Broken Dreams #1.5

Un été pas comme les autres

Rate this book

**I received an eARC of this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.**

A Summer Like No Other was a fun book to read. Unfortunately, after hitting the 50% mark, I realized that it wasn't my perfect cup of tea. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I didn't like it but I didn't enjoy it as I wished I would.

The story line is okay and intriguing but in the beginning, everything was exciting and giddy-worthy but as the story progressed, it actually, little by little, started going downhill. It had a potential but it just wasn't executed nicely. Also, I completely felt like there were a lot of parts in the story that were implied but not explained. It could've been better if there were tidbits of the past of Em & Nick. It was like the writing style already assumed that the reader already know certain pieces of information, so some parts were hard to follow at times and left me with unending questions.

Not only that, I felt that some characters were undeveloped. I could not relate to them as much. I personally just didn't feel that spark or chemistry between them and I don't like them as a couple that much. Neither the character development in this novel was good nor did they progress. The story and the characters ended with an open-ended and unanswered questions.

However, I still liked the dual POV writing style. I liked the idea that I both got to read from Em & Nick's perspectives. The dual POV style was nicely written that I breeze through it easily.

I did enjoy this novella, so I do want to know what happens in the sequel. I hope that the questions left unanswered in my mind will be answered in it. I will definitely keep an eye out for the full-length novel to find out how it all pans out.

I recommend this book to people who are looking for a just feel-good type of novel. Perfect for when you just want a quick read and isn't too dragging, I believe you will like this very much. :)

This book provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

3.5 stars.

This story was sweet, sad, and absolutely adorable. I liked this way more than I thought I would and I look forward to the next book.

Em is a dancer. She has a crush on her brother's best friend (although we quickly learn that he is also Em's best friend). Her dad has just been fired. And she's on the hunt for her birth parents.

Nick is also a dancer. He has a major crush on Em. His dad just fired her dad. And Nick is being blackmailed by his dad.

Yep. Super awesome story. Em and Nick decide that they'd like to spend the summer as a little more than friends. At the end of the summer, it'll be done. No strings. Nothing. Just a bunch of fun. Riiiiight. Because that always works out well. Especially when you have deep feelings for the other person. These two love each other, you can see it in their gestures, the way the talk to one another, and the way they have always been connected in some way. It's a summer romance that could last, but Nick's father isn't having it. He needs Nick to help him seal business deals. If he doesn't? Well, Nick's dreams will be shattered. As the story progresses we see that Em feels incomplete. She feels like she isn't good enough for others and she feels like she is missing something. This feeling of loss prompts her to search for her birth mother. Nick wants to help Em in any way that he can--especially after hearing his parents arguing about Em's adoption. That seals the deal. He will help her. The two become closer than before during this endeavor. Neither can see what this path will do to Em, but it is one she is determined to see through.

Summer flings, heartache, and the need to belong are all here in this novella. Read it. It's a sweet one.

(I received a copy from Netgalley, In exchange for an honest review.)

Actual rating - 2.5

The characters in this weren't awful, but after a bit they irritated me.

This started out okay, but it quickly went downhill for me unfortunately. It started to drag really badly, and the only saving grace about the book was that it was short.

Overall, Not awful, but I'm glad it was short.

Dans l'ensemble, ce n'est pas vraiment mon genre de livre, mais c'était une lecture très rapide qui m'a aidé à me remettre dans le rythme de mon défi de lecture.

Maybe it’s because I liked this author’s other books, but I expected to like this one a lot more than I did.

I didn’t feel anything for the characters, and if anything they irritated me, especially the way Em seemed to keep whining all the time!

The storyline just bored me, and I had a hard time getting all the way to the end. I didn’t care what happened, I didn’t care about the characters, and I didn’t care about the romance, so in all, I really didn’t like this one.

God! This book... UGH! I truly love this series and all of these characters. In A summer Like No Other we get to meet Emilia and Nick and we get to read about the pain, suffering and un-containable emotions they both go through.

