My brother is a big fan of the Re:Zero series and so, whenever the anime was on going, he made me watch the series with him. Now, after a few years have passed, I’m truly invested in this series too. I’ve read the light novels that have been published so far and I’ve loved most of them, since every volume leaves you with more questions than answers, and has me working on crazy theories about what is going to happen next.

But there is certain charm in seeing the whole thing in a manga format. The illustrator really gave life to Nagatsuki’s characters and the world they live in feels real. In my opinion, this is the beauty of this manga: seeing their expressions and their interactions instead of just reading how everything develops.

This volume is the introduction to the main story, but in case you don’t know anything at all: Subaru, our protagonist, is a guy who was summoned into this new world, and Emilia, a magic user, and a half-elf saves him from the first moment they meet: Subaru gets attacked by some low life folks and Emilia rescues him, even if that means she loses her track of a thief called Felt, a girl that steals Emilia’s badge in order to sell it on the black market.

Unfortunately, both of them get killed and after several times, Subaru gets that his only power in this world is being able to return by death, up to a check-point. So he uses it to his advantage, 'cause he sworn that he would help Emilia not for his sake, but just to return the favor. And also, to see her smile one more time.

Now, if you know me at all, you know I love Emilia, and I’ve always thought that Subaru has so much potential, even if he doesn’t believe in himself at first. And he is the kind of protagonist that has so much depth into his character.

One thing is for sure: their destinies are sealed together the moment they touch hands before dying. And this power of his, will bring more questions than answers.

After finishing anime, I wanted to read the manga as well, just to extend the experience!

Story- going to an alternative fantasy world and returning to a check-point after dying-exactly like a videogame! Still, interesting concept.
(However don't ever think that dying is easy even in a fantasy world. It is scary enough. Poor MC)

Characters-MC Subaru is my favorite . Though a bit dense, he is sweet, helpful and kind character. Emilia is cutie and also too kind for her own good. I also like Felt and master swordsman Reinhart (he is hot).

Art- is rather good and easy to look at.

I really enjoyed the first arc and ready to see the new arc coming with more adventure and more *sob* suffering *sob*..

Ilyen például a hormontúltengéses, következetlen főhős, a cselédlány-ruhás mellékszereplők, a történetben felbukkanó tucatnyi fiatal női szereplő, valamint néhány feltűnően bizonytalan nemi identitású karakter is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch

A másik kedvenc jelenetsorom viszont a mangában is jól visszajön.

3.5/5 This was an ok read. The only reason I'm rating it so low is I'm almost absolutely sure that the original novel series or the anime will be better way's to experience it. This is my first foray into the franchise but it has been in my periphery for some time. It's a typical isekai story so far with the twist being that when the main character dies he groundhog days back to the day he arrived in the new world.

I'm not going to dive deep into the plot here but it is fun and I think eventually I would like to read the light novels or at the minimum watch the anime. The art for the manga is really well done however I felt like it probably only covered maybe 2 episodes of an anime and I read it so quickly it was a little disappointing.

Natsuki, Satella, and Felt on the cover of volume 1.

Read for The Manga Squad Manga of the Month for April 2022.

I need to read more of this manga... However, this volume got me hooked on watching the anime series, which is now my #1 anime that I am still anxiously awaiting for the 3rd season. The story alone is incredibly bizarre and at the same time full of SO much emotion. Every single genre and type of characteristic you can think of from any manga story is brought inside this Isekai fairy tail unlike any other you've seen or heard. Extremely underrated and highly recommend if you want to ball your eyes out and have a lot of "what the f!$?!?" moments (I promise there are good wholesome moments, too, though).

Subaru finds his life changed dramatically when he is transported to another world and finds himself in the midst of a fantastical adventure. He also discovers that he has a fantastical ability that sees him repeat the day whenever he is killed. A fantastical approach to a time loop tale, this first volume brings interesting questions and compelling character dynamics which leave me interested in what may come next. A fascinating and compelling start to this tale.

A solid start for Natsuki Subaru and the world that he unintendedly was summoned to, lacking in a few places and I'll get to that, but all in all a very decent starting point for one of the best and most ambitious fantasy novels I've read in a while.

Part of the problem I have with this is the pacing, we get to Lagunica with Subaru and we equally know nothing about whats happening, we're given a basic rundown of what Subaru is and his personality and that's it, nothing else needed in the opening story. we've got a Hikkikimori NEET Otaku who is acting exactly like you'd expect one of us to act if we're Isekai'd.

