OMG, love this spirit!
La Comtesse de Cagliostro, or ' Countess de Cagliostro', is the 12th book in the Arsene Lupin series, serving as the 'origin story' of the infamous gentleman thief:
Note: I read the Chinese translation of this book.
We meet the 20 years old Arsene Lupin (although he didn't call himself this at that time) who is an penniless orphaned young man with no family good name and background for protection, but what he lacks in family background and social status, the young Lupin would make it up with his ambition, wit and his passionate love for a pretty young lady whom he intends to win from the girl's stern father.
So on we go with Lupin through his adventure/misadventure, we realize the girl's father is hiding an ominous secret, and a scheme is being set into motion to recover a grand hidden treasure, soon Lupin had encountered the mysterious, beautiful Countress de Cagliostro in a most unlikely situation, the Countress is rumored to be 100-plus years old and her enemies (she has many) called her 'witch'; she also sets her eyes on the hidden treasure. Romance, love triangle, schemes and conflicts ensured.

I'm happy to meet the 20 years old Arsene Lupin at his humble beginning, it also amuses me to see the guy acting like a typical teenage male: he is self centered, arrogant, irresponsible, thinking all women should adore him, impulsive, overly-confident with his charms and capabilities (though he has been proved to be inexperienced and naive for more than a few times in the story). Still, to be honest, I can't remember a time Lupin isn't an arrogant jerk and isn't chasing after one pretty lady or another. LOL
Oh, how the romance between Lupin and the Countess was written! How the love triangle was written! I'm totally amazed! I mean, at the beginning Lupin vows his undying love to the innocent young lady he is courting then after he meets the Countess, Lupin forgets all about the poor girl and vowing his undying love and devotion to her, only after some 150 pages later, Lupin remembers the poor girl and writes her a letter to beg her forgiveness! I. Am. Totally. Amused!
Still, despite Lupin's irresponsibility, I'm impressed by how his relationship with the Countess was written, it is an unstable relationship between an ambitious young thief and a lady trickster, filled with love and hatred and betrayal, wounded pride and greed. I guess this part of the story is the part that I like the best.

Porywy serca mają to do siebie, że zazwyczaj następują gwałtownie i w zupełnie nieprzewidziany sposób wiodą wybranych nieszczęśników wprost ku prawdziwemu szaleństwu. Arsène Lupin - niezbyt słynny naówczas dżentelmen włamywacz – mógł rzec słów kilka à propos miłosnych uniesień. Przydarzyła mu się bowiem zgoła przepyszna przygoda; ktoś powiedziałby może, że nieprawdopodobna, ale nie. Lupin w istocie przeżył coś niesamowitego, szalenie podniecającego i ekscytującego; coś takiego, czego doświadcza się jedynie raz w życiu i co też daje początek licznym wzlotom, upadkom oraz implikacjom, będącymi rzecz jasna – naturalnym następstwem popełnionych zbrodni.
Historia rozpoczyna się więc, jak na każdą fantastyczną opowieść przystało, całkowicie niepozornie. Młody Lupin, umykając w beztroskim pośpiechu z komnat trzymanej pod kluczem oblubienicy, natrafia niechcąco na aferkę rozgrywającą się pośród posępnej scenerii. A konkretnie nie aferkę, lecz diaboliczny spisek zadzierzgnięty wokół zniewalająco pięknej nieznajomej. Przyczaiwszy się nieco, Arsène z skupieniem śledzi gorączkowe poczynania zebranych i ze zdumieniem konstatuje, że owa nieznajoma znalazła się w śmiertelnym potrzasku. Kompania rozsierdzonych mężczyzn oskarża hrabiankę Cagliostro o rzeczy niebywałe, w przekonaniu Lupina wręcz niemożliwe do uczynienia przez tak nadobną postać; nie zwlekając dłużej, mężny dżentelmen rusza na ratunek damie w opałach i w mgnieniu oka, staje się jej bohaterem! A ponadto, trafia również na trop dawno zaginionego skarbu. Czyż wypadki nie mogły ułożyć się korzystniej?
Ach, cóż… To co młodzieniec brał za szczęśliwą monetę, stało się jednak zgubą i przyczynkiem do lawiny nieszczęść; bo jakże dał się tak naiwnie zwieść, że los – ten przekorny i okrutny los – naprawdę mógłby zesłać mu anioła z nieba w wraz z kufrem pełnym złota?

