Interlocking Hearts

Rate this book
A human, an almost-human, and a more-than-human walk into a palace... The DMA Files, Book 2 After her husband threw her out, Paisley Compton drew her sexuality around her like a shield. She finds solid ground as a palace maid until, during a formal dinner service, she trips onto the lap of a man who takes her breath away. Ben has always known Jon is far more than property, and he jumps at the chance to get the android his certificate of humanity. Paisley-whose abilities far exceed her job title-is a welcome distraction from the bureaucracy. Used and abused by his former owners, Jon trusts no one-particularly the smartass woman who's caught Ben's eye. He might not be certified human yet, but he has all the right parts to get to the bottom of this sexy mystery wrapped in a maid's uniform. Their attraction sparks unexpected new conduits among them, but when they realize Jon's certificate comes with a terrible price, they must risk everything to foil an Anti-Mech plot-and hope they survive to lose themselves in each other's arms. I wouldn't call this a Romance at all really, and I wish I could give 2 1/2 stars instead of 3...

I wouldn't call this a Romance at all really, and I wish I could give 2 1/2 stars instead of 3... I saw this story as more of a book about robots/droids fighting for rights and the humans that fear them more than anything else.... Yes,there was a "romantic" element w/Jon,Paisley and Ben but seriously despite the "I Love You's" spoken by the 3 in their unsatisfying ( for me it was rather unsatisfying any way) happy for now ending,it didn't really make sense even though by then I was really rather loathed to care by the time it ended.... Lots of things really bugged me about Paisley, supposedly in the prologue we see Paisley at around 25 when the D bag hubby who's just made himself her ex kicks her doormat self to the curb ,we watch as Paisley then literally walks away determined to never be dependent on any one ever again and decides a personality make over w/"I don't give a crap" attitude is what's needed and starts by being nasty to the 1st man she sees... Ok,ok maybe the jerk didn't need to jokingly off her to help her in the shower at the truck stop but it did show us the "new Paisley" was probably gonna swing too far in the opposite direction.... Next we supposed see her 10 years in the future 35 now and sadly Paisley seems emotionally stunted and more a tad immature, working the Palace as a maid,w/her main concerns ( other than her Robo Bestie) seem to be doing as little work as possible and how she's going get "laid" next... Damn I HATE that term but personally I find it as tacky as she is.... The story as far as Paisley is concerned has two modes she's either leading w/her vagina consumed with when's have sex or have another orgasm from either "Robohippie" Jon or Mr.Hottie Ben but honestly most the time it doesn't seem to matter which ,it just depends on which one she's not ticked off at at the time,or protecting/helping her bestie.... Paisley has No great life plans or interests or anything in my opinion that makes her interesting all she wants is sex ( w/out emotions, coz Yeah that's what made her a doormat only) and spend time w/her bestie Coral and make enough money to not be dependent on anyone for anything but between her immature attitude and her need to run w/ever she got a little scared keeping a job wasn't always easy to do.... This was sadly a one pov story that wasn't set up to be good/fulfilling as a one pov story,I mean seriously even a muted menage ( and their relationship was barely there) needs at least 3 voices and all we got was Paisley and the guys walking off every time they got upset w/out explanation during or after.... Sure Pai has hat I'd call plenty of run ins w/the guys and sex or the lack there off is mentioned almost ad nauseam but their is little to NO relationship building and honestly even though it's been 10 l o n g years since her hubby dumped her Pai doesn't really show signs of growing up and getting a clue til almost the end of the book, kinda felt like the Grinch when his heart grew only her it was Pai gaining a lil sense about herself and her "heart" and the coming together of the 3 at the end almost felt like the end of "Sleepless in Seattle" if Meg Ryan had told Tom Hanks she loved him when she finally met him in the end, but mean sure Pai spends most the book lusting after one or the both of them, but she also spends most the book either ticked off at them or running from and or avoiding them and honestly they don't go out their pay to pursue her or anything ,most times it's really random between them w/usually one or both walking off in a huff w/no explanation and only one pov and NEVER the one you need ..... I would NOT call this a
"romance" and I'm insulted it is,this more about Cyborg/Droid's gain the rights the need and deserve and continuing the poor from the 1st book more than anything else.... Their is NO relationship building just 3 ppl who seem to bump into each other occasionally have sex once or soo ,angry and misjudge each other easily, walk away w/out answers and some how for not true reason we get show form an attachment to each other....
If you wanna read this because you LOVE reading about Cyborg type characters and their struggles and or you loved Coral and want more Please do!!! But if you randomly find this like I did and are looking for a good M/F/M menage and or romance ? My opinion is Keep Looking..... Coz the has sex ( more talked about than actual) but little to no romance...

