Shirayuki’s work continues through the busy flu season while they wait for the new flower breed to bloom. Meanwhile, while Zen and company are out on business, the question of Kiki’s suitor-to-be rears its head again amidst a series of suspicious attacks on nobles…

I wouldn’t call this a return to form exactly, but things definitely perk up a bit this volume and strive to be a bit more interesting than last volume’s research snoozefest. Small steps, at least.

There are some authors who get so enamoured of their world that they literally lose the plot and I definitely get the sense of that here. Why explore Shirayuki’s desire to ride a horse when we can just blow forward a year and it’s done?

I’m being snippy because this used to be a remarkably dependable series that has really stumbled for me lately. The flu season stuff is interesting since it shows the herbalists doing something useful, plus Ryu gets to grow a little.

There’s also a bath visit that features some okay banter, but also shoehorns in a ‘small boobs’ joke that couldn’t feel more jarring unless somebody threw a display case of Smucker’s at it.

The Zen side of things fares much better, probably because Kiki and Mitsuhide are more fun. What starts as an innocent mission from the king turns into a shockingly interesting plot, as random (?) nobles are being attacked.

I say attacked because this series remains absolutely toothless in its attitude towards violence, where a thrashing is the usual way of things and a plague claims a shockingly low number of victims. I don’t need the streets to run red, but come on…

Still, the Kiki and Mitsuhide dance continues and, while I appreciate the way Zen is showing himself to be a strong leader, I am pretty sure that I have the measure of exactly where this is going, even without the silly cliffhanger that ends things.

The art remains beyond reproach, I will say that much, it has never flagged this whole time. Less so the plotting, which exchanged love and derring-do for clerical work and the series’ usual trope of people being exhausted and falling asleep (for real, there is at least one of these per volume now).

As always, this sprawling cast is wasted without a decent cast list because it is nigh impossible to keep anybody outside the principals straight. Instances where you are clearly meant to go ‘hey, it’s them!’ abound, but it feels like being confronted at a high school reunion by somebody you haven’t thought of in twenty years and fumbling for a name.

Few series stay consistently good over their run, but this one seems unsure of what it wants to be any more and in searching for a new path it constantly throws out the things that made it worthwhile to begin with. Stories are better when building on their foundation, not knocking the struts out and finding a new plot.

3 stars - grousing aside, the Zen plot line is good and it is definitely more tolerable than the last volume. Faint praise, but that’s still all I can give at this point.

The cover is so misleading because most of the focus was actually on Prince Zen (pookie!) and a lot of political intrigue related to Clarines. We also get introduced to two new and very interesting characters. And, we get a bonus story about one of the older characters.

All in all, a fun volume!

Yay, something interesting is finally happening! At least on Zen, Kiki, and Mitsuhide’s end, but still!

I’m glad there’s been a time skip because only doing herbal stuff would have d r a g g e d on WAY more than what I would want. Plus who wants to read about the gang being separated for that long? And Ryu’s so much taller now!

The whole plot surrounding Zen and Co is seriously good and the most interested I’ve been in this story for a while. I’m curious as to how they’re going to get out of this mess and find the real culprits behind it all. I also appreciate the mangaka not making Zen stupid about everything just because he’s a nice guy (which is a trope I HATE), but that even while being nice he’s still smart and not going to let anyone walk all over him.

VERY interested to see how things play out!

Wow, I wasn't expecting such a big time skip! I guess, looking back, it makes sense. No one wants the main characters separated THAT long.
Not a lot actually happened until the end of the volume, but this new story arc could turn out to be pretty interesting...

(Oh, and Mitsuhide and Kiki are perfect together.)

I don't rate mangas.

Story: Meh. Like, really. It's boring, uninteresting.
Characters: A+ original, no sarcasm there, for real.
Relationships between the characters: A+.
Drawing: Beautiful.

Estuvo mejor que el tomo anterior así que seguro seguiré leyendo este manga. Por lo menos esta vez no me aburrió pero tampoco es como que me muero por el próximo tomo.

What a lovely volume!!

I really appreciated how this volume was sort of split in half where Shirayuki is sort of wrapping up things with orimmallys until the next winter season to see if the flower will bloom and then following Zen and the original trio. I didn't realize how much I missed them until the rest of the volume was mainly all about them, which was really nice!

But backing up, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I so love the friendship Shirayuki and Ryu have! With how absolutely hectic things were for them with the flu spreading so rapidly, I thought it awesome how Ryu can look at Shirayuki and sort of know what was up and how to encourage her. I think it works vice versa too. Plus, I agree with Obi that whenever Ryu grows as a herbalist, Shirayuki is right there behind him and growing too, therefore benefiting them both and growing together. <3

And oh my goodness, Little Ryu isn't really little anymore! He's SO cute!

