For her exciting debut in hardcover, New York Times bestselling author Karen Rose delivers a heart-stopping suspense novel that picks up where DIE FOR ME left off, with a detective determined to track down a brutal murderer.
Special Agent Daniel Vartanian has sworn to find the perpetrator of multiple killings that mimic a 13-year-old murder linked to a collection of photographs that belonged to his brother, Simon, the ruthless serial killer who met his demise in DIE FOR ME. Daniel is certain that someone even more depraved than his brother committed these crimes, and he's determined to bring the current murderer to justice and solve the mysterious crime from years ago.
With only a handful of images as a lead, Daniel's search will lead him back through the dark past of his own family, and into the realm of a mind more sinister than he could ever imagine. But his quest will also draw him to Alex Fallon, a beautiful nurse whose troubled past reflects his own. As Daniel becomes attached to Alex, he discovers that she is also the object of the obsessed murderer. Soon, he will not only be racing to discover the identity of this macabre criminal, but also to save the life of the woman he has begun to love.

Secrets, secrets and more secrets. A bit overly intricate at times, but yet another fine book in the Philly/Atlanta sub-series. FBI agent Daniel Vartanian has recently been involved with the hunting down and killing of a deadly serial killer in Die For Me, a killer who also managed to kill people close to Daniel! In a town not too far from his home town, murdered woman keep turning up and everything is pointing to something in not only his town, not only the dead serial killer, but both towns' pasts. Secrets, conspiracies and years of silence are undone through the course of the case where a 'whistleblower' decides to whistle blow by murder!!! An improved Three Star, 6 out of 12 on my second read. 2025 and 2011 read
Georgia Special Agent Daniel Vartanian is haunted by the discovery he made when his brother, Simon, was killed and a chilling murder has him back in his hometown of Dutton, Georgia. ER nurse Alexandra (Alex) Fallon gets a call from a Georgia social worker, notifying her that her surrogate stepsister is missing and she needs to come get her 4-year old daughter. You just know all this will collide, connect and hopefully make sense at some point. And, the journey there will be harrowing.
There's a LOT going on in this story with at least three separate and distinct mysteries in play. Daniel is exceptional as he has to face his past, confront the present and imagine his future when he meets Alex for the first time and as he works the cases. She's not been back to Dutton since her traumatic childhood ended in disaster and I loved how the two of them dealt with the cases and their histories as a couple. Their romance was simply wonderful and I fell for both of them.
This was definitely a thrilling and bumpy ride. There are so many creepy people in this town and everyone seems like they've got something to hide. The "serial" killer is identified right up front so there's no mystery there. What is a puzzle is why he's doing what he's doing and the reasons for his choice of victims. Just when you think you've nailed it, he throws you another curve.
Karen Rose continues to reign, at least in my mind, as the Queen of the romantic suspense genre. This series is extraordinary and this story unsettled me (in a good, reading way). I struggle with wanting to just sit down and binge read my way through the series but have decided to take my time, savoring each book and enjoying the reading trek. I strongly recommend reading the series in order as resolutions to previous cases are often discussed in subsequent books and many of the characters are connected throughout.
Oh, this is going to be difficult describing this book, because there are so many characters to keep straight, and so many twists and turns, that sometimes it was downright confusing! But if you can hang in there for about the first 100 pages, things start to make sense, everything falls into place and things get rolling, and by then this book was un-put-downable!
This is a story about disfunctional families, betrayal, guilt, and regrets. It seems that every character in this story had regrets or guilt about something they had done or had failed to do.
The chief 'regretter' was Special Agent Daniel Vartanian of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who was first introduced in Karen Rose's previous book, "Die For Me". Daniel was the brother of the villain of that book, serial killer Simon Vartanian, who met his demise one week before this story begins.
Daniel is still getting over the drama suurounding Simon's death and is barely back at work, when he starts investigating what appears to be copycat murders of a crime that took place 13 years ago in his hometown of Dutton, Georgia. Daniel is still feeling guilty over what he knew about his brother Simon and how his father, a prominent judge, helped cover up Simon's past crimes. He regrets that he didn't come forward sooner to the authorities and tell all he knew about Simon. But now there is a new murderer on the loose, and these murders are linked to something sinister that Simon was involved with in his youth. Daniel vows to find the culprit, and nothing will stop him, even if he has to face the demons of the past that continue to haunt him.
