He is popularly known as Thakazhi, after his place of birth. He focused on the oppressed classes as the subject of his works, which are known for their attention to historic detail. He has written several novels and over 600 short stories. His most famous works are Kayar (Coir, 1978) and Chemmeen (Prawns, 1956; film adaptation, 1965). He was awarded India's highest literary award, the Jnanpith in 1984.

Where would one start from when speaking about a 1000-page book which spans several generations? Which of the many strands or which of the fleeting characters do one focus on? All one can do is stand aside and make sense of the unimaginable changes which played out over a little over a century and more in Kerala, the kind of change which swept away the most powerful of feudal families and which provided some kind of hope to the downtrodden.
Thakazhi says that the idea for the book came to him when he began looking through old revenue documents as part of his legal work. If there is one thread which one can notice through the whole book is land, its shifting ownerships and usages. He begins from a time when the Government (the erstwhile royals) begin the process of surveying and identifying land. Land taxes were about to be introduced in place of the existing system of providing a share of the crops to the 'adhikari'. A 'classipperu' (classifier), a post unheard of then, is sent to the village to assess the land.
There is not character whom we can invest in for the entire duration for there is no character who stays throughout the book. The story plays out over several layers, from the relationship between humans and land, the amassing of private property, the devious plans to retain or amass more, the change in land relations, the slow realisation of their own rights by the oppressed and the inability of the unquestioned owners of the land to cope. And of course there those curious moments, when the village first gets a taste of 'coffee' or the first time that a farmer chooses to pay money to the labourers instead of rice or even the probable origins of that oft-repeated political slur 'Kedukaryasthatha'.
When the sole school in the village opens its doors to the lower castes too, the upper castes become concerned, whether this will take away their future workers and even if they come, will they ask for their rightful wages. "Even the puranas say that they shouldn’t study," says one of them. They complain that the young ones have stopped obeying after the schools came. This discomfiture of the ruling elite, at every change that raises a question to their continued dominance, is a constant throughout.
There is also the fear of the unknown among all classes. For instance, people wonder how natives would rule when the demand for struggle against British rule arises. Thakazhi has written quite a few poignant scenes around people coping and failing to cope with change. One of my favourites was the one in which old Outha, who had remained in bed for a long time, takes a walks through the street after long, wondering at the new faces, at the people who don't recognise the well-known Outha, and at the new houses. At the end of this poignant last journey through the village, his last wish is to give grains from the family stock to the old elites, some of whom are now close to starving.
The Communist movement taking root slowly in the village and the shift of the Congress members one by one, and the counter-attacks of the upper castes against the lower castes daring to vote for the Communists all make for some fascinating reading. Surendran, one of the characters who gets a meatier role, is that ideal Communist whom the society expects to live in poverty even while working tirelessly for the masses, and who is judged more harshly than members of the other parties. But one is surprised to see the Punnapra-Vayalar struggle getting just a passing mention despite the narrative being set mostly in the areas near that.
'Kayar' is a must read for anyone seeking to understand modern Kerala, to get a sense of where we were and where we have reached.

