Being married to a celebrity isn't all it's cracked up to be, especially when that celebrity has a very public affair with his co-star…
Alice McBride is determined that the one thing she won't lose in her marriage breakup is Borne Manor, her beloved home, but she gets more than she bargained for when she rents it out for the summer and a sexy cowboy comes to stay.
Country music star Robinson Duff has had his own share of heartbreak and needs somewhere quiet to hide out for the summer. Neither Alice nor Robinson are in any position for romance; the timing is terrible and they're both rebounding like out of control frisbees.
Can a holiday romance help mend their broken hearts. Or will it just make things even worse when the long hot summer comes to its inevitable end?
Kat French absolutely bowls it out of the park again with her latest offering, One Hot Summer, I have adored each and every one of this authors 'Chick-Lit' offerings and Alice McBride’s story is no exception.
Once again Kat has managed to pull together an endearing cast of eclectic secondary characters, as well as two extremely likeable main ones.
"Naked painters and porn star neighbors. And there was I thinking this place was going to be dull."
Alice having been publicly humiliated by her toad of an actor husband, finds herself in dire straits when she realizes that she is at risk of losing her beloved Borne Manor to the bank, in an effort to alleviate some of the financial strain she rents the property out for the summer. And takes to living in an old Airstream trailer in the garden.
Initially she has no idea that Robinson Duff, is more than just your run-of-the-mill cowboy, but it doesn’t take long for the rest of her quirky tenants to fill her in on exactly who he is. After a rocky start a strong attraction builds between them.
This story had so many layers to it, and around the building of Robinson and Alice’s relationship, you get to meet and to know the rest of the people that Alice has in her life, Niamh; best-friend and local artist, Stewie; ex-porn star and wig aficionado, and practicing with Hazel to name but a few. It was almost like reading a Richard Curtis movie in that everything is quite light-hearted, but when the feels come they are for the right things and at the right points in the story.
I think this author excels in books of this genre, I wish there were more of them and that they were released at more regular intervals, but I suppose the wait is worthwhile, because you get such a high quality, classy read every time, and I think this is probably because of the time and care that has been taken into getting everything 'just right'.
ARC generously provided via Netgalley, and it was my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.
I meant to have written this review up in the summer and just bypassed it by mistake.
I enjoyed the freshness of this genre as a change from my usual deep thrillers, but, the spark between the two main characters seemed to have got lost along the way.
Yet I fully get why it was slow with them connecting as they were both out of previous relationships and both still hankering after their ex. That didn’t help!
I love Kat French. There are actually very few books that I'd give more than five stars to if I could and One Hot Summer is up there as one of them. It's the most perfect of summer reads with romance, hilarity, just the right amount of drama and a wonderful couple supported by a gaggle of eccentric, nutty and completely loveable characters. It hit every single spot.
Alice is a character you can't help but fall in love with; private, sweet-natured and determined, she's lonely and hurting despite her friends rallying round her. And Robinson is the same; a little bit lost, he craves some privacy away from the limelight to regroup and come to terms with the fact that he caught his wife shagging his best friend. Their friendship, banter, disagreements and blossoming relationship held me captive from the moment I picked this, right up until I flicked the final page.
This review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the fabulous cast of secondary characters who brought tears of laughter with their shenanigans and quirky, fun personalities; they're crackers, they complete the story and I fell in love them as much as Robinson and Alice.
"Go back to your magnificent cowboy willy."
Kat French has a true gift when it comes to creating a light, sigh-inducing romantic comedy which brings giggles, emotion that will leave a tear in your eye and everything in between. One Hot Summer is an absolute gem and a joy to read.

Pues me he llevado una grata sorpresa. Recomendable.
Initially I wanted to give this book 5 stars but it ended up being only 3 stars…
Why?
This was supposed to be a romance book but the author focused too much on the side characters than the actual love story. I would have wanted to read more cute scenes of Alice and Robinson together but instead we always got a small cute scene and then a full chapter dedicated on the side characters instead. The author tried to give this neighborhood a “crazy” vibe but sometimes it was just too forced and it came out to be more like this: “Hey guys, see how “crazy and weird” we are?! We are definitely so exceptional and crazy” The little few times where we got Alice & Robinson scenes, it always included sex. Either they were having sex or Robinson was making side comments that he wants to “undress” Alice. (Dear authors, I BEG you all to realize that when we say we want ROMANTIC scenes, it doesn’t include just sex…) By the time Robinson went back to the US, the book went downhill… we didn’t get many Alice & Robinson scenes anyway so at this point I knew we wouldn’t get any more until the end of the book so it was just sooo boring and it dragged out too much that I didn’t even wanted to pick up the book anymore.