Przynajmniej wtedy, dziś na szczęście wrażenia mam diametralnie odmienne. W przypadku serii opowiadań o Dżentelmenie Włamywaczu, odnosiłam wrażenie jakby to sama forma sprawiała mi problem; nie podobała mi się szczątkowa kreacja – tak przecież interesującej! - sylwetki, miałam problem z absurdalnie gnającą akcją i w żaden możliwy sposób nie mogłam nadążyć za ciągiem rewelacji, choć brzmiącymi fascynująco, to przedstawionymi jednak miałko i nijako.
Sięgając więc po powieść, posiadałam pewne obawy, ale jak się szybko okazało – bezzasadne. Bo tym razem Leblanc, pomimo pozornie mikrej objętości omawianego tytułu, popisał się przede mną nie tylko pięknym piórem, lecz równie fantastycznie skonstruowaną historią sensacyjno – szpiegowską.
Tak, dobrze czytacie – te ekscytujące przeżycia młodego Arsèna Lupina można z powodzeniem zaliczyć do miksu będącego po trosze sprawnie rozpisanym kryminalikiem, a po trosze klasycznym przykładem historii awanturniczej, podszytej odrobiną romantyzmu, wisielczego humoru i uroczo słodkiej pikanterii.
Wyborna to mieszanka, zwłaszcza dla entuzjastów prozy Christie czy choćby Doyle’a, ponieważ Leblancowi udało się wykorzystać wszystkie niezbędne elementy, z reguły zaskarbiające sympatię czytelników. Akcja ‘Hrabiny Cagliostro’ pędzi już od pierwszych stron i nie zwalnia ani na minutę. Jest jednak przy tym angażująca i w pełni satysfakcjonująca - podejrzewam zresztą, że to przez wzgląd na silnie rozwiniętą osobowość Arsèna, na jego osobiste perypetie; w tym utworze bowiem znalazło się w końcu miejsce na dokładny szkic postaci, na dostanie rozpisanie jej oryginalnych cech i ukształtowanie pewnego rodzaju trójwymiarowości. Łatwo z Lupinem sympatyzować, równie łatwo wczuć się w jego nastroje, a już w ogóle najwspanialej - móc wspólnie przeżywać coraz to bardziej zaskakujące epizodziki. Bo tych zdecydowanie nie brakuje.
Genialność Leblanca przejawia się w wyszukanych intrygach oraz spiskach. Zagadka pogania zagadkę, domysł goni domysł, a aura napięcia i tajemniczości unosi się nad bohaterami tego hipnotyzującego dramatu. Na naszych oczach rozgrywa się przedstawienie absolutnie zajmujące, gdzie mnogość oraz niepewność kreślonych scenariuszy każe w pełni skupiać na sobie całą uwagę, by do ostatniej chwili - do tego jednego, decydującego momentu, do finalnego aktu - z przejęciem świadkować wszystkim zaskakującym wydarzeniom.

¡Por fin conozco a la Condesa de Cagliostro!
Si bien describe las primeras andanzas de Lupin cuando todavía es Raul, en su adolescencia, esta novela se escribió varios años después de que LeBlanc publicara las primeras.
No me extenderé. Me ha gustado, principalmente porque Lupin es el puto amo y adoro al personaje. La Cagliostro es una digna alma gemela, con su intensa relación de amor/odio. La historia te engancha y tiene todo lo necesario para disfrutarla de principio a fin.
La siguiente de Lupin será una relectura.

