Stephanie is a New Adult romance author who debuted her first series in Spring of 2014, but her love affair with books began at an early age. She consumed them from the moment she learned to read, loving nothing more than to get lost in the fictional worlds that came to life on the pages. Creating her own stories was something she always enjoyed but never pursued until she wrote Finding Ever After, her first novel. It has been a dream come true ever since.
She has many passions outside books, including hiking, traveling, drawing, painting, design, baking and cake decorating. Prior to the release of her first novel, she was running her own bakery and cake shop in the small coastal town where she was born and raised and returned home to after moving away for college. Becoming an author has been an incredible journey, one she hopes never ends.
Woah, Momma! This book blew me away! It sucked me in at the prologue and I couldn’t put it down! There was no adulting allowed until I finished this book!
Nora is unknowingly sucked into a scary game of cat-and-mouse when her best friend disappears after a string of murders occur near her. She had no idea that she was a part of this sick game, and had to be very leery of who she trusted.
“It was unsettling enough to think that whoever was responsible might be watching, but that it could be someone I knew…there was just no way. But the seeds of doubt and suspicion had been planted.”
I absolutely loved James in this story—best friend’s older brother, an army man, and a protector. And then there was Shaw. Another swoonworthy military man.
“Don’t want less complicated, sweetheart. Want you.”
This story kept me guessing the entire time. I kept changing my guess as to who was the killer, and it wasn’t until the end that I had finally figured it out.
I have been a huge fan of Ms. McManus from her Ever After series, and I loved her first foray into romantic suspense just as much, if not more than the band boys. I loved how she referenced them as well! I look forward to many more books from this talented author! ~ Tiffany, 5 stars
Red Red Rose is Stephanie Hoffman McManus’ debut romantic-suspense novel and wow was I sucked into this one. I'm usually pretty good at sussing out who the baddie is, but man this one lead me on a merry chase. The plot flowed nicely and the characters were well written.
Although this is "romantic" there isn't any sexy times in it, which was a bit of a bummer. I also wish the epilogue (one week in the future) would have gave a few details on how one of the characters reacted to who the "baddie" was. It seemed like a loose end, but maybe we will hear more in subsequent books. I also wasn't overly crazy about the James situation. It rode the love triangle line a little too closely, and I didn't see the need for that angle to be part of the story at all.
Overall though I was really impressed with this one and look forward to reading more books in this series.
“Sometimes our hearts recognize what it takes our eyes longer to see.”
Wow! What a difference Red Red Rose is compared to Stephanie Hoffman McManus' Ever After series!! I love when authors write different genres and blow them both out of the park. That is exactly what she did with Red Red Rose!! It was SO GOOD!!! I loved that it was full of suspense! It kept me on my toes the whole time. I didn't know who was good and who was bad! One minute I thought it was one person, then the next, I thought it was someone else!! I loved all the characters. I can't wait to see what's next. I'm really hoping to get more of James. I would love to read his story. This was not only full of suspense, it also made me laugh out loud. One of my favorite parts was the coffee jokes!! I busted up when Spencer told Nora his joke...
"Why is coffee better than women?" When I told him I don't know, he replied smoothly.
"Because coffee goes down easier.”
Oh my gosh I couldn't stop laughing. I think I told my whole office that joke! In all seriousness, I LOVED it, and I can't wait to get my hands on book 2!
Nora and Emily have been best friends since they were teenagers. After attending the same college, both of them returned to their home town and developed a successful business model that quickly became the hottest new coffee shop in town, Urban Grind. When Emily mysteriously disappears while a serial killer is on the loose, Nora, wracked with grief and frustration over the lack of attention being paid to Emily’s case, attempts to take matters into her own hands.
Shortly after her disappearance, an incredibly handsome new customer starts frequenting Nora’s shop on a daily basis and serves as a well needed distraction for everyone with connections to Emily. With the stress of her friend missing, duties at the shop needing taken care of, unwanted attention from her ex and a developing crush on this strange and secretive new man, Nora’s world is flipped upside down and does her best to live from day to day while keeping Emily on the forefront of her mind.