By the time I finished this book I was left dissatisfied, like something was just missing the whole time… (the romance in the romance book is missing)
This was the perfect antidote to my previous full on human misery novel.
'One Hot Summer' is a cute novel about two very different people from two different parts of the world, who are both recently separated from their respective partners.
Alice McBride is English, blonde and demure. Robinson Duff is a country music star from the USA. He seeks refuge from his crazy star life and ends up in Alice's manor which she has to now rent because she can't afford the repayments.
Kat French is a very skilled writer, who does characterization, descriptions, and romantic moments really well.
While I am not big on country music anything, I didn't have any issues with our male hero, who was truly charming and all that. A bit too perfect, but let's face it, we don't read romance for its life like qualities.
'One Hot Summer' i> was enjoyable, albeit somewhat formulaic (I know, it's romance!) in that it had the quirky, eccentric best friend and neighbours and the over-bearing exes. I had trouble suspending my disbelief a couple of times, but there wasn't anything too dramatic, just my brain going all logical and logistical.
Overall, it was pleasant enough, but not great. But I do look forward to reading Kat French's next novel.
3.5 stars
I've received this novel via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to the publishers, Avon, for the opportunity to read and review this novel.
"One hot summer" sounded like a very entertaining read and I expected lots of summer feeling.
I have to say that I had some trouble getting into the story and I had sone difficulties telling the characters apart. I also couldn't really connect with Alice and Robinson. They did had some chemistry though and the book was more sizzling than I expected.
The summer setting didn't come through that much and there were a lot more possibilities to create a summery atmosphere.
All in all it was an entertaining and light read but I expected a little bit more.
This book hit the spot on my craving for some funny but sexy story!
Kat French has done it again. She has a talent for connecting her beloved characters to her beloved readers and I can’t describe my state after reading this other than happy.
I connected with Alice and Robinson so quickly I laughed out loud throughout the book at how genuinely happy and passionate I felt for them.
As for the rest of the characters, particularly Alice’s squad, I. LOVED. THEM. They were goofy and glorious, I love each and everyone of them.
This book was incredibly fast paced and I feel the euphoria coursing through my veins after finishing this.
Witty, wonderful and Wise are the words I would choose to desricbe Kat French’s novels and I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for me!
Okay here's a fact for you. I read a LOT of books, maybe not as much as some but certainly more than your average reader. Yes my preference is Crime, Thriller or Mystery but you need to break it up and I love nothing more than a good ol' romantic fiction, especially if it's funny. It's why I'm a huge fan of people like Sue Watson. However, I admit when I started to read this and saw the cover I didn't bother with the synopsis as I figured it would be 'par for the course' in this genre. Oh my, how wrong can one person be. Have you even been in a good old fashioned greasy spoon, and by the time you have finished your meal you are convinced it should be Michelin starred? Well, that's kind of what happened to me with this book!
Alice McBride and her husband Brad start the opening chapters of this book and we see Alice sling Brad out of her beautiful marital home Borne Manor due to his wandering hands. So far so normal, except even at this point there was just something about the characters and the setting. It was so easy to read and Alice was just so normal and likeable. Seeing as her husband Brad is a reasonably well known Actor, her split is not easy and as she is recovering from it all she realises that she refuses to lose her home, so decides on a Summer Rental.
Enter Robinson Duff, the country music star that's had his own share of heartbreak and is getting away from it all. Now I know that so far it seems like your ordinary romantic comedy but believe me it is SO much more. The additional characters which make up the village cast had me howling at times. It contains naked painters, ex porn stars and practising witches are just the tip of the iceberg. Now don't get me wrong it's predictable to a point, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Kat French has created the man of (I would have thought) every girl's dream. I am convinced that if women created men and they were made like Robinson Duff, the world would be an easy place to live in!
If you want some fluffy, romantic, amazing writing and eye watering funny scenes then look no further. I haven't enjoyed a book this much since I first discovered Sue Watson's (in particular Love Lies and Lemon Cake). It is the perfect remedy to reading too much crime, a depressingly bleak British Summer and the drudge of every day life. Everything you could want and more in a book of this type and I think many will LOVE it. I know I certainly did and I will be eagerly scouring Amazon for when her next book is due. It's official, I am now a Kat French Fan Girl!!!
