About the author

Dhandapani Jeyakanthan, otherwise known as 'JK' among his friends and comrades, is a multi-dimensional personality, well known in the literary circle as a prolific writer, commentator, pamphleteer, film-maker and critic. He has won acclaim for wielding his pen against social injustices and economic inequality. Jeyakanthan was born in a family of agriculturists in Manjakuppam, a suburb of Cuddalore of the erstwhile Madras Presidency. Brought up by his mother and maternal uncles, he got interested in politics at a young age as his uncles were actively involved in it. Jeyakanthan dropped himself out of school after completing fifth grade, as he thought studies would hinder his political activism.

In 1946, he left for Chennai in search of livelihood, where he performed odd jobs, before ending up as a compositor in the printing press of Communist Party of India (CPI). His association with the CPI instilled the ideas of the movement, where he got to accompany leaders such as P. Jeevanandham, Baladandayutham and S. Ramakrishnan. The leaders of the party encouraged him to write. After graduating to an active member of the party, he got to learn about topics pertaining to world literature, culture, politics, economics and journalism. It was during this time, Jeyakanthan started writing for pro-communist magazines. Over the next few years, he established himself as one of the top-most writers in the party. His early works were first published in the party newspaper Janasakthi, and soon other magazines like Sarasvathi, Thamarai, Santhi, Manithan, Sakthi and Samaran published his works. His early works focused on the plight of slum-dwellers who were settled in and around the party office.

Jeyakanthan was married to his cousin. The couple had two daughters and a son. Jeyakanthan wrote his first short story for a Tamil magazine titled Sowbakiyavathi, which got it published in 1953. Following early success, Jeyakanthan started writing for mainstream magazines such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Dinamani Kadir, who published a number of short stories, particularly in the 1960s. In 1964, Jayakanthan entered films by co-producing and directing a venture titled Unnaipol Oruvan, based on his novel.

His writings reflect his views on the morals, ethics and the societal norms as a whole. His writings are vivid portrayals of life and relationships, with all the intricacies and beauty of reality, and with a profound love for humanity. He is one among the few of the original writers of the Tamil Literature. He is a man of insight, pride and scholarship whose writings expressed with unparalleled courage and utmost honesty speaks for all the generations to come. A winner of Sahitya Acadamy Award and Fellowship, Jnanpita Award, Soviet Land Nehru Award, the Russian Federation's Order of Friendship and the Padma Bhushan.

🔆ஜெயகாந்தன் அவர்களின் கதைகள் , பல பதிப்பகத்தில் விதவிதமான அச்சுகளில் வெளிவருகின்றன. இந்தக் குறிப்பிட்ட பிரதியை வாங்குவதற்கான காரணம் , ஆனந்த விகடனில் வெளிவந்த அதே வடிவத்தில் , இந்தப் புத்தகம் அச்சிடப்பட்டிருக்கிறது . அன்று வந்த விளம்பரங்கள் , நகைச்சுவைகள் , செய்தி துணுக்குகள் , அதே வடிவத்தில் வெளியாகிருக்கின்றன. நாளிதழில் வரும் தொடர் கதைகளை , தனியாக வெட்டி , சேகரித்து வைத்து தனியே பைனடிங் செய்து படிக்கும் அனுபவம் கிடைத்தது .

🔆விழுதுகள் : எந்தவொரு அலங்காரமும் , அடையாளமும் இல்லாத ஊர் - ஓங்கூர் . அங்கே 4 பேர் , வெவ்வேறு காரணங்களால் வாழ்க்கை மீது இவர்களுக்கும் , இவர்கள் மீது வாழ்க்கைக்கும் - வெறுப்பும் வெறுமையும் கொண்டிருந்தது . வாழ்க்கையில் விரக்தியானவர்கள் இப்பொது சாமியார்கள் . கிராமத்தில் இருக்கும் மக்களும் அவர்களை பெரிதும் மதித்தனர் . அங்கே நடக்கும் சம்பவங்களே கதை .

🔆ஹீரோவுக்கு ஒரு ஹீரோயின் : கனவன் தான் உலகம் என நினைக்கும் மனைவி . நடுத்தர குடும்பம் , அளவான வருமானம் என அழகாக இருக்கின்றன. தன் கனவனுக்கும் வேறொரு பெண்ணுடன் பழக்கம் ஏற்பட்டு , அதனால் அவள் கருவுற்றிருக்கிறாள் என்று தெரிந்தால் ஒரு மனைவி எப்படி நடந்து கொள்வாள் . நாம் நினைக்கும் எந்த மாதிரியும் மதுரம் நடந்துக் கொள்ளவில்லை . ஏன்னென்றால் அவள் ஜெயகாந்தனின் ஹீரோயின் .

🔆சீசர் : தன் வீட்டுக் கூரையை சரி செய்யாமல் அடுத்த வீட்டு கூரையைக் குறை சொல்லும் மனிதர்களை பற்றிய கதை .

நான் மிகவும் விரும்பி வாங்கிய தொகுப்பு இது. ஜெயகாந்தனின் எழுத்துகளை படிக்க விரும்புவோர் அவரின் சிறுகதைகளின் மூலம் தொடங்கலாம் .

