Beautiful Maids All in a Row

Rate this book
In this white-knuckle thriller for fans of Lisa Gardner and Karin Slaughter, a brilliant, troubled forensic psychologist finds herself matching wits with a frighteningly talented sociopath.

Dr. Iris Ballard’s glory days are behind her, so when Luke Hudson, her former FBI partner and onetime lover, asks for help constructing a psychological profile of an elusive serial killer who murders single mothers and dumps their bodies in the woods, Iris turns him away. She just wants to be left alone with her infomercials, her German Shepherd, and her vodka. That is, until she gets a peek at the case files.

The media has dubbed him “the Woodsman.” But after Iris learns the sickening details held back from the press, and as she sets foot onto the scene of his latest crime, she assembles a portrait of a more complicated, enigmatic, meticulous man. Control is his motivation. He thrives on it. Soon he even tries to manipulate the investigation by contacting Iris, hoping to rattle the woman he considers an intellectual equal.

The game is on. Iris thinks she has a read on her target, enough to push his buttons, to make him lose control. But when the Woodsman gains the upper hand, Iris faces the most painful reckoning of all—with her own violent past.

I really, really need this. So, thank you, Jennifer Harlow, for dragging me out of my reading slump. Not only did this book own me for the last few days, but I find myself desperate for more. More Iris and Luke and more of Ms. Harlow’s snarky and smart writing.

It was Iris that drew me in. A former serial killer profiler for the FBI, she’s completely lost it. No shocker there really. This genre is riddled with detectives drowning their sorrows in (insert drink of choice --> here); vodka, in this instance. I know I've said this before, but just once I want a detective that has their sh*t together. Just once. Anyway, back to Iris. There was something about her pain and loss that hit me on a deeper level. There’s no doubt in my mind, I would probably be popping pills and chugging vodka if I had to face down the reality she has for the last two years—I think any wife might. It’s Luke, her former partner, and the lure of outsmarting a sadistic bastard that gets her head back in the game.

It was Luke that stole my heart. At first I wasn’t sure how I felt about his history with Iris. Once I truly understood their connection—the depth of his feelings and everything he's done for her—I was completely smitten. Obsessed. Excited. Yearning for more of their story.

“He was wrong, you know.”

It was the killer that kept me on my toes. It has to be said that this book is deliciously gory and dark. It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted or anyone forcing back bile at the description of a mutilated body or slabs of meat, as the author likes to refer to them. What can I say, I like my suspense with a healthy side of gore. I found this story to be unique—the killer is revealed pretty early on—lending a different perspective to the entire scenario. This isn't about Iris pinpointing the killer, but watching to see who would outsmart who—detective or psycho? Believe me when I say, the killer's arrogance and depravity is put on full display.

My one and only, teeny tiny, wish would have been for an epilogue. I wanted a glimpse of what the future holds for Iris . . . and Luke, of course. My fingers are crossed so tightly for a second book, they might bust. Just saying, this was a pretty exceptional read.

*A huge THANK YOU to Random House and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Beautiful Maids All in a Row by Jennifer Harlow is a 2016 Alibi publication.

Gritty and Intense-

Iris Ballard is a shell of the woman she once was. She’s left the FBI after watching her husband get murdered right in front of her and after sustaining serious injuries of her own.

Yet, when a string of murders indicates a new serial killer, already being dubbed ‘The Woodsman’ is on the loose, Iris’s old partner and best friend, Luke, tries to lure her out of her alcoholic haze to help catch the killer. This is an opportunity for Iris to finally get back to work and perhaps saving someone’s life by catching this monster, will soothe some of her guilt.

But, it's not easy climbing back into the saddle. Iris suffers from severe panic attacks and debilitating nightmares. However, she manages to rise to the occasion, hoping to prevent more deaths, but also hoping for a little redemption.

Although she must face and fight off her personal demons, her profiling skills aren't rusty in the least.

Regardless, when she is certain she’s found the right guy, she has a hard time selling everyone else on the idea. In the meantime, more lives could be lost, maybe even Iris’s.

This is my kind of thriller! Dark, atmospheric, with well drawn characters, and high octane suspense. I read this book in one sitting, it was that riveting. I really liked Iris and Luke and think they make a very good team, both professionally and personally. I hope they will return for more action, in the near future.

