Vipassana Meditation is the unique practice taught by the Buddha. The Teachings of the Buddha are extremely vast, all enshrined in the three baskets of Tipitaka Vinaya, Suttanta and Abhidhamma. The immense wisdom of the Buddha has given us this tremendous wealth of the knowledge of the Truth, considered from all aspects and angles. The same immense wisdom of the Buddha has also put all of his teachings in a nutshell, as it were, in three neat verses. I am referring to ovada patimokkha gathas which give a brief summary of his teaching.
The book is basically a commentary on the Dhammacakka Sutta and the Greater Satipatthana Sutta. The book draws content from the Satipatthana on how mindfulness can be applied to the sensations even though it does not explicitly go through the actual technique of Vipassana which is used in Vipassana retreats. But still, I would recommend it to those who are about to do their first 10-day Vipassana retreat.
The book contains translation of Buddha's 3 of the most important Sutta and commentary on them. 1st 2 discourses of Buddha and Satipatthana Sutta are included in the book. These 3 discourses are very important as far as practice of meditation is concerned. I absolutely love the appendix of the book; it has few small 2 lined sutta offering great insight. The book is a must read for those who have tried some form of Theravada Buddhist meditation and want to get insight into how Buddha himself taught meditation.
