You have rights. Know them. Use them. Is it legal to record the police? When do police have the right to search your person, home, or car? Do you have the right to walk away when stopped by the police? Knowing the answers to these questions will help protect you and the officer. Laura Coates, former federal prosecutor and Civil RIghts attorney, breaks it all down.
I first discovered Laura Coates as a legal expert on CNN. As a Sirius XM subscriber, I then heard Mrs. Coates when she appeared as a guest on Karen Hunter's radio show. Mrs. Coates has a talent for explaining complicated legal concepts in terms non-lawyers can understand easily.
She often highlights the ways that laws align or depart from the sense of fairness that laypeople expect. I was pleased when Mrs. Coates received her own radio show on Sirius XM, which can be heard on channel 124.
This book is an eye-opening revelation on the powers police officers have over citizens rights. Mrs. Coates delivers sober advice that should keep the average person safe, and prevent people from accidentally putting themselves in legal jeopardy. I reread this book to refresh my knowledge. The book is a quick read. The information is timely and well-researched by a former federal prosecutor.
This book encapsulates essential knowledge of how to responsibly interact with police and to know what your rights are as a citizen. Highly recommended for any member of society.
Author Laura Coates does a good job of mixing law and common sense. The book is written from the perspective of knowing the basics of your rights but not to the point of finding loopholes or getting away with crimes. Encourage parents with children of color to get a copy for their children.
This book was a quick yet informative read of our 4th and 5th amendment. This information that puts me ease now knowing how to interact with law enforcement.
Laura Coates provides some useful information but this book falls well short of providing much practical advise of how to stand up for one's rights. I am disappointed.
Laura Coates does a good job of providing the basics that everyday citizens need to know in order to protect their rights. The book is a good balance between being law abiding and knowing when your rights are being violated.
