Very well written boogie man story that has sat on my tbr shelf for far too long. Seems like I have way too many of those and am crawling around looking for more of Foster's work that I've bought but not read.
And there's another...better get reading. How about you?
"Fear. That is the word that I think most describes my mood while reading this. You can feel it. Smell it. Almost taste it. When you see the character’s jump and look behind them to see who is there, you do it yourself. When you see them run, you feel like getting up and running yourself. You know when they are caught, they have no chance."
Started out as one thing, finished as another: a dark espionage story that abruptly turned into near grimdark/Stephen King territory at the end. The two weren't bad, but gave me whiplash and I didn't care for the lack of transition/lack of successful blending of genres.
John Foster knows how to put a damn sentence together. I may or may not be jealous. He also knows how to keep you in suspense. I'm not surprised Grey Matter Press chose this as their inaugural novel; a bold, unique choice. On a side note, I think this is only Foster's second novel, which means the best has yet to come, even thought Mister White is truly awesome.
This excellent story creates an atmosphere of fear and claustrophobia, but as a prequel to a novel it leaves the reader with more questions than answers.
The writing is very intense, fast-paced, no unneeded sentences, very graphic - but the flawed German bothers me a bit.
