Taking the full impact of Flèche's great arrow, Tart's companions rally against the trio of powerful magical girls who are aiding the English forces. Melissa has accepted Cube's offer and become a magical girl herself, but will the addition of one novice be enough to tip the scales in La Pucelle's favor, assuming Tart can survive her injuries?!
A group collaboration consisting of director Akiyuki Shinbou, writer Gen Urobuchi, the original character designer Ume Aoki, and the producer Atsuhiro Iwakami.
Really enjoyed volume 3 of Tart Magica! Another solid installment in the series. My one complaint is that while Corbeau and her sisters are entertaining, they seem a little villain caricature ish. They seem to genuinely care about one another but beyond that they are very much “MWAHAHAHAHA!!!” type of villains, lol. Lapin is disturbingly cute, though, so I kinda like her even though she’s a nutty creepy girl. She acts childishly excited about torturing people for example. (ETA: Corbeau, Minou, and Lapin are fleshed out more as characters in volume 4, and Minou gets a plot twist. So that was cool!)
Elisa is a good character so far, I like her. Melissa is my favorite character so far I think, but really, Tart and Riz are great too.
Like all the other Madoka Magica related manga, this volume also has the OT rating. I wouldn’t give it to a little kid but I think it’s fine for older ones (12+ perhaps?). There’s violence as one would expect but no sexytimes or stuff like that. There is one scene in this particular volume where Corbeau and her sisters are steam bathing or something and they are naked, but we don’t see anything explicit. I’m slightly annoyed because their conversation during said scene would have worked fine in another setting. I mean there’s ZERO fanservice in this storyverse generally, so why did we need Lapin hugging Corbeau and ending up smushing against her boobs by accident? *rolls eyes dramatically * Again we don’t really see anything but just...groan. That was not necessary.
So yeah. I definitely enjoyed v3 and am looking forward to the last two Tart Magica volumes! I just don’t think this series is quite as good as Madoka Magica. Which isn’t really a dis from me because I LOVE Madoka Magica.
P.S. Tart, you make me cringe every time you call Cube/Kyubey “Monsieur Angel”... *shudders*😂
I probably will never give this series 5 stars. It's okay for me, but I enjoy it enough that I won't ditch it, like the "Black Bullet" series. This was another okay volume. We met another character: Elisa. I like her, I like the maid the most. (I forgot her name.) Tart and Riz are eh. I'm going to read the 4th volume soon!
Going off from the reviews I did for the previous two volumes, the giant infodumps continue to be tiring, even if I appreciate the historical research and strive for accuracy on that front.
I think the blend of PMMM-style storytelling with the history is handled somewhat better in this volume, and I did enjoy the continuing conflict between the two factions of magical girls and how that's written as impacting the two sides of the war.
Again however, Jeanne herself barely feels like a character, and that's not changed from the previous volume. I really hope this improves in the last two volumes.
I actually am really enjoying this series. It's a bit different in tone from the Anime but I like the characters. like others, my two main complaints are the weapons the characters use- a gatling gun and a magical staff of some sort, which both feel anachronistic. the bits on the history are interesting enough, but really aren't necessary for the most part so should have been left out