While investigating the crimes, he falls for Alex Fallon, a beautiful nurse with a link to one of the victims from 13 years ago. Alex has a dark past filled with regrets, not unlike Daniel. Alex is in Georgia because her step-sister Bailey has gone missing, and she's looking after Hope, her traumatized 4 yr. old niece. Has Hope witnessed something that led to her mother's disappearance? Is Bailey a victim of this new copycat murderer? And how do the prominent citizens of this small Georgia town factor in to the murders? How many secrets and lies can Daniel uncover before it's too late and his and Alex's life are threatened?
As I was reading this book I kept thinking, 'Oh, this would make a good movie!'--it had so many twists and turns and would make a great thriller! If you like a good suspense book that really makes you think, with a touch of hot, steamy romance thrown in, then this is your book! My only complaint was that there wasn't enough of the romantic scenes between Daniel and Alex! But when Karen Rose put them together, they were steamy! She can really steam up the pages--she just needs to give you more! I had no problems with the plot or the suspense aspect of the book--both were first rate! She dropped just enough hints to keep you guessing, but not quite enough for you to figure out who the ultimate villain was (there actually was more than one)! And, she left the door wide open for a continuation of the story, which looks to be about Daniel's sister Susannah, and his fellow agent, Luke. That is a book I will be looking forward to reading! All in all, another top notch effort by Karen Rose!
When I started Scream for me by Karen Rose, I didn’t know I was in for a nerve-racking, nail-biting read from start to finish. The fast paced storyline and interesting dialog kept me on the edge of my seat. I read through this book quickly without being able to put it down for long intervals of time, so I neglected things like walking the dog and much needed sleep…but it was well worth it because I HAD to see how it ended!
Alex Fallon’s life has been filled with sorrow and death. Thirteen years ago, her twin sister was raped and murdered. Her mother not being able to handle the brutal death and loss of her daughter, commits suicide soon after. When her Aunt insists she move to Ohio with her, she is forced to leave her hometown in Dutton, Georgia, and her step-sister Bailey behind, to escape the horrible loss of her loved ones.
When Alex gets a surprising phone call from social services informing her that Bailey has disappeared, and has left her four year old daughter, Hope alone, she is stunned. Knowing that Bailey is incapable of leaving Hope behind, unless something is terribly wrong, Alex immediately returns to Dutton, and the memories she has tried to evade all of these years. She finds Hope traumatized and in shock. Since she is incapable of talking, Bailey’s disappearance becomes a mystery and a race against time to solve.
Special Agent Daniel Vartanian has just returned from a two week leave of absence. His brother was linked to have murdered seventeen people, including his parents. He is given the assignment to investigate the murder and rape of a woman from the town of Arcadia, Georgia. When his investigation leads him to Dutton, he finds some startling similarities between his case, and the murder of Alex’s sister years ago.
When Daniel and Alex meet, they realize that they are both desperately trying to find the answers to hunting down the killer, and solving the disappearance of Bailey. As they continue to work together, and Alex’s life becomes in jeopardy, they are both drawn into a web of mystery, danger and a love that neither were looking for.
I found that both Daniel and Alex both complex characters and the development of their relationship was very intriguing to read. Both have their demons they must deal with, but they come together as a team, and fight the good fight. This is not a book you can skip through. It can be quite complex and very intense at times. Although, I believe that Scream for Me can be read as a stand alone book, there are a lot of references to the previous book in the series, Die For Me that might not be completely understood without reading it first.

“You deal with the bitch, I’ll deal with the ditch.”
