Stephen Arroyo (born October 6, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American author and astrologer.[1]
Arroyo has written seven books on psychologically oriented astrology which outline his theory that the individual’s experience of the Solar System’s impacts on their personal energy field, both psychological and physical. His works recast astrological concepts in psychological terms, and reject what he perceives as the fatalism and negativity of old-fashioned astrology. His books have now been translated into 20 languages.
This is an insightful read for anyone interested in the psychological implications and applications of astrology.
I found the writing style (more so in the second half of the book) very lucid and engaging, with a lot of information packed into the concise classifications and descriptions of energy types and their applications/manifestations.
I especially liked the bit about the houses and the elements. I think the keywords used by Arroyo are very efficient and meaningful.
What I was expecting more of, were inputs regarding what kinds of activities one can get involved in if one wishes to consciously develop the ability to tune into the energy of an element that is lacking in their chart. Arroyo delves into this very briefly, so my curiosity is yet to be satisfied (would've been a 5 star rating otherwise). But it's definitely a book worth reading.
- [ ] A seminal text!!!!! So so helpful to read after chaplaincy and my discovery which Armaan started and alchemy whipped into a frenzy that everything is energy!

Celebrity- beauty, image, status) Prologue xv- why astro has gained popularity recently- “I think part of the answer lies in the fact that western culture no longer has any viable mythology to sustain it. Myth always serves as a Vitalizing force in any culture by showing man’s relationship to a larger, more universal reality. People have always needed a pattern of order to guide their collective lives and to infuse their indiv experience with meaning”- Joseph Campbell 3 essential functions of myth “to elicit a sense of awe, to render a cosmology, and to initiate the individual into the realities of his own psyche” “man cannot maintain himself in the universe without belief in some arrangement of the general inheritance of myth. In fact, the fullness of his life would even seem to stand in direct ratio to the depth and range not of his rational thought, but of his local mythology” xvi - [ ] Cultural zeitgeist of separation- from nature other self (supports colonialism) (5) - [ ] Soul-psyche- the deepest source of life within man. Acausality synchronicity > causality, law of correspondences- if true nature is acausal rather synchronous, points to a more eastern approach- harmony open receptiveness go with flow > violent controlling contorting narratives and colonial bending reality to my will (which causes suffering and doesn’t really work- suffering meaning that it’s false and doesn’t hold up and isn’t really working?) what to DO then if we’re in this acausal synchronous reality instead? Do music and it will come? b-u > t-d seems to be the slogan of the age! - [ ] Also entrenched Critical thinking is a shame it makes me glad I didn’t learn it in undergrad/wasn’t that educated which I used to be in anguish over- you don’t immerse yourself in anything believing game style it’s all holding at a distance so you can tear it apart. Is it really good to be skeptical? Or can you not even experience the true nature/merit of the thing if you never let yourself join with it? Would be sad to live like that and not be able to immerse esp with art - [ ] My reviews r like the useless tree I love it rn my existence is possibly too much like that but it’s pendulum and okay for now after an overly landscaped life - [ ] Ruperti physician astrologer “in this way modern astrology betrays its ancient heritage to the fetish of scientific respectability” (43) LMAOO GOTDAM @@@@@ psychology - [ ] Therapy danger of helping others become themselves instead of doing that for yourself - [ ] 52- took that can help them penetrate below the surface of ego self deception and social roles - [ ] 62 jung the significance of the unconscious in indiv education “for the day will inevitably come when what the educator teaches by word of mouth no longer works, but only what he is. Every educator — and I use the term in its widest sense— should constantly ask himself whether he is actually fulfilling his teachings in his own person and in his own life, to the best of his knowledge and with a clear conscience. Psychotherapy has taught us that in the final reckoning it is not knowledge, not technical skill that has a curative effect, but the personality of the doctor. And it is the same with education: it presupposes self-education” WTF I SAY THIS TOOOOOOOOOO - [ ] 98 oversensitivity to threat dulls when you have more alignment and self trust - [ ] the power of water, an 11th c. Chinese scholar “of all the elements, the Sage should take water as his preceptor. Water is yielding but all-conquering. Water extinguished Fire, or finding itself likely to be defeated, escapes as steam and reforms. Water washes away soft Earth or, when confronted by rocks, seeks a way around…It saturates the