#പുസ്തകദിനം ആണല്ലോ , മലയാളത്തിൽ ഞാൻ വായിച്ചതിൽ വെച്ചേറ്റവും മഹത്തായത് എന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയ ഒരു പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചതിന്റെ അനുഭവങ്ങൾ ഒന്നെഴുതാം , ഓർക്കുക ഇത് ആ പുസ്തകത്തെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള റിവ്യൂ അല്ല , മറിച്ച് ആ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചതിന്റെ ഓർമ്മയനുഭവങ്ങൾ ആണ് , ആ പുസ്തകം പോലെതന്നെ കുറച്ച് ദൈർഘ്യം ഉണ്ട് കേട്ടോ ഈ കുറിപ്പിനും..🙏
ഏഴിലെ പരീക്ഷ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം വൈകീട്ട് തന്നെ ഞാൻ കരിമത്തെ പബ്ലിക് ലൈബ്രറിയിൽ ഹാജരായി. കർക്കശക്കാരനായ ലൈബ്രറിയൻ തമ്പിച്ചേട്ടൻ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു അവിടെ. പുസ്തകഷെൽഫിലെ ആ ഭാഗത്തേക്കാണ് ചെന്ന പാടെ നോക്കിയത് : ഭാഗ്യം ! കിതാബ് അവിടെത്തന്നെ ഉണ്ട്...
എന്റെ ആവേശത്തോടെയുള്ള നോട്ടം കണ്ടപ്പോൾ തമ്പിച്ചേട്ടന്റെ മുഖത്ത് ഒരു പരുങ്ങൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നോ? 'സ്കൂൾ അടച്ചിട്ട് വാ , തരാം' എന്ന വാക്ക് പാലിക്കുമോ ടിയാൻ എന്നൊരു സംശയം എന്റെ ഉള്ളിൽ മുളപൊട്ടി. ആയിരം പേജുള്ള പുസ്തകം ആണ്. അതൊരു പയ്യന്റെ കയ്യിൽ കൊടുത്താൽ തിരികെ കിട്ടുമോ എന്നൊരു ആശങ്ക ആയിരിക്കാം തമ്പിച്ചേട്ടന്റെ ഉള്ളിൽ..
എന്തായാലും പുള്ളി കിതാബ് തന്നു വിട്ടു. സൈക്കിളിന്റെ ബേക്ക് കാരിയറിൽ ഭദ്രമായി അത് വെച്ച് ഒറ്റവിടലായിരുന്നു വീട്ടിലേക്ക്...
പിന്നെ ഒരു വായനയായിരുന്നു. അക്ഷരാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഊണും ഉറക്കവും ഇല്ലാതെ വായിച്ചു. അമ്മയുടെ വഴക്കും അടിയും കുറേ കൊണ്ടു , വിട്ടുകൊടുത്തില്ല ! തീർക്കും എന്ന വാശിയോടെ വായിച്ചു..
'എരുമത്ര മഠം ആർക്കോ താമസിക്കാൻ കൊടുക്കുന്നു. വാർത്ത കേട്ട പാതി കേൾക്കാത്ത പാതി കോടാന്ത്ര മൂത്താശാൻ അങ്ങോട്ടോടി " എന്ന ആദ്യ വരികൾ മുതൽ "ഭൂഗർഭത്തിൽ നിന്നെന്ന പോലെ ഒരു ചോദ്യമുയർന്നു : 'ഈ കാണായ മനുഷ്യനെല്ലാം തിന്നണ്ടേ?' പരുത്തിക്കാട്ട് കൊച്ചൗതയാണ് അത് ചോദിച്ചത്." വരെ ആയിരത്തോളം പേജുകൾ..!
15 ദിവസം കൂടുമ്പോൾ പുസ്തകകാർഡ് കൊണ്ടു പോയി പുതുക്കിയില്ലെങ്കിൽ ദിവസമൊന്നിന് 10 പൈസ എന്ന കണക്കിന് ഫൈൻ ഉണ്ട്. അത് കൊണ്ട് കാർഡുമായി നിർദിഷ്ട ദിവസം തന്നെ തമ്പിച്ചേട്ടന്റെ തിരുമുന്നിൽ ഹാജരായി. കാർഡ് മേശപ്പുറത്ത് വെച്ചു . 'എവിടെടാ പുസ്തകം' എന്ന മട്ടിൽ പുള്ളിയെന്നെ തറപ്പിച്ചു നോക്കി . 'ഇവനെങ്ങാനും പുസ്തകം കളഞ്ഞോ' എന്നൊരാന്തൽ ആ നോട്ടത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. 'പുതുക്കണം' എന്നുമാത്രേ ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞുള്ളു. പുള്ളി അത്ഭുതം കൂറുന്ന മുഖത്തോടെ എന്നോട് ' എത്ര പേജായി 'എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചതിന് മറുപടിയായി 700 എന്ന് ഞാൻ ..
തമ്പിച്ചേട്ടന്റെ അത്ഭുതത്തിന് കാരണമുണ്ട് : ആ കിതാബ് എടുത്തുകൊണ്ടു പോയി പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ആളുകൾ തുലോം തുച്ഛമായിരുന്നു അന്നേക്ക്. മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാവരും ഒരാഴ്ച്ച കൊണ്ട് കട്ടേംപടോം മടക്കി തിരികെ കൊണ്ടുകൊടുക്കും. പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെയും അതിന്റെ പ്രമേയത്തിന്റെയും വലുപ്പം തന്നെയാണ് കാരണം..
പിന്നേം കുട്ടനാടിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസവായന തുടർന്നു. അടുത്ത പുതുക്കിന് 5 ദിവസം മുമ്പ് , അതായത് 25 ദിവസം കൊണ്ട് #കയർ തീർന്നു ..
അത്രയും തീവ്രമായി , ഉത്കടമായി മുമ്പൊരു പുസ്തകവും വായിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല , ശേഷവും..
അത് ആദ്യവായനയായിരുന്നു എന്നതാണ് എന്നെ ആഴത്തിൽ സ്പർശിച്ച ആ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ വായനയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഈ ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പിൽ എടുത്തുപറയാനുള്ളത്..!

