A Hiss-tory of Magic (Book 1) Cath Greenstone, her cousin Bea, and her hippie aunt Astrid live in Wonder Falls, a small town near the mystical Niagara Falls. They run the Brew-Ha-Ha café, and naturally, they’re witches hiding in plain sight along with their three magical cats, Treacle, Peanut Butter, and Marshmallow. When Brew-Ha-Ha's baker is burnt to a crisp, along with their beloved café, Aunt Astrid lets out a big family secret: a powerful spell book, a Greenstone heirloom from the Salem days, has been stolen from its secret hiding spot in the café. If it’s fallen into the wrong hands, black magic could destroy not only Wonder Falls but the world. A secret society… A new detective with a shady past… A once-bullied local returning to town as a multimillionaire. Who in town could know Cath’s family secret? Cath, Bea, and Astrid must use their witch powers to uncover the deadly truth. Cath communicates with their cats, also magically inclined, and they help uncover more than one secret lurking in wonderful Wonder Falls.
Pawsitively Dead (Book 2) When Cath visits her parents’ graves, she finds the dead body of the local hairstylist. What’s even stranger is that she also stumbles upon an older corpse, nearly a skeleton, of a woman who died in 1958. It has been exhumed from her grave, but who would do that? While the police are stumped, Cath, Bea, and Aunt Astrid suspect sorcery… necromancy…
Cat-astrophic Spells (Book 3) Treacle, Cath’s magical black cat, is missing. Meanwhile, in the mysterious town of Wonder Falls, a beloved chocolatier dies. The police deem the cause a heart attack, but Cath, Bea, and Aunt Astrid know something more sinister is at play. And whoever is out there has Treacle.
I bought this box set a while back and only now got around to reading it. I'm sorry I waited.
The stories in the set are A Hiss-tory of Magic, Pawsitively Dead, and Cat-astrophic Spells. Each is a well-constructed cozy mystery featuring the Greenstone family - Cath, Bea, and Astrid ... and their cats Treacle, Peanut Butter, and Marshmallow, respectively.
Neither the Greenstones nor their cats are what they seem to be: the women are witches and the cats are their familiars. Treacle and Cath have a particularly close bond, with Cath being able to communicate with him.
Each of the mysteries contains a paranormal element, as one might expect ... and while they are suspenseful and sometimes creepy they are not "horror stories."
I enjoyed this box set and look forward to reading mysteries 4-6.
This box set of the Wonder Cats Mysteries contains books 1-3 of paranormal cozy mysteries.
The first book is A HISS-TORY OF MAGIC which introduces the town of Wonder Falls, Ontario and the Greenstone family of witches. The world being is well-done as we are introduced to the town and the characters. I like the first person point-of-view. The mystery kept me enthralled trying to figure it out.
I liked Cath, Bea, and Astrid. I also liked the cats Treacle, Marshmallow, and Peanut Butter and how they work together with each other and their humans. I want to know what happens with Cath, Min, and Blake.
Next up is PAWSITIVELY DEAD. Someone is raising the dead and not doing a very good job of it. Cath, Bea, and Astrid have to figure out how it is being done as well as who is behind it. Bea’s marriage is also on the rocks as Jake found out Bea’s secret in the first book A HISS-TORY OF MAGIC.
I loved the build-up of suspense in this book. I was on the edge of my seat as I followed the trail of magic and how characters linked into it. The mystery was good. My instinct is telling me that Blake is onto Cath but I cannot be sure if he remembers incidents from the first book or if he is himself linked into the magic. I’ll have to keep reading to find out.
Last in this boxed set is CAT-ASTROPHIC SPELLS where Cath cannot talk to cats because something evil is blocking their communication. A man who does not know he is a medium lets Astrid know when the murders are happening. The dark has come to Wonder Falls and it up to Cath and her family to bring the light back.
I enjoyed these three books. I am looking forward to more of the series. Mostly because I want to know when Cath and Blake will let go of their bad beginning and open up to each other. The storytelling was great. I was on the edge of my seat as I read these books. I wanted to know how the evil would be contained. I liked the cast of characters—witch and civilian. Well worth reading!
Nice collection of murder mysteries caused or solved by magic, with great input from the family cats. The timing in the writing style is wonderful, you feel you are hearing the tale told by a real storyteller. Love the concept of clean old fashioned earth magic with love and friendship mixed in. There is just enough peril and tension to make you keep reading to see how the girls get untangled this time. Some of the action is quite surprising, holds your interest well. Tales of magic can be dark and imposing. While these books touched on some of that, most of the time magic is used as a cure not a weapon. Great books to be recommended to anyone who enjoys this genre.