atmosphere so that Wind dies. Water gives way to obstacles with deceptive humility, for no power can prevent it following its destined course to the sea. Water conquers by yielding; it never attacks but always wins the last battle” (from John Blofeld’s The Wheel of Life p78) (98) I like this counter to water being oversensitive and fragile. And the inevitability of ending up where I need to be. “Like the river flows, surely to the sea” from can’t help falling in love with you - [ ] “For it is the unconscious assumption of what is particularly real and what isn’t that determines how the person will focus his energy” (101) - [ ] (111) elemental imbalances show up as problems that have long term perplexed people - [ ] outlets for the right kind of energy flow. You need to feed/recharge your energy field thru intensive relationship, tuning in consciously to the required energies or thru specific types of activities in everyday life (103) to buffer against the devitalizing demands of daily life - [ ] Also bring in close contact with that element can help. - [ ] “A smooth flow of feeling sensitivity like a waterfall in cancers, the sudden change of polarity similar to electrical storms in Aquarius” (104) - [ ] “The planets’ positions according to the elements (without regard to the aspects) reveal the general attunement and tone of energy release in the individual, whereas each close aspect indicates a specific dynamic interchange of energy within the person” (129) - [ ] Squares and challenging aspects are helpful because they require expansion to accommodate both warring needs- require creativity and growth in awareness of life’s complexities. These tensions can be productive and CREATIVE!!!!!!!! Ex writing a song about a complex feeling - [ ] Synastry with squares “but there is also more likelihood for growth arising out of the need to broaden the dimension of experience represented in order to encompass both factors involved in a certain conflict…inner tension forces one to act and to produce, as well as to grow in awareness of life’s complexity[] “stressful” aspects show conflicting or contradictory motives or urges, both simultaneously seeking expression and both interfering with each other” (129) - [ ] Difficult aspects are all about CREATIVE SELF EXPRESSION!!!!! Ifs how to give voice to multiple contrasting needs - [ ] “Will invariably have to fulfill both needs and express both urges if he is to feel that he’s living a full life…doesn’t mean he’ll succeed in his attempts to resolve the dilemma, but merely that the attempt to do so is a major life challenge through which he can broaden his understanding of himself and of life in general…jung- a true conflict is never resolvable on the same level of consciousness where is it experienced. It can only be outgrown. When the indiv has grown in awareness to the point where both sides of a conflict are seen and accepted, the experience of conflict can begin to dissolve” (133) about the CREATIVE process! - [ ] Saturn self blocking like when ur stressed about being late every light is red or if you desp want a crush there are none: “Jupiter in Leo indicates that a dramatic, fiery, rather flamboyant mode of self expression would be needed to give one a sense of inner faith and confidence. Likewise, Saturn in Leo also indicates one who at least subconsciously wants to express himself this way; but the desire is usually too rigid, too self centered, too involved with one’s ego identity, thus creating a fear of failure or vulnerability that can cripple one’s self confidence. Bc of this fear, one tends to restrict oneself or to overly discipline oneself in this area, an effort that aggravates an already vicious circle of inner frustration. If, on the other hand, the individual will accept the fact that they desperately need to express that energy, no matter what effort it requires, the first step toward getting the energy flowing will have been taken. But this step is impossible without realizing that the need so strongly felt is a manifestation of life’s need to express itself rather than simply a personal “hang up.” Saturns element shows where one needs to develop trust in a greater power than mere ego. Both Jupiter and Saturn in a particular element indicate a great need for expression in that particular mode, but the quality of energy release is very different. Jupiter- flow rather spontaneously, excessively Saturn- conscientious effort and patient work at self-disciplined action” (143) - [ ] “Just as a hungry person soon gets desperate and will do almost anything for food, so any aspect of man’s fourfold nature begins to rebel and to demand feeding and attention if it is being neglected” (155) - [ ] As you grow in awareness you can become nourished with more refined and subtle energy- tune into your energy requirements and Satisfy them in simple direct ways with full awareness of what you’re doing and why (155)
The first part of the book is an interesting and unique approach to counseling. However, I enjoyed and engaged more with the second part, where Arroyo presents a detailed and insightful examination of the elemental qualities through the natal chart. Highly recommended it to anyone who is interested in learning some basics about astrology.