Emilia is so innocent, in the beginning. She is a dancer and her roommate is Nata, the main character in the full length novel, One, Two, Three. Emilia is on the search for her birth parents and she is going through so many emotions throughout this novella. On top of her search she is in love with her brothers best friend, Nick. There are many things that keep Emilia and Nick apart and it's very sad.

Now, just because Nata is mentioned in this novella does not mean you have to read One, Two, Three first. This novella has enough content that is can be read alone. I think because it focuses on two certain people is the reason it can be read out of turn. But you should still read all the other books anyways. Because... they are all amazing.

Nick is.... a guy. He is a normal guy, except for the fact that he dances. It is very enjoyable to get to read his thoughts and feelings. He is very impulsive and goes back and forth with a lot of the things in his head. Emilia is the biggest thing he is conflicted about. Well, besides his father and Jen. Nick is told what to do by so many people that I don't know why he hasn't just said screw it. Money is a big influence over most peoples lives and sadly Nick is one of those people. I just really hope he doesnt hurt Emilia because of his need for wealth.

After all is said and done I feel like Emilia should have just left things alone with the adoption. Everyone told her she would feel worse but I guess she needed to find that out on her own. Nick helped her a lot and I am glad he was there for her. But before we find out what the end of the book shows us I had all sorts of theories going on in my head. Was Nick's dad Emilia's father? Did Emilia's adopted dad have an affair and she was his real kid?

Let's just say that after finishing this novella I think both Emilia and Nick feel like a piece of meat auctioned off to the highest bidder. And I was frustrated because of the way it ended. I loved loved loved this novella! So don't think my frustration is a bad thing. I love when a book makes me want to know more.

Overall, I gave this book 4.5/5 stars.

"Note to heart : find someone else to have a crush on.
Note to self : stop talking to yourself, people might think you're weird."

First of all, I must say this is the first book I read from the Broken Dreams series (even though the book is supposed to be a companion book to One, Two, Three, I could not resist this blurb). It was not a problem at all as this book is clearly Nick and Em's "bubble".

I was completely bewitched by Elodie Nowodazkij's writing and by Em and Nick's love story... A fordidden, impossible love story...
I loved that the book was written from both Nick and Em's points of view. They were so cute together I couldn't help sighing happily with that goofy grin on my face...
happy_sigh

I absolutely loved them and the way they interacted, crazy about each other but not willing to admit it...
"... instead she steps toward me.
She's way too close.
She's not close enough."

I couldn't help wanting Nick and Em to realize how perfect they were for each other.
Toward the end of the book, things got very emotional, and I was left wanting more of them... I'll definitely make sure to read all other books in the series!

Mi aspettavo qualcosa di diverso
Scrittura scorrevole e leggera.

A summer like no other - Elodie Nowodazkij
3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

So 3 stars for me was I liked it and I did. Some of the language was annoying and the angst but I have to remember these are 16/17/18 year olds and that’s probably what I was like at that age.

I didn’t realise it was an introduction to a second book In Nick and Ems story. (I should have noticed it said that in the title lol )

So having said that and the way this one ended I do think I’d like to read the next book to get some of my questions answered. There are a couple of different plots to this book and it has piqued my interested.

The world’s building is good, the characters are good and there’s definitely more to explore.

It didn’t blow me away but I did enjoy it.

If the next one ever goes on sale I would be tempted to pick it up.

I don't need a happy ending, but I need more of a resolution of the plot than this book gave. The whole time I read it the plot felt forced, I didn't much care for the romance between the leads, and there were too many odd side plots to care about. The relationships build between most people in the book didn't feel real, like adults don't talk that way to kids in 99% of the situations that came up. But, most of all, the whole just didn't feel like it could, would, or should happen. I only chose to give 2 stars since it kept me reading enough to see what was going to happen and how it would end. But, all in all, reading it didn't so much other than fill a few hours of time.....