Literally lupin horny hours??? It was so chaotic and funny but felt more like a fanfiction. The mystery was very simple. The love story - OMGG he was literally behaving like a horny teenager (I mean I get it) and I feel like Leblanc really had fun writing it Lmao

Ha! this was good! Maybe not the best Lupin, but i've read all that's available in English and Portuguese, and having one more Lupin to read was great. The translation is good, but with quite a few distracting typos. The second book (The Revenge of Cagliostro) is the better one, and follows the general pattern of a murder mystery. The first book (The Countess of Cagliostro) was interesting mostly as part of Lupin's origin story. The inclusion of the short story "The Queen's Necklace" was a nice touch, and the "fan fiction" short story that ends the volume is also good.

The book was better then the previous books I read with Arsene Lupin. The name of the book I read was the Candlestick with seven arms, though I identified its the same book from the comments section. It seems this book is one of the first book of Arsene Lupin adventures.

Aunque son los inicios de lupin, la misma fórmula ya está muy desgastada (por lo menos en mi caso). Es divertido, tiene su toque de entretenimiento pero no va más allá. Creo que se puede vivir sin conocer esta historia

Un très bon roman policier à l’écriture moderne et rythmée. Les personages sont intéressant et l’histoire est intemporelle. Un livre qui donne envie de lire d’autres histoires d’Arsene Lupin.

What a book, an amazing story to read and learn about how and why Raoul became Lupin. A movie was made about this book but if the movie is beautiful to see, the book is way better and a must read. Arsène Lupin deserves way more love and appreciation, maybe more than Holmes (at least so far in my reading journey)

Arsène Lupin Year One
If Sherlock Holmes is the grandfather of all detectives, Arsène Lupin is the granddad of all the greatest bank robbers. Lupin III, the anime inspired in Maurice Leblanc's character, of course, ranks first, but there is also Robert Redford in *The Sting*, George Clooney in *Ocean's Eleven*, even Pierce Brosnan in *Thomas Crown Affair*. These rascals are clever, always one step ahead of their rivals, but also light-hearted and generous. They don't use violence in their heist and despite their criminal tendencies, they really don't mean any harm. As "SOBs with a big heart," they are just lovable.
I guess this is what really made me feel a little uncomfortable with this **Arsène Lupin e a Condessa de Cagliostro**. This is supposed to be Lupin's very first adventure (except for the "queen's necklace" case, of course, when he was only 6 years old), when he still was called Raoul d'Andrésy. But as a kind of "Arsène Lupin Year One" conceived by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, it gives to the character a rather dark and somber motivation for his later adventures that, in my mind, subverts all the fun of the rest of the canon. It is like forcing Adam West's Batman into Christian Bale or Ben Affleck.
The conflict, of course, emerges from Raoul's affair with the Countess Cagliostro of the title of the book. While this starts light and anticipates a funny mix of sex appeal and rivalry, the kind later would be seen in movies like **Mr & Mrs Smith**, soon it gets sour and moves into tragedy, with sick jealousy and ethical dilemmas aiming at building conflict.
My impression is that 17 years after the publication of the first **Gentleman Burglar**, Maurice Leblanc wanted to give Lupin a more complex and mature profile by making his youth more meaningful, and then resignifying his whole opus. But the conflict of love and anger between Raoul and the countess, imho, does not have enough depth to make it happen. Leblanc does invest a lot in the this turmoiled and ambiguous relationship, but then takes his story too seriously and lets the fun part get lost. The mystery of the Seven Candle Holders, which is the mystery chasen in this book, is entertaining and nice, but there is a lot couples therapy in between that slows down the plot and even makes it more predictable.
In my mind, **Cagliostro** immediately remits to Hayao Miyazaki's **The Castle of Cagliostro** of 1979, Studio Ghibli's interpretation of the universe of Lupin III, created by Kazuhiko Kato. I picked this book after **ALGB** exactly because of the title, without taking account of years of publication or any preferred order. Seeing Clarisse d’Étigues right in the beginning of the book, just lovely as Clarisse d'Cagliostro in the Ghibli movie was a kind of reversed fun service to me. So despite all the flaws, I'm really into Lupin now, and am ready for the other books Leblanc connects to this: **The Hollow Needle** (1907), **The Island of The Thirty Coffins** (1919), and **The Secret Tomb** (1923).

