

The narrator, R.C. Bray, does a fantastic job of narrating these books. Prior to these books, I had only ever listened to one book narrated by him, The Martian by Andy Weir.

I have to say that he is now one of my favourite narrators.

Craig DiLouie has done a fantastic job with these books. The characters are believable and likable. The amount of research the author has done to write these books is absolutely fantastic.

I will definitely listen to these books again in the future.

“Silent Running” by Craig DiLouie is a riveting story depicting the adventures of the USS Sabretooth, an US Navy submarine. It is the second in the series, but can be read and enjoyed even if you have not read book #1 . I did.
Charlie “ Hara-Kari” Harrison newly assigned to “Sabrefish” brings with him a record of heroism on his previous sub when it was caught in a surface attack by an IJN destroyer. But his new shipmates , including the Captain, tend to be wary of what they see asHarrison’s daredevil aggressiveness. The novel is about whether he can win them over and prove his leadership qualities.
The sub’s mission is to carry a load of military pay and medical supplies and rendezvous with Guerrillas in the Philippines, and also sink Japanese shipping along the way.
The cruise is eventful. Mr. DiLouie does a very good job of depicting the daily routine and many dangers submariners faced. I am hardly expert, but his facts ring true especially in the context of writing a novel that grabs and holds the reader’ s attentions. The character of Harrison is one of a man flawed, but willing to learn and grow in stressful, dangerous situations. Other characters are sketched in, although the captain is more filled in as , as he should be.
Recommended as a very good novel. Recommended especially to those who enjoy reading novels of WW2 and / or who have seen such Hollywood war dramas as “ Run Silent, Run Deep, and others. As for me, I have put Craig DiLouie on my to read list.
( Nothing objectionable in the novel)

Charlie does it again!

I went straight from book one into this sequel and am about to proceed into book three. This series really makes me wish I had pushed my Navy recruiter harder so I could have joined into the submarine corps as a nuclear plant operator.

This is another action-packed entry in the series that kept me clamoring for more time in my car so I could listen. Craig really hits home at some of the same points I have heard from sailors that I've worked with who served on subs. The grime, the smell, the close quarters and frequent battle station alerts. As an Army soldier, I can only imagine what life is like aboard one of these machines.

Another fantastic job by Craig and my personal favorite narrator R.C. Bray. 5/5 and now on to book three!

I didn’t finish. Maybe a good YA book but not for serious readers of war fiction. Peyton Place too. I spent three years on a destroyer and every time we moored pier side or deployed my division had to stow/ deploy the mooring lines. Physical Work for sure. Here’s a hint- subs don’t have mooring lines- no reels to store them. And since when do subs allow seaman on deck during a rain shower to take shower? On the surface, in a war zone? Poor writing poor execution.

A Great Book, a classic WWII sub story

This was a great book in my estimation, good characters development, great detail in boat handling, operation and of course a good plot. I loved it. This reminded me of the classic WWII books I read when I was young. Now I am moving on to the next book in this series.

Great plot and action

I enjoyed most of the book. Being a former sub sailor I grit my teeth at small errors like saying "fire" instead of "shoot". It was something drilled into us at sub school and all during the qualifying process. Everything else concerning the fleet boat was pretty much accurate. Good character development and good story.

Charlie sinking Japs

Picking up from where he left off in Crash Dive Charlie Harrison continues his naval career in a new boat with a new crew and he has to prove himself all over again, and he does it with style, looking forward to Battle Stations.

Reasonable book. I've read a lot of non fiction about the reality of the submarine service in both the Atlantic and Pacific in WW2. This is an ok storytelling, but each book seems to try and jam way more than real into each story.

Craig masterfully describes submarine combat getting through some of the technical aspects with ease. More admirably is his capacity to get inside the mind of the main character and the many decisions that go into commanding... Page turner.

I was unsure of what this series would be like after looking at most of Craig DiLouie’s other works. Great historical setting, far fetched stories, and top notch character development.

Second in the series just as good. Again you have to suspend belief on a few things and forgive historical liberties (very few and small) but worth the read.

Better than the first in the series. I enjoyed Charlie a bit more. He is definitely maturing as a character. Short book with pretty good action. Only problem....ending 25% is pretty absurd and unrealistic, but fir a B-movie, I guess it is a fun read.

As I said in my review of Book 1, the first two Harry Homewood books in his series and then O God of Battles are more substantial.

Book 2 was also fantastic! They win some, they lose some; they talk through the potential risks and rewards. Craig DiLouie does such a wonderful job making the characters so really and making you want to know more about them. Great read! I'm ready for book 3!

You can't keep a good man submerged!

A very ambitious but anxious US Navy Lt. In WWII deals with second rate equipment, third rate skippers as he attempts to do his duty . Oh yes, he leaves his girl as he departs & finds another in Japanese controlled Philippines. Will his risks ruin his career? Will he lose one or both girls? Will the torpedoes pose a threat to Japanese shipping? Gotta read this to find out. By the end of 1943 you may ask yourself: did we win this conflict or not?

WOW!

As a work of fiction, this is one of the best books I have have read. Except for Charlie Harrison's reconnaissance trip to the beach to make contact with the guerrilla forces, which couldn't happen in the real navy, the book was one I was unable to put down. I look forward to the next book in the series. As a destroyer veteran myself, I am very curious about what life was like on the boats of WWII.

Great read

I have always enjoyed anything to do with submarines Back in the late 50's I was able to go on a overnight on a diesel sub. This story brought back memories of what it was like. Except without the war! The story kept me turning the pages. I hope that there will be more in this series