This is one of the most well written mystery/thriller books I’ve read in quite a while. Not only does the author draw you in to the suspense and detective portion of the story, she also introduces just the right amount of romance as a side bonus to the main plot. The best part about reading this book is that it leaves you constantly guessing at who is doing what in the story. As an avid reader of the mystery genre I thought I knew what to expect and was extremely pleased to find out that I literally knew nothing.
It is very important to note that this was the author’s first crime novel but yet the writing was expertly crafted. I don’t think I came across one plot hole or unanswered question by the time I reached the last page. This book CAN be read as a standalone but in the dedication page the author does let on that she is planning to create a series of standalones with certain characters making repeat appearances in later novels. This was an incredible novel and I look forward to reading with Stephanie comes up with next. Not only was it completely realistic, it also added an element of magic, mystery and passion that not even James Patterson could touch.
I'm not sure where to start with this review...this was my first book from author Stephanie Hoffman McManus and hopefully it won't be my last as she'll write another romance suspense.
Right away the prologue grabbed me and I was sucked down the rabbit hole. I had my list of suspects but I was not prepared for the twists and turns I was taken on. I had two firm suspects in my mind but both turned out not to be the culprit. To say I was surprised was an understatement. I didn't see the writing on the wall until the last possible second. He was the furthest from my mind when I imagined who the killer could be. Suspense has to be my third favorite genre and this book did not disappoint. I stayed up into the wee hours of the night reading page by page.
I was just as engrossed in this book as I would a James Patterson or Lisa Gardner novel...it was that good! I really hope Ms. McManus makes this a standalone series.
I also enjoyed the simple romance of the story. It wasn't in your face but a subtle blossoming of two people with a connection getting to know each other.
There were a few questions I still had at the end of the book that I would like answers to...
All in all an amazing read that I highly recommend to romance suspense fans!
Red Red Rose By Stephanie Hoffman McManus 5 Stars *****
Wow!! This debut novel had me drawn in at the prologue and I couldn’t put it down! Nora owns a coffee shop with her friend Emily. But Nora gets drawn into a game of cat and mouse when her friend Emily goes missing, following a string of murders in the local area of women with red hair. The people who work alongside Nora in the coffee shop have all manners of personalities that are fun and protective. I loved Reggie as he sounded like a few of my friend’s. Nora receives roses from her ex that was a relationship that ended badly, he just will not leave her be. He gets quite jealous when she befriends the gorgeous Shaw (a gorgeous regular coffee customer). Emily’s brother James comes home from leave on the Army when he hears about his sisters disappearance...can he protect his sisters best friend? The plot flowed nicely and the character’s gelled together nicely. I would of loved to have seen the character’s reactions when the murderer was revealed. But it was still a brilliant read! I also liked how we get to read from the murderer’s perspective and see his plans forming. Almost makes you want to shout at Nora and tell her to watch out! There were a few times when I thought I had guessed the murderer and that kept proving me wrong. Definitely in for one hell of a roller coaster ride! Want a book full of suspense? Then you need to read this one!! Looking forward to reading the next in the series !
Red Red Rose by Stephanie Hoffman McManus was an awesome read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the author’s note at the end was a nice treat. I would have never guessed that this was her first suspense novel; she absolutely nailed it in my opinion. I would have to agree with her that reading Nancy Drew and watching Criminal Minds would definitely give you many great ideas for suspenseful writing. I loved the way she introduced all the characters and I loved the twist at the end. The book drew me in right from the beginning and honestly I felt like I was watching a Criminal Minds episode. The author held my interest the whole way through and I finished it in a little under 24 hrs. (I believe that is a new personal best reading record for me!) As I was getting closer to the end of the book I was certain that I knew who the villain was in the story and I was completely blown away with who was the actual villain was – I absolutely certain that it was a totally different character and was so sure that it was him that I actually began to root against him and wanted the female main character to not get drawn into him. I am giving this novel 5 stars!! I highly recommend this novel and watch if you don’t say “Wow, I did not see that coming,” when you finish it. I look forward to more suspenseful novels from Stephanie Hoffman McManus.