You know, I never thought I would love seeing Izana on page, but when it comes to Zen, I do. LOL! I feel bad because the way he teased Zen in this one had me crackling because Izana has no sense of shame when it comes to Zen. LOL! Truly, never ever expected I would feel that way, but I think Izana always spices things up on page with this being no exception.

Also Lord Hisame! I know he's sort of the "villain," but I always have fun reading when he's on page, especially if the aides are involved! He's such a hoot! Plus, he's pretty calculating, and it's also interesting to see what he'll do next (this volume was no exception because I was pretty shocked honestly LOL).

That cliffhanger though! :o Can't say I saw that coming and we all know it's NOT true, but it definitely makes it no less shocking.

I was surprised by how much was "going on" in this volume because majority of the time these volumes are fairly chill with the occasional intense moment, but I feel like all the recent situations have had a lot riding on it, with this one being the most.

(Random note: I LOVED the scene between Obi and Rata! Such a fun and funny conversation!)

When we were introduced to the twins concealing their identities, I had no clue why they were important because I kinda glazed over the backstory of the Queen in her side castle thing….

Anyway, she heard of the Bergat (whatever the twins last name) family being bad so she stripped them of their power and started to rule where they were located in the place that Shirayuki and Ryu are gonna go in the future (whatever that place is called). These two twins are technically seen as bad because their family (I think father) was such a bad ruler, so that’s why they hide their identity, but they wanna help with a war that is apparently going on. What war? I don’t know, but imma probably find out in the next volume.

I’m terrible with names and places, so this is for me to keep track of the plot. Yes, there is the beginning summary of each volume, but I haven’t been reading that. Since I’ve been reading a volume every couple of days, I thought I wouldn’t need to read the summary stuff…. I was wrong cause it might’ve told me about the Bergamot thing with the Queen and twins and whatnot. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Obi, Shirayuki & Ryuu experience their 1st winter in Lyrias & dealing with the northern flu.
10 months later; Ryuu has grown a lot & now at the same height as Shirayuki. Shirayuki has learnt how to ride a horse thanks to Lata Forzeno though she & Obi haven't informed Zen & his aides yet.
Izana gives Zen a surprising wake-call, chat before giving him his next assignment: an inspection at Sreg's base.
Vice-Captain Hisame informs Zen privately about 2 new recruits from the Bergatt House, which shocks him as the Bergatt House had objected, strongly, against Zen's mother new rules thus resulting land taken away from them as they were supposed to be protecting the people instead of owning them.
Hisame, Zen & his aides are suspicious of their motives so though they become friendly towards them, secretly they are spying on them. Soon news come that 3 Houses have been attacked & they all sent marriage proposals to Kiki. Hisame proposes to Kiki in order to lure out the enemy.
At the end Obi & Shirayuki learns Mitsuhide has become a suspect in the attack of the 3 Houses.

The work with the Orimmallys flowers and the wunderrocks comes to a stand still as the researchers wait for the flowers to bloom. Then we have a one-year time skip (Rio has a growth spurt~) and we have a story skip, over to Zen, Mitsuhide, and Kiki as King Izana sent them to Sereg where two interesting people have joined the knights there.

Not a lot happens, but I fear for my second favorite character.

Boring? Dealing with the flu… And then a year flies by. Ryu gets taller! It won’t be long before Shirayuki, Ryu and Obi’s time in Lillias will be over. The mangaka must really hate the main couple because they have only seen each other 2 times that last year THAT WE DIDN’T EVEN GET TO SEE!!! Ugh.
Meanwhile, I guess there’s some drama going on with the nobles? But nothing that interests me though LOL
I’m honestly just trying to read all the physical volumes I have…

Review:

This volume was a lot more fun to read than the previous one. We get to see Zen and his group again, there was a time jump so we didn't have to spend a long time with them in Lilas doing much of the same thing. I usually don't like time jumps, but it works here. Little Ryu has gotten so tall! The time jump also hopefully means that Zen and Shirayuki are reunited soon.

Same review for all volumes:

Watched the anime and knew that the story continued in the manga. It's light fluff. I know that the premise requires Shirayuki and Zen to be together but it would have been more interesting to me if along the way they realized that they are better as supportive friends and she ended up with Obi. Also, she just utters "Zen" way too often.

Admittedly the story has become slightly boring to me. It spends a lot of time on politics and research, and Zen has now been separated from Shirayuki for a long time. We don’t even get to see the rare visit, though they reference it.

Months go by and Ryu finally grows up a bit. Shirayuki always seems to feel under the microscope. Kiki receives several marriage proposals and may be forced to decide. Twins are introduced. Friends or enemies? Will Mitsuhide declare his love to Kiki?

Another great addition to the series. It was so fun to see everyone grow over time. The characters seem so much more mature and settled now. It's a lot of fun, leading into a really fun new arc as well.

Zen's starting to get a bit...boring. really torn because I still like him but... I'm liking Obi more and more just because he's always there with Shirayuki rather than sitting back and not interacting or being in a completely different part of the country.