Book Review - One Hot Summer by Kat French - 5 Perfect Beach Read Stars
Some books are just destined to liven up your holidays, and this one from the lovely KittyKat really hits the spot.
When Alice McBride finds her hubby has been playing more than make believe with a co-star, she throws him out. But how will she manage to hang on to her beloved Borne Manor, when she doesn’t have nearly enough money to afford it on her own?
Easy - she rents it out for the summer, whilst renovating the rest of the site to produce enough rent to keep her head above water. The only trouble is - Robinson Duff, troubled country music star has rented the house, and he doesn’t want people anywhere around it.
It’s annoying enough that the blonde pixie lives in a caravan at the bottom of his garden. But if he became aware of Alice’s plans for the site, then our crotchety cowboy would get even grumpier.
Ah what can I tell you without ruining the book. Kat has such a way of weaving the story so that you feel that you are there, experiencing it. Every piece that was added to the site, I loved and wanted to delve into the pages and go look inside (and maybe live there, especially the romany caravan - throwback to the family genes.)
I love that none of Kitty hero’s are ever perfect - they are the epitomy of flawed but sexy man. Robinson was no exception. One minute he was damn rude, the next you were finding yourself won over by him again.
Once again, there are some wonderful side characters that absolutely bring this book to the top rung of the ladder. My how I cried with laughter at some of the antics of the residents on site. I really am going to tell you no more than that, you have to experience the lunacy for yourself.
If you are looking for a great, feel good book with lots of laugh out loud moments and a few sexy ones thrown amongst them, then this is the book for you. I recommend a sunlounger, a cocktail and someone who looks like Skarsgard to massage suntan lotion into your back whilst you read.
Kat French can do no wrong in my eyes! When I first read the blurb I was sure I was never going to fall in love with a cowboy called Robinson, but my god did I! I completely fell in love with not just him but the entire village and inhabitants of Borne. Alice is so adorable. I'll be buying this is paperback too so I can re-read whenever I need a pick me up.
So I went on holiday last week and left my bloody kindle on the airplane.....bugger. How was I going to survive on holiday with my two little boys, for a week with no kindle....okay so I had my iPad but you can’t read a book on an iPad whilst lying in the sun by a pool....bugger....I know I’ll visit the hotel reception and just pray they’ve got some half decent books left behind by fellow holidayers...
.and as luck would have it they did....a whole bookcase full....yipee....oh bollocks....most of them are in German..(nothing against German books it’s just I don’t speak the lingo).....
so I’m sat rifling through all these books and I spot one right at the back.....looks English.....Hallelujah yes it’s in English....someone called Kat French.....actually I’m sure I’ve heard of her, perhaps spotted her name on goodreads.....never read her though...,oh well blurb reads well...and to be honest she is my only option....it’s her or I’m going to have to lay by the pool reading my kids beano comics all week....so let’s hope this isn’t too crappy....can’t be doing with light hearted, insta-love rubbish.
....AND FAST FORWARD A FEW DAYS.....well bloody hell I just found my new favourite author...no joke, in fact it’s like a weird fate thing as I was really stuck in a book rut and by losing my beloved kindle it meant I had to pick up an “Actual paper book” by an author who turned out to be flipping fab...
...no insta love here, no corny rehashed love story, no completely unnecessary angst...no annoying heroines....this was really funny, highly gripping and with characters you couldn’t help but love....there was even actual sex in it....believable, hot, page turning sex....not just the clothes off, lights out...and then they woke up malarky.
So as luck would have it I picked up a cracker and I can’t wait to read more.....oh and I got my kindle back from airline to....happy days!!!!
One Hot Summer is the perfect beach read, imagine lying on a sun lounger slipping cocktails and reading about a hot cowboy who goes by the name of Robinson Duff see I told you it was perfect !!!!! Alice McBride has just discovered that the husband that she has stood by through thick and thin has cheated on her with his on screen co star. Alice now has to pick herself up and start anew but with money now a little tight firstly she has to think of a way to hold on to her beloved manor, the place where she thought she would see her family born and grow is under threat of being sold, so Alice comes up with a plan to save her home - rent it out for the summer - enter hot, American, country singer and cowboy, Robinson Duff what starts of as a business arrangement quickly develops into a hot holiday romance but what happens when then sun sets and the air gets chilly ? Can fairy tales really come true ? May be they can in this spell binding summer read. Got to admit that I love anything and everything that Kat/ Kitty writes, I'd just finished reading a rather angsty series so this read was perfect it was British chick lit at its very very best, it reminded me that I love these kinda books, it's not all about the sex, it's about relationships and not only Alice and Robinson there's a whole village to get to know and you will love them all wigs and all !!!!!
