I received an ARC of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and here it is, a generous 2.5 stars.
This is the first book I've read by this author, and she does have some skills as a writer, but in this case my willing suspension of disbelief only went so far. From the beginning, if two soldiers are on watch high on a mountaintop in Afghanistan, why are they talking to each other rather than maintaining silence? Why are they tossing rocks down the hillside? Why do they need the company of a bomb-sniffing dog up there? Did is not occur either of these soldiers that they were giving away their position? These are both Delta Force operatives mind you--the elite. How was the enemy allowed to get within 100 yards of their position without either of them, or their trained dog, noticing?
Further, I did have a hard time coming to terms with the author's lack of research about military protocol, the ease with which Mike, the hero, made Sergeant in Delta Force in such an incredibly short time, military doctors being sent home, leaving only a couple of nurses to care for the sick and injured alone, including being expected to perform surgical tasks, without anyone bothering to secure either the Army base or the hospital? Really? And that's just for starters--why did no one other than an injured hero go after Katie when she was taken by the Taliban, who overran the base with only 5 men on motorcycles? Mike has been told that he's being considered for the silver star for bravery in action yet is being accused of going AWOL when he's the only person to go after Katie?
Let's consider our heroine, Katie. Why is she still on the base anyway? She would have been sent home as soon as anyone suspected she was pregnant--and she's a registered nurse--how could she ignore the obvious? She's certainly a dedicated nurse yet she meets and has unprotected sex with Mike who is deployed the next day and she doesn't even bother to learn his last name? She's certainly feisty and has guts but the way she responds to orders at a military hospital was also hard to believe, and we are told absolutely nothing else about her life back in the U.S., other than learning that she's making a lot more money as a nurse in Afghanistan. In addition to her nursing duties, why is she also the only person in charge of Mike's physical therapy?
While I enjoyed the romance part of this romantic suspense novel and the sizzle between the two main characters, the aforementioned flaws kept me rolling my eyes until the last page. Finally, why on earth was this novel titled Missing in Action, when no one was missing in action?
