We're back in Benevolence for book 2 of the Home Sweet Home series and things couldn't be sweeter. Brenna Lamont is back to help run the family Sweets store while her sister Addy is pregnant. Well and to be honest, she really doesn't have anywhere else to be but that's her little secret. Hopefully she won't run the business into the ground. That's exactly what will happen if she can't figure out why she can't seem to make the fudge come out right. River Maynard is back in Benevolence too. He's trying to help his foster save her failing ranch. Dealing with the "guests" she has there is no easy task but he's doing the best he can and as long as he brings her some Lamont chocolate every day her spirits stay high. That means seeing the very tempting Brenna Lamont every day though and that could lead to big trouble!

You don't want to miss this wonderfully sweet small town read. I highly recommend it.

Sweet Surprises by Shirlee McCoy is the 2nd book in her Home Sweet Home series. Brenna Lamont is returning home to Benevolence, a small town in Washington. Brenna is coming home to help her grandfather run Chocolate Haven. What no one knows is that Brenna is in dire straits, with her fiancée running off with another woman, and taking every penny of her money. Forced to close her successful business and lifestyle, and unable to pay bills, Brenna heads home determined not to let her family know the truth. All they know is she was dumped by her fiancée.

River Maynard, our hero, is now home helping his foster mother recover from a stroke and help keep her ranch running. River, who has a successful restaurant business in another state, wants to convince Belinda to sell the ranch and come live with him. There are a number of others who live with Belinda, helping her, whom River is not really happy about. They all are either homeless or wayward teenagers who have major issues, which Belinda overlooks, as she gives them a home. However, River sees them as more trouble than help.

Brenna will find working at Chocolate Haven more difficult then she imagined, especially in creating the famous fudge, which she cannot recreate much to her frustration. She meets River, whom she remembers from her school days, and a friendship begins. River will help Brenna with the chocolate (not the fudge, since it’s a secret recipe) preparation on many evenings, utilizing his expertise as a chef. The attraction between them builds slowly, and they made a great couple. River begins to suspect that Brenna is in a more dire situation then she has let on to others, and he will eventually learn the truth about her ex fiancee. Will Brenna be able to overcome her fears of loving someone, and trust River? Will River, who is falling hard for Brenna, be willing to stay in Benevolence?

In the midst of their budding romance, is a mystery of vandalism against Brenna and the Chocolate Haven. Sweet Surprises was a nice story, with a very likable couple. It was nice to see some of those from the first book, and we met a lot of interesting new characters. The ending left things open for the next book, which is another mystery surrounding Brenna’s sister Willow. I would have liked more closure on some things left partially open. I suspect Willow will be the lead in the next book. If you enjoy small town romances, family atmosphere, sweet likeable couple, as well a nice story line; I suggest you read Sweet Surprises.

Sweet Surprises is the second book in the Home Sweet Home series by Shirlee McCoy. It can easily be read as a standalone story.

Brenna Lamont left her small home town of Benevolence and made something of her life. She's travelled, she's been a fashion model, opened her own business and was engaged. All that came to an abrupt end when her fiance ran off with another woman AND all of Brenna's money. In a nearly bankrupt state, she returns home to Benevolence to help her grandfather in their family chocolate shop. She keeps her problems to herself and everybody just thinks her and her fiance have split up, but nothing else.

River Maynard, older than Brenna had left Benevolence just as she had. He became a successful chef and opened two restaurants. He finds himself back in Benevolence to help his foster mother while she recovers from a stroke. All her life she has taken in troubled people and helped them lead better lives, River is one of her success stories as he was the ultimate troubled teen. Even now, when she is unwell his foster mother has a motley crew of characters living at the rundown ranch. River wants to kick them all out but his mum forbids it so he will just have to learn to cope with them all.

River and Brenna meet up again after years of being away from town when he needs to buy some of the famously delicious fudge from the chocolate shop after hours. It's the one thing that his mum looks forward to every evening, and one of the motley crew had finished what had been bought for her.

There is an instant attraction between them. One that slowly builds during the story. They both have baggage, especially Brenna and it seems that any relationship between them will have to wait until she can learn to trust.

As well as their relationship building the story involving the chocolate shop, the running or it, the secret recipes and seeing Brenna trying to learn them was great. As was learning about the various characters living on the ranch, and watching them learn to trust River and visa versa. There was definitely a lot to enjoy in this story and although I am not a fan of contemporary romances, this one was a pleasure to read and I can happily recommend it.

Sweet Surprises by Shirlee McCoy is the 2nd book in her Home Sweet Home series. I enjoy the setting of this series, small town Benevolence, home to the family store, Chocolate Haven. The Lamont family patriarch, the three Lamont girls Grandfather, has been unable to run the store due to health issues. The first book in this series is about Adeline, who is now happily married and pregnant, so it is now Brenna's turn to return home to Benevolence, and help her grandfather run Chocolate Haven. What no one knows is that Brenna is in dire straits, with her fiancée running off with another woman, and taking every penny of her money. Forced to close her successful business and leave her lifestyle behind, Brenna heads home determined not to let her family know the truth.