This series is off to a fantastic start! I can’t wait to read the next installment!

Beautiful Maids All in a Row is the first book in a promising new series.

Two years have passed since former FBI profiler Iris Ballard witnessed her husband’s brutal murder. Feeling responsible for his death, Iris is barely scraping by teaching at the local college, existing on a diet of vodka and candy bars. When her former partner, and one time lover, Luke reaches out asking for Iris’s help, Iris accepts the chance to consult on the Woodsman serial killer case. Not only is this case a chance for Iris to make some money, it also gives her the opportunity to redeem herself. Iris eventually gets caught up in a game of cat and mouse with the Woodsman, putting her life at stake.

Beautiful Maids All in a Row is a solid read. For the most part, it is fast-paced and full of action. I really got sucked in once Iris began going toe-to-toe with the Woodsman. I will definitely be on the lookout for the Next book in this series.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN!

Jennifer Harlow has written a serial killer that scared me to death with his control over himself and others, had me cheering for her main character, Iris Ballard’s strength and tenacity, crying for her loss and wishing that I had the next book in my hands right now. BEAUTIFUL MAIDS ALL IN A ROW is a definite keeper!

Dr. Iris Ballard was one of the top FBI profilers. She now teaches at a small college and uses an excessive amount of pills and vodka to hide from mistakes made two years ago. Right when she reaches a new low, Luke Hudson, her old partner shows up and offers her a chance to chase a new monster, “The Woodsman.”

“The Woodsman” has killed several professional women and never leaves a clue or trace to be followed. Control is his motivation. He makes contact with Iris in the hope of rattling her, but he also considers her his intellectual equal. Even when his identity becomes known, he is able to deflect his crimes on to others. All except Iris believe it is over. He has made everyone believe Iris is on the verge of a breakdown again. The game is on and Iris’ life could be on the line again.

This book was fast paced, chilling and one of the best psychological thrillers I have read this year. The characters could walk right off the page. “The Woodsman” made chills go up and down my spine. I am hoping Ms. Harlow continues with this series and soon!

Thanks so very much to Alibi-Random House Publishing Group and Net Galley for allowing me to read this eARC in exchange for an honest review. It was definitely my pleasure!

Solid plot, great writing style, well-paced, and nicely infused with humor! Loved the heroine's snarky path with words and the way the Woodsman verbally taunted her. There were some tidbits in the story that were noticeably glossed over but this was still a fun thriller! En-joyed!

I had to think on this one for a little bit. First off, I have to say thank you to Melissa for the excellent review that she wrote on this novel.. which clearly pushed me to read this one ;).

Harlow grabbed me in this novel by the one and only Iris. Man, is she a badass! I love the strong female detectives. Iris is witty, sassy, and one strong woman. The novel starts off developing Iris's character who used to be a profiler for the FBI until she was attacked and her husband was murdered. Iris's former partner Luke Hudson helps bring Iris back to life in the FBI trying to catch a serial killer called the Woodsman.

This novel definitely isn't for those that are squirmy with graphics regarding sexual assault, murder, etc. Harlow did an excellent job portraying the mind of this sadistic serial killer... I was pretty creeped out in certain parts. I had to put my kindle aside at night haha while finishing this one due to seeing inside the mind of the Woodsman.

But, my only tiny ehhh that I had with his book is it's the same storyline. Serial killer goes after main detective (Iris in this case) and OF course is saved by her partner Luke at the end. I'm not sure if all series have this same storyline, but I can't seem to find any series that are unique and end differently? But, then duh this wouldn't be a series if the main detective was killed?.. Right? lol.

With that being said, I did really enjoy this and give this a solid 4. I will be checking out the next novel in this series.. :).

And OF course I am anxious to see what comes next for Luke and Iris ;).

Beyond Fabulous!
This novel is the perfect example why psychological thrillers are one of my favourite genres. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Dr. Iris Ballard is a brilliant, but damaged ex-FBI profiler with a degree in forensic psychology. She is on the path of self destruction until the FBI need her expertise to help profile "the Woodsman". He is a sadistic, evil killer and Iris must overcome the past that haunts her in order to take on the case.
A masterful plot, vivid descriptions and exceptional characters make this novel unputdownable!
"Beautiful Maids All In A Row" is Jennifer Harlow's first book, written when she was 19. What a talent!
I look forward to reading the next book in the "Iris Ballard" series.