The suspense will grab you right from the start! The story starts off with a disappearance and then gradually into a possible serial killer on the loose. You will not be able to put this book down until you know the answer to who done it!? The best mix of romance in the mist of a mystery. 5- stars! For more indie book reviews: Myindieauthorfix.com
Classified as Romantic Suspense. Really not. I don’t like to keep guessing who the male romantic interest will be. At the halfway mark I literally had no idea who she was supposed to be with. I really didn’t like that this book honestly felt like there should’ve been 3 or so chapters about Emily. I felt like I turned on the tv to watch Criminal Minds, but I missed the first 15 minutes. Absolutely no back story. Throw in a bunch of male characters and call it a mystery. Very strange way to tell a story. Basically have doubts about everyone. The end...
Red Red Rose, the first book in Stephanie Hoffman McManus’ Shades of Death series, was an exciting and mysterious story.
The romance was balanced with the creative thrills of attempting to discover the murderer. Each new death provided an opportunity to try to determine which of the characters had the motive and means.
On the flip side, we meet some sexy individuals who seem to be falling in love as much as lust. I look forward to continuing to read this series!
Well what can I say. In fact there is only one word to describe the book, FANTASTIC!!! I was hooked from beginning to end. I never read thriller books usually as I can't seem to get into them ,there unusually long and boring but this book I just couldn't put down and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series well done Stephanie u have succeeded were other thriller writers have failed
This book was so good!! This author is fairly new to me but she is quickly becoming a favorite. I loved the characters, I was quickly drawn into the story and invested. I love a good suspenseful story. I had it narrowed down to a couple people, and I loved that I wasn’t 100% sure “who did it”! There is some romance, family and friends. It had all the elements I enjoy. It’s a must read.
This book has everything needed to hold your attention. It includes a murder mystery, romances, friends and lovers! I can't wait to enjoy her next book in this series.
I was so excited & finally had the priviledge to finally meet this author last month at PennedCon. I started reading her Finding After series 3 years ago and fell in love with her writing. I have read all of her books and cannot wait what she has in store next!
I don't know what took me so long to read this series! It had everything from suspense, murder, kidnapping, heartpounding moments that blew me away!
"You’re the one thing I’ll fight the hardest for and never stop fighting for"
Loved the story plot and how the story kept you guessing who the killer was. I had my suspicions but still was a little surprised. Loved all the characters and dove right into the next book after reading this one and receiving the third book this weekend! So excited!
Red Red Rose (Shades of Death Book 1) By: Stephanie Hoffman McManus 5 out of 5 stars
The story Red Red Rose (Shades of Death Book 1) by Stephanie Hoffman McManus is a romantic suspense book. It tells the tale of Nora who along with her best friend Emily has opened and runs a coffee shop in Washington state. Then Emily goes missing. Knowing Emily would not just take off and not tell anyone Nora wants Emily’s case to be vigorously investigated. On top of this Nora find a man she finds attractive and is interested in. Should she be suspicious of this new stranger coming into her life? After a series of alarming and disturbing occurrences can Nora feel safe again or is someone close to her the prime suspect?
This story is amazing. It is told from Nora’s POV with some narration also told through the eyes of a disturbed individual. The clues that are given lead you from point to point in the investigation. I have read many mystery/suspense romances, however not all of them bring the amount of detail and complexity. I like a story that will have you guessing until the end. Sure there are characters that fit the profile however upon close examination, do they really? The atmosphere created throughout is awesome. It creates just enough scare factor that you find yourself looking up from reading just to make sure everything is okay.
The characters in this book are many and colorful. You have the coffee shop employees, who banter back and forth which brings a smile, the regular customers who add character to the business and to the lives of the employees, and the family of Emily who are along with Nora are searching for answers. All of them are well developed and add their own life to the story. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves suspense/romance. There is adult language and scenes that some may find disturbing. I would recommend this story to anyone 18 years or older.
