Society Dawning

Rate this book
For a millennium, a society of Magi stood as the defenders of the common person. Their dedication to the principles of morality and justice acknowledged no arbitrary borders of kingdoms or nations. However, their light was extinguished over a century ago by a power-hungry emperor who betrayed and decimated the Magi.

Now a noble, a slave, and two commoners have been given the gift of magic from the goddess Nalria along with the daunting task of rebuilding the lost society of Magi. If they are to have any chance of success they’re going to need to work past their differences. They will have to survive a ruthless emperor determined to ensure that magic does not reemerge during his rule. They must also overcome the growing threat from an evil sect of necromancers who have their own aspirations for magic and power. They will probably also need a miracle. However, if they succeed they just might change the known world.

It's a 3 ...a classical fantasy novel with not very original elements of magic(classical gdr schools of magic),story development(the evil emperor, the necromancers, the love story between the protagonist and a fellow adventure companion)....still an enjoyable one to read at the end.
It starts very slowly, describing the various - and numerous! - protagonists of the novels, their lifes and whereabouts and until one-third of the book you haven't a damned idea of what will be the real storyline and where this will lead you...
Then, little by little, everything begins to fit in the right places and the novel develops in a more regular and captivating way.
The boys are a little too.."wonderboys"(another classical element), which master the magic they do not even suspect to exist,in a very, very short time and brief "tutoring": they make decisions and confront enemies in such a rapid way, that it's hard to be very believable, even in a fantasy novel..
Still, some protagonist are well described(such as Kimly or Sarge) and some elements intriguing(the antimagic element "garroliron" and the motlites created with it,for instance),that I'm curious to see how they'll be developed in the story arc: so I made up my mind to give another chance at the trilogy, continuing to follow it with the second book...;)

This is definitely an interesting story! 4 different individuals are gifted magic and tasked with rebuilding the Society of Magi by the goddess Nalria. It’s not an easy road for them and they have to learn to work together and get past their differences. This book does start off a bit slowly with a lot of descriptions of the characters and setting. I found it to be valuable information however, and the story does pick up along the way. I particularly enjoyed the magic system. I’ll definitely read the next book in the series!

I liked this story. It was interesting and kept me reading to see what happened next. Gave me a feel of a quest and fantasy story as the characters ended up traveling around and meeting different types of people. Some scenes made me laugh and some cringe. There was adventure and violence and evil characters along with the good guys. Just an good start of a series.

It unfolded into an entertaining read. In the beginning, it took me a minute to get drawn in as it felt like there was a fair amount of explanation on how the empire, the various social groups, and the magi society was ordered and connected together or in this case didn't all that well. However, it was necessary and picked up soon enough. I found the main characters that the author put together to be an intriguing combination, some due to the way the society is structured with the emperor. They must end up working together, but there is an underlying tension because of that structure that threatens to undermine their alliance. The characters were enjoyable though and as the real threat is apparent, the pace doesn't stop and the difficult part was putting the story down!

I finished Society Dawning in about three days. Not because it is a quick read, I finished it in three days because I couldn’t put it down. The book has such a nice flow to it. It bounces from character line to character line beautifully giving you just enough in each chapter to keep you hungry.

My only complaint, and its not really a complaint, is that “Society Dawning” is only the beginning for these characters and in a world where everything is on demand I am going to have a hard time waiting for the follow up book. T.J., Please start writing them now if you already haven't.

I plan to recommend this book to anyone that will listen. These characters attach themselves to you and they do not let go. I plan to follow them for as long as it takes to complete their journey.

Society Dawning is easily in my top 3 favorite books I've ever read. I read the book every chance I got, and ended up finishing it in five days. It brings to life great description of the world and characters you are reading about. All of the main characters are beautifully written to create enjoyment and excitement throughout the entire book no matter who is the focus at the time. Without a single dull moment, it sucks you in from the very beginning to create a story you don't want to put down. I can't wait for the next book in the series and have high hopes for the adventures to come. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy stories filled with magic, adventure, and many other thrills.
