Dickbeer(A Short Story)

Rate this book
This story was originally published in Day One , a weekly literary journal dedicated to short fiction and poetry from emerging writers. Sixteen-year-old Davey Knox has been playing it straight for as long as he’s been alive, and he knows he won’t be able to keep up the charade much longer. To escape the stifling environment of his conservative hometown, Davey applies to a boarding school for overachievers in small-town Louisiana three hundred miles away. Yet after his parents drop him off at the boys’ dorm, Davey realizes he’s still just as desperate not to blow his cover as he was back home. His assigned roommate, nicknamed Dickbeer, will change by simply accepting Davey as he his, Dickbeer helps the questioning young man begin to do the same. Funny and frank, Dickbeer is a portrait of the bonds formed among a group of teens navigating the strange rules and rituals of adolescence.

I don't mean to sound corny, but in the spirit of weird sincerity, I must admit it: there are turns of phrase in this story that will haunt me as I go to sleep tonight. It also has plenty of the kind of puerile crudity so fitting of a dormitory. The prose is perfect and captures some very good characterization..
Dickbeer is a bittersweet coming-of-age story. It's not a roman a clef, but there are serial numbers filed off of reality so nicely in this novella, and not just in the classic/obvious ways, that I am at a loss.