പിന്നെയും കുറെ വർഷങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞ് ' കയർ' വേറൊരു രൂപത്തിൽ മുമ്പിലെത്തി , 2020 ൽ . ഇത്തവണ #Kindle ആയിരുന്നു മാധ്യമം. ലോക് ടൗണിന്റെ മനസ്സടഞ്ഞ ദിനങ്ങളിൽ ആ ബൃഹദാഖ്യായിക രണ്ടനുഭവങ്ങൾ ഉള്ളിൽ നിറച്ചു : ഈ വായനയുടെ അനുഭൂതിയും പഴയ കൗമാരകാലവായനയുടെ ഇനിയും മങ്ങാത്ത ഓർമ്മകളും..

ഏഴാം ക്ലാസിലെ ആ പന്ത്രണ്ടുകാരന് അന്ന് ആ പുസ്തകം പകർന്ന അനുഭൂതിയും നാൽപ്പത്തിയേഴുകാരന് പുതിയ വായന/കേൾവി പകർന്ന അനുഭൂതികളും തമ്മിൽ തട്ടിച്ചു നോക്കിയിട്ടില്ല ഇത് വരെ , കാരണം അവയൊരൊന്നും താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യാനാകാത്ത അനന്യാന��ഭവങ്ങൾ ആയിരുന്നു..!!❤️