Red Red Rose is a gripping and thrilling story that will have the reader captivated from the very beginning. Stephanie Hoffman McManus is able to capture the raw emotions of her characters with such expressive descriptions. It is almost as if the reader can feel exactly what the character is feeling. This story is a classic whodunit that will have the reader guessing the whole way through. Red Red Rose is told through the perspective of Nora with sporadic snippets from the killer’s perspective. Nora, a local coffee shop owner, is barely holding it together since the disappearance of her best friend and business partner, Emily. With a string of murders in the nearby area, Nora is fearing the worse. Couple that with a recent split from a chauvinistic jerk who refuses to let go and a sexy stranger that has mysteriously popped up, Nora’s life seems to get more complicated by the minute. Nora finds herself drawn to Shaw more with each day even in spite of Nathan’s multiple attempts at reconciliation. But when Nathan denies leaving all the bouquets of roses on her doorstep at night Nora begins to wonder who could be sending them? Could Shaw be sending them? Is it possible she has a creepy stalker? Or could she be the next target? Is it possible the killer is someone she knows? Will the police break the case in time to save her and Emily? Or has the killer already murdered Emily? I found this book riveting. I didn’t want to put it down until I finished it. I found myself convinced I knew the identity of killer only to change my mind a half dozen other times. To say this book was suspenseful would simply be an understatement. I liked that the epilogue was from the perspective of Shaw. It provided an interesting insight into his mind and emotions. This is book one of the Shades of Death series and I cannot wait until October when book two comes out. This might just be my new favorite series.
Red Red Rose is Stephanie Hoffman McManus’ debut mystery/romance novel and I have to say she did an excellent job of giving readers a book that’ll keep them guessing as they read. Red Red Rose kept me guessing the entire way through!
McManus did an expert job of weaving her tale of mystery all the while developing deep, complex characters. She teases you with just enough information to make you want to solve the mystery, but still delivers enough romance to keep it lighthearted and fun while reading. She has so many mysterious, sexy, and interesting men that you can never quite pinpoint the bad guy until it’s too late!
With that being said, I would have to admit this book didn’t completely capture my complete attention until about 50% of the way through. The first half just needed a bit of a pick me up. You see a lot of characters, relationships not only with Nora, the main character but also with the victims. To me, it was a little more drawn out than what I necessarily needed. Although the first half was somewhat long, McManus did spend that time developing and setting the mystery all the while making me second guess almost all of the character’s motives in the book. Once I reached the 50% mark, I was hooked unable to set down my kindle until the very end. I couldn’t wait to see if my guess was right!
Overall, I would say McManus has yet another success on her hands. I loved that she wrote something different and it’s made me remember why I love a romance with some good old murder mystery thrown in. She’s given me more characters that I want to hear more about. I am so excited to see what she has in store for us with her second book for this series.
This review is from: Red Red Rose (Shades of Death Book 1) (Kindle Edition)
Red Red Rose. By Stephanie Hoffman McManus. 4 Stars
"Sometimes our hearts recognize what it takes our eyes longer to see." The story takes place in the community of Bellingham, Washington State in the Pacific Northwest. Nora Scott realizes she is caught up in a deadly game where the body count is rising and Nora fears the next victim has been taken, her best friend Emily. Nora had no idea she was part of the game and did not know why and who to trust. Nora's childhood was not a carefree one so she has chosen to block it out. She lives a happy life and with her best friend Emily they co own a coffee house. Emily does not match the profile of the missing dead girls, but Nora knows deep down the same man took her.
Enter Spencer Shaw who Emily's father hires to find her, hopefully alive. Spencer is ex military and has to look at everyone as a suspect including Nora. Everyone at the coffee house is like family and she fears for their safety. Then there is Shaw who has been a regular lately only ever orders black coffee. Everyone there enjoys gossiping about him. As the search for Emily seems to b e going nowhere , her brother James takes leave from the military to help find his sister. Wow just wow! McManus did an excellent job with this book, it had me guessing all the way thru. She gives you just enough information to hang yourself on and your saying What the Crap! Each time I thought I had it figured out I was wrong. At the end I had my suspect picked out,I never saw it coming and it blindsided me. I never once thought to consider the person. This was thrilling romance sit on the edge of your seat but your nails kind of book.