Suspenseful thriller, raunchy sex scenes, steamy romance and murder- Sign me up! If you like any, or all, this book is for you. I've read quite a few novels by Karen Rose now and she never ever disappoints in the thriller or the romance department. She intertwines the two so perfectly- it doesn't feel forced, it has a good pace which will keep you guessing and so many twists you will not see coming. She has such a knack for writing that i started this last night before bed, only planning to read a few chapters, and ended up being up till 4am almost finishing it in one sitting. Her writing, her characters, the twists and turns and the romance, dig in there hooks and don't want to let you go, or maybe it was me who didn't want to let go. Either way, Karen's writing is so gripping, thought provoking and so god damn good! Alex Fallon's family fell apart thirteen years ago, her twin sister Alicia was murdered and dumped naked in a ditch, she found her mother dead by a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and Alex ended up taking a bottle of pills to numb the pain and almost joined them. Shortly after leaving hosptial her life was uproot from Dutton,Georgia and moved in with her mother's sister, her husband and her cousin Bailey. Now thirteen years later, Alex still struggles with what happened all those years ago, the screaming in her head comes on suddenly, especially when she starts having a panic attack. When Bailey is reported missing and her child Hope is found hiding alone in the closet in a house that's more like a dump, most think she has turned back to drugs and has abandoned her daughter- but not Alex. Determined to look after Hope, and find the missing Bailey, Alex makes the decision to go back to Dutton Georgia, the place that still haunts her still. What she doesn't know is that someone was just killed and dumped along a Dutton highway, naked and wrapped in a blanket just like her sister all those years ago. Special Agent Daniel Vartanian is on the case, only a week after he had to bury his parents and his long thought dead brother and serial killer, Simon Vartanian- (Die for me- Karen Rose). Daniel has come back with secrets, he has come back with pain and guilt, but nothing will stop him from getting justice of those who commit such horrific crimes like his brother had. One secret of his now dead brother may just play a key role in the case before him now, what did Simon have to do with the dumped girl if he was already dead? Why is this starting again now? How many more bodies will there be before he can link everything together and bring the killer to justice?
Okay so let me start by saying, i love Daniel Vartanian! He is such a strong character in both Die for Me and Scream for Me, and i love how Karen connects her books like this. To learn about a character you must read the other books they are in, you get such a bigger picture on what is really going on , the pain they have or haven't suffered, their life, who they really are. It makes for a great reading experience, it feels almost like an adventure through the series, and i cannot wait until a character i already know turns up in another book. Not that you cannot understand their character by just reading one, but the reading experience is so much more when you read it in order. The stories all connect and there is so much more to be seen. Anyway back to Daniel, he is smart, handsome, caring and such a great investigator. His story, and i mean from both Die for Me and Scream for Me is quite heartbreaking, shocking and builds him into who he is, the smart , caring special investigator who will go to many lengths to seek justice. I'm not going to go into the romance to much, because i dont want to give anything away here, but its there, and its mega steamy. It always is in Karen's books. How she manages to add a solid steamy romance amongst all the murder and mystery is amazing! I dont know what i prefer more, the raunchy scenes or the mystery and murder aspect in her novels.
Another one to add to the favourites pile! Recommended for: Romance/ Thriller/ Suspense/ Mystery
First off...great book. Loved it. Secondly...damnit it! I don't want to wait almost a year for the continuation of the series!
Once I started reading Scream For Me I couldn't put it down. From the first page I was hooked on the story. It doesn't have the pulse-pounding, dark intensity and creepiness that Die For Me had, but the storyline is very engaging. I spent the whole book sorting through the details, trying to put the pieces together and figure out who did what and when and why. Rose kept me into the story for the entire book. When the end rolled around, I was still just as interested as I was in the beginning and even though I'd figured out a lot of the plot there were still a few surprises.
Scream For Me isn't meant for a quick or casual read, though. It's got a lot of characters, a lot of bit and pieces. If you're not paying attention, not fully engaged in reading it, I can imagine it would be easy to get confused or lost. There's just so much going on. You have to be into the story for it to make sense.
And though the book can pretty much stand alone, it is better if Die For Me is read first because there are a lot of references to the previous book. Simon's evilness can't be fully appreciated unless you read Die For Me.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the character of Alex. She's a fantastic strong, tough heroine. But she doesn't let that strong control allow her act stupid. I can't count the number of books I've read where the heroine's need to be strong and independent lets her act super stupid. But Alex doesn't. She's a strong, spunky heroine, but still smart enough to know when to listen to what Daniel is telling her.