I loved these three books because they were quirky and funny. I adored Treacle and his two friends Marshmallow and Peanut Butter, although he was the feline hero. Cath could talk to animals, in particular cats, which came in very handy with murders occuring in town. I liked her Aunt and cousin who helped her solve cases. Bea, her cousin was married to Jake a local policeman. I can't wait to read more about the three Witches and their cats.
This is a good little cozy series (I consider it cozy, I guess some wouldn't like the magic aspect). The main protagonist Cath is interesting and the secondary characters are likable. I enjoy reading how their relationships change through the books. The cats are fun and an interesting aspect of the books, each person has their own cat and each cat has its own personality. Overall, the books are quick and easy and perfect for mindless entertainment.
This 3 book box set contains the the first three books in the Wonder Cats Mystery Series. These stores have twists and will keep you guessing until the end. These stories involve Cath and her cat. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. These stories are a great way to spend some free time!
I received this box set in exchange for my honest review.
A great set of cozies for leisure reading. Each book is a stand-alone so that you won't be lost if you haven't read them in order. The characters are endearing and interesting (if a little predictable in places) and the plot easy to follow and well-constructed. I especially like the cats and their personalities.
I recommend this series if you just want to escape for a while.
I received this book set from Book Bub. It is the first three books in the series. I enjoyed reading them. I liked that Cath can talk to cats. I will be buying the rest of the books in the series.
This is a fun series. Quick reading, but keeps your interest. I have purchased the next one in the series, but have a few others to read before I get to it.
After reading #7 in this series, I decided to start at the beginning, and was happy to find a box set of the first three in the series.
1 - A Hiss-tory of Magic The three witches, Cath, Bea, and Astrid run the Brew-Ha-Ha cafe. When it burns down, killing their baker, Aunt Astrid tells the two girls that her heirloom spell book has been stolen from its hiding place in the cafe. They need to find out who has it and get it back before the thief starts using it for black magic. Since they are keeping their witching abilities secret (even Bea's policeman husband Jake doesn't know), they have to disguise a lot of their sleuthing. Their three cats, with whom Cath can talk telepathically, are delightful. I love their names: Treacle. Marshmallow, and Peanut Butter!
2 - Pawsitively Dead Cath goes to visit her parents' graves and finds two bodies - the local hairstylist and a much older body that was apparently exhumed. The witches suspect necromancy, and secretly investigate since the police are getting nowhere. The family of Cath's friend Min are involved somehow, too, making it even more important to Cath.
3 - Cat-astrophic Spells Cath's cat Treacle has disappeared. A local chocolatier dies of an apparent heart attack; but the witches know he was killed with magic, and the murderer is looking for more. And whoever it is has stolen Treacle and they must find him before something awful happens.
This series is quite enjoyable, and the different plots of the books keep them from getting too more-of-the-same. I especially liked their interaction with the cats. There is a faint thread of love interest for Cath, who meets at least two men she is either interested in or attracted to or both. But keeping her witch talents a secret from them isn't easy, especially since Cath is just a bit of a klutz and doesn't always make the best decisions. Luckily her cousin Bea and Aunt Astrid are always there for her. I will probably read more of these later - after four in a row, I need a change for now.
Wonder Cats Mysteries. YEAH! Cats and mysteries and magic -- oh my. Cats and mysteries and magic go together like -- well, like my husband and chocolate (my husband will do almost anything for chocolate, and I'm a close second). So these cats, and their familiars (the humans) -- what, you thought it was the other way around? Anyway, cats and humans get involved in some squeaky mysteries that involve more magic and more mystery and some scary circumstances. Oh yeah, and some romance added for more interest when the cats need a bit of a rest. Harper Lin creates these fabulous worlds, and you need to get into them as soon as you can. QUICK.
A HISS-TORY OF MAGIC, PAWSITIVELY DEAD and CAT-ASTROPIC SPELLS make up books 1-3 in this boxed set. I like witches and I love cats, but there was something missing -- especially in the first two stories. I felt that there were pages missing (???) in the first story. I kept looking at the page before thinking perhaps there were pages stuck together. Odd ... Magic???!!!! The third book was the best of the three. Great titles!
I read this whole series, and the first 2 books were interesting. The third book didn't catch my interest. There was something about it, I just can't explain, but it just didn't get my interest like the other 2 did.