But this is where it gets gud!!!! See Subaru isn't bestowed with great powers, he isn't given a legendary weapon, he's not even got a useless idiot goddess to leer after, he's on his own, plopped down in a world that he has no clue of, no understanding of the language and was lucky enough to have their language be close enough to his that there's no problem with communication, but that's it, that's where his luck ends.

And this is a seemingly medieval magical society with its own rules, its own public policies, its own activities. And Subaru is an isolationist 17 year old imagining that this is his easy Anime Waifu gaining adventure.

He gets exactly what any of us would when that happens, he gets his ass kicked, immensely. Over and over. Multiple times and isn't learning from his mistakes at all.

I love the guy (I mean he's a FUCKING idiot, but we'll get to that with volume 2 and onwards) but he's thickheaded and doesn't read the room properly, so he takes a long time to be a likable guy.

Then there's the other titular main lead of the series and dammit I'll say it right now "I AM A REM STAN" and I know, this will leave a lot of things to be desired but hear me out.

Emilia is perhaps second to Subaru on being daft in this situation, from the first loop to the final one, her actions really only make sense if you think of her as being insanely naive and beyond childlike in thinking (and yes I know, seen season 2 so I know already, Calm down Emilia Stans, I don't hate her!!) that I find it hard to actively root for her (and I'll be honest, still think Crucsh or even Priscilla would be a better ruler as of right now in the story).

And now to the thing that brought this from a "meh" to a "oh hold your appas guys, this is freaking amazing!"
The time loop mechanics of this story are painstakingly well thought out and done to as close a perfection as it's possible to do. I am a BIG fan of a time loop and I've rarely seen a story where something like this goes on written with such attention to detail and perfect accuracy. From the beginning where Subaru appears, to the act that restarts his loop, to the numerous times he goes through the same day, if you pay attention to it, you can see that Tappei-sensei has worked out exactly where every single person is in each loop at each time, what would happen if X happened instead of Y and how that changes things is something a lot of writers find trouble sticking with, but this is a time loop that is almost entirely done perfect.

Now as for the cause of the time loop. Well it could've been anything, but no, this is Re:Starting life in another world from Zero(Re:Zero) we're talking about. Where the author reaches into your chest and rips your heart out with a loving tenderness and then makes you watch as he destroys it, so expect the worst (it won't help, mind you but it's best to be prepared) and we have Subaru's loop clause be his death, of which Subaru remembers everything, he retains the memories of all things that happen in the past loop, adding to his memories so no Butterfly Effect brain damage re-writing of his mind.
That also means he remembers his disemboweling by Elsa Greinheardt -the bowel hunter - multiple times along with seeing the people he grows to care about have t heir limbs cut off, be split in two, have glasses shoved through their heads. So yeah, Subaru is pretty much being tortured in a nightmarishly bad way over and over.

And worst of all, part of that is because he's an idiot and makes stupid mistakes.

The massive positives for Re:Zero is the story, the world of Lagunica and the mystery that's still being revealed, for the first entry though the characters aren't as well fleshed out as I'd like them to be and if I were picking this up off the rack without having watched the anime, the mystery of what's happening to the HikkiNEET and the world around him wouldn't be enough to keep me coming back.

LUCKILY THOUGH, it gets a lot lot better with the mansion arc in Volume 2 and I've just started that.

Which means I should say I'm reading that,

I suppose...

I actually read a more recent volume today, Chapter... 4? part ??? (too lazy to go pick it up and check), but I prefer, when I can, to at least review the first volume first before getting into the subsequent ones, especially the ones pre-Goodreads account with no notes in my records on what I thought about them.

This is sort of what I want to comment on. For a while, I really loved this series, but keeping up with it has been a nuisance. MOST graphic novels just go 1, 2, 3... etc. up to I believe I've seen in the hundreds(?!) for some. This series has chapters, and parts for each chapter, and how do you tell when one chapter ends and ensure you have all of the volumes in that chapter? I have this problem with my Bookworm series, where it almost feels like I've missed a few volumes in between chapters (but I read them anyway).

This volume is assuredly where this series starts, though, and it's great EXCEPT it has the absolute WORST "Isekai"-ing of any "other world" book. Spontaneously appearing in another world with ZERO prompting is the sloppiest work ever, without even the standard "hit by Truck-kun" cliché.