Thank you to Net Galley for a copy of this book! Have absolutely loved this! Could not put it down! Chic lit at its best! Loved all the characters (apart from the obvious ones hehe) Did not want it to end!
A nice light summer read, a typical love story which I haven't read for a while. I don't know why it says it's a laugh out loud story, there were only a few pages that caught me doing that. I loved the weird group of Mis matched neighbours, how could you not love them and all things English!!
My second Kat French book after only just finding her, I really loved this. A lovely setting with fab characters who I found I cared about. Read during a hot summer here in England, it was pretty topical. Thoroughly recommended.
The first thing that came to mind after reading a few chapters was how on earth does this author’s imagination work! Even though she’s goes beyond the ridiculous with the development of her characters' personalities, getting to know their quirky traits was an exceedingly good treat. All of them fitted like a glove in a plot which is to say the least, quintessentially English, and we couldn’t help but laugh our socks off at their antics.
Then meeting the leading man from across the pond just seemed to add extra hot spice to what was for us, more like a film script than a book. And of course, the scenery. Alice's setting is surrounded by an English garden and breath-taking countryside, Borne manor was an absolute pleasure to stroll around considering we weren’t even there. Nevertheless, it most certainly felt like it!
"I don't suppose this place has a drawbridge hidden around somewhere to pull up in case of emergency?" "Fraid not, cowboy. No moat either."
How very easy it was envisaging this English rose trotting across her garden in red wellies to her new place of abode. She’s making the best of a bad situation and not doing too badly at all. For that, we had to take our hats off to her. We could honestly hear her thinking out loud; how she was going to fight to save what she loved and become her own person after being totally disillusioned by whom she thought was the love of her life.
"This house was never Brad's dream. It was always mine. We didn't get to make that many good memories here in the end."
You’re most likely aware that us Brits have a daily obsession with the weather and is cause for much conversation. Hot summers are atypical for us so regardless of whether meteorological predictions are in our favour or not, we strip off at the hint of this special word; sunshine! Figuratively speaking, the temperatures go up when a gorgeous six-foot-something cowboy in brackets walks into the scenario.
"And then there's you, all blonde hair and rosy cheeks, living in my garden like a pixie."
Alice isn’t the only one trying to cool down! Does she let her golden locks down, take her booties off, and does he disrobe to show us his glorious offerings? Grab your fans ‘cause you’ll need them.
"Straight from talking about the weather to talking about sex. Slow down cowboy."
Laugh out loud… poor Robinson Duff wants peace and quiet, wants time to get his act together, come to terms with the past and ignore his upcoming obligations. Wary of everybody, he is. Nevertheless, little does he know what he’s let himself in for. We can’t put into words how much we connected to him. He’s grumpy, peeved off with life in general, but attentive when he comes round. Smile folks. Although our hearts went out to him, Alice’s neighbours will bring out the best in him. And maybe that English rose who he has put his trust in has the formula to convince him that all is not lost or as grim as he thinks.
"Out with it, Goldilocks. There's something on your mind. Tell me what it is."
We have to mention that if there were ever anyone’s sensitivity underlined in a read of this calibre, who had her head well-placed on her shoulders, it has to be Alice. She eventually finds her outlet which is a twist and a half in this story, too. We had to agree with her and couldn't have been more pleased that she did what she did.
"For a girl with such slender shoulders, you sure have a lot resting on them."
Grinning from ear to ear is guaranteed. So much so that our personal messages actually gave us jaw ache. Why? Simply because the secondary characters in this theatrical play, and that is exactly what this book is, left both of us enchanted with this tight-knit group of friends. Never, ever will you be able to imagine how an ex porn star wears his peculiar accessories in such a ludicrous manner, how a so-called witch conjures up magical potions or how a bird mimics secrets and swears like a trooper. Not forgetting to mention Alice's bizarre bestie, Niamh, who's a dab hand with a brush and doesn't want to miss out on the tiniest bit of gossip.
“Filthy buggers.”
Apart from the humorous scenes which flow like the River Seven through the valley of Shropshire, this read has a moral story to tell. What we loved more than anything was the comradeship. The acceptance of whoever you are, whatever weird and wonderful ways you choose to live, your respect and love at the end of the day, conquers.