Wow is all I can say at the moment. Red, Red, Rose by Stephanie Hoffman McManus was one heck of an adventure. I thought I had it all figured out, I had my suspicions and I was still surprised! Nora owns Urban Grind coffee shop in Washington with her best friend Emily, who disappeared a month before hand. When too many things happen and its hard to pinpoint who is doing what, she is confused and starts to question everyone and everything. When the man she starts dating is suddenly brought in for questioning, she makes rash decisions and doesn't know if they're the right ones. When you start to question who you can trust, who do you turn to? Nora owns a coffee shop in Washington with Emily, her best friend who's been missing for a month amongst all the college killings around the area. Nora has many regular customers and they all pass police questioning when some new evidence is found in the stores dumpster, including the man she just went on a date with. When Emily's brother comes home on emergency leave, he stays with Nora to keep her safe amidst all the chaos going on. When he warns her off her new man and makes a request to wait for him in December, it throws her for a loop. Even through all the craziness happening, Nora is still level headed and living her life while still doing what she can to help find her friend. When we find out who the real kidnapper is and his link to Nora, I was stunned to say the least but he was on my radar! Can Nora help save herself and her friend while she waits for her rescuer? I can't and won't give away who the good guy is as you need to find that out on your own. But this book is a page turner. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read Emily's story!!
Red Red Rose has everything a great book needs…adventure, romance, enough twists and suspicious characters to keep a reader guessing, and characters that are fun, alpha-like and even some scary characters. This is a story about Nora. She is a smart, strong, friendly, woman who doesn’t know just how beautiful she is and how she affects other people, especially the men around her. Nora owns a coffee shop with her best friend, Emily. When Emily goes missing everyone becomes a suspect, even the customers who have been coming to the coffee shop since they opened, like Danny the techy guy who always is watching Nora. Then there’s the tall drink of water, who is mysterious and funny and smoldering hot, Shaw. Shaw is attracted to Nora and her feelings confuse her because she just ended things with Nathan, and yeah Nathan's a suspect too. Even her friends and co-workers are questioned by police. Nora wants Emily home, safe. Emily’s family obviously wants her safe too. James is Emily’s hot soldier brother who must help keep Nora safe. Lies are told, truths are discovered. Love is found for some while others feel burned. Can someone Nora actually knows be the serial killer on the lose? McManus is awesome! I can not say enough great things about this book. I liked that while Nora wanted and needed her man she wasn’t so consumed by him that she was stupid in return. Some books let the heroine turn to mush when the alpha hero walks by. McManus made sure Nora was strong but don’t get me wrong Nora very much noticed and appreciated her man and he was the same with her. It has been a while since I read mystery stories but I’m glad I read this one! Here’s hoping McManus has more stories to share with us!!
From reading the synopsis of Red Red Rose by Stephanie Hoffman McManus – I was pretty sure I would like this book. After reading it – I can say I loved it. The fact that this is the 1st book in the Shades of Death series – makes me excited to read the next books! The characters are developed in a real manner. The dialogue seems natural and unforced. The chemistry between a couple of the characters is palpable.
Nora’s adoptive family brought her out of uncertainty and into a life where she had possibilities and prospects. She left behind the sad and traumatic episodes of her youth and embraced her second chance at life. Nora and her best friend Emily have embarked on a business venture - a successful coffee house in Washington state. When Emily disappears - her friends panic and the police theorize that Emily ran off with someone or just ran off. Nora has been watching reports of murdered women in their area - and imagines the worst. Nora knows that Emily wouldn’t just up and run off - they have a business to run! As Nora tries to keep pressure on the police and keep the business afloat, a mysterious man shows up in the coffee shop - maybe this is the distraction that Nora needs? But who is he?
Shaw is a mystery, he’s in town to work - only to work, however, his attention is drawn to the woman working at the coffee shop. Maybe he can mix business with pleasure? Can he help Nora figure out where Emily is before it’s too late? After another woman ends up dead - the rug is seemingly pulled out from under Shaw. Can he keep Nora safe? Why does it seem like she’s the one in danger? Where is Emily?
The plot takes a dramatic and unexpected turn and pushes all involved to the brink. Is Emily alive? Will Nora and Shaw workout? You’ll have fun finding out!
Red Red Rose is the first suspensful romance novel in the Shades of Death series by Stephanie Hoffman McManus.