Overall, I have not a single complaint for the book. I loved the characters, loved the romance, loved the plot. Everything made sense and was interesting. And I'm dying to read the next book in the series. I really want to know the full story of Susannah and I think a potential romance between her and Luke would be good to read. I'll be anxiously waiting for Kill For Me.
The eighth addition to Karen Rose's Romantic Suspense series and the second in the Daniel Vartanian series. Thirteen years ago Alex Fallon's twin sister was murdered and now an eerily similar murder has taken place. Special Agent Daniel Vartanian of the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) is back in his hometown of Dutton, Georgia, trying to solve the case but more bodies are stacking up. He is finding evidence that his dead brother Simon was involved.
Wow! I have said it before and I say it again - Karen Rose writes some creepy villains. This was not her worst but still creepy. The thing about this book is that there is more than one villain. Some are obvious and some are not. Although the story gets wrapped up at the end there are unresolved issues that may be considered a cliffhanger of sorts. But the important stuff was dealt with. Lots of twists and turns that kept me reading into the night and again first thing in the morning. I recommend Karen Rose to anyone who loves Romantic Suspense.
Scream For Me is another phenomenal read from the master of intense, chilling romantic suspense and creepy, sadistic villains, Karen Rose. This is the 8th book in her loosely connected series and the second part of a sub trilogy that began with Die For Me and continues with Kill For Me.
I highly recommend this, and all of her books for that matter, when you’re in the mood for a goosebumps inducing read that will also stir your emotions! Big 5 stars!
Scream For Me was another great book by Karen Rose. There was plenty of suspense along with a satisfying romance. The suspense portion of the novel was complicated and involved more than one villain. I didn't feel that this novel was quite as graphic as some others by Rose, but it was just as intense. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline, and I am anxiously awaiting the release of the next book in the series.
Alex Fallon returns to her hometown, Dutton, Georgia, after a thirteen year absence when her stepsister, Bailey, goes missing. Alex steps in to care for Bailey's obviously traumitized four year old, Hope. While she searches for Bailey, Alex has to deal with traumatic memories that being in Dutton triggers. One day thirteen years ago, her twin sister was murdered in Dutton, and later the same day, her mother committed suicide by shooting herself. Alex's response to the situation caused her to be hospitalized and she hasn't been back in town since her aunt and uncle took her to Ohio after her release.
Daniel Vartanian is still trying to deal with the knowledge that his brother, Simon, whom he believed to be dead, has killed numerous people, including their parents. A week ago, Daniel was present when Simon was finally killed by a Philadelphia policeman. When a young woman is found murdered in rural Georgia, Daniel is called back early from a leave of absence. As he begins to investigate, Daniel finds eerie similarities to the murder of Alicia Tremaine in Dutton thirteen years ago. Daniel soon meets Alex Fallon, Alicia's twin sister. Daniel and Alex are immediately attracted, and they quickly find that they genuinely like one another. As murders continue to happen and to copycat Alicia's murder, Daniel must find how the events happening now are connected to the past as well as to Simon. He is determined to keep Alex safe, and their relationship continues to develop. Both Alex and Daniel must learn to deal with events in their pasts so that they can overcome the dangerous situation they are facing.
I loved this romantic suspense novel. The story was very compelling and kept me intrigued. I liked the interaction between the hero and heroine and enjoyed the ways in which they provided emotional support for one another. I look forward to reading about Daniel's sister, Susannah, and his colleague, Luke, in the next book. This series has quickly become one of my favorites.
This is not really a standalone book. You really should read at least Daniel Vartanian #1. I'm reading through the whole Karen Rose catalog from beginning to end. I have never encountered an author who can craft a story like she can.
The Pillars of the Community of Dutton have something to hide, maybe even kill to protect. A serial killer is at work in Dutton too and he has his own vendetta to pursue. The key may be locked in the mind of Hope, who watched as her mother, Bailey, was abducted and hasn't spoken since. Alex, Bailey's stepsister, knows that she must find some way to unlock the prison that Hope has locked her memories in for there to be any chance to find Bailey alive.