Thank you to Random House and NetGalley for an arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Iris Ballard was a former FBI profiler when she was on a former case tracking down a monster that killed her husband & wounded her quite badly, now she is a addicted to Vodka & excess amounts of pills you name it she is on it. She is so depressed about her husbands killing she sees nothing but helplessness, until she hears the voice of her former partner Luke Hudson at first she doesn't believe its him but when she sees him for real she is taken aback as they had a fling in the early days.

Luke tries to talk her into a case he is on THE WOODSMAN!! who is a horrible monster who kills single mothers, drugging them, torturing, raping the kidnapping them without anyone seeing him, Iris is feeling so much pain over her husband Hayden that she cant even think of anything until Luke finally gets sick of her self pity & tells her to do what she does best & that is finding the woodsman.

She thinks about it then decides to track this monster down. reads Hudson's victim report tells them he is smart abducts the woman in a public place & manages not to get caught, he attacks from behind he drugs them then wakes up disorientated ties them up before they wake so they cannot fight back, the only thing that Iris cannot work out is WHY CUT THE LEFT SIDE OF THEIR HEART?

Things really pick up when THE WOODSMAN RINGS BALLARD the mind games start & the games begin between the two I loved the banter & the woodsman was getting inside Ballard's head. I wont go into any more detail as I want readers to enjoy this novel as much as I did .

MY THOUGHTS
This was a really well written crime thriller that for once had a kick arse heroine that had balls & wasn't afraid of getting her man. I loved Luke Hudson he was strong & a loyal friend/ lover to iris which I hope will continue into the next book which I have on wish list. I loved the grittiness of the plot I felt panic when The Woodsman was in the dialogue made my skin crawl, all in all an enjoyable read 4.5 stars.

Iris Ballard, ex-FBI profiler and now Forensic Psychologist, has hit bottom. Being almost fatally stabbed and watching her husband being murdered has led to panic attacks that she treats with alcohol. She's living a very quiet life these days.

Luke Hudson, her former FBI partner and one-time lover, appears on her doorstep asking for help in putting together a psychological profile of the serial killer known as the Woodsman. He tortures, rapes, stabs, strangles and then removes part of their hearts before dumping their bodies in the woods, in the water.

She doesn't want anything to do with profiling a serial killer, even though she used to be the best at hunting the human monsters. Taking a look at the case files, she elects to help, even though she's not sure she can do it anymore.

Iris and Luke think she's got the killer in her crosshairs, but this is not your 'normal' serial killer. She knows who he is but he has everyone fooled even Luke her ex FBI partner. Now she must protect all she holds dear until he comes for her or those she holds loves.

This was the author's first book she ever wrote ... at just age nineteen. I was really intrigued when I saw this author compared to the likes of Karin Slaughter, I was a bit doubtful. Ms. Harlow has made a believer out of me.

The book is extremely well-written. The plot line is tight, well constructed. The characters are terrific. Iris is so flawed .... feeling of guilt have driven her down the vodka road. She wasn't able to protect her husband, and she had had a fling with Luke. She's angry all the time. She just wants to be left alone. Luke has his own problems. He's had feelings for Iris for a very long time, and except for one night, would never poach on someone belonging to another man.

I love their interaction, even when they're spouting hate words at each other. Deep down they each know that the other will always have their back.