So despite all the flaws, I'm really into Lupin now, and am ready for the other books Leblanc connects to this: **The Hollow Needle** (1907), **The Island of The Thirty Coffins** (1919), and **The Secret Tomb** (1923).

Definitely one of Leblanc's finest. However, I like to address the negatives before the positives first though, so let's start with that.
I believe another reviewer picked up on this but Maurice Leblanc once again displays a fundamental misunderstanding of women as 3 dimensional human beings. Though this is a facet of the time period he's writing in, it is still important to address this as it has disturbing parallels to modern day misogyny. Women are either pure or evil in his stories and this is on full display with how the ingenue Clarisse d'Etigues compares sharply to the femme fatale Countess of Cagliostro. Arguably, the Countess' role as a villain could be attributed to masculine fears of a woman in control of her sexuality.
Onto what I liked. I'd say that this, Arsene Lupin vs. Herlock Sholmes, and the Hollow Needle are my top 2 favorites of the series. The mystery is gripping and has the characteristic trickster quality of the earlier novels blended with the author's affections for the beloved Normandy of his youth. I heard that Leblanc wrote this one about 20 years he wrote the first book and wanted to return to the original flavor of his earlier stories. The effort paid off excellently- lots of twists and turns and fast paced action.
Thoughts on the characters: Barring the Queen's Necklace short story, this story has the youngest Lupin, 20 year-old Raoul Andresy: brash, reckless, with a dash of his older self's dangerously sharp intellect without the life experience, and definitely more than a little inconsiderate. He may be a well educated young man, but he thinks with his libido over his intellect more than once in this story. .

1er livre de Lupin, omg quelle aventure !! C’était drôle ! C’était épique ! Il y avait des retournements de situations constants, des mystères infinis, des plans machiavéliques… L’écriture est romanesque mais drôle grâce à Arsène (ici Raoul) qui a toujours le bon mot.
La comtesse de Cagliostro elle aussi était un super personnage. Puissante, effrayante, mystique, elle est machiavélique mais également bonne, puisque on hésite beaucoup à savoir si c’est une alliée ou l’antagoniste. Les deux camps se clarifient petit à petit alors que Raoul se distingue d’elle pas son refus de commettre des crimes, mais c’est leur seule différence car elle est son maître et il est son éleve, jusqu’à la dépasser. Ainsi, leur relation de maître, leur alliance, et leur amour, tout prend une tournure tragique lorsqu’ils comprennnent que malgré tout, ils sont trop différents pour rester ensemble et doivent devenir ennemis…
Il faut quand même critiquer le sexisme qui mine le livre et qui empêche Cagliostro d’être la grande méchante tragique qu’elle pourrait être : tout le livre insiste sur son sexe, qui est son seul défaut. Parce que c’est une femme, elle est sujette à ses émotions qui l’empêchent de battre Raoul. Elle commet des actes cruels , mais son « hystérie » fait qu’elle ne peut le supporter et doit se reposer… c’est insupportable.