Alex is not alone in trying to find Bailey. Daniel Vartanian is a GBI agent who was shocked when he first met Alex. Her picture is one of the photos that his brother took years ago of the torture and rape of over 15 young girls. Except, it wasn't Alex, it was Alicia, her twin sister who was murdered 13 years ago. Her killer is serving a life sentence, or is he? With women turning up just like Alicia, that is a fair question. On the heels of his shock, Daniel feels something for Alex he hasn't felt in a very long time and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.
This book was amazing to me. These are not the type of book's I usually read as a matter of fact they are the total opposite. I find myself drawn into the complicated stories. There are twists and turns that keep you wanting to know what is gonna happen next. Really Bad bad guy's and really Good good guy's. If you don't like violence in your story's then these book's are not for you.The feeling I got just now when I finished this book was WOW! I thought Die For Me was fantastic but Scream For Me was even better. So what's next? Kill For Me of course.
Scream for Me is book eight in the Romantic Suspense series by Karen Rose. On the first day back from leave after the death of his brother Simon, Special Agent Daniel Vartanian caught the murder case of a young woman beaten to death. However, for the officer first on the scene reminded him of a thirteen-year-old murder case in Dutton Special Agent Daniel Vartanian home town. Alex Fallon is desperate for the local law enforcement to believe that her stepsister Bailey is missing and not run off decided to confront Special Agent Daniel Vartanian. The readers of Scream for Me will continue to follow Special Agent Daniel Vartanian and Alex Fallon to find out what happened to Bailey.
Scream for Me is another fantastic book by Karen Rose. The way Karen Rose incorporated her twists and turned in the plot of this book did ensure that I kept engaged with the story. I love the portrayal of the characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout this book. Scream for Me is well written and researched by Karen Rose. The description of the setting of this book done well by Karen Rose they allow the reader to feel they are part of the background of this book.
The readers of Scream for me will learn about the devastating for families when a young child dies. Also, the readers of Scream for Me will learn about law enforcement serial killers investigations.
Omniscient and lucky bad guys. No clues until the very end. I was depressed throughout. Also, bad audiobook narration.
While reading this book I kept thinking of Michael Connelly’s Bosch books. Bosch does neat things and learns clues during the story. I am rooting for Bosch, I admire what he does, I enjoy the process. In this book no one does neat things or learns clues. It just drags until the end when all is uncovered. Lots of meanness and horrible acts. Karen Rose (KR) shows a killer who abducts, hurts and kills a woman. And it happens again, and again, and again. KR also shows other bad guys doing bad things, and then they do more bad things, and more bad things. By the end of the book I’ve sat through a dozen crimes and threats. KR makes the book long by adding crime scenes. It’s not until the very end that the identities of bad guys are known, mostly because there is a final shoot out.
I was frustrated because the witnesses and clues were partial and not revealing. Examples: A little girl saw an abduction but can’t talk due to PTSD. A bad guy wrote a letter to the heroine before he died explaining vaguely what was going on but in the letter he said “I won’t tell you the names of the bad guys, because it could put you in danger.” His sending her a key already put her in danger. Other victims could not name the bad guys because they were given drugs erasing their memories. So, no clues. It’s just a lot of wondering - who are the bad guys?
And then the bad guys are extremely lucky and omniscient. One bad guy was nearby in a vehicle (or something). Dan wants to talk with a teacher privately, so he and the teacher walk a distance away from other people so they can have a quiet conversation. But the killer hears their conversation. And now he’s he’s going to do something about what he heard. No matter what was happening, it seemed that there was always a bad guy nearby who saw or heard what the good guys were doing or saying and used that against them.
I want to root for the good guys, but they weren’t doing anything I could hope for or admire - just being blown around like helpless victims.
AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR: Tavia Gilbert was good doing general narration, female voices, and Dan’s voice (the hero). But she was awful doing other men. They either sounded like teenage girls or just weird.
DATA: Narrative mode: 3rd person. Unabridged audiobook length: 16 hrs and 17 mins. Swearing language: the f-word used once or twice. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 3. Setting: current day Georgia. Book copyright: 2008. Genre: mystery suspense.
