The Border #1-8

The Border: The Complete Series

Rate this book
“The stag-headed man is back. He needs more hearts for his collection.” When Ben Freeman returns home after many years on the road, he immediately starts causing trouble. He knows exactly what his family thinks of him, but he doesn't care. He knows they suspect him of being a killer, responsible for several brutal murders during his previous visit. Ben, however, is more interested in something that happened at a remote farmhouse when he was a teenager, something that first hinted at the existence of a place known as the Border. And this time, he's not willing to ignore the evil that hides beneath the town. After years of ignoring the truth, the residents of Bowley must finally face the darkness that waits in the shadows. The stag-headed man is on the loose again, hunting for human hearts to add to his collection. The ghost of a deal girl has started appearing to some of the locals, warning of terrible consequences if crimes remain unpunished. And deep down beneath the town, another girl discovers the dark secret that keeps the town safe, and finds a jar of hearts stretching back many decades. The Border is a horror thriller about a family's search for the truth, and about a town gripped by the possibility that something horrific lurks beneath their feet. Originally published in serial form, the entire story is now available in this omnibus edition for the first time.

Good start, but then jumped the shark

This book had a great start, but approximately halfway through jumped the shark and steadily became increasingly outlandish. All of the review comments on poor editing are correct; this compilation would have benefited greatly by allowing an English major to go through and cut many of the extraneous material. Also, there are some unnecessary subplots that make you wonder if the author was paid by the word.

I loved this book. Literally the only thing I would complain about would be that it needs more descriptions of the characters, I like being able to have a good visualization of the people I'm reading about. Otherwise, great story, great pace, thoroughly enjoyable and original.

I've only recently discovered Amy Cross. Geez, have I missed something!

This is sharp and epic horror, with shades of Bentley Little and Stephen King, yet a style all her own. The characters live and breathe. The horror itself is violent and glistening.

This isn't for the faint of heart.

Truly, there's nothing subtle about the author's writing. If you think a scene is going to involve a knife in the gut, it probably will. Just be prepared that it might include a slashed throat and body parts that should never be outside the body.

Good horror. I want to read more of her work.

(Note: There were a few minor editing issues. I almost marked down a star for them, but decided they were minor enough that they didn't truly mar the story.)

The truth will be so horrifying, you won't want to know it...

I've moved around quite a bit, and stayed for a time in my share of small towns. They're usually charming places, with their own unique features and amusing quirks.

Getting to know people in the community can be surprising, and sometimes disturbing. In a small town, everyone seems to know who you are and most have something pleasant to say to you when you meet them. At least, at first.

I have to admit that no matter how friendly and welcoming they seem, there have been times that my initial unease has turned to dread. I've sensed that there's some history, some activities townies don't want outsiders to know about, things they don't want to acknowledge.

Bowley is that sort of town. Shocking murders happen there, now and then. But, even though they each have distinct similarities and have occurred over a span of years, somehow, the killer or killers have never been caught. And, for the most part, the police and citizens of Bowley aren't overly concerned.

Life goes on, right? At least for some.

The Border started out great, then as you keep going it gets "slow" and there are subplots that don't really add to the story. There also needs to be more explaination of the main characters before you get basically to the end of book. The part with the marriage issues between Beth & her husband Bob could have totally been left out of the book and it wouldn't have taken away from the main storyline. And there could have been reference to when it all began and there should have been more of a finality that it was completely over or at least who were the actual people behind the whole thing. Left to many unanswered questions.

This was a good story by Amy Cross and I really did enjoy it. The only problem I found was that there were so many characters, I had to sometimes stop and think back to who they were. That's not a big problem though. It is a long book but that never slows me down. I think anyone would enjoy reading this book. It's a bit different and enjoyable.

Excellent read

Completely drew me in to the point I got up extra early the next day to finish it. A couple of mistakes which were annoying, the daughters age changes and a name changes in one line but certainly not enough to detract from such a brilliant story.

Yet another spellbinding horror from Amy Cross. A page Turner if there ever was one and finally a book with so many characters without getting them all mixed up and impossible to keep track of. This town has terrifying secrets and they're well worth the 780 pages.

Absolutely the most BORING book I've ever had the displeasure of reading. I finished this book by the Grace of God. I had my patience tested on this book. I just don't understand all the good reviews for it which is I got suckered into reading this.

Good story!

There are a lot of characters to keep up with, but it’s well worth the read.
A small sleepy town has a series of murders spaced over years. In this town there is a legend pd a stage headed man that kills.

Actually a good story but the editing issues and character mistakes let it down. Also happened in another book by the same author - needs a good proof reader! 3.5 stars probably

Hard to put down

I was pleasantly surprised with how good this book is. There are several characters to follow but they're well fleshed out so there's really no getting people mixed up. I couldn't help severely disliking a couple of them, but again, they felt very real, except for a few seriously moronic decisions. Editing wise, there aren't too many grammatical errors, names were given to the wrong character twice that I can remember and there was a repeat of the same sentence once. Overall a really good read. Don't let the page count scare you off, the story moved quickly and it didn't feel like I was reading a long book.

A very good story with plenty of mystery, twists and turns.

An ordinary town with a terrible secret...

I liked the concept and the cast of characters, both good and bad, which made for an intriguing read. A great pace and writing style (despite the typos) that made for a compelling tale.

One to make you shudder and think about the depths that humankind is willing to go.

Recommended.