Yet I love it. I love that Subaru has ZERO ridiculous "being brought to another world superpowers" (except the one that is described in EVERY chapter break). I love that he has to use his brain to figure out how to not screw things up (more). I... am not excited about what happens later, when he makes a complete embarrassment of himself and doesn't get to do it over, but it shows him growing as a person.

That's such a nice change from "I got hit by a truck and was reborn in another world with stupid amazing powers for no reason" swordfighting/punching/fireballing shenanigans. I appreciate the effort of someone with nothing going for him giving his all to be amazing and save the day anyway. (Oh yeah, he does turn out to have one affinity for magic, but not a particularly useful one.)

Recommended if you're tired of the same overpowered dorks in a high fantasy world... okay, this is ALSO high fantasy, but underpowered...? Haha... well, check it out if you like!

An immaculate rendition of what the value of ones life truly is.

Re: Zero takes a deep dive into the highly saturated isekai/fantasy genre yet it comes out as something that feels fresh, relatable, and bethinking. It's fantastic characters and highly interesting world/plot all support the book and make it feel like something that's truly worth your time.

What really sets Re: Zero apart from it's countless isekai/fantasy predecessors is Nagatsuki and his ruthless writing. While in most isekai/fantasy stories you will see a protagonist who is seemingly able to overcome basically everything almost solely by themself or with miniscule support, Re: Zero doesn't do that. Subaru is weak and gets mopped in a physical fight against almost everyone and also lacks any useful combat magic, however Subaru still manages to "win" against his opponents. This is due to his deep care for his companions, his analytical ability, and a power to time travel which he is only able to use through death. At times Subaru can be highly insufferable at times however I feel as though this is one of the reasons why he is the perfect protagonist for this story Subaru is extremely selfish, selfish to the point where he is willing to die if it means everybody he wants to be alive will stay alive, this eventually causes his mind to break only leading to redemption thanks to his friends showing how while Subaru is weak his willingness to rely on others is what makes him the perfect protagonist with perfectly normal human flaws.

Continuing on about the plot of the story, Re: Zero takes a familiar plot concept of groundhog day and a familiar world and makes it creative through its ruthlessness and the fact that Subaru has to die to use his powers. Re: Zero is a fantastic story built up by many fantastic elements.

Received a free review copy: Like a lot of manga, it's a very short read, an hour or two at most. Unfortunately for this manga, it makes it harder to review. Volume One spends much, if not nearly all, of its time playing set up. We learn that the main character, Subaru, has been transported to a fantasy world, and that when he dies, things start over, giving him a do over. But beyond this, there isn't much story yet. There is the familiar terrain of boy meets girl, boy wants to help/save girl, but beyond the cliche much hasn't been developed. All of these caveats being said, it's not without its merits. The Groundhogs-Day device makes for an interesting tweak to a concept that has plenty of competitors, and the book's cliffhanger leaves the reader intrigued. Its greatest fault is that it's yet to develop its own world. We know next to nothing about why Subaru is here, or even where here is. The characters have only the most basic of traits, and Subaru, the most developed character in the manga, often resorts to shouting out his own personality (which I will admit is kinda funny). Will they develop these things, of course. But leaving it for later volumes makes this volume seem half empty. Overall, I'd say if this is your thing (you dig the transported to a fantasy world story), give it a shot. It retails for thirteen dollars, which feels high to me, but it'd worth checking out from a library for sure.

Hey everyone! This series is rated Teen and has some violence and most certainly death so if you know someone that can't handle that kind of stuff then I wouldn't suggest this series. For everyone else though let's dive in. :)

Subaru Natsuki is having a problem. Coming home from the convenience store he suddenly finds himself in a magical world without a penny in his name (due to the currency is different of course.) Thank goodness he has the snacks he got from the store but there are more pressing matters at hand as he confronts hoodlums, meets a beautiful Half Elf girl with silver hair and dies. Thats is right...he dies but he doesn't stay dead. You see upon entering this world he was gifted with a power that every time he dies he finds himself right where he started as if he just arrived. After some trial and error even this poor boy figures out this insane loop for what it is so now the question is will he learn how to avoid dieing and save everyone that he has meet so far on his journey. You'll have to read to find out. :)

Fave part of the book would have to be when Subaru uses his phone to "slices fragments of time out and storing it on the device." Those poor simple magic folk. :)

An entertaining marriage of Saturday morning cartoon, video game concepts, and high fantasy, Re:ZERO is solid fun, kind of the manga equivalent of eating a huge bowl of sugary breakfast cereal. Complete escapism, and I am totally hooked.