The novel starts with an unknown person breaking into an office to retrieve a sealed file. When he returns the woman he spent the night with finds him and starts asking questions. To silence her, he kills her and leaves in his truck.
The next scene is in Bellingham, Wa where people are watching the news reporting another missing girl in a coffee shop. The coffee shop is run by Nora who is helped by her employess Cassie and Reggie to name a few.
A few weeks ago her best friend Emily didnt come home to the condo they share together. And is now missing. Because she is labeled as a wild, the police arent taking it too seriously but Nora knows Emily wouldn't have just left without saying something.
There has been a number of murders going on. All with the same M.O: red haired young woman but Emily doesnt fit that description. Nora is having a hard time and starting to lose hope. Not only that but Nora also has an ex boyfriend who wont leave her alone despite how many times she tells him its over.
When things off Emily's start appearing in the garbage behind her job and in Emily's car, the police start to suspect it's someone who knows her. But who could it be?
I really enjoyed this book. I was hooked from the prologue. I felt like I was suspicious of every male character that came in contact with Nora. I was so surprised when the serial killer was revealed.
I loved the characters and Nora's romance. And I loved James, Emily's brother. So happy he will be appearing in another which I will definitely be reading.
There is a serial killer on the loose who loves redheads. The state of Seattle is in a panic. The body count is rising and the police have yet to find any suspects. Nora Scott is sick with worry. Her roommate and best friend Emily has disappeared. Though she doesn’t fit the profile, Nora is panicked that the killer got her too. Nora met Emily while in college and they remained friends ever since. They just recently opened a coffee shop together. About four months after it opened, Emily disappeared. The police have questioned all her workers and even her customers. Nora finds it hard to believe that it could be any of them that took Emily. A tall dark and handsome guy by the name of Shaw becomes a regular customer and they hit it off. He’s just the distraction she needs to take her mind off of Emily’s disappearance. James, Emily’s brother, takes a leave of absence from the army to try and find his sister. While staying with Nora, he confesses his feelings to her. James and Nora have been flirting for the past five years. She would have jumped at the chance to be with him but now she has feelings for Shaw. On top of this, her crazy ex-boyfriend won’t leave her alone. Everything is happening at once and Nora is going crazy. As more bodies are found, the evidence is piling up against Shaw. How is Nora going to figure out who she can trust when she becomes the next target? This book will have you trying to figure out who the killer is until the very end. I really enjoyed reading it.
Red Red Rose starts out a little different than most books. It starts out with a prologue written in the point of view of the serial killer. The prologue draws you in so much, you cannot possibly put the book down. The book mail focuses on the main character, Nora, and the coffee shop that she owns and runs with her best friend, roommate, and business partner, Emily. The problem is that Emily has gone missing. There is a serial killer that has been killing woman and Nora believes that he has Emily. At first the police do not take Nora seriously, but as the killings continue, they begin to take Nora more seriously. As the investigation into the serial killer continues, the author makes sure that you have no idea who the killer actually is. She drops hints here and there making you feel like you are sure who it is one minute, but the next minute, you are sure that same person couldn’t possibly be the killer. Despite everyone in her life being a suspect, a customer who frequents her coffee shop, Shaw, seems to draw Nora’s attention. She wants to give him a chance at a relationship, but with a serial killer running loose, is that the safest thing to do? Stephanie Hoffman McManus has this whole romantic suspense thing down pat! The romance and suspense perfectly balance each other out. Throughout the book you are afraid for Nora and Emily, you feel excitement for Nora, and a few times you may even want to scream. Stephanie Hoffman McManus, however, does let you leave feeling incredibly satisfied.
As the Pacific Northwest is rocked by a string of brutal murders, Nora Scott is caught up in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse.
This book will take you on a roller coaster ride that you will not want to end. With all the twists and turns within the story just when you think you have it figured out..... Bam, no you don't, keep reading and try again!
The suspense will pull you in right from the beginning and hold you captive.
Complete with disappearances and possible serial killings, then add some romance and what else could you ask for in a romantic suspense.
Nora is pulled right into the middle of a deadly game when her best friend Emily turns up missing.
Add in James and Shaw, two incredibly hot alpha males, with military grounds, no less!