⭐️⭐️

i have mixed feelings about this book. it wasn’t really written to the standard most books i read are and i absolutely hated both of em’s parents but it showed the effect of keeping secrets from those you love and how it eventually pushes them away

altogether, this isn’t really my kind of book but was a really quick read to help me get back on schedule with my reading challenge

(no trigger warnings i can think of but google to check)

Back in freshman year of high school, I have traveled on spring break to Saint Petersburg, a city with many marvellous and outstanding art museums. I'm getting to my point, don't you worry.

While visiting the grand Russian Museum, I found myself stumble upon the 'Modern Art' section, where there weren't as great pieces as the main halls, but they were still pleasing to the eyes. Soon, after browsing for my delight, I stand before a white canvas with only a black square drawn on it. No stroke lines. No imperfections or an artistic abstract. Just a plain square.

My mother, who was traveling a lot with me back then, explained to me that the reason this was hanging here is because it is a piece of art. She also noted that many individuals reported feeling deep and intense emotions.

"Wait, I think I do feel something," I grasped for my heart, trying to hold my tone from turning into bitter and sarcastic.
"Really? What do you feel?" she cocked her eyebrow up, unsure if I was joking.
"That this is the stupidest thing I witnessed in my oh-so-short life."

And this is, ladies and gentlemen, exactly what I feel about this 'novel'.

And I put the word novel in quote marks because this wasn't a written piece. This was just a check list of an author of what they think will make an indie novel successful.

Two characters who love each other because they're both steaming hot? Check!
Enter LGBT+ characters with no actual propose? Check!
Angst? Finding a bitter truth about the heroin's past? Check and check.

I rest my case, your audience, and I wouldn't even go into how bland the characters, plot, setting and writing are, because it is not worth mine or yours precious time.

A Summer Like No Other had so much potential to be great but unfortunately the execution of the story didn't go that well. The beginning of the story started off okay but then it started going downhill after that.

A few things I had problems with:
1) Nick and Emilia. I liked them as individual characters but I didn't understand why either one of them had huge crushes on the other. I personally just didn't feel that spark or chemistry between them and hence as a couple I don't ship them at all.

2) I felt like there were a lot of things in the story that were implied but not explicitly stated. It was as if the reader was already supposed to know certain pieces of information. Because of this some parts were hard to follow at times.

Despite the problems I have with this book, I don't find it horrible. There were actually some parts that I really did like.
1) Dual Perspective. I liked the fact we got to read the story from both Nick and Emilia's perspectives.

2) Emilia's quest to find her birth parents. I thought it was intriguing and added depth to Emilia's personality.

Overall, I thought the book was just okay with some major problems.

This book is added to my favourites shelf. I can't believe how much I loved Emilia, and trust me that love doesn't come easy.
Emilia is one of Natalya's (One, Two, Three) friends from the School of Performing arts in New York. I think that this book is timed before Natalya had her accident
The story is about two people that aren't supposed to fall in love, but end up doing it anyway (stuborn people). Emilia and Nick are both dancers and go to the same school. They have a crush for each other but since Nick is Emilia's brother best friend, their relationship is kind of taboo.
They make a deal to be together 'till the end of summer, and even Emilia's brother Roberto agrees.

In the meanwhile, Emilia is looking for her biological parents. She was found when she was a baby and she struggles with herself and who she is, the only thing she hasn't count on was her birthmoms reaction to her.

Nick on the other hand has to deal with his dad who wants him to become a lawyer instead of a dancer. He made a deal with his son and as long as Nick does what his dad tells him to, his dad continues to pay for his schooling.

This book is full of secrets and mysteries, but it is slightly more romantical than One, Two, Three. I would definitely recommend this
book!

The description of 'A Summer Like No Other' captived my attention, although it wasn't something i had never heard of but it still sounded adorable.Don't we all love a play boy and a goody to shoe girl, And secretly hope for them to fall in love with eachother. I wanted to read something light so i requested it on Netgalley right away.

