'Jhep' was the first historical novel written by N.S. Inamdar. It is a biography of Trimbakji Dengle who initially worked as a messenger for Peshwa Bajirao II and as he won the Peshwa's trust, he was later promoted to become his chief minister (karbhari). While the Maratha empire was seeing its downfall, Trimbakji was still loyal to the Peshwa and did everything he could to save the Maratha empire. The book beautifully explains why Trimbakji struggles for saving the Maratha empire from the British rule even when there is little hope. On becoming the chief minister, Trimbakji brilliantly planned a coalition with the kings of different states. He also won the trust and friendship of Gangadhar Shastri, who was the chief minister of the Gaikwads. With his plans taking form, the British feared that their establishing rule would be overthrown if all the kings and Peshwa united against them.
Thus, the British planned to arrest Trimbakji Dengle by framing him in a crime.

The book wonderfully describes Trimbakji's character, body language. his strictness, discipline, dedication towards the adminsitration of the Maratha empire, witty argumentation with the British resident Elphinstone (pronounced by the Marathas at that time as 'Alpishton'). The book is a must read for all history lovers.

It is evident how difficult it would have been to write this book about a "karbhari" of the Peshwa regime, owing to the fact that hardly any accounts of his personal life are available. But it is N. S. Inamdar after all, and the book is mind-blowing as expected. Tryambakji is loyal to a fault, an it also makes you angry at the character for giving up his life for a lost cause. The book also highlights the fact that our own people have always been responsible for our doom.
