Jim was born in Dublin and moved to Handsworth, Birmingham when he was five. From an early age he knew that one day he would write about his adopted home. After writing eight non-fiction books he wrote his first novel A Death in Winter: 1963 in 2015. He has written three further books in the Collins and Clark Series; A Death in Summer: 1965, Death in Spring: 1968 and A Death in Autumn: 1968.

Jim has plans for a further five Collins and Clark novels and a stand alone book featuring Agnes Winter set in 1941 during the Birmingham Blitz.

A lifelong supporter of West Bromwich Albion, Jim and his friends coined the Albion's unofficial motto 'They'll always let you down.' - AND THEY DO REGULARLY!

Jim is married with two grown up children, two grandchildren and far too many books to read before he dies. But at least his house is well insulated.

So I decided to read this almost all in one go over several days. My thoughts are it has a number of useful theories and techniques all managers should know and a lot that are specific to any activity or business type.

I made a note to bend the page down on those that sparked something or I agreed with. The majority were at the end. To quote them on the 80 / 20 rule, I found the last 20% of the book the most useful for me or stuff I already knew.

They did well to sum up the theories and I did get some ideas after reading it, so result there.

Overall I will keep this book at work near my desk, I will revisit some bits that I made of note and remind myself of others I use. But the other 80% I will not.

A crash course on management theories. I picked this book up because it was one of the recommended readings for one of my modules. Some theories I learned in class were on the book which made this a good review material. Great book, but it wasn't for me at this time - maybe I'll reread this book again later when the theories can be put in practise.

It’s just a summary (listing) of already well-known management ideas. If you are very new to management literature, it could be a good introduction; otherwise the book does not provide any new/ deep idea/knowledge for those who are familiar with management books.

I had higher hopes. Maybe how the theories were collecitvely presented needed a bit more charm in writing instead of being solid and straight in displaying facts.

The book summarizes 101 theories in management and leadership field including coaching, motivation, strategy..etc and many others. What I perceived that the author, likes any of us, was confused by the enormous number of theories, studies, or cases in this particular field and felt difficult to distinguish among them. Such feeling leads to search for a place where to collect the top of these theories and elaborate in where to use it, short description of them, what particular field are, and the links with the other theories. I appreciate his effort and output.

I took two stars, one due to the "how to use it" section and the "crown king/queen" thing, which was the author perception on the theory where are the strongest point of the book is to show what the theory is exactly and the explanation for the theorist itself.

The second start was taking off due to the absence of many great theories in the field, especially on particular fields of management like project management.

The book boost up my knowledge at the history and the evolution of management theories. I felt very satisfied about the time I spent in reading, thinking and criticizing the theories.

The best ideas are the often simplest, but in management there's a tendency to make the simple sound as complicated as possible. This makes most books on management very heavy going - rammed with jargon, convoluted explanations, unnecessarily detailed examples, and a bunch of stuff designed to make the author sound clever rather than enlighten the reader.

This book almost goes to the other extreme - and as such is a great entrypoint to some of the leading ideas in management from the last century or so. Most are incredibly simple, and need no more explanation than the very short, clear, two page overviews (with diagram!) that you get here. Arranged by use case, this also makes this a handy reminder / reference guide to find tools that may be helpful for whatever it is you're trying to work out.

I was able to skim this in a couple of hours, and got a decent amount from it despite most of it being familiar, simply because it's so succinct and focused on the fundamentals.

Sometimes, detail isn't necessary. Glad I picked this one up - another of my random charity shop purchases...

Very good book, easy to dip in adn out of. Would be invalauble to new or existing managers to quickly get clued up on how to translate all the management theories on offer into practice on the shop floor (aimed at production and service envrionments).

The format of the book is excellent - you can just open it and find something meaningful and action oriented to work on now.

Read as part of teaching a module on Management Studies at university - a great practical accompaniment to all the theories that have been on offer over the past 100+ years.

Was asked to read this as part of HR department development. The theories are useful, but I can't help but feel that someone is making a fortune off what is essentially common sense..
The book itself is well written though and breaks everything down into nice manageable chunks.
It's definitely a book you have to dip into, reading it all at once would be a bit heavy.