I enjoyed the plot because of it's simplicity. It was delightful having the story told from dual point of view of Nick and Em.The chemistry between the protogonists was lively and amusing. It was great how both of them had eachothers back inspite of their reluctance and inhibitions.I really liked Nick,i thought he was charming and witty.Inspite, of his bro code with Roberto he still adored Emilia.I found Em's character to be lil meek and yet impetuous at times for eg in case of finding her birth mother.Especially,I like the part that how much she was attached to her family and cherished them. Nick's dad was a pain,i wanted to punch him for being so snutty and annoying.

Overall,I liked the love story part and characters. But,I also think Emilia trying to find her parents part could've been more neatly written,i felt that part of the plot abrupt, rushed and sloppy.I think climax left alot of unanswered questions.I will look forward to sequel for the answers.

I did enjoyed it quite a bit !

Having just finished this book, it's hard to gather all my feelings into a logical review.

This book started off as the perfect summer romance. It was sweet, relaxing and easy to read. Em and Nick were two lovable characters and I also loved the dual POV from which the story was presented.

Even though I expected this book to be about two spoiled kids that only have to worry about relationships and having fun, I was glad to discover that it is more about life and its difficulties, and how love can be a healing balm in our worst moments.

It seems so unfair to me that two people who love each other have to refrain their feelings for such silly reasons.

There wasn't much action or suspense in the book, and I felt the story was progressing too fast without giving much detail on how the characters feel.

Still, I was very happy reading this book, until the ending changed everything. My Kindle app was showing 88% progress and I was still expecting many things to happen, when suddenly, it was over. It all came too abruptly and left me with lots of unanswered questions. And now I have to wait 2 months to read the rest? ~_~

This. Is not. How. You end. A book.

I would recommend ASLNO only together with its follow-up, Always Second Best, unless cliffhangers are fine with you.

No. It cannot end that way. See this is why I don't read a lot of novellas. They're too short and they almost always end in really frustrating ways. I do not like not having closure. Must. Have. The. Next. Book. Now.

A Summer Like No Other is a great book to spend time with. I may not have enjoyed the book as much as I thought I would but it definitely was a fun, sweet and romantic read. I had a great time getting to know Nick and Emilia. I love the dual POV. Nick and Emilia are both struggling with family issues, going after their dreams and figuring out their true feelings for each other so the alternating povs helped a lot in making readers empathize and relate with them both. There was very little to no character development but I can understand why since this is only the novella. Also, I would have loved to see more of Nick and Em's backstory. There was too much history between them and I just didn't feel the connection.
The minor characters were well-written and given enough personality to make them interesting. But the whole revelation of Em's biological parents seemed a bit anticlimactic to me. It didn't make an impact whatsoever and it was a little disappointing.
And with that ending? I would definitely have to read the sequel.

I received an e-arc to read and review.

One Summer that can changed their life and can changed their feelings. But what will happen to them after summer?

” What we have is a friendship with temporary and limited benefits. Nothing less.”

It’s on the two point of views of the character. I love the story when there’s a two point of views because I got to chance to know what’s on the guy’s mind.

The story follows Em and Nick they are best friends and a ballerina dancer. They have a deal that they will be together but for only one summer. Em is an adopted child, she’s desperate to find her mom. But her family doesn’t want to give information about her true mother so she feels like empty. Nick is a rich kid, her family has a business so his dad wants him to date someone for the sake of their business. I love the personality of Nick, everytime I read his point of view I’m starting to swoon him. I LOVE YOU NICK! I know it’s hard to be on Nick’s position and he sacrifice a lot for EM.

It’s perfect contemporary read.

I received an ARC of A Summer Like No Other from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the description of this novella. I usually like novels where a girl falls for her brother's best friend. I only wish the story would have been as cute as the description.