Nice read, but not as good as the first opus. I got the feeling that the author wasn't very comfortable describing a serial killer including rape in his modus operandi. In fact, rape played a large part in everybody's story in one way or the other, and thus a great deal of the plot and the motivations of the characters stayed off screen. Not a bad thing per se, given the subject matter, but second handed narration and ellipses tend to downplay a story fast. The heroine's tale didn't have the edge the reader could have expected, and the Hero, Daniel Vartanian was a bit unaccented. He was eclipsed by his evil brother in the first novel, and the impression lasted in this second one. In fact, I liked the secondary characters much more. They had the brightness and the vivacity the main ones lacked. Especially Bailey, a former drug addict and prostitute who managed to get clean out of love for her baby girl. Her ordeal was heart breaking, and her cleverness and resilience were admirable. I hope to see more of her in the last tome of this grim trilogy.
Daniel Vartanian has been unable to sleep for the past eleven years, ever since he found gruesome pictures in his brother Simon’s possession. Pictures his own father, a judge, burned after Simon’s death so they couldn’t affect his career. Pictures that resurfaces along with a very alive, and seriously bent on revenge, Simon a couple of weeks ago. Pictures now in Daniel’s possession after his brother’s death (yeah, he really is dead this time).
When a killer starts reenacting a thirteen year old murder, Daniel knows those pictures will most certainly end up as part of the investigation, especially when a ghost from the past comes into his office. A woman whose body was found in a ditch, wrapped in a blanket thirteen years ago. Only, the woman in from of him isn’t Alicia Tremaine, but her twin sister, Alex Fallon, a woman determined to find her missing stepsister, yet another link in the long chain of investigations.
Someone is determined to set the record straight, expose a small-town’s secrets, others are equally determined to keep those secrets intact. By all means. Even murder.
Okay, I need to just breathe for a moment, here, because this novel was intense. Ooh, boy. This small trilogy inside a larger (loosely-connected) series is proving to be one heck of a ride. It all started with Simon’s reappearance (and the reappearance of the pictures) in Die For Me, continues with Daniel’s story (and a small resolution regarding those pictures) in Scream For Me, and will apparently come to a grand finale with Susannah’s story (those pictures and Daniel’s investigation sure opened a big can of worms) in Kill For Me. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start at the beginning, or in this trilogy’s case, in the middle.
This was yet another 5+ star read in this winner-streak by Karen Rose. Chilling suspense, wonderfully dark secrets, great pacing, wonderful characters (leading and supporting cast), intrigue, drama, romance, angst, thrills, chills…You name it, this book has it. This was yet another example of great “small-town” fiction. I sure am glad to be living in a city, because those dreadful small-towns where everybody knows your name, no one locks their doors and everybody knows everybody else’s secrets are starting to creep me out. Quaint and homey, but hiding such rot underneath the nice veneer. *shiver* Ms. Rose depicted small-town Dutton’s secrets, Georgia with masterful aplomb, gruesome and chilling details, and goose-bumps-raising “honesty”.
And she’s not done, oh no. Because it appears the first two books in this Vartanian trilogy were just an appetizer to what comes next, and I can’t wait to start.
The main story, the suspense, the drama, and the thriller was so engaging, I wouldn’t have minded if Ms. Rose forgot to throw some romance into the mix. Well, she hasn’t forgotten, and while I always say this in my reviews for Ms. Rose’s novels, in this book, what happened between Alex and Daniel sure did take my mind off the other stuff going on, providing a much needed breather. Because this wasn’t simple entertainment like her previous books were (despite the theme), this was a rather “heavy” book and those lighter pauses sure helped.
When her identical twin sister was murdered, Alex Fallon's life changed forever. Now, thirteen years later, Alex returns to the small town of Dutton, Georgia when her stepsister disappears and the police seem reluctant to investigate. GBI Agent Daniel Vartanian is also in Dutton looking into a set of horrific photographs depicting a series of chilling rapes. Daniel is shocked when he meets Alex as she is the spitting image of one of the victims. As the investigation into the two seemingly unrelated cases converge, Alex and Daniel will have to delve into their most traumatic memories to stop a malicious killer and save the life of a young mother.
Unfortunately, this is one of the weakest of Rose's books. The writing is overly repetitive with the details of entire events rehashed over and over. While the mystery is interesting and it is fun trying to determine the various club members' identities, the multiple plot threads are unnecessarily convoluted with some important details glossed over until the end (perhaps to keep the reader guessing) and others repeated ad nauseum.