അങ്ങനെ കയർ കേട്ടു കഴിഞ്ഞു. സ്റ്റോറി ടെൽ എന്ന ആപ്പ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് ശബ്ദപുസ്തകം കേട്ടത്. നല്ല വായന!
ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ കഥയാണ് കയർ. പത്തൊമ്പതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ അവസാനം മുതൽ ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ മുക്കാലും വരെ നീണ്ടു കിടക്കുന്ന മനുഷ്യ ബന്ധങ്ങളുടെ അസംഖ്യം ഇഴകൾ ചേർന്ന ഒരു വമ്പൻ കയർ! ഇതിൽ ജന്മികൾ ഉണ്ട്; കുടിയാന്മാരുണ്ട്; കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റുകളും കോൺഗ്രസ്സുകാരും ഉണ്ട്. പിന്നെ ഇതിലൊന്നും പെടാത്ത മനുഷ്യരും ഒരു പിടിയുണ്ട്.
ഒരു നാടിന്റെ ജീവചരിത്രം എഴുതുമ്പോൾ അവിടെ ജീവിച്ചു മണ്ണടിഞ്ഞു പോയ മനുഷ്യരെ മാത്രം പറയാതെ അവിടത്തെ ഭൂമിയുടെ കൂടി ചരിത്രം രേഘപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന കൃതിയാണ് കയർ. ഞാറ്റുവാ നാനൂറും, മംഗലശ്ശേരി കരിയും കോടാന്തര കുറുപ്പാശാനും, ചെന്നാടനും പോലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ആയി മാറുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ നോക്കിയാൽ മണ്ണിന്റെ കഥയാണ്, ഭൂമിയുടെ കഥയാണ് കയർ.
ഭാരത ചരിത്രത്തിൽ വമ്പിച്ച പല മാറ്റങ്ങളും നടന്ന പ്രക്ഷുബ്ധമായ ഒരു കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ വാഗ്മായ ചിത്രം അക്കാലത്തെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ സാമൂഹിക മാറ്റങ്ങളിലൂടെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു തകഴി. രാജ ഭക്തിയും, തീണ്ടലും നില നിന്നിരുന്ന കാലത്തിൽ നിന്നും ജനാധിപത്യത്തിലേക്കും അയിത്തോച്ചാടനത്തിലേക്കും ഉള്ള മാറ്റം വായനക്കാരന് അനുഭവവേദ്യമാക്കുന്നതിൽ തകഴി വിജയിക്കുന്നു.
എന്നാൽ ഇതുമാത്രമാണോ വിത്യാസം? മനുഷ്യന് തിന്നാൻ ആയി കൃഷി നടത്തിയിരുന്ന കാലത്തിൽ നിന്നും കച്ചവടം ചെയ്യാനായി കൃഷി ചെയ്യുന്ന കാലത്തിലേക്കുള്ള മാറ്റം പഴമക്കാർക്ക് തെല്ലു വ്യസനത്തോടെ മാത്രമേ കണ്ടു നിൽക്കാൻ സാധിക്കുന്നുള്ളൂ. പണ്ടൊരു നിലവിളക്കും കത്തിച്ചു വെച്ചു ഒരു വാഴ ഇലയിൽ പൂവും ഇട്ടു നടത്തിയ സ്ഥല കൈമാറ്റങ്ങൾ ഓലയിലേക്കും പിന്നെ കടലാസിലേക്കും മാറിയപ്പോൾ ഇല്ലാതായത് നേറിവല്ലേ? തകഴി നമ്മോട് ചോദിക്കുകയാണ്. ഇപ്പോൾ തലമുറയ്ക്ക് കൃഷി സ്ഥലം പാഴ് നിലമാക്കി ഇടാൻ വിഷമമില്ല. അതിലും വലിയ പാതകം അന്നാട്ടിലെ പഴമക്കാർ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. അന്നാട്ടിലെ മാത്രമല്ല, കേരളത്തിന്റെ തന്നെ കാർഷിക സംസ്കാരം കൈമോശം വരുന്നതിൽ പരിതപിക്കുകയാണ്! ഭൂമിയെ സ്നേഹിച്ചവരെ കാണാൻ എത്ര നൂറ്റാണ്ട് പിന്നിലേക്ക് പോകണം എന്നു ചോദിക്കുന്നു തകഴി!
ഇതൊക്കെയാണെങ്കിലും ഒരു പറ്റം മനുഷ്യരാണ് കയറിന്റെ കരുത്ത്. ഓരോ കാലഘട്ടവും മനുഷ്യരുടെ ചിന്താ ധാരയിൽ വരുത്തുന്ന വ്യതിയാനങ്ങള് അവരുടെ ചിന്തകളായും, പ്രവൃത്തികളായും വരച്ചിടുകയാണ്. പരസ്പരം കേട്ടു പിണഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുന്ന ഈ മനുഷ്യരാണ് കയറിനെ ശക്തിയുള്ളതാക്കുന്നത്.
ഒരുപക്ഷേ ഇതുപോലെ ഒരു കൃതി ഇനി ഉണ്ടാകില്ല. ഇക്കാലത്തെ മനുഷ്യർ ഓട്ടത്തിലാണ്. ഇതിനിടെ ഒന്നു നിൽക്കാനും, ചുറ്റും നോക്കാനും എവിടെ സമയം? നിഷ്കളങ്കമായ സ്നേഹം നഷ്ടമായി കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. എല്ലാം മത്സരമാണ്. അതാണ് ഇക്കാലത്തിന്റെ മുഖമുദ്ര. ഒരുപക്ഷേ ഒരു ദശാബ്ദം കൂടി കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഈ പുസ്തകവും ശീലാന്തിപ്പിള്ളിയിലെ താളിയോലകൾ പോലെ ചിതലരിച്ച് അവസാനം കാലത്തിന്റെ തീച്ചൂളയിൽ ജ്വലിച്ചു ഇല്ലാതായേക്കാം. ആർക്ക് ചേതം? അല്ലേ?

ഒരുപക്ഷേ ഇതുപോലെ ഒരു കൃതി ഇനി ഉണ്ടാകില്ല. ഇക്കാലത്തെ മനുഷ്യർ ഓട്ടത്തിലാണ്. ഇതിനിടെ ഒന്നു നിൽക്കാനും, ചുറ്റും നോക്കാനും എവിടെ സമയം? നിഷ്കളങ്കമായ സ്നേഹം നഷ്ടമായി കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. എല്ലാം മത്സരമാണ്. അതാണ് ഇക്കാലത്തിന്റെ മുഖമുദ്ര. ഒരുപക്ഷേ ഒരു ദശാബ്ദം കൂടി കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഈ പുസ്തകവും ശീലാന്തിപ്പിള്ളിയിലെ താളിയോലകൾ പോലെ ചിതലരിച്ച് അവസാനം കാലത്തിന്റെ തീച്ചൂളയിൽ ജ്വലിച്ചു ഇല്ലാതായേക്കാം. ആർക്ക് ചേതം? അല്ലേ?

