This book was very educational. I’ve only used two short row methods in knitting so I enjoyed learning about the other parts. The patterns were a little underwhelming, however.
I have close to 20:20 vision but found the font of this book in the introduction and conclusion sections in particular was too pale and small, and other sections of text were also very hard to read due to font size and contrast. The typeface/fonts were all different throughout the book. Some pages especially the technique instructional pages the font was really large but then explanatory text was small. Some odd editing choices.
The content itself I'm sure is good as it goes into a bit of detail about different short rown techniques, the patterns seem fine but not out of the ordinary. I guess for me I found the presentation of the material bothered me so I wasn't inclined to spend a lot of time on this book. Probably not one I'd come back to as a first resource.
Discusses different short row methods: Wrap and turn Yarn over German Japanese Twin stitch
One thing I learnt Japanese method tidy for stst, garter and reverse stocking st Twin st method is mainly for stst
This book exhaustively shows how to do every kind of short-row method I've ever heard of. The explanations and pictures are very clear. She also explains the pros and cons of each method.
There are also lots of projects that incorporate short-rows to motivate you to practice.
I didn't make any of the projects, but I read every technique explanation. If you want to up your short-row technique, read this book (and practice.)
This is a learning book with beautiful patterns. I'm already half way through a hat and have plans for more hats and at least two of the shawl/scarf patterns!
I have knit for several years and avoided items with short row shaping, now with this great book of instructions, I have added to my skill set. And it is fun to see the shaping taking place.
If you're interested in learning how to work short rows, this book will show you the different methods of knitting short rows and will teach you how to know which method to use when working a project. There are many different projects to choose from including hats, scarves, shawls, vests, cowls, mitts, and sweaters.
I have a lot of knitting books, this is the only one to show more than one method for short rows. I've used wrap and turn in the past and a recent project used twin stitch, which I loved. Now I've got more options to try and I like many of the patterns that are in the book too which is a bonus. I bought this for the techniques.
So now I know what a short row is and why to do it I have seen a few ways and some patterns using it. But the drawings are not good enough fir me to really understand the method. Even the drawing of the casting on technique that I use is not the best.
I appreciated the explanation of when the different techniques were most/least appropriate, but found the format (paragraphs) a little hard for me and would have preferred the information in a table.
Great book! Plenty of cool designs (17), and the book is available in ebook format.
The book is divided into chapters by short-row knitting method (5), averaging 3-4 patterns per chapter. All designs are geared toward women, but the hats, scarf and cowl could be considered unisex.
I like nearly all the patterns, but my faves are the Slices Shawl, Rumble Strips Scarf, Curve Wrap Cardi, Buttonside Sweater, Earlappe Hat, Radial Raglan, and Welts Apart Cowl.
this is a great combo of tutorials on the different kinds of short rows + pretty patterns using them. i could see owning this digitally to help me expand my short row skills.