I liked the story, but it was missing something for me. I think it might have been more of Em and Nick's shared history. There was mention of previous attraction and chemistry but it would have been nice to have actual flashbacks or something.

I also had a little bit of a hard time connecting with Em. I get she wanted to find her birth parents but it bothered me that it took half the book to know why. I kept wondering what the big deal was. I wish the mystery behind it all would have been brought up earlier.

I really liked Nick, though. He had a ton of charisma and was exactly the type of guy a little sister should fall for.

Overall, I thought it was good, just some minor things that bugged me.

**I received an eARC of this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book.

I like this novella, but as always there is something I don't like about this story.

I really wanted Nick and Em to realize how perfect they were for each other. They are obvious in love with each other and I really don't understand, why they can't be together, why Nick don't stand up to his father and why Rob can't accept, that maybe he should not stand in the way for them and just accept, that maybe they are meant to be, accept that they are in love, just like he is and that they are good for each other.

The novella ended very open and I was left wanting more of them, more of Em and Nick. I'll definitely read the next book in the series, because I will like to found out what happen next to Em and Nick, I really want them to end up together in the end.

It was not that bad... But I didn't like the characters at all. I hated Nick and Em a lot. It was like Em was 12 years old. I didn't enjoy the story. It was so convenient, too easy to be realistic. I will not read the sequel. I enjoy the fact that the story was set in New York, I've been there last month so I enjoyed reading about it. I also enjoy the switch of point of view in the chapters.

A Summer Like No Other is a seriously cute story of falling in love and following your dreams and giving in to what you want even when you know it can’t last. Em and Nick both struggle with the expectations their families have put on them and use a summer romance to help each other deal. Their playful banter and sizzling chemistry made them so much fun to root for. This story is just their beginning, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Thank NetGalley for the ARC

This book was the perfect summer read. It deals with love and family while having a pretty awesome love story thrown in. I have always been a lover of the brothers best friend kind of story because it adds that extra element to the love story. Overall this is a great beach read light and simple with soft moments that will make your heart melt.

This was a great read and really kept me guessing, still guessing over here actually.

We meet Em and Nick as their budding or more like flourishing relationship takes a different route, just for the summer though. Nick is Em's brother's best friend. There is actually more complications there but don't want to give too much away. Em is trying to find her birth parents throughout the book. It's hard not knowing who you are or where you come from, even if you do have a great family to support you. There is always just a little piece missing that she's looking for.

Nick helps her throughout her journey, especially since he thinks he knows who could be her mother. There are a lot of hints thrown around here and there but like I said I'm still guessing. I don't want to give too much away because there is a lot to tell her so you must read this book.

I'm off to find the next book as this cliffhanger was really making me feel like that's it. No, I need more.

A Summer Like No Other is a companion novella to book one of the Broken Dreams series but can be read as a stand-alone. Emilia Moretti is a sixteen year old dancer who loves her adoptive family, but she feels like she can't truly know herself until she meets her biological parents. She is also in love with her brother's best friend, Nick Grawsky. Nick is in love with Emilia, but he doesn't want to destroy his friendship with Roberto, Emilia's brother. No one will get hurt if they are together for just this summer.

This audiobook is adorable. Emilia is so sweet, and my heart breaks for her on this journey of self-discovery. The book ended with so many questions unanswered, which has interested me in reading more about Emilia's story.

It ended on a cliffhanger so I was automatically disappointed, but I was not disappointed by this book.

I felt like Em was a solid character with real life problems and she was very easy to relate to. Nick is. . . Average. I feel like he was totally embarrassed by Em, even though his Dad “made” him date Jen. . . He’s decent. I wasn’t in love with him or anything and he wouldn’t be on my list of best book boyfriends, but I understood him.

But one other tiny problem I had with this book was the whole brothers best friends thing. I was expecting it to be harder for Nick and Em to be together, but it was like Rob completely supported it.

Overall, this book was pretty good and I want to read the next one.