Many thanks to the author / Random House Publishing Group - Alibi / NetGalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Two years ago, Dr. Iris Ballard left her job with the FBI after she was attacked and her husband killed. Since then she has been leading a quiet existence surviving on candy bars, alcohol, and pills. That all changes when her former FBI partner, Luke, persuades her to profile a serial killer, dubbed 'the Woodsman'. His identity is revealed about halfway through the book, but that didn't distract from the exciting and suspenseful plot at all. A successful manipulator who loves to be in control, the Woodsman has everybody but Iris fooled and revels in pitting himself against Iris whom he regards as a worthwhile adversary.
I really enjoyed this fast-paced thriller. While Iris is certainly not a unique character in this genre, I have to say I really liked her. The mix of vulnerability and kick-ass stubbornness and strength was really appealing, and I loved her wit. Her inner thoughts and some of her interactions with Luke and others were really funny and a good counterweight to some of the dark and gory details of the serial killer's depravity. The relationship between Iris and Luke was fun to follow, but I liked that the romance angle remained fairly in the background and the focus was more firmly on hunting and outwitting an evil psychopath.
I was pretty surprised to learn this was actually the first book written by Jennifer Harlow when she was just 19. It was well written, cleverly plotted, and the characters just drew you in. I would love to read more about Iris and Luke and hope there will be a follow-up. I would definitely recommend this to any fans of psychological thrillers.

Ex FBI Agent Dr Iris Ballard watched her husband being murdered and was almost fatally stabbed herself. Now Iris lives alone, she has a drinking problem and suffers from anxiety and panic attacks. She tries to keep this private but unfortunately there has been a couple of instances where she has experienced this in public and she worries what people think of her. She is living a quiet life when her ex partner Luke asks for help profiling a serial killer. Iris is shocked to see Luke, they have a past together and she is not sure she wants to see him again but the case he is investigating starts to get under her skin and she wants to be involved to find the killer known as the "Woodsman". The Woodsman thrives on control, is very manipulative and is also a sociopath. At approximately half way through the book we find out who the killer is, this does not detract at all from the story as it is interesting to see what is going on in the head of the Woodsman. I really enjoyed this book and to know that the author was only nineteen when she wrote this is quite truly remarkable, I will now be looking for more books by Jennifer Harlow. Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Dr. Iris Ballard thought her days of chasing serial killers with the FBI were long over after she herself was injured and her husband murdered. Iris has spent the time since buried in a bottle and popping prescription pain killers to hide from the worst time of her life.

When Iris's former partner, Luke Hudson, show up and asks for Iris to help solve the case of a serial killer on the loose targeting women she finds herself brought back into the world of the FBI. The media has dubbed the killer the Woodsman but Iris comes up with a scarily accurate profile of the killer. When she begins to receive phone calls from the killer a game of cat and mouse begins to prove his guilt.

Beautiful Maids All in a Row is possibly one of those reads that I went into with my expectations a tad too high after seeing a lot of wonderful reviews. For me I found this one seemed to have flaws that others had overlooked and I just didn't get that wow factor that I was expecting.

First, I'm not sure why the author chose to have the main character basically portrayed as an addict at the start of the story only to have her to a complete about face and become a sober kick butt agent in the blink of an eye. This really lost any touch with reality because no one could be burying their troubles in booze and pills and not suffer some withdrawals. I would have been more convinced if she'd been hiding a flask while on the job or something to make that part a tad more realistic.

Then, as for the story it seemed to be the investigation was over fairly quickly and it became more of a lack of evidence dance between characters. This to me wasn't quite as compelling for some reason, I just kept thinking arrest him or shoot him or something. I understand evidence being needed for trials but there were some details in there that I questioned why it wasn't enough and the story was continuing.

Overall, not a bad story but I didn't completely fall in love with this one either. A few flaws in my eyes made this one just an OK read but the writing good enough I would possibly pick up others from this author in the future.

I’ve always been drawn to crime drama/mysteries, piecing together the evidence, outsmarting a killer, finding out what makes them tick. But what made this story were Iris, a troubled ex-FBI profiler and her past partner, Luke who still works for the Bureau. Their history and relationship was just as interesting as catching the killer to me. The two reunite to track down The Woodsman, a sicko who abducts, rapes, and tortures his female victims until he finishes them off by strangulation. It was ugly and brutal! There is a fight against the clock to find and stop this murderer before he abducts his next victim, and I felt Iris and Luke’s urgency and desperation as they hunt him. Iris’ involvement in the case catches the attention of this horrible man, and I was very worried for her safety!

At first Iris is a self-destructive mess , something that frustrates me to no end, even if she did have plenty of good reasons to be a mess, I just find it hard to witness that kind of behavior. Thankfully, investigating The Woodsman snapped her right out of that. Being with Luke again, even though they pushed each other’s buttons a lot, seemed to help her get back into the land of the living, too. I was fascinated by Iris’ ability to nail down so many things about the killer just by examining the evidence. Some of her instincts seemed uncanny, which is why she’s pulled into this world all over again.