River Maynard, the male MC, has returned home to Benevolence to help his foster mother recover from a stroke and help keep her ranch running. River, who has a successful restaurant business in another state, wants to convince Belinda to sell the ranch and come live with him. River is not happy with all the other "guests" living at the ranch when he arrives. Belinda wants to help the homeless teens, but River wants them gone. Belinda's desire for chocolate brings these two together. Will they work through their mistrust of others and develop a friendship or even love? Can these two who ran from Benevolence at one time, be able to remain and plant roots?

Along with this second chance romance, there is a mystery involving vandals targeting Brenna and Chocolate Haven. Sweet Surprises was a sweet (no pun intended) story, with a very likable couple. There were some very interesting characters, especially those living at Belinda's ranch. Some reviewers found the ending a bit abrupt and it was obvious that it left things open for the third book in this trilogy. If you enjoy small town romances, family atmosphere, sweet likeable couple, a few quirky characters, as well a nice story line then I recommend that you pick up Sweet Surprises, or the first in this series, Sweet Haven and read about the Lamont Family in Benevolence, Washington.

I picked this book, because I thought it would be a sweet little romance novel. The main two characters had gone through some tough times. One came home to help Belinda, who had been his foster mother, and she had a stroke. Her home was in disrepair, and she had people living with her, who appeared to be no help to Belinda. River was able to organize those people, into a helping group, who loved Belinda, and they became a family.

Brenna Lamont came home to help her grandfather run the family Chocolate shop. They were famous for their fudge, which Brenna couldn't master. She could make the other chocolate treats that the family made and sold. Brenna had a fiance, who had run off with her savings, which made her lose every thing. She didn't want to tell her family the bigger reason she came home.

River and Brenna hit it off, and they helped each other. The ending seemed very abrupt, so it wasn't very satisfying.

It started off okay but then evolved into typical chick lit. Main character, Brenna, carries baggage from her last relationship and is unable to open up to the new man in her life, River. Even though he prods and tries to get her to talk about the past, she won’t. Then comes the predictable angst of being physically attracted to each other, but being torn over making a mistake. Back and forth. One moment she likes him, the next they aren’t speaking. This is repeated too many times and isn’t satisfying to the reader. Mysteriously, they decide to have a future together and that’s the end! So many loose ties left undone! The book is only half written. Terrible waste of my time.
And really, after 25 attempts she still can’t make fudge?

It was a family story, this time about the second sister, Brenna. Although the book was fluent, some subjects are not completed. First of all I wanted to know what happened to Adeline, did she gave birth to her baby? What about the smallest sister, Willow, did she solve all the problems she had? I was a bit curious 🤨

Bad language, even without the "f" word, really spoiled this book for me; I was tempted not to finish it, but the lead male character, River, intrigued me enough to keep reading.

I liked the first book in this series and couldn't wait for the second book. I was surprised at how much I liked Brenna's story. From the "glimpse" I had of her in the first book, I wasn't prepared to like her much but I was pleasantly surprised! She was great! Her back story was so good (don't want to give it away!) and she was such a realistic person. Everyone in her small hometown thinks she's got it made but they don't know everything that's happened to her both growing up and since she left home at 17. It's a great chance to look at ourselves and remind ourselves not to judge others. We don't know what people have actually been through. This goes for River too. He was a foster kid growing up that got in a ton of trouble and his foster parents, Belinda and Dillard, really turned him around but the people in town don't always see that he's changed. Although he's been gone a long time (and is very successful now), he comes back to help his foster mom, Belinda. I really enjoyed Brenna and River's relationship & story. So MANY things happen when Brenna comes back to town - it's like her arrival sets in motion all these bad things but none of them are her fault really! However, the lessons learned are so worth reading this book! I loved every page and every character. I can't wait for the next book about the 3rd sister.....why does it have to be next summer??!!

5 STARS

I want fudge now! Even the mistakes Brenna keeps throwing out sound good. Brenna Lamont has come back home after her life fell apart to help her grandfather is his candy shop. Brenna spends a lot of time trying to make the family top secret fudge and other candies. This Sweet Surprises is a yummy book.

It is very touching. Lots of drama, interesting characters that I want to see more of, a little mystery and lots of chocolate. Oh lets not forget the humor or the romance. It is also a clean read.

River Maynard is back in Benevolence, Washington, A place he did not want to be. The foster mother he lived in had a stroke, Her ranch and home has a worn look. His foster mother has a bunch of free loaders living with her too. He is determined to make things better for her.

I am very interested to what will happen to some of the characters in the next book. It does a great job of teasing you to want more.

I love the small town of Benevolence. I want more than just one more book set in it.

I like ShirleeMcCoy's writing style. I will read more books by her in the future.

I was given this Arc from NetGalley and Kensington Books. I promised to give a honest review of Sweet Surprises in return.

I hope she called the police on the guy.

Because jumping out at her in the dark, in a cemetery, isn't scary. At all. And learn grammar, buddy.

I would love to work in that shop. Add a bookstore, and I'd never leave.

Men and their pride. At least Mack was trying to protect Belinda.

Haha! Her grandfather is a teenager in an old man's body.

