A dramatic and fast-paced new series, perfect for fans Michelle Paver, Gill Lewis and the Warriors series.
Kris Humphrey is the author of the Guardians of the Wild fantasy series for young readers.
Hailing from a medium-sized city in the far south-west of England, Kris grew up with the sea on one side and the beautiful bleakness of Dartmoor on the other. Despite moving around the country and doing his fair share of interesting jobs (cinema projectionist, blood factory technician, bookseller...) he has always been writing - or at least thinking about writing - or at least pretending to be thinking about writing. In 2012 Kris graduated from the MA in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University, winning the award for Most Promising Writer. He now lives in south-east London.
This was a recommendation from my younger sister. It was enjoyable enough, although it being the third in a series probably didn't help anything. It was also definitely a book aimed at her age range or just above (she's nine).
I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review “Gathering Voices” is a welcome new instalment in the fast-paced “Guardians of the Wild” series, with a new protagonist Whisperer, Mika, and her familiar, the arctic fox Star. This book starts in a bunker in a devastated city occupied by the demon Narlaws, with Mika and her friends being the only survivors. Although only partially trained, Mika makes a huge breakthrough with her Whispering skills that could change the outcome of the war, and save the kingdom of Meridina – but only if she is able to get to the capital to share her discovery with the other Whisperers. The journey is fraught with danger, and Mika has to accept friends’ sacrifices to achieve her mission. She matures as she travels, and learns how to harness her emotions to strengthen her Whispering skills. Dawn, the palace Whisperer, from the previous books is back – with a much more physically active role this time – as is Princess Ona, who was abducted by a Narlaw spy in the last book. The action never lets up, and the book ends far too soon. I eagerly await the next instalment.
Another fast paced book with a new protagonist’s journey to follow. Mika isn’t as experienced as some of the others but when she makes an amazing discovery about her powers and how to use it properly, everyone realises that this could be the key to saving the kingdom from the Narlaw. The journey requires some sacrifices and that’s why it’s so crucial that the plan is successful. With Mika maturing as the journey takes them ahead and facing different challenges, she has a chance of being of the more powerful whisperers. Dawn was a slight irritation in this book, not doing what she was suppose to be doing, especially after the mistake that the made of putting someone important in danger.
I received this as an e-galley via Netgalley and I am happy to say that this book matches up to the preceding stories in the series. Each of the books deals with one of the 'Whisperers', who together with their animal companions protect the kingdom. However after a gap of many years the country is one again under threat from demons who could destroy everything. Whilst the books can be read individually it is probably best to read in order so that you can follow the plot lines. Definitely a series that you keep reading to the end.

Gathering Voices written by Kris Humphrey
Published by Stripes in 2016 ( read via NetGalley)
Illustrated by Chellie Carroll 224 pages in paperback with illustrations **** This is the third book in the Guardians of the Wild series by Kris Humphrey. (A Whisper of Wolves and Warning Cry are both reviewed on this site). It will help to read them in order – certain references will make more sense – but it’s fairly easy to work things out by various clues. This time Mika the central character has an Arctic fox, Star, as her companion.
As the overall story is coming towards a conclusion (in book four), events are becoming more dramatic. There’s a strong sense of peril throughout – and good deal of challenge for Mika to deal with. Friends will make sacrifices to help the cause – and one is truly poignant.
A pleasing sense of environment, as seen on the bold and attractive cover, infuses the story. The bringing together of people from a variety of backgrounds to defeat an evil that threatens them all is a heartening feature of these books. Why wouldn’t you like a kind of multicultural war on misery and greed?
The magical aspects include a range of tactics and it’s good to see characters you like grow and develop their skills. There are set-backs and at least one whoa-I-didn’t-see-that-coming moment (for me, anyway.)
In short: fast-paced fantasy adventure with a taste of nature - ideal for a quick read. The publishers recommend nine and up but some fluent younger readers might well enjoy them.