I started listening to this book in December 2024, and was finally able to finish the book yesterday. The Storytel version of the book is what I'd call a dramatic reading. My 72-year-old uncle in Kerala said it reminded him of the radio dramas or skits they listened to as children.
I don't know if there's anything I can say about this book that would be original or new. But for me what was iconic about Kayar was the number of times it made me fall in love with my mother tongue. At least once every 4-5 chapters I would sit back to think how lucky I am that I can follow and understand this beautiful language. And I also felt like this book was the inspiration for umpteen number of sub-plots eventually made into popular movies in Malayalam too.
If you think about the story on the whole, there's no one protagonist, except perhaps the Kuttanadan region itself. There are stories of homes within the region and their lived experiences of living through the British Raj, the independence movement, social reforms, the end of matrilineal inheritance, the land tribunal act and so on. One common thread is of course land and property - how land and its identity has evolved as Kerala, or rather this specific region evolved. It's also fitting that 'Kayar' literally means coir rope, and it feels like land is what's tying them all together. But there are different strands to this rope and each strand is separated, assessed and intertwined with other strands throughout the book -- be it the economy, the social fabric, caste, language, women's place in society and so on.
Lastly, to me, possible the only gripe is the way women have often been portrayed in the book. There's an obsession to portray her as a thing of desire in many contexts. And although there are many women who eventually hold their own based on their personalities and smarts, the first description of almost every woman is deeply sexualised. But I guess it's also a product of its times, and if there is a woman's version of her lived experience in Kerala from the 1850s onwards, I'll probably listen to that next.
Nevertheless, I can't recommend this book enough. My understanding of my motherland has changed and I'm so grateful for this book.

One of the most outstanding novels in Malayalam and best of Thakazhi. Also this could be one of the novels written after so much research for accurate portrayal of the times it represent. The story line starts around mid 19th century and spans into 1970s covering around 150 years and gives us a clear picture how life changed over this period and how people changed in their approach towards land/farming/family/money.
The novel starts with a period when Travancore king sends his employee to give land to people and force them to do farming and pay taxes and ends around the time period the governments takes back the land from people forcefully and in way the loss of culture of agriculture in the following years. We can see how an earnest politician from Communist party becomes rich men over the years which was so shocking so many years ago, but which has become a norm these days. In a way Thakazhi managed to portray the corruption inside even a idealist communist once he has access to money and the luxuries it brings.
If Thakazhi was alive today, he would have added a fourth part to the novel in which he can go in detail how the corruption become so widespread even among idealist leaders and how land has become just another investment tool for making money with no care for the land which gives us food.
I think this novel should be a must read for anyone interested in Malayalam literature.

വയലാർ അവാർഡും ജ്ഞാനപീഠ പുരസ്കാരവും നേടിയ കൃതി. കുട്ടനാടൻ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ ഒരുപാട് പേരുടെ ജീവിതകഥകൾ പറഞ്ഞുപോകുന്ന നോവൽ. കാലത്തിന്റെ മാറ്റവും ഒഴുക്കും ഇതിൽ നന്നായി അറിയാൻ കഴിയും. നാലു തലമുറകളുടെ ജീവിതം ഈ നോവലിൽ ഇഴപിരിഞ്ഞു നില്ക്കുന്നു. മനുഷ്യനും ഭൂമിയും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധമാണ് 'കയറി'ലെ മുഖ്യപ്രമേയം. കൂട്ടുകുടുംബവും മരുമക്കത്തായവും മാപ്പിളലഹളയും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യസമരവും ലോകമഹായുദ്ധവും പ്രജാഭരണവും പുന്നപ്രവയലാറും ഇതിൽ ശക്തിയുടെ തൂലിക ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു നാടിന്റെ ജീവചരിത്രം എഴുതുമ്പോൾ അവിടെ ജീവിച്ചു മണ്ണടിഞ്ഞു പോയ മനുഷ്യരെ മാത്രം പറയാതെ അവിടത്തെ ഭൂമിയുടെ കൂടി ചരിത്രം രേഘപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന കൃതിയാണ് കയർ. ഞാറ്റുവാ നാനൂറും, മംഗലശ്ശേരി കരിയും കോടാന്തര കുറുപ്പാശാനും, ചെന്നാടനും പോലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായി മാറുന്നു. വളരെ വലിയൊരു നോവലാണിത്.

A Masterpiece, a colossal work of immense significance and a must-read for anyone interested in Kerala social and political history. The novel depicts the changing relationship between man and the soil, and in doing so the author explores every possible human emotions and aspiration. The novel doesn't have any continuous character. Some autobiographical sketch can also be seen in character, Manikandan even though it is extremely limited.

It took me a full five months to finish this incredible book by Thakazhi. It's my first by him, and I'm still amazed I chose such a lengthy read as a starting point. Now I'm eager to explore more of his work.
