Low has amazing concept I want to experience: underwater cities in a world with its sun going Red Giant. What odd and bewildering things are for us to find out? I am threading my way along the 1-6 collected version, so some of my criticism may be only warranted once I move a bit more forward.
This issue feels like its own version of the Mos Eisley cantina, and shows more of Low's world building. Poluma is the pirates haven, and the Tocchini's panels put a menagerie of weird and wonder on display. We also get the first glimpse of Stel's darker side, which is refreshing and makes her feel more authentic and 3D as a character. Marik also displays a different facets, showing the characters' depths. And the violent end - the proverbial wall of bricks falling on top of us - raises some interesting questions on trauma, Stockholm syndrome, abandonment, grief and anger.
Pulled this one up to 5 stars on the same grounds of giving 4 to issue #2.

In Poluma, the third city, it's a den of iniquity but at least it has clean air. Stel and Marik contemplate getting a ship and going back to Salus to tell the Salusians to come and settle in Poluma. Stel and Marik then see Roln, the man that killed Johl and abducted Della and Tajo. Tajo is with him. She calls him father. Stel doesn't think it through, she just confronts him without a plan and is captured.
Marik steals back into Tajo's chamber to rescue him, but Tajo betrays him. She's not his little sister anymore.

The things that can happen to you after ten years, what you start to do and believe in order to survive. This issue takes a deep look at the human condition when it comes to survival and dealing with tragedy. What really is the definition of family and how far would you go to save those you loved, do you think you could forget them or even turn against them? Just a few questions this issues brings up.

Issue 4 finds Stel and Marik in the pirate city of Poluma, this issue serves as a nice introduction to possible main antagonist of the series and the barbaric denizens of the pirate city. Excellent writing and visuals as per usual. If you liked Scott Snyder's The Wake you'll definitely enjoy this book.

Boom. Issue 4 explodes with excitement & innovation as Low opens up a whole new society. I would give 5 stars but I do find some slight inconsistency in one character's supposed memory loss. I'm glad I didn't read this issue til I had the next one in hand too bc it'll put you on the edge of your seat!

I find it a bit weird that pirates thousands of years into the future should still speak like they come from Scotland/Ireland/wherever these pirate stereotypes are supposed to be from, me hearties.