I only read the first part of this book. This part suggests that the study of astrology is a study of human personality, wholeness, and systemic understanding. It even suggests that astrology can be an applied tool in humanistic psychology (chapter 6), providing a foundation for humanistic analysis. Often relying on existential therapy, people inevitably experience negativity and absurdity.
The application of astrology can be linked to psychological counseling. Astrology helps individuals see their true selves, rather than self-deceptive patterns. It also enables individuals to recognize their potential and directions for development. More importantly, astrology allows people to understand events in their lives and the people they meet in a broader context, imparting a sense of patient waiting, often referred to as "keeping up with the rhythm of the divine."
The benefits brought about by these astrological studies provide individuals with greater insights and a sense of humor.
At the same time, the field of education could benefit from astrology. Education relies too heavily on single grading and individual performance. The involvement of astrology can help teachers discover the multidimensionality and richness of a student.
In conclusion, I agree with the author's viewpoint. Although the factual basis of astrology may not be presented in detail before us, leading us to categorize it as mysticism, the operational methods of astrology make people feel the inner potential of life. It allows individuals to discover "truths" about themselves that they are unwilling to admit, truths that are often overlooked due to our weaknesses and laziness.
Astrology also connects people with nature and the universe. Regardless, humans live between nature and the universe, both of which influence people, and people also influence nature and the universe.
I also strongly support the introduction of astrology in the field of education and humanistic psychology. Such an approach helps people better understand human diversity and our own strengths. We have our limitations, but at the same time, we possess powerful human capabilities.
A wonderful read. One of the first astrology compendiums to give me a concise definition and explanation of the signs, their relationship to one another, and their involvement in the development of modern psychoanalysis. This was one of the first astrology books my mother ever read. It is quite ahead of its time (1975), or maybe I don’t know enough about this moment in history to fit it in. Would read again.
After reading through all the chronically generic, repetitive, stereotypical astrology guides this was my first encounter with what felt like a scientific representation of astrology. I had more confidence in my belief of the practice after this. Highly informative, stimulating and useful for people who want to take astrology seriously.
Fascinating read on Astrology from an energetic perspective. Although the first part of the book makes a compelling argument on the relevance and importance of Astrology as an empirical, yet archetypal system to understand human psyche and the development of different personality types, it was on the second half of the book that I resonated most with Arroyo’s ideas.
To perceive the elements as much more than symbols or qualities and relate to them as ever-flowing and interactive energy patterns was a big realization for me. For instance, the description of cardinal energy as centrifugal, the fixed energy as centripetal, and the mutable energy as spiralic makes a lot of sense and gives me a lot of visual stimulus to work with. In addition, the key-work system Arroyo proposes around the concepts of action (angular houses), security (succedent houses) and learning (cadent houses), combined with the 4 levels of experience symbolized by the elements (soul & emotional, material, identity, and social & intellectual) have been really helpful to acquire a deeper understanding of the houses.
I believe this is one book I will keep on referring back to time and time again until these ideas really take root in my mind and I begin experiencing them in hands-on practice. As an author, Arroyo demonstrates great eloquence and argumentation power, but the reading to me felt a bit dryer and less humorous and engaging than other Astrology books I've read. The content is well worth the attention though and I am grateful to have learned about his work.
Elements Air, Earth, Fire and Water as viewed through the natal charts astrological composition. Especially interesting and gave me pause for thought was the idea the the Element of the Acendent is the strongest instinctual drive/balencer/opposition to the Sun element. I'm a Capricorn Sun element earth with a Librian Asc. element air. I have been struggling with a huge sense of ungroundedness all my life and quite simply went 'ahhh' when studying this book.