Daniel and Alex's romance has potential, but the reasons for their initial attraction are unclear and their chemistry, which starts out strong, fizzles along the way. Moreover, Alex's character becomes quite strident toward the end and this is not at all appealing.
The secondary characters of Bailey and Beardsley are far more compelling and the sections detailing their interactions increase the tension and suspense. Although the villains are suitably despicable, there is a certain amount of overkill as the bodies pile up and the investigators fail to learn anything new.
Overall, definitely not the best that Rose has to offer and readers new to her writing should not start with this book. Hopefully the next installment will be better as Suzanna and Luke are both interesting characters.
Disappointed. This is book #2 in what looks like a trilogy though the author doesn't have them set up that way on her website. You should read "Die for Me" first because the crimes overlap, characters come from there, and the villains in this one were all connected to Simon (villain from Die for Me). The way this one ended, tells me that the next will connect even further and will be about Savannah and Luke only going more into child porn/rape.
This Reader was expecting the same intensity that "Die for Me" had and this book just didn't have it. I didn't feel the suspense either and the two main characters lacked emotional depth. There was something missing from their "relationship." Both had issues from their childhood--severe, but the way the dealt with it was annoying.
Finally, it slowed the book down to recap events during meetings and conversations. Having just read "the event" then reading about them sharing the details with each other in meetings and conversations was boring. It took me awhile to read this because could only read it in short increments due to loosing interest. Was NOT a page turner for me.
It reminded me of the movie "Kiss the Girls" with Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman, including the multiple bad guys...I liked the movie!
This book didn’t work for me. For me, it was hard to follow and there was too much going on at any one point. There are two alternate plots, one of town leaders involved in a clandestine operation and another of a serial murderer copy cat at bay, and they didn’t seem to mesh adequately with each other. Although she does a good job with the romantic interests in the story, many of the main characters are so stunningly reprobate that they start to seem like caricatures. Think the book suffers from overkill- is it even possible for that many dead bodies to start surfacing in a small town and have the town still function? It was so relentlessly dramatic, intense, and over the top all the time that all the drama in the book felt like overkill- the scenarios posited became surreal, like leaving a Fellini movie where you are so stunned by all the dead bodies you’ve seen that you could step over corpses on the subway without flinching.
I am really enjoying this series. This book had the typical Karen Rose high body count but had 2 mysteries to solve and a great romance. Lots of twists and turns.
Scream for Me by Karen Rose Romantic Suspense / Thriller / Mystery / Contemporary Series: Philadelphia / Atlanta
SCREAM FOR ME is dark and gripping story. It has good characterization and some seriously sick stuff. Not for the faint-hearted for sure! The plot is complex and needs attention or you may get lost by all those sub-plots and different characters. "Scream for Me" takes off one week later after the events in previous book ended, so its better to read Die For Me first.
Hero - Daniel Vartanian Daniel is still dealing with horrific events that happened in Die For Me (he was just side character in that book) and that were caused by his brother Simon. Turns out that there were more secrets in Simon's past that now begin to surface. It's a lot to live down but Daniel is tough. His blue eyes, golden hair, and hard body make him attractive to women, but driven by his GBI work, he hasn't given much thought to finding love - that is, until the beautiful Alex Fallon walks into his life.
Heroine - Alexandra "Alex" Fallon Tall, slender and beautiful, with caramel hair and cool, whiskey-colored eyes, Alex Fallon (29) is all calm and competence in the Cincinnati ER where she works as a nurse. Alex's past was not easy one. When her step-sister disappears, leaving Alex to care for her four-year-old niece, she never even knew existed, she travels to Atlanta to find the truth. There, Alex loses that hard-won composure as she confronts both her past and the compellingly attractive Special Agent Daniel Vartanian.
Also appearing: Luke Papadopoulos and Susannah Vartanian.
Scream for Me by Karen Rose is a Hatchette Group publication and is a 2008 copyright.