Luke and Iris must sort through their feelings for each other, in the midst of this pressure cooker! Even though they’ve been apart for a couple of years, being together again makes it seem like they never parted. They spent so many hours together as partners in the past, knew each better than anyone else, and now they contend with the old feelings that led to a night of passion neither can forget. Lust and attraction spark between these two and I just wanted more ! I was pleased with how it ended, but I’m eager for the next installment to see how it all works out!

Beautiful Maids All in a Row was an exciting thriller guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails, and hoping this monster is caught or *better yet* dead by the end of this roller coaster ride! I can’t wait for the next book!

This is the type of book I crave. From page one my imagination was engaged. Iris Ballard is a no nonsense woman that believes she has nothing to live for until an unresistable case is brought to her attention by her old partner Luke in the FBI. The Woodsman is killing women and Iris is willing to get herself together to help catch him.
I love Iris! I can't wait until the next adventure I get to come along on.

Wow! My heart is still thumping!

It had been two years since Dr Iris Ballard was attacked and almost died – where she also lost her beloved husband and left her profiler job with the FBI. But the arrival in her life once again of former partner FBI Special Agent Luke Hudson and his request to help with a particularly gruesome case where a serial killer was murdering single women with young children and dumping their ravaged bodies in the woods had her shuddering. She couldn’t do it again…

After Luke had gone, Iris reluctantly decided to read the files he’d left on the killer the media had called “the Woodsman”. What she read horrified her and once again the pull to help remove a twisted, psychotic killer from the streets had her in its grips. Little did she know the impact that decision would have on her life – but as Iris detailed the profile, she knew this killer was clever, paid much attention to detail and never made mistakes. And she also suspected much more about him than that. But did she know who he was? The unexpected and taunting telephone call though meant he knew who she was…

Wow! Chilling, haunting and gripping, Beautiful Maids all in a Row by Jennifer Harlow had me from the very first page! My heart was thumping; I wanted to stop for a breather but I had to keep going! What an amazing psychological thriller! This book was written by the author when she was nineteen; she didn’t expect it to see the light of day and went on to write many more (but this is my first by her) I am very grateful she decided to publish Beautiful Maids all in a Row and as it’s the first in the Dr Iris Ballard series, I’m happy to say I’ll be reading more! Definitely very highly recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and Alibi Publishing for this copy to read in exchange for my honest review.

Dr. Iris Ballard’s life is pretty sad. Her teaching career has tanked, her drinking is out of control and her bank account is non-existent when her ex-FBI partner shows up and asks for her assistance in catching a serial killer known as the “Woodsman”. She just wants to drown her sorrows in her vodka and candy bars when Luke shows up at her house and with the first glimpse of the case files she is hooked and back in control. Or so she thinks until the serial killer contacts her and now has decided he will taunt her. She knows who he is but he has everyone fooled even Luke her ex FBI partner. Now she must protect all she holds dear until he comes for her or those she holds loves. Great read. I would like to thank the Publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.

I'm so pleased to discover Jennifer Harlow! This is an extremely enjoyable, edge of your seat serial killer thriller. The writing is fantastic. The main character is so biting and hilarious. I didn't expect to laugh reading a book like this but I did. She's a bit of a tragic figure who has gone through a lot of loss and pain but her sarcasm and scathing comments really got me. I love her. I want to be friends with her. I stayed up way too late reading this one but I couldn't put it down.

Dr. Iris Ballard thinks she's done with the FBI. After a serial killer with a vendetta against her kills her husband and seriously injures her, she retreats into herself. Her depression, guilt, and alcohol problem have not made her a very pleasant person to be around. Teaching at the local college probably wasn't the best idea with those issues. When her handsome former partner comes to visit her bearing case files about an extremely brutal killer of women and ask for her help, she isn't thrilled by the proposition. But they need her and maybe she needs them to hopefully bring her back to her strong, confident, sober self.