3.5 stars.

After really enjoying the first book in this series (Coral-600), I was intrigued to see what happened next with Coral’s human roommate, Paisley. And for the most part this book is every bit as enjoyable as the first. The chemistry between Paisley, Jon and Ben is scorching, the sex is hot and there’s plenty of humour to keep this deeper, more involved plot ticking along.

Paisley is a strong, compelling character. Her failed marriage has left her avoiding love, though she still enjoys sex. Lots of sex. Preferably with strangers. She’s not interested in a relationship, since that only leads to hurt. So while the idea of hooking up with Jon and Ben definitely appeals, the idea of more terrifies her.

Jon and Ben are quite the pair. Jon isn’t human, but then Ben’s not entirely organic either, yet there’s no denying that they are both strong characters with plenty of humanity. I would have liked to have known more about both of them, because what little we learn only left me more intrigued – especially about Jon. But then this book isn’t really big on world-building or fleshing out character’s pasts beyond what is absolutely necessary. There’s a city and a palace and a king and queen, but I have no idea where any of this is, if it’s even in our world (although Japan is mentioned), or what century it’s all set in. Ben and Jon have a military past, but I have no idea of the war. However, this only really bothered me after I’d finished the book and was looking back, because the story itself is mainly about the characters and they definitely held my attention.

As hot as the ménage scenes were between Paisley, Jon and Ben, I have to admit that at first things were a little uncomfortable for me. Mostly because while Paisley wanted them physically, her head is definitely on a different track. I found it hard to work out what Paisley wanted, so at times, although she’s responding to both men, it felt a little more coerced than I would have liked. Thankfully that does go away and Paisley is definitely on board for most of their fun. I loved the relationship between Ben and Jon too, even if Ben’s habit of talking about Jon as if he wasn’t there (and likewise Paisley too) was kind of annoying. The sex – while hot – also felt a touch repetitive, since the second encounter was really similar to the first, which was an unexpected shame.

The plot itself doesn’t just revolve around sex – shocking! In fact, when Paisley’s not thinking about her two men, she’s actually quite busy, working with Coral, trying to find the source of the anti-mech propaganda. Much as I enjoyed this side of things, there were a couple of leaps of logic that came conveniently out of nowhere to help solve everything. It tended to leave me scratching my head rather than going with the flow, and I found it a bit jolting.

Overall, though, this was an enjoyable piece of sexy sci-fi, that makes a solid effort at expanding the story beyond the bedroom. Although it would have been nice to have had a bit more world-building and to have known more about Jon and Ben, on the whole I liked it. I hope there’s still more to come from this series.

Previously reviewed on The Good, The Bad, and The Unread:

I was highly intrigued by the world portrayed in the first book of this series, and keenly grabbed this next instalment to learn more about the people and situations that had been set up for us. Coral, the heroine of the previous book, has pioneered the concept that some androids are just as entitled to human rights as the actual humans they work for and with, but now the focus turns to her entirely-human former roommate, Paisley.

Before landing a position working as a cleaner for the royal family, Paisley flitted from job to job, all the while trying to deal with her abusive husband. Now single, and respected by her colleagues, as well as those she works with outside the palace, Paisley is a bit of a good-time girl, but manages to keep her work and her social life separate until the day a chance encounter with two guests at a palace dinner ends up losing her her job. Fortunately, Coral is on hand to help her out, finding Paisley both a place to stay – rooming next to the two dinner guests who caused her problem in the first place – as well as a new employer – in the government department responsible for deciding which androids are entitled to a Certificate of Humanity.

Unfortunately for all our protagonists, anti-android sentiments are on the increase, not just amongst the ordinary people who resent the possibility of paying wages to the machines that previously served them for free, but also in the very department where Paisley is employed and where Coral lends her expertise as a contractor. Fortunately for the two women, Paisley’s neighbours are former army buddies of Coral’s partner and have very good reasons to get involved in the counter-offensive against the protesters and, more especially those in power whipping resentments up into frenzy and riots.

