National Bestseller Finalist for the Speaker’s Book Award Dillon Hillier, a corporal with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, returned home from a tour in Afghanistan and started up a normal life. But when ISIS insurgents began attacking local populations in Iraq and elsewhere, Hillier, a long-time soldier, felt he had to join in the action, so he sold his truck, lied to his parents about where he was going and became the first Canadian to volunteer to fight ISIS in Iraq For three months, Dillon accompanied the Kurdish army as they fought a series of battles against the Islamic State throughout northern Iraq. During his mission, Dillon saw combat, experienced life in the trenches, partnered with a former US Marine, had a bounty placed on his head and learned an important that in the chaos of war, the difference between life and death is measured in inches, and some things can never be forgotten. One Soldier  is about Hillier’s three months fighting with the Kurds in Iraq, on the front lines. The only reason Dillon’s tour wasn’t longer was because the government wanted him back home, safe and sound.

A very real look at the front lines of the fight against ISIS, from the mouth of a Canadian veteran. The writing is direct, without all of the subtlety and polishing of more accomplished writers. This lends authenticity to the story. The descriptions of people and events capture very real thoughts and emotions, and provide excellent insight into what it would be like to be on the front lines against ISIS, as well as to live in an area that constantly sees war and political uncertainty. Whether or not you agree with his thoughts and conclusions, the experience of Dillon Hillier in Kurdistan is a story well worth reading and will keep you enthralled from first to last.

A really interesting account of the situation of the lured against the Islamic state. I got a bit perturbed when he added his opinions into the story like his political views, opinions about women in combat or his inability to understand why people would see things differently from him.

A great read! It flows almost like an action movie without the refined edges of a professional writer. His thoughts and experiences are conveyed in a direct manner, and it grabs you and doesn't let you go until you finish it. This book is an excellent look into an ongoing war between Islamic State and the Kurds.

Some insight into the fight against ISIS but in a small area and does not discuss the situation as a whole.

Interesting story - but with a lot of autobiographical works the writing is not top notch and it hurts the book