That was pretty intense. I had to take a star off though because the story, while gripping, was a bit derivative. I feel like I've read this story with different characters and by a different author (or more). Also I'm really over the constant guilt-tripping that some characters do. I find it quite self-indulgent. Having said all that, the book was very readable and suspenseful and quite dark. The baddie was really bad and you just knew that he wouldn't stop unless someone stopped him.

Iris Ballard, forensic psychologist, was an FBI agent until two years ago when she was stabbed nearly to death and her husband shot to death by a killer that she had caught who had escaped custody and was out to 'get' her. She managed to kill the killer but her nerves were shot. Now she is a shadow of her former self, drinks too much and lives in a veritable fortress. She makes a meager living teaching at a local college. Iris is rudely dragged from her apathy when her former FBI partner, Luke, seeks her out for a particular case. The Woodsman has just killed his fourth victim, someone that Iris new. He seeks out women in their thirties with young sons, abducts them and brutally rapes and murders them. It's not easy for Iris to get back into the FBI grind but she manages well and soon has a workable profile. But does she have any credibility? As you can imagine, things get a bit tense when the killer escalates and starts taunting Iris. Will he come after her? This was a classic page turner with no flat spots and I will be reading the sequel.

Wow! This is the way an FBI thriller is supposed to be written.

There are so many things I liked about Beautiful Maids in a Row. The main character Iris Ballard is a mess at the beginning of the story. She was a profiler for the FBI and has helped captured many high profile cases until one monster got too close. Two years ago, she lost her husband and herself. She has not been living. Instead, she spends her time on a job she couldn't care less, popping pills, drinking vodka and smoking cigarettes. She's suffering from guilt, survivor's guilt plus PTSD. She lives away from everyone, with a high-tech alarm system and a German Shepherd for the company. It's not until her ex-partner Luke Hudson comes asking for help with a case that Iris begins to live again.

Luke is in charge of an FBI investigation. A serial killer is on the loose. The victims are all light-eyed, brown hair, single mothers. They are abducted in the open and then their bodies are found in the water in the woods. Luke needs help and he knows no one is better at this than Iris. He also has some personal reasons for wanting Iris back. They had been friends and once they were more than that.

Of course, I can't forget the monster who is raping and murdering these women. He has a voice and it's twisted and depraved. I was at 27% when I realized who it was. To my surprise, it was revealed not too long after, who he was. It made this suspense even more interesting. Iris has to battle with a very intelligent man. Someone who thinks involving her in his game elevates the stakes.

I'm very pleased with the turn of events. I liked Iris from the very beginning. She was damaged but who wouldn't be after what she has gone through? She was smart and cocky at times but she could also feel shame and was immersed in guilt. She was self-destructing slowly until Luke came knocking.

Luke was easy on the eyes but I wasn't sure about him until I got to know him better. Then, I jumped on the Luke bandwagon. There is a point when I almost backtracked in my opinion of him but he proved himself quite deserving of Iris.

I would recommend this book to any suspense lover. It was a thrilling ride!

Cliffhanger: No

Beautiful Maids All in a Row is the first in a series about ex-FBI agent Iris Ballard. After her husband is killed by a serial killer from a previous case, Iris relocates to a small town to teach forensic psychology. There is a new killer coined The Woodsman on the loose and Iris puts aside her reservations to help her former FBI partner and close friend Luke track him down.

Iris is a flawed, but not a fragile character. She loses her temper quickly and it's easy for her to head into an emotional downward spiral. Once she becomes involved in The Woodsman case she slowly pulls herself together to focus on bringing the killer to justice.

The pace moves quickly, there's no real opportunity to stop and think about what will happen next, which is something I really loved about the book. Luke and Iris are well rounded protagonists and it's easy to see how they are motivated and what drives them to solve the case over everything else happening in their lives. I would definitely recommend this title to my friends who enjoy suspense and crime thrillers.

Beautiful Maids All in a Row by new to me author Jennifer Harlow introduces the reader to Iris Ballard, a former FBI profiler who now lives in self-isolation after her husband was murdered by a serial killer she helped arrest and who nearly killed her as well. The reader is also introduced to Iris’s former partner, Luke Hudson, who has contacted Iris to ask her for her assistance with another serial killer, The Woodsman.