Gripping from the first page until a finale which you really have to find out for yourselves, what more can we say other than Bravo!
Alice has been married to Brad for five years. When they first met he was a struggling actor but things have progressed in his career and he is now hot property. This also means that the paparazzi like to take an active interest in his life, which is how his extra marital affair is exposed, not just to the world but his wife Alice. Needless to say, this abruptly puts an end to their marriage and Alice is now going it alone at the beautiful country manor they had recently acquired. Problem is, she can’t really afford the cost of running a large manor so decides to rent it out in a bid to keep her head above ground.
So let’s meet the new tenant…. Country music star Robinson Duff has run away from home. He too has recently had a marriage breakdown and has really been feeling the pressure lately, in fact it has overwhelmed him so much he decided to leave the US and fly to the other side of the world for some much needed down time. A peaceful country manor in a small town is just the place to switch off from the world, recharge and maybe even write a few new songs.
Alice now resides in a retro caravan at the bottom of the extensive gardens at Borne Manor, this ensures her new tenant retains his privacy but she is still able to live on site, in the place that she loves. There are also several tenants who rent cottages from her on the manor grounds and they are a very colourful bunch. They have been there for her since her break up with Brad and she counts them as her closest friends.
Robinson doesn’t know what to make of Alice and her quirky circle of friends but the more time he spends with Alice the more he seems to be fighting feelings of attraction to this sweet English rose. Maybe a friend’s with benefits summer fling could be just the thing to sooth the pain, for both of them are still in love with other people so the only thing they have to offer each other is something physical. Hot steamy sex with no strings turns out to be a great idea and it slowly eats away at all the hurt and pain they had been harbouring.
All good things must come to an end though and summer is winding down fast. Alice has plans she wants to see through and Robinson has a tour committment Why does the thought of being separated hurt more than it should though? They both knew it was only a bit of short term fun so why does Alice feel like she can’t breath without Robinson in her life now?
This was a great holiday read for me. I love stories set in England and could just picture in my mind so clearly what the manor would look like and the scent of the gardens. A really sweet story.
If you are looking for a lovely romance with a sexy cowboy this summer, look no further than One Hot Summer. This is a sweet but steamy story of Alice and Robinson, with a fantastic cast of characters.
In fact its the sheer absurdness of the rest of the main characters in the Borne Manor, that really captured my heart, from a bird that screams obscenities, to an ex-porn star with his wig collection, and the local witch who does accidentally slip a love potion to Alice and Robinson. There is also the witch's son, and Alice's best friend.
They are a close knit community and really take Robinson to their hearts, when he arrives to rent Borne Manor from Alice, while she lives in a caravan at the bottom of the garden. They both have things in common in their recent romantic pasts, and slowly it becomes apparent that there is something between them too.
The title One Hot Summer does not just apply to the weather in this summery book, but also the heat level of the holiday romance between a cowboy and the pixie at the bottom of his garden. They are smoking together, and its a pleasure to read on a cold day, as they really warmed me up.
One Hot Summer is a pleasant and enjoyable way to while away some time, unfortunately not my favourite book by this author, but still a perfectly good story.
Thank you to Avon and Netgalley for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed One Hot Summer. It was such an easy going read as it followed Alice's story. Cheated on by her husband and left alone on the Manor House, Alice was prepared to do anything to ensure she could keep the Manor House including renting out the house and trying to set up a glamping business in the grounds.
Enter Robinson Duff, an all American country music star who, following his own heartbreak had travelled to England and rented the manor for six months.
The book follows Alice and Robinson as they embark on a summer romance. Will it heal their hearts or can they make things with between them?
This book is an enjoyable read. Perfect for the summer.
Stop everything..buy this book and enjoy something romantic and entertaining. Now you will have to translate the English from England but it's so charming to the English countryside and to show how foreign and away Robinson could be.
The manor characters were a total delight. I read during my breakfast and felt my hand touch my mouth in silent wonderment of the fun that this book was.
The sexy times were not graphic. I'm old enough to appreciate sexy times but do not need words to become a sex manual. Just knowing they were sated was enough. I look forward to many more books by this talented author.
The romance between Alice and Robinson was a little ridiculous. A classic rebound relationship that claimed to be between two people who were pining after their spouses. However jumped into bed in a flash. Too much reliance on sex and little else to them. If the book had only been this it would be a 2 at best. However I loved the supporting cast of characters. The crazy bunch that live in the cottages of Borne Manner were so much fun they are the reason I finished this book and gave it an extra star.
