James Baldwin (1841-1925) was an American editor and author. Largely self-educated, he began teaching at the age of 24. In addition to editing school books, he started writing books of his own. After the publication in 1882 of The Story of Siegfried, he went on to write more than 50 others. At one time it was estimated that of all the school books in use in the United States, over half had been written or edited by him. He is best remembered for the books of introductory historical sketches he wrote for younger students and his retellings of the legends of heroes for older students. Other works include: The Story of Roland (1883), A Story of the Golden Age (1887), Old Greek Stories (1895), Fifty Famous Stories Retold (1896), Four Great Americans (1897), Hero Tales (1904), Fifty Famous People (1912) and In My Youth (1914).

A great adaptation for children of the Daniel DeFoe classic. It is part of Calvert School's 4th grade curriculum and was quite enjoyable for my children and myself. Will be reading this to my youngest as soon as we finish our current read-aloud.

I read this story with my 4th grader for school (we Virtual School). We liked it, this adaptation was pretty easy to understand. There were some parts we had to read a few times to get. But all in all it was a pretty good book :-)

This was a fun little adaptation. I wouldn't suggest reading it in place of the original, however, as several significant events (including the rescue of Friday's father and the Spaniard) are cut out.

Nice way to work on my Spanish. Much easier to follow along when it’s sentence by sentence instead of page by page like some other bilingual books.

My 4th grader and I read this together for homeschool literature. He's such a picky reader, and I don't recall ever reading this story myself, so it was a bit of a chance. Well worth it though, he loved it! Adventure, a wide range of feeling (lonely, brave, prepated, scared, etc), and all very easily laid out in this children's version. We also listened to the audio version for a break at reading out loud to each other. I'd encourage anyone grades 3-5 to try it. It's a long story, but broken into short chapters, and NEVER DULL!

This is the only version of Robinson Crusoe that I have read and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it! I think what makes it fun is Robinson isn't panicked nor does he go crazy because of living on the island for 25+ years alone, like I would. He builds himself a "castle" and a "summer home," has a little farm and garden, and is quite happy. No one else arrives on the island for the first 25 years and when they do, that's an interesting part of the story too.

It's a very good summary of the book. I think that the author put in a bit of his own interpretation when writing it. It seemed to me that sometimes he even tried to make excuses for the author being a product of his environment. Anyway, I read this book because my 5th grade students are reading it.
