Harrison Gray realized years ago that tomboy Charlotte Andrews didn't need--or want--to be looked after. But he can't keep silent when he learns about the rogue Charlie intends to marry. When he tries to reason with her, a terrible storm leaves "him" the one in need. Charlie agrees to help--and starts to wonder if a little looking after is just what she needs.
A rare solid 5 means I LOVED it or was so impressed that I bring these books up in random conversations.
4.5-4 means great story. Recommended.
I don't post 3 star or below for newer Christian fiction (conflict of interest--I might have to work with the author). But any 3s mean the author wrote a good story, just something about it made it not a favorite.
2 was not that great and never redeemed itself.
1 aggravated me so much or was so poorly done I DNF or if I did finish, I wished I could get my time back.
What a unique and absolutely wonderful novella this was! The author did such a good job at creating two characters who have flaws, but are utterly likable, as well. Harrison and Charlotte (Charlie) have great chemistry, a problematic history, and I had to laugh at the fact that their first kiss wasn’t all that great for them! I really enjoyed this story and loved watching these two characters grow so much from beginning to end.
I am really looking forward to the first book in this author's upcoming Teaville Moral Society series, as it will have a character who is introduced in this novella. I think she will have a very interesting story.
What a fun and interesting premise! I loved how these two had misconceptions about each other and circumstances had to throw them together to make them act on their attraction and chemistry. Great moments of romantic tension made it a delight to read, and it was well-paced for the shorter length of a novella.
(I received a copy of this story from the publisher in exchange for my honest review)
This is actually my second reading of the story as I read it when it originally released in the four Novella collection entitled “With This Ring?”. I reread it today because I am finally going to read the Melissa Jagears series that this is a prequel to. This was a fun story, and I really liked Harrison. “Engaging the Competition” is a good start to the Teaville series and I’m looking forward to Lydia’s story!
Engaging the Competition is a short, sweet novella that left me smiling. Charlie and Harrison are a mismatched pair that are destined to be together. This is a good choice if you’re looking for a quick feel-good romance.
I don't know how I'd managed to not read this earlier, given I've read and enjoyed two Teaville Moral Society novels. Fortunately, this isn't a prequel as such - it's a lovely standalone novella with a huge aww! factor.
LOVELY! I LOVE the title of this one and it fits this story excellently! I loved and felt a kin to Charlotte as the story went on, but while I also like Harrison he did bother me sometimes with how he read Charlotte the wrong way at times. Misunderstandings stand between these two and trouble stirs around bullies as bad guys! Bringing these two together took some doing let me tell you! :) But it all comes together in a highly satisfying story!

*I requested and received this book in a collection from Bethany House for the purpose of reviewing it. This in no way affected my opinion and the above are my true thoughts and feelings about Engaging the Competition. ~ASC
Very good read. Harrison was charming and Charlie was adorable. Charlie is a tomboy yet she has girlish emotions and really has no idea what to do with them. Harrison is so caught up in his past hurt and perceived shortcomings, he is unable to see the good intentions of others. Together they are quite a pair, and I truly enjoyed getting to know them!
Really cute story with an unlikely hero and heroine. It was a fast read that kept me intrigued. This adorable couple will put a smile on a face and happiness in your heart. I highly recommend!!
Engaging the Competition by Melissa Jagears THIS STORY WAS SO CUTE! I think I've only read one other story where the hero wore eyeglasses. When his eyeglasses get broken he has to rely on the heroine and what ensues is just plain heartwarming. This was also cute for the reason that they were friends when they were young. She, the future rancher, he, the future teacher.
*I read this novella as a part of the With This Ring collection.
I did not enjoy this story very much. Kept picturing the heroine as Doris Day for some reason. Just really didn't get captured up in the story and the way things played out in the storm cellar and the fact that neither of them had any idea about the others feelings. I don't know, I did like the characters, just not the way the plot panned out. Not my "cup of tea" I guess.
This is a novella of the teaville moral society... I am in the middle of the rest of the series. This was a very well written story and I loved it. I just wish that it would have been a little longer. So if you want a well written series that takes place in the early 1900's that is clean and sweet historical romance then this is a set for you.
My least favorite of the bunch in the "With This Ring?" collection. I like my men stronger than my women, and didn't feel like that was the case here. She was overbearing and his eyeglasses/eyesight was just a major distraction the entire book.
3.5 stars actually. Liked the enough to check out the next one in the series. I think all the characters in this books were so quirky you needed a much longer novel to actually get to know them better. The only somewhat normal person was Lydia, main character of the next in the series.
I thoroughly enjoyed Engaging The Competition. Melissa Jagears has a knack for coming up with original, believable characters. I only wish it was longer
From friends, to strangers, to competitors. Can they ever truly be lovers? Melissa writes a laugh out loud story that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
I am relatively new to Melissa Jagears, having only read 2 books of hers, but I am coming to realize as I read more that I really enjoy her books, which means she will probably get the honors of going on my list of 'Favorite Historical Christian Authors'. Quite an honor if I must say. I find that her stories are interesting and her characters are very engaging.
Even though this was a quicky - less than 100 pages -, I still enjoyed it very much. I liked how our hero and heroine knew each other since they were children. Harrison has had a crush on Charlie for quite some time but she tends to rub him the wrong way, always having to be the best at everything. What he doesn't know is, is that Charlie has a crush on him as well, always hoping that someday he would notice her in a new light, but since they send each other mixed signals over the years, that never happens. Harrison hasn't had a proper conversation with Charlie for 7 years, ever since she bested him at a shooting competition with his gun, which she never intended to do, she was just testing out his gun - she's a tom boy, loves all things 'non frilly'. Harrison ends up getting stuck at Charlies place when a storm comes rolling in. Being confined in close quarters in her cellar, their 'crush' feelings start to return to them. Charlie ends up having to help him out teaching since his glasses were destroyed during the storm and he can't hardly see a thing without them. By helping him out with his teaching, their feelings for each other grows. Eventually they break down and confess to each other their feelings for one another. And since this is a romance, you can guess the rest as romance books always ends with a happy ending.
At the end of this book, it gives a preview of book #1 in the Teaville Moral Society, which I can't wait to read. The hero, Mr Lowe sounded a mite grumpy, and who doesn't love a grumpy hero - who possibly - turns sweet on the heroine?
I absolutely loved the story of Charlotte "Charlie" Andrews and Harrison Gray! These two characters were so much fun! Charlie is a die hard tomboy, and Harrison is a bookworm. Charlie runs her family's ranch, and Harrison is a school teacher. These two have known each other since they were kids. Not only are they polar opposites, they've also been rivals for years. An unfortunate accident occurs which results in Charlie having to work with Harrison until the situation gets resolved. Trust me when I say this situation results in never a dull moment for Charlie and Harrison.
I really enjoyed the interactions between the two main characters. I also loved how the story evolved in that they had known each other for so long yet they didn't really know each other. It was fun just seeing how their discoveries about each other added to their budding relationship.
Engaging the Competition is part of the book With This Ring? which includes three other fun and entertaining stories by authors Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connealy, and Regina Jennings. Although Engaging the Competition is a short story, it doesn't compromise the character developments or the plot. The author, Melissa Jagears, does a wonderful job of pacing it just right, so that it never feels rushed or lacking. All in all, Engaging the Competition is an absolutely delightful story!