Ugh, that is the worst break-up note ever.

Oh, I like that "recipe".

Wow, she gets hurt a lot.

What's the story between River and Porter?

Way to overreact, Janelle. Poor Mack!

Poor Jax! His whole family was murdered?

The housemother is an idiot.

What the heck is Willow into?

Now I want fudge.

A good book makes you anxious to read the next one. What happens with Dan? What is the deal with the check? Why does River hate Porter? So many questions!

I can easily admit I loved Sweet Surprises by Shirlee McCoy just like I love a great piece of fudge. It is just so satisfying. There is much to savor in this story of Brenna and River. The characters were wonderful, the bad boy makes good is a theme I love. The families and supporting characters were eccentric but lovable. The small town drama could be a page out of the small town in which I live, even down to the dilemmas facing the aging. The hand written secret recipes with the extra family notes were a treasure as was the sister camaraderie.

This story simply flowed; not too fast and never dull as Ms. McCoy’s descriptive style of writing caught my attention from the first cemetery scene to the very end. This was the best one yet that I have read by this author. A treat that I can highly recommend.

The publisher through Net Galley provided a copy.

Brenna Lamont never wanted to live in Benevolence, but when her cheating boyfriend takes everything from her she comes back home. While helping her grandfather with the family business Chocolate Haven, Brenna tries to fight her attraction to River Maynard, the small town's worst nightmare years back and now a successful restaurant owner.

I didn't read the first book of this series, but I fell in love with the small town atmosphere right from the start. The main characters were my favourite thing about this book. They were well developed, likeable and interesting. Sadly, the ending felt rushed, because a lot of things were left unanswered. But I guess they will be adressed in Willow's story. All in all, it's a heart-warming story about love, family ties and finding your place in the world.

*I've got this book from NetGalley in exchange of a honest review*

I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. I like stories about little towns and this one was no exception. All of the characters were interesting and unique.
I have to mention that it is the second book in the series and I haven't read the first one, but I didn't have any problems understanding what was going on.
Off course this book isn't life changing piece of literature, but enjoyable non the less.
The main reason why I didn't gave it 5 stars is that the ending was a little bit too rushed, and there were some parts that needed more explaining.

Do I recommend it ? Yes.

Book two of the Home sweet home series and it's just as delicious as Sweet Haven. Brenna is back to run Chocolate Haven while sister Addie is pregnant. She's glad to have somewhere to go since her ex has cleared out their bank accounts and scammed his clients leaving her a mountain of debt and problems. When River realizes that Brenna is back he thinks he's too busy to have a love life but he can't stop helping Brenna out. A little predictable but a great story with the added line of the homeless helping out at his ranch. Looks like book three will be just as tempting.

I liked each story in the HOME SWEET HOME TRILOGY. In this second story, it's sister Brenna's turn to help out at the family chocolate shop. This is a sweet small town romance where Brenna returns home after being humiliated and finds love with River, a man who came back to help his foster mother who is now ailing. Together the two click and their story is sweet and heartwarming which is what I want in a small town romance. Next up, their sister Willow will return for her turn to help at the shop and take a crack at making the best fudge ever.

Great story. I loved Brenna and River, enjoyed watching them both fit into a town when they had each grown up, but never felt a part of. Loved watching them come to realize that the only thing missing was each other. It wasn't an easy transition, especially for Brenna, but it was a fun journey to take with them. Having read the first book in the series (not essential, but gives the back story of Brenna's family), it was also a nice return to Benevolence and old friends.

Sweet small town romance = loved that chocolate provided the backdrop for Brenna and River. I had not read the first book in this series but I didn't find that a problem as McCoy is a good storyteller. This is a fast read because it's engaging and pleasant. The ups and downs of the romance and the ins and outs of some of the other characters will keep you flipping pages. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC_ this is perfect for the beach, a lazy weekend, or a commute.

Delightful story

Rich characters with backbone and family values make this novel an intriguing part of the series. I do wonder why Brenna's grandfather didn't show her how to make the family recipe for fudge. Making fudge can be a daunting task even if you've made it many times. And the thought that because she was family and should have the skill for making fudge is just moronic.

Like her books but had a hard time getting through this one. Don't know why. This is the second in a story of three sisters whose family live in a very small town in Washington. I have the first one on my nook but don't remember reading it. It is light reading. Should have been easy to get through.

This is the first time I've read one of Ms McCoy's books and I really enjoyed it. It's a sweet small town romance. A nice easy read too. I loved reading how Brenna and River's relationship took a rocky start but gradually worked it's way out. I'm looking forward to reading Bittersweet, her next book, as soon as it comes out!!

Striving for the perfection

Filling in for her grandfather in the family chocolate store and trying desperately to find the "touch" to make perfect fudge and go find acceptance from a mother who is a perfectionist. While this need to be perfect, she finds being herself is all she needs. A very heart warming story.

I'm not going to reintegrate the summary here because you probably read it already. This is a sweet story that is an easy read. If you enjoy romance stories that are "clean," then this might be for you. One thing that made this story less than perfect and that was one character's nickname was consistently spelled with the first letter in lower case. The ending was was very abrupt too.
