Told through the voice of Sojo herself, this creative and hilarious book is sure to entertain readers of all ages. Often overshadowed by her sister, Anna, Sojo is surprised to be chosen for the team that will cross the Arctic. As a fan of Pam Flowers and especially her book, "Big Enough Anna," I found this entertaining, amusing, and suspenseful.

I have met the author, Pam Flowers, as I hosted a visit with her for my school district. Our students were fascinated by her stories of Alaska, her travels and her sled dog who accompanied her. I was most interested in her; independence, sense of adventure and perseverance as I heard her talk about her life in Alaska and her many travels.
She has written several books about her life in Alaska and her sled dog experiences. Pam Flowers successfully completed the first solo journey by a woman and the first solo by an American across 2,500 miles of Arctic America when she replicated the trip made by the Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen to the Canadian Arctic village of Repulse Bay.
This book Sojo; Memoirs of a Reluctant Sled Dog recounts this journey as told by sled dog, Sojo who actually participated in this trek. Sojo leaves nothing to the imagination recounting every success and challenge, and sometimes scary, details.
Elementary and middle school level students will enjoy this adventure. The book would also lend itself to a read aloud for younger elementary students. Illustrations by Bill Farnsworth add a warmness that enhances the endearing qualities of the canines carrying the weight of this journey.
I highly recommend this book and encourage school librarians to include it in their elementary and middle school collections.