While I liked Ben, the enhanced human, and Jon, the former pleasure bot, for me this story was all about the women. Not just Paisley and Coral, but also the queen, Miss Matilda – Paisley’s boss at the palace, who sticks by her even after she loses her job – and the reporter who insists her cameraman keeps filming in the midst of a riot and insists on interviewing everyone she can get close enough too. Not that the romance between Paisley, Ben and Jon wasn’t satisfying, and it was good to see how Coral and Quinn’s relationship had progressed, but I much preferred watching the political upheavals unfolding, and then being untangled by the women.

I really hope this series continues one way or another as I’m keen to see more of our heroines and to watch the situations they’ve set up develop further.

Interlocking Hearts is the second book in the DMA Files by Roxy Mews. In the first book, Coral-600, we were introduced to the main characters, Paisley, Quinn and Coral; and what it means to be human. Interlocking Hearts follows Paisley, Coral’s best friend, who is trying to find her place after her friend decides to take on the human world. I believe that this should not be read alone as it ties in with Coral-600.
After reading about Paisley in the first book I was interested in her story as she had some mystery to her. She hid behind her…outgoing personality…so strongly you couldn’t help but want to peel back the layers. Paisley knows what she does and does not want out of life and love has no place in hers. Jon and Ben are roommates and best friends with Quinn, Coral’s boyfriend. With Coral taking on the government to grant humanoids humanity, they find themselves up against an enemy they were not totally prepared for. Jon and Ben are there to find out who is behind the Anti-Mech protests and suspect it is an inside job. Jon in his former life was a pleasure bot who was abused and mistreated by his former owners; whereas Ben has had the same treatments that Quinn underwent. Did I mention they enjoy sharing?
Paisley sets out to seduce Mr. Hottie, aka Ben, before she realizes that Ben and Jon come as a package deal. But what better way to satisfy her hunger than between these two sexy men. But as they get to know one another they realize their attraction runs so much deeper. As Paisley joins Coral in helping give robots human rights, she starts to see she wants more; love, passion, and a future.
I enjoyed this novel because we got to delve deeper into the humanoids and who they are. I thought it was a perfect edition to The DMA Files Series. Paisley is a woman who is not afraid of who she and so many of us can relate to her. The tension between the trio, Jon, Paisley, and Ben kept me intrigued until the last page. The three are a perfect together as they all balance each other out. Ben is the serious and understanding one, Jon’s the protective and in-your-face one, and Paisley is the fun-loving and cautious all help each other heal the wounds that never seemed to close. It is a great continuation to this series and I sincerely hope there is another novel to the series. Plus I would not mind getting to know Jon a bit more. I think it is the whole robohippie thing he has going on. Yum!

I was given a copy of this book as a gift from The JeepDiva in exchange for an honest review. The opinions and ratings are my own and I was in no way compensated for my review.

Paisley Compton uses her sexuality as a shield, Ben jumps on the chance to get Jon his certificate of humanity and Jon trusts no one. They will have to risk everything to foil an Anti-Mech plot in this exciting sci-fi romance.

Jon’s been used and abused by his former owners so he’s determined to get to the bottom of the sexy mystery wrapped in a maid’s uniform who is distracting Ben and the readers can’t help but be charmed by this threesome as their attraction sparks unexpected new conduits among them. The chemistry sizzles with lots of heat and shorts quite a few circuits with some scorching sex scenes, but having a relationship is a bit of a stretch for these three as some emotional issues and personal demons get in the way. These strong, charismatic characters delight readers with lots of humor and their special situation which of course adds spice as well as depth to the story while the steady to fast paced plot draws readers in with lots of suspense, excitement and romance.

Anticipation builds throughout the story as Paisley lands in various humorous situations as she tries her best to fight the sparks that she feels for Jon and Ben and spine tingling suspense builds as they try to discover just who is behind the Anti-Mech movement and just what it means for Paisley and her friends. The intriguing events keep the readers hanging on every word as the well written scenes capture the imagination and bring the story to life.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure that I was going to like this one, but I really enjoy the Hart Clan Hybrid series, so I decided to give it a try and I quite surprised by the interesting and different world that I found myself in which kept me quite enthralled until the very end. I haven’t read the first one yet and it was obvious that I missed a few things but not anything that kept me from enjoying this one and I can’t wait to read the next one.