This story moves at a pretty brisk pace while still allowing the reader to keep up with the details. I really liked Iris and felt equal parts empathy and admiration for this character and everything she has gone through. Her humanity is displayed very clearly for the reader to get an excellent idea of the anguish Iris has endured and the fallout she still lives with. Honestly, it was quite inspiring that she could get out of bed and form coherent sentences after witnessing her husband’s murder and her near death from the encounter. Iris is certainly not a fragile flower. She has a lot of thorns and isn’t afraid to speak her mind regardless of protocol or politics.

Luke is her mirror opposite. He is a by the book FBI agent. He and Iris have a lot of unresolved issues and she doesn’t react well when he shows up in her life again. I really enjoyed the chemistry he and Iris share and hope this continues into the next books.

This story is tightly woven with a lot of suspense and anticipation. Iris is very talented at her ability to profile her suspect. The villain in this story adds another dimension to the story as well. I found it very interesting that Iris shows no fear in her encounters with him which makes the reader wonder if Iris is deliberately provoking him because she, herself, has a death wish. This behavior by Iris heightens the tension sending the reader to the edge of their seat. At any rate, reckless or not, Iris’s behavior comes across as realistic and believable for the situations she is in.

My Final Verdict: This is the first book in a series and as of the writing of this review, there are only two books published, the last one in November 2017. I am unable to determine if this series will continue beyond the second book but I hope so. This story does a very good job of exploring what living with trauma looks like and how one woman can fight her demons and get past it to stop a maniacal killer. Readers who like their stories tense, where good wins over evil are in for a treat with this story.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Beautiful Maids All in a Row from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Down the East coast, single mothers are being raped, strangled, and half their hearts are taken as trophies. Two years ago criminal psychologist Dr. Iris Ballard would have been hot on his trail, but that was before the serial killer she put away escaped from custody, stabbed her, and gunned down her husband. Now she is retired from the FBI, as close to content as a clinically depressed pill popping alcoholic can be, until her old partner and lover, Special Agent Luke Hudson, comes looking for help. In spite of herself, she builds a profile on “The Woodsman,” who has so far left no evidence or witnesses.

No sooner than she joins the investigating team in D.C. and begins confronting people from her past life, another woman is abducted and killed. Dejected and tired, Iris returns to her hotel for some much needed sleep, only to be awaken by a phone call from The Woodsman, who seems to know an awful lot about her life, both past and present, including her deepest secrets that no one else could possibly know.

Rattled by this conversation, Iris begins looking at the victims’ belongings and tries to find the connection to herself. Still haunted by the traumatic event that ended her career, can she fight off the crippling anxiety and self-doubt brought on by being back on the job without the help of drugs or booze long enough to discover the killer’s identity before he gets to her first?

At turns vulnerable and fierce, Iris is an acerbic yet emotionally wounded heroine, who, despite struggles with drug and alcohol addictions, strives to find redemption from her tragic past. Jennifer Harlow is at her best depicting tough, damaged female characters. I should know, as I'm her literary agent.

I've gotta say out of all the books Jennifer Harlow has written, this one is definitely one of her best (I feel like I say this about every new book she writes lol). She writes the best heroines. So it's no surprise that I absolutely loved Iris Ballard. She definitely was flawed and a total wreck when the book started, which made her more realistic to me, so I loved how once she got back to work with the FBI when Luke Hudson, her former partner asked her for help with the Woodsman killer case. Her inner thoughts and humor were actually right up my alley. She made me laugh a couple of times out loud with the things she was thinking about and said. And also, she doesn't take shit from anyone. Gotta love that!

The cat and mouse game between Iris and the killer was really suspenseful, even when she knew who he was. The way the author wrote this guy was raising the hair on my arms. I never knew what was going to happen from what moment to the other so the unexpectedness of it all made this story even better.

I also really liked the relationship between Iris and Luke. They have quite a lot of history and chemistry between them, which made the dialogue between them always fierce. I'm definitely rooting for them. The ending was sort of abrubt and explosive so I can't wait for the next book in this series to find out where things are going next for Iris.

Overall, I don't read a lot of thrillers but when I do I like them to be just like Beautiful Maids All in a Row. It was well written with a protagonist who is sharp tongued but also flawed who went up against a arrogant yet intellifent sociopath where I wasn't sure what he wasn't going to do next. It was suspenseful right until the very end and I loved it all. I can't wait for the next book!

