The underwater city of Salus, humanity's last refuge, is running out of air and time. Poverty, disease, and corruption are rampant, and the church of Optimolgy can offer no solace as powerful as hard cream, the strange drug that keeps the bleak realities at bay. Police Inspector Marik Cain has sunk so low into that haze; should an opportunity for hope present itself, can he rise again?

Low has amazing concept I want to experience: underwater cities in a world with its sun going Red Giant. What odd and bewildering things are for us to find out? I am threading my way along the 1-6 collected version, so some of my criticism may be only warranted once I move a bit more forward.
Issue #2 fixes several issues of issue #1: the latter is a prologue of sorts with #2 shaping up to being the beginning of the "meat and potatoes." Art is as exquisite as ever, so I won't say more about it. Stel is becoming quite a favorite character of mine: out in the sea of grimdark, morally grey, jaded and cynical characters, she stands out as an optimistic sort who is also realistic. Her optimism takes a lot of effort and work, and o find her to be an inspiration and role model to people like me who let their sarcasm and pessimistic view of the world settle simply because "why bother" or "what's the point?". Nobody said it was easy, and Stel has had it pretty rough in issue #1 (#2 salts the wound, if you're asking) but she perseveres. It might be hope taken to its maximum delirium, or just a human being refusing to let go of such a human emotion, that of hope. I didn't give it 5 stars because Marik's arc is nothing new - nothing with wrong with it, it makes sense and opens up new thread concerning the status quo of the underground city's health, and potential class conflicts, but that's it. The final 2 panels are also a nice cliffhanger, like a massive tv season ender to get people pumped for the next one. Still, the others aspects "average" the issue a bit, a shame for Stel's panels.

I have decided that the art by Greg Tocchini is... good. Great even. Contender for the best comic book art I have ever witnessed. Granted, it's still hard to make shit out half the time. But once you know what you're getting it's a lot easier to stop caring about useless things like realism. It's the colors at the end of the day that really steal everything. All of it feels warm on the eyes.
The storytelling is also a lot more digestible than last time. The writing feels personal; like something out of a diary. The stakes are high and hopelessness is detectable in every word.

Issue 2 of Low fixes up the problesm with the heavy first issue. We follow the son of the main character who has devolved into a drug taking corrupt cop, Low is an interesting series, it's main character always has a positive outlook despite the dire circumstances humanity faces.

This issue focuses on the corruption within Salus, most high ranking officials spend their time in drug fueled orgies and live in excess. The scene was quite shocking and resembled the scenes on Sextillion in Saga. There is a rather uncomfortable scene at the end and this reflects Remender's writing ability-he doesn't have to show the readerr everything to get a reaction unlike other writers that use shocking scenes as a crutch.

Tocchino is still firing on all cylinders delivering breathtaking artwork that is simply a treat to look at. Low is shaping up to be a really interesting comic.

This issue picks up ten years from where the first issue ended. With only six months of breathable air left, Salus is caught in the throes of a bedlam existence, corruption, disease, poverty. We meet Marik, Stel and Johl's son. He's a corrupt cop addicted to the drug Cream, some kind of ecstatic hallucinogenic. While under the influence, he mistakenly shoots and kills a whore. He's arrested and taken in.
Stel receives a transmission from one of the probes they sent out to look for an inhabitable planet and it reports the affirmative. Stel gets the Senate committee to release her son to her and give them a pod to let them explore this inhabitable planet.

Artwork just as good as the first and I'd even venture to say that it is better! It doesn't waste anytime getting to the pain of loss and the downward spiral that we can fall into all too easily while presenting us with the path of strength in which we fight rather than giving into the despair and believing in hope just because we can. The belief that with a change in attitude you do actually have control over your life. Can't wait for the rest!

Despite the eye-rolling contrived nudity, and the fact that the main female character is wearing a flesh-colored dress throughout this issue, making her look naked, I'm still really enjoying how Low manages to be "big idea" sci-fi, but at the same time being driven by character development and emotion.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

As with the first part of Low I loved the graphics. The story continues, as well written as the first volume. Female character's outfit is interesting!

Story hits a bit of a lull, but stick with it. The following issues make it worthwhile.

Why does Remender always crush everything? It's almost becoming a pornography. And yet, ugh. At least he has the courage to do it, but it's numbing me.