இந்த புத்தகம் பற்றிய அணிந்துரையில் ஜெயகாந்தன் இக்கதை தொகுப்பு "இவற்றை எழுதியவனையும் வாசகர்களையும் இவற்றை எழுதிய காலத்துக்கே அழைத்துச் செல்வது இதன் சிறப்பு அம்சம்" என்று எழுதியுள்ளார். ஆனால் இத்தொகுப்பில் உள்ள எல்லாக் கதைகளும் காலத்தைக் கடந்து இன்றும் ஏற்புடையதாக உள்ளது என்பதே நான் வாசித்த அனுபவம். முக்கியமாக பிரளயம் கதை இவ்வருடம் (2015) சென்னையில் வந்த மழையும், வெள்ளமும் செய்த கொடுமையை அம்மாசி மற்றும் அவரது சேரி மக்களின் வாழ்க்கைப் பிண்ணனியில் விவரித்தது போலவே உள்ளது. பலதரப்பட்ட மக்களை இந்தத் தொகுதி மூலம் நமக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்து வைத்து அவர்களுடனான ஒரு உறவை நமக்கு ஏற்படுத்திவிடுகிறார் ஜெயகாந்தன். மனித உறவுகளும், வாழ்க்கை நெறிகளும், நெறிகளில் இருந்து விலகி இருக்க தேவையான காரணங்களும், இறப்பும் இறப்பைச் சார்ந்த தர்க்கங்களும் பெரும்பான்மையான கதைகளின் மையச்சரடாக இந்த கதைகளில் இருக்கின்றது. இத்தொகுதியில் உள்ள 20 கதை/கட்டுரைகள் அனைத்தும் 1964-1972 வருடங்களுக்குள் வெளிவந்தவை. இவ்வளவு ஆண்டுகளாக இவரைப் படிக்காமல் இருந்ததற்காக வருத்தமாக இருக்கின்றது. ஜெயகாந்தன் மறைந்த ஆண்டு இப்புத்தகத்தை நான் படிக்க நேர்ந்தது என்ன மாதிரியான சங்கல்ப்பம் எனத் தெரியவில்லை. முன்னுரையில் இத்தொகுதியை தொகுத்த ராம்-வனிதா தம்பதியர் எழுதிய கீழ்கண்ட வரிகள் நூற்றுக்கு நூறு உண்மை.

1964 ம் ஆண்டு முதல் 1969 ம் ஆண்டு வரையிலான காலத்தில் ஜெயகாந்தன் எழுதி விகடனில் பிரசுரமான இருபது(20) கதைகளின் தொகுப்பே இந்த புத்தகம்.

இந்த புத்தகத்தில் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த கதை “ஹீரோவுக்கு ஒரு ஹூரோயின்” & “பிரளயம்”.

ஜெயகாந்தன் கதையின் வழியாக நம் சமூகத்தையும் அதன் சடங்குகளையும், அவலங்களையும் சாட்டை எடுத்து விளாசுகிறார்.
அன்றே தன் கதைகளில் Feminism, love, possessive, sex, self respect, Purpose of your life, Exploitation of marriage, sex worker, mental illness, freedom, introvert, relationship, lifestyle குறித்து எழுதியிருக்கிறார். எ.கா : பிரளயம் என்ற கதையில் (இன்று காலை அந்தக் குடிசைகளில் ஒன்றின் முன்னே கெட்டி மேளம் கொட்டி முழக்கிற்று. பெண்கள் நலுங்கு பாடினர். மஞ்சளுக்கும் கயிற்றுக்கும் பஞ்சமில்லை. தீனனுக்கும் – பாப்பாத்திக்கும் எளிமையான, பவித்திரமான சடங்குகளோடு தாம்பத்ய உரிமை வழங்கிற்று அந்தச் சமூகம்). - கலைச்செல்வன் செல்வாரஜ்.

This is my first book of Jayakanthan. Definitely he is much ahead of his time. The stories are all awesome to read, not only it takes us to that time period, but also providing us an opportunity to look through the forward thinker angle. I strongly recommend this book, Particularly i enjoyed the story of a person who nurtured by their grandparents and how perceives when he moved back to his parents after 18 years and he is trying to understand his father-mother relationship. Mindblowing thoughts.

All the stories in this book standout from the cultural quo and society's implications of his time. Especially loved the narration of Aadum Naarkaligal Aadugintrana,Avargal Ulle iruirargal, Agraharathu Poonai and Antharangam Punnithamanadhu which still looks afresh and Contemporary. A complete book which leaves us spellbound and lot of questions on our thought process on this society.

Jk is one of those writers who can touch /trigger a memory or emotion that you didn't even realise you had. This collection of stories does just that. It may make you smile remembering your youth, trigger an anger that you thought you've overcome, fall in love again, hit on your head to wake up...... basically make you feel and that's what a good book should do

மனித இயல்புகளையும், உணர்வுகளையும் ஜெயகாந்தனை போல் யாரும் புரிந்திருக்க முடியாது. அவர் எழுதும் ஒவ்வொரு கதாப்பாத்திரமும் அவ்வளவு தத்ரூபமாக இருப்பதற்கு அவரின் வாழ்வனுபவங்கள் தான் காரணமாக இருக்கவேண்டும். நிஜ உரையாடல்களை ஒட்டுகேட்டும் படியான அனுபவத்தை ஒவ்வொரு கதைகளிலும் வழங்கியிருக்கிறார்.

Ahead of times writing. Avar nadaiya purinji kadhaikulla poga neram edukum. After 3 or 4 stories you ll be completely into the book. Each story is told in a different way.

Can't handle sensitive plots better than him - Aasaan.

Being a generation who was born much after the writings of this author which questioned the status quo of the culture especially the women's freedom & the caste issues, I may not able to appreciate / feel the impact of his writings but some of the stories on the human nature holds still true and moves my heart. His colloquial style of writing and his inspiration of characters from the day to day life make these short stories a timeless classics.