This one is not for the faint of heart.

From the first page, you're knee-deep in the world of a serial killer who can only be stopped by the work of the best the FBI has to offer. Then you meet Iris Ballard, who is has been drunk, smoking or hopped up on pills since she left the FBI two years ago when her husband was killed.

So starts "Beautiful Maids All in a Row," which chronicles the search for the Woodsman, a sick man who kills women and mutilates their corpses. Ballard is called in by her former partner (and one-time fling) to help create a profile of the killer.

This book was a little different because the bad guy was revealed about 2/3 of the way through. The last third was Iris' struggle to prove his identity and outwit the psychopath, who seems to have everyone fooled. It's San interesting approach, and I can't say that I hated it.

My only quarrel would be that the ending is abrupt. There's no epilogue to say how it all shakes out following the final confrontation, which I think is important for closure. But I guess that's just a reason to pick up the next in the series.

But I definitely liked this series start and would recommend it for all thriller fans. It's heavy on thrills, with light romance and plenty of action.

What more could you want?

"Best wishes on a bright here and now."

Bam! I now have a new series to look forward to after finishing this suspenseful thriller featuring ex FBI agent and forensic psychologist, Iris Ballard. Though quite a hot mess after the death of her husband, Iris comes out of retirement to assist the FBI in its hunt for the Woodsman -- notorious murderer of several women. There are no witnesses, no clues, and no suspects. This is one scary psychopath who may have met his match in Iris. I'd call her relentless.

Grisly and tense, the narrative takes off like a rocket and that makes it hard to put this book down. I liked the dialogue, the writing and the characters -- I even forgive Ms Harlow the insertion of a stereotypical romance angle. Iris is an interesting contradiction as she leaves the vodka behind and puts herself back in the game. The bad guy was as menacing as expected and the scene where he comes after Iris was of course anticipated because that always happens in this genre!

I enjoyed this and can't wait for #2. Recommending to all who like a gory thriller with a strong female protagonist.

Thank you to NetGalley and Alibi Random House for the e-book ARC to review.

The “Woodsman” killer has plagued the east coast for 4 months when Iris Ballard is introduced. Iris is a retired renowned FBI profiler brought in as a consulting forensic psychologist by a former partner and lover. She is hesitant to ‘get back on the horse’ as she is still reeling from the death of her husband two years before, a death she feels responsible for.

In this first book of what’s to become the Iris Ballard series, the author spends time getting to the heart of Iris’s character, filling us in on her backstory as the dead bodies pile up and the investigation plays out. Iris’s very likeable and unconventional personality reminded me a lot of Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone, the star of Grafton’s “alphabet mystery” series.

This book first caught my eye because I am fascinated with the role of a criminal profiler, how astute these people are, playing out scenarios and putting themself in a victim’s shoes. Glad I read it as it is an interesting mystery and I love Iris Ballard’s personality, keen observations and drive. I hope the momentum continues on subsequent installments.

I would like to thank NetGalley and Random House Publishers - Alibi, for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest and open review.
I read Ms Harlow's profile and discovered that she normally writes Fantasy/Sci Fi books.
This was the first book she wrote and to produce a thriller like this at only 19 was an incredible achievement.
From the minute I started reading I found I couldn't put it down. It is chock full of suspense with a bit of romance thrown in.
I loved her detailed character descriptions. It was so easy to visualize each one.
However, this is not a book for the faint-hearted as some of the scenes are extremely graphic.
I would highly recommend this to all thriller readers.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Random House, and Jennifer Harlow for the advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review. This debut author and novel have similarities to Karin Slaughter. Iris Ballard is an ex FBI agent turned Forensic Psychologist. Ballard is an extremely flawed woman who almost died from a stab wound and unfortunately witnessed the death of her husband which led her to suffer from panic attacks while consuming too much alcohol to medicate herself. Trying to put her life back together, she reluctantly takes on a case with former FBI agent and one time lover, Luke Hudson. She must profile a serial killer who rapes his victims and removes their organs while they are still alive. Well written and fast paced. This will make a great series.