This book picks up where Die for Me left off. Daniel Vartanian is coming to terms with his parent's deaths and the awful truth about his brother, Simon. As Daniel investigates a thirteen year old case, he is lead to Alex Fallon. Alex's twin sister, Alicia, was a victim thirteen years ago and Alex nearly died as well. Now Alex's step-sister, Bailey, is missing. Bailey is a recovering drug addict with a young daughter, Hope. When she goes missing the local authorities think she just fell off wagon and is back on drugs. But, Alex doesn't think Bailey would abandon her daughter. In the mean time, clues to the past crimes can be found in some pictures that Simon took. It seems that Simon new Bailey's brother, Wade and the two of them were involved in something sinister. Wade is dead now, but made a confession on his deathbed to a minister, who can't tell anyone. Alex becomes a target along with several other women. While Daniel searches for a connection between the past and the present, he and Alex begin to see they have a lot in common, and keeping Alex safe takes on a whole other meaning for Daniel.
A twisted, complicated plot. Who was in on the murders and who was in on a series of rapes? What did Simon and Wade have to do with either the murders or the rapes? What is the story with Bailey? Alex will have to reach deep inside her memory to find out what really happened to her twin, and what bearing it has on the present. Daniel will also have to find some closure and deal with his sister's past issues with Simon. For all the answers you will have to read the next book- "Kill For Me" for Susannah and Luke's story. Overall another stellar romantic suspense novel from Karen Rose. An A+ all the way.
If you’re interested in dysfunctional families then this is the romantic mystery for you. Alex Tremaine’s identical twin sister was found murdered several years ago and the crime remains an unsolved mystery. At the time of the murder, Alicia mother Kathy was so distraught over the death of her daughter that she committed suicide, apparently in front of daughter Alex. Alex was so traumatized by that experience that she attempted suicide as well but was unsuccessful and although suffering with amnesia about the details of the event, was shipped off to live with her aunt Meredith where she matured into a functioning adult. Now she has returned to the small town in Georgia where it all took place because her half-sister, Bailey has disappeared and her niece Hope has been abandoned and apparently has witnessed something horrible since the little girl is now in a catatonic state. At this point the bodies of several other young women begin showing up, all of them contemporaries of Sister Bailey but Bailey is not among them although the MO is similar to the murder of Alicia. We’re not through yet folks. Next we meet Daniel, the lead state police investigator on the case who is dealing with his own psychological issues because he is responsible for the death of his younger brother Simon, who was a brutal serial killer and had murdered his parents as well as a string of others. It appears that he may be mixed up in this mayhem as well. There are lots of other despicable characters to try to keep track of but you’ll find that you’re often lost among the names and relationships. SOMEHOW, out of all of this, a romance develops between Alex and Daniel. I can’t wait to read the book about their children.
This is a series which frustrates me a little. It's stuck in the 3-3.5 star category. It's fine... but I just want more. I really liked Daniel in the last book but I felt his character was a little wooden or one dimensional in this one. And the nearly insta love "connection" he had with Alex just didn't work for me. Of course the fact that I just read The Last Widow probably does influence my thoughts, when I put a Karin Slaughter up against a Karen Rose there is a clear difference in which writer I prefer.
Things I like about the series - the whole interconnection between the characters and different areas of justice in various cities. And the storyline between the past and present crimes worked well also.
One last nit.. at over 600 pages for the paperback edition there was a lot of repetition... sometimes less is just more.
I enjoyed the romance side of this romantic suspense book, despite the fact that it came on very suddenly, but the suspense side was way too complicated for me. There seemed to be about 14 different villains supporting 5 separate evil plots. I couldn’t keep track of who was doing what, and at the end there was a big villain reveal that fell completely flat, because I had no idea who the character was in the story.
On the plus side, it was less graphically gruesome than Rose usually is, and always a compelling read.
This is a very complex intense thriller featuring a 13 year old unsolved murder, a rape club, and a present day serial killer. The cast of characters is huge, and trying to figure out how the three were intertwined was very difficult. Even though I was confused through most of this the action and mystery was very compelling. The romance between the lead FBI agent and the sister of the 13 year old murder victim was satisfying and totally unrealistic at the same time. Even though all my questions weren't answered at the end I did really enjoy this and look forward to the next book. 4 stars.