On his way home from the convenience store, teenager Subaru finds himself transported to an alternate world. Naturally, he takes it in stride and immediately starts speculating what special skills he must have, because... y'know, why not?

He soon meets a silver-haired half-elf who is as kind as she is beautiful. Unfortunately, things go wrong, Subaru is killed... and he finds himself back at the beginning of his alternate universe adventure, just as if he'd restarted a game at the last save point. It seems his "special skill" is dying and restarting, and he soon realizes he must relive this story until he returns the kindness shown him by silver-haired friend.

As any manga, this is a very short read! The art is impressive though it would have been much more appealing if it were colored.

This story revolves around Subaru Natsuki, who mysteriously ends up in another world and the only ability he receives is time travel via his own death. He encounters usual stuffs of a fantasy world like spirits, silver haired fairies, etc! So plot is kind of cliché like boy meets girl and boy wants to save girl and is willing to do everything in his power to save her! We do not know anything of how he ends up in this world and where this world actually is! The sad part of the story is when a person has to relive the scenes over and over again and still ends up losing and hurt!

The only flaw in this book is that sometimes it's kinda difficult to understand who's delivering the dialogue! Apart from that I'm looking forward to read the rest in this series!

I am not sure on this series so far. The first book, as manga first volumes often do, spend most of its time introducing the characters and the general situation. The situation is a familiar "guy gets summoned to another world" but adds in their version of groundhog day - the main character has the power of time travel though his own death, and relives the same day while trying to change events.

As with most of these types, one does have to suspend belief a bit. Subaru definitely accepts his new world very easily and begins to experience his version of deja vu. May read another volume or so to determine my interest, but at the moment it seems a very circuitous plotline and not sure where they will go from here.

I won this on a Goodreads Giveaway. I can't wait to find more of the series. Imagine you are a high school kid and you suddenly can get whisked off to another realm. There is a catch, it seems that this realm has you there until you can solve some quest and, if you die, you start over again right from the beginning! The artwork is well done line drawings of top quality. The dialogue is also well scripted. This was first published in July 2016 so I am guessing I may have to wait a little bit to find the next books in the series but I certainly plan on finding them as they come out. This one is worth it!

So I bought this manga on a whim, since I hadn't watched the anime yet. I agree with another review I saw that talked about how this first volume was really more set up than anything, so it did get off to a bit of a slow start.

After watching the first episode of the anime as well, so far I like the anime better. I think it's because in the anime you get a better sense of the characters in that first episode than you do in the manga. However, I will definitely buy the next volume and see what I think then. It's an interesting premise, and I am hooked and wanting to know what will happen with the story.

Didn’t love this book, the set up was too self-referential (maybe normal guy being taken to another world is a common manga/anime/game them but this is the first time I’ve read something of that genre), the characters didn’t really interest me (not that there was much development to make a person interested), I found the plot boring enough to want to stop reading and I don’t think I’d bother going on if I didn’t already have the second volume here. The art is nice enough at least. I think I’ve browsed past this anime in the past, I’m not really feeling a need to check it out based on what I’ve read so far.

Natsuki Subaru is a young man not in education or in a job, and all he does is play video games, like a shut in. However, he is soon transported to a fantasy medieval world, and believes he will have a great time, until he dies, or so he does. In this world, he has the ability to reset time like going back to a savepoint in a video game. However, he has to die in order to reset time and only he knows what happened. I like this story because it has an interesting time travel mechanic, that can be quite traumatic.

Isekai novels are growing spectacularly, so the fact that the concept of resurrection helps the story move along is intriguing enough to keep me going for another volume or so. There's some wit and humor to the characters to balance out the seemingly gruesome details to be ventured. Not exactly sure if this is a good thing or not, but I'm hoping when I get a chance to get my hands on the next book will help change my mind.

After watching and reading the novel and the tv series adaption. I got to say, Re: zero has got to be my best read novel of all time. Without a doubt, this novel has stolen the special spot I've placed Evangelion on. In this novel and the rest of them introduces a cast of characters that blew my mind away, although it wasn't something I've never seen before, but the way the story makes them interact with each other just blows my mind. This is my biased review on Re:zero.

Another guy gets dropped into the fantasy world, wow so many of them nowadays. Don’t worry though as this one is quite good, the main protagonist isn’t OP per say but he definitely has an advantage over his peers. He has to learn from his mistakes though, it’s nice to see how a little change to the day can either effect it massively or just a little.
