Continuing the story began in Shadows of Valor, Edwin is stuck back at SAC headquarters reeling from the effects of his first mission. Haunted by nightmares and recovering from a training injury, Edwin desperately seeks a solution to the horrors that blast him awake each night without fail. At the same time, war waits for no man, and the Commander assigns him a new mission, one that will take him into the heart of Veracka.
Meanwhile, Peggy is offered an ultimatum: accept enhancement or watch as Edwin is sent alone on a mission he may not survive without her. Disillusioned and suspecting her superiors intended this outcome from the beginning, Peggy must face the most difficult decision she's ever had to make. And, even if she takes the plunge, the effort may be too little, too late.
I am grateful for everyone who's read and given me feedback on Shadows of Valor and hope that you'll all enjoy Forgotten Valor as much as or even more than you did the first book.
Happy reading!
I've expanded the entire trilogy to additional formats and booksellers. :-)
(I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review).
(This review may contain spoilers).
I did like this book more than the first one. The characters were already established and it was good to see that, although Edwin was still more powerful than all of the other characters, there was more of an explanation provided (though not for his earlier skills). It was interesting to see what he could do in this book, though I didn't quite understand all of the gadgets he'd created.
I really liked the fact that the author showed more of the enemy. I would have liked to see more of a background for certain characters, but I still found it fairly easy to engage with most of them.
I liked seeing how Edwin's relationship with Peggy changed. However, I wasn't too keen on the hints of a love triangle. I didn't used to mind them so much, but they've been so over-used, I've grown sick of them.
It was really good to see Edwin have to deal with not having his memories and the friendship he formed with someone who, as a reader, I saw as the enemy at first. I'm interested to see how he'll reconcile his past with what he's seen of the opposing army so far.
I noticed less mistakes in this book, but there were still a few occasions where events I would have liked to see more of were skipped over - Peggy learning to control her abilities, for instance. And I do think that Edwin is coming across as ridiculously over-powered.
At some point, I would like to read the next book in this series. The world is interesting and engaging. I think it's worth giving the book a try.
In the sequel to Shadows of Valor, Edwin continues his training and is ultimately sent on a mission into the heart of Veracka in order to try to stop the war. But when he arrives, things don't quite go as he expected.
Well I loved this book as much as the first one. The writing, pacing, etc. are all very well done. Many authors make their second book completely different from the first, but I felt this one was a good continuation of the story. Edwin and Peggy both continue to grow as characters, and we learn a ton more about Veracka, their history, and their princess. The first part of the book deals with Oresca and Peggy, but the 2nd half is all Edwin and Veracka. There are enough twists and turns to keep my attention. The princess is a really intriguing character, and one I look forward to seeing more of in the next book.
I don't have too much bad to say about this book. Peggy maybe could have a bit more to do, and the book could have been longer. But overall, it was a great read. One of my favorites of this year. This one is going on my favorites shelf.
NOTE: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