Who is the serial killer? Why is he targeting red headed women? Is Nora possibly the catalyst for his obsession?
Targeting Emily the killer goes outside of his profile box but Nora knows it's him and why is he doing this???
So many questions that this story will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way through.
The talented author Stephanie Hoffman McManus has written a amazing book to add to her already stellar collection.
This is definitely a must read for everyone who loves a good mystery with just the right amount of romance mixed in.
I cannot wait for there to be more books in this series and I don't usually recommend books but this is one that I would definitely recommend to all.
Stephanie Hoffman McManus created a new favorite of mine called Red Red Rose. This is book 1 of the Shade of Death Series. The writing style for this book was very well laid out. You understand everything as it is happening and she gives you just enough information so that you can form your own conclusions then be blown away at how wrong you really were. First there is Nora and Emily, who are best friends, room mates and buisness partners for their coffee shop Urban Grind. After going on a trip with her boyfriend then suddenly disappearing (even though her car made it home) Nora isn't sure what to think. There has been a string of kidnappings and murders Nora fears the worst for Emily, except Emily does not seem to fit the image description of the other victims. While waiting for any information on Emily since her disappearance about a month ago, Nora and her employees manage as best as they can. Until Shaw shows up, the sexy mysterious man that no one knows anything about...and he likes Nora... After breaking up with her cheating boyfriend Nora starts receiving roses and "I'm sorry" cards, why won't her cheating ex leave her alone?! When she confronts him about it he is conpletely clueless as to what she is referring to. Which brings the questions...who is sending her dozens on roses, who is sorry, and what are they sorry for? Can Nora figure out who is sending her apologies and why...does it have something to do with Emily? This story makes you question everything and everyone. Nothing is what it seems and you can't trust anyone...
5 Stars Red Red Rose Written by Stephanie Hoffman Mcmanus
Its winter in Washington state and local college girls are starting to go missing. the only thing the have in common is their bright red hair. Though Nora's best friend Emily has gone missing, but she is a blonde. Police aren't sure if her dissappearance is connected or if she just ran away with a guy. Nora and Emily's family know otherwise and have to convince the local police that the cases are linked. It doesn't happen though until a shocking twist in the case. Emily's brother returns home on leave and is staying with Nora to keep her safe Nora breaks a desk and James goes out to the garage with her to fond screws to fix it when they discover a bundle of bolonde hair in the car. They all know its Emily's.
Then theres Shaw, tall, dark and handsome starts coming in to the shop shortly after Em dissappears and Nora is instantly attracted to him. They go on a few dates where Nora finds out Spencer (Shaw) is former military but doesnt talk much about his past. She tries to defeat him in paint ball that doesnt go well. She realizes she is falling for him and he for her, he tells her that when all this is over with Emily he will give her 30 days to decide if they want to consider keeping the relationship going.
This book seamlessly parallels two story lines following both Nora and the Washington Strangler as the news calls him. This book keeps you guessing right up to the very end. Just when you think you have it all figured out you are wrong.
“Sometimes two hearts come together and they just recognize something in the other that calls to them.”
Red Red Rose by Stephanie Hoffman McManus is the first book in the Shades of Death series. It is also the first romantic suspense by Stephanie Hoffman McManus (much to my surprise – it was just that good) – this was an amazing novel! Here was so much to this novel. It constantly had the wheels turning in my head.
Nora owns her own coffee shop in Bellingham, Washington. She is close with her parents and most of her employees, and also makes the effort to get to know many of her customers. Her best friend and roommate, Emily, is missing without a trace and no one seems to be taking her disappearance seriously. Nora, whether she admits it or not, appears to have many admirers in her life. James, Emily’s older brother – a special forces Army military man. Danny – a frequenter of Nora’s coffee shop, coming by almost every day and staying almost always until close. Her ex, who even after their breakup will not leave her alone. And then there is Shaw, the mysterious, but sexy customer.
This novel had me hooked from the very beginning and always kept me guessing. It seemed like every chapter had me flip flopping on my opinion of many of the characters making me constantly question who was good and who was bad. This is a wonderful first novel in the Shades of Death series and I cannot wait to read more!