This is a great prequel to Lupin’s adventures, and yet it does look it’s translated into English, so I had to get a Japanese version. Arsène Lupin, or Raoul d'Andrésy, is twenty years old in this picaresque.
I think I like picaresque more than detective stories, as long as the main character doesn’t commit murder, so this is perfect. Lupin never kills; he even saves those who are at risk, regardless of what they might have done.
There are awkward points in light of today’s critical eyes. He is said to have done his first theft at age six, and by then his father was dead and his mother, a minor aristocrat, was in the care of her distant relative. He also claims he learned skills in martial arts, gymnastics, swimming, and so on from his father. So he learned them when he was six at most?
Despite these problems, the novel is hugely entertaining. Mysteries! Romance! The three parties fighting not so much with brutality but with wits!
I read some Lupin stories before; I ought to read/reread more.

Mon premier Arsène Lupin. Je commence par cette 12e aventure, qui se révèle être un prequel racontant les débuts du « gentleman cambrioleur ». Premier point positif : ça ne pose pas de problème, les seules références à la série sont expliquées clairement.
Ensuite, une fois adapté au style un peu « classique » (mais élégant !), j'ai été surpris d'être complètement embarqué dans l'histoire, sans temps morts. Les personnages sont intéressants, plus complexes qu'on ne le pense au début.
« Raoul » n'a pas peur des superlatifs quand il parle de lui-même et son ton « trollesque » est parfois insupportable.
Finalement, l'antagoniste est plus intéressante, mystérieuse et torturée. La relation d'amour/haine est parfaitement déroulée, on croit à cette intensité.
Le mystère est moins bien écrit, et à la fin les twists abracadabrants s'enchaînent d'une façon peu fine. Enfin, l'âge du livre se fait sentir, qui malgré des personnages féminins entreprenants, les dénigre souvent en les traitant comme « des petites choses fragiles ».

« La comtesse de Cagliostro » nous offre un privilège rare : assister à la naissance d’une légende. Dans ce roman, Maurice Leblanc nous présente un Arsène Lupin à l’aube de sa carrière criminelle, alors qu’il n’est encore qu’un jeune homme de vingt ans se faisant appeler Raoul d’Andrésy. Ce jeune Lupin possède déjà les traits qui feront sa renommée future : une intelligence vive, un charme irrésistible, une audace sans bornes et ce mélange unique d’insolence et d’élégance qui deviendra sa marque de fabrique. Pourtant, il n’est pas encore le gentleman-cambrioleur accompli que les lecteurs connaissent. À travers ses premières aventures, nous découvrons un personnage en construction, qui apprend de ses erreurs et affine ses méthodes..

Un premier pas avec Arsène Lupin dès mes 10 ans, l'histoire m'avait bien plus, mais je ne m'y était pas replongé. Il est retombé entre mes mains lorsque j'étais au lycée, et j'ai été ébloui. J'ai plongé dans le livre, que j'ai lu d'une traite : une fin d'après-midi et toute la nuit. La complexe histoire d'amour, de passions, d'intérêts qui sous-tend tout le récit est d'une extrême beauté. L'écriture est fine, la psychologie des personnage très intéressant et on voit une véritable évolution du futur Arsène Lupin, qui explique ses prochains agissements. A la fin de ma lecture, j'ai passé plusieurs dizaines de minutes, les yeux grands ouverts, avec un grand sentiment de vide. Je me suis véritablement plongé dans cette histoire et j'en suis ressorti difficilement, j'aurais aimé qu'elle ne s'arrête jamais.

Maurice Leblanc a su donner vie à une histoire riche en rebondissements dans laquelle amour, haine, passion et beautés anachroniques se mêlent. Seul bémol : il faut prendre des notes pour se souvenir de tous les détails qui permettent de résoudre l'énigme. Recommandé aux amateurs du genre, sinon à éviter.

I enjoyed the writing style and it's a fun way to brush up my French.
The story is ridiculous. Don't even get me started on the characters. I could only finish this by pretending that it's narrated by Lupin himself and that he is the most unreliable narrator EVER.

Un livre d’aventures passionnant et qui se lit rapidement. Une parfaite façon de se vider la tête. Pas mal écrit, quoique sans originalité, dans le style à la Dumas (véritable source d’inspiration assumée pour le coup)
