Book one in the Remnants trilogy. Book two will be available Spring 2017.
I've enjoyed Strong's short stories/novellas and wanted to see how he does in long form. Plus I do enjoy a good post apocalyptic story. And, after reading this, it seems that he is quite consistent despite the page count. He puts out solidly entertaining fairly original stories. Not great, but consistently good. What prevents this book in particular from achieving greatness are several things...the blandness of characters might be first and foremost, they are all perfectly nice individuals, but who wants to read about nice, it's so...unexciting. They just come across as an underdeveloped humorless bunch, no charisma or something. Maybe at part it's to do with their age, 26 and under. Anyway, the plot is something of a mash up...the world ends suddenly and at first seemingly via technological failure then zombies then nightmarish creatures then the story takes a positively scifi ish turn leaving the entire thing sequel ready and waiting, although I don't believe there ever was one. Things do get explained in the end, it is a self contained story, it just has an episodic vibe to it. Pacing is great, very dynamic, the narrative moves along very quickly, it entertains consistently, so it does make for a fun undemanding read. Strong's writing shows talent for story crafting and with more character work, his novels would really engage, there is a lot of potential, even as is it's still well worth the time. Plus the author seems like a really nice guy, really connecting with readers.
I had no idea what to expect after reading Anthony M Strongs15 book series in John Decker Series but wow can I say hold your breath and don’t breathe until you are finished. I just knew there had to be hope at the end of this story. So intense!
Certainly not the first book I have read with this type of storyline but the author has a way of seeing things and a style of writing that catches you up and reels you right in and holds you tight, breathless. Many reviews of books state "could not put this one down" but in this case, I couldn't. I did tell myself several times, just a few pages more. That turned into a few chapters more and then ... I was done. I am very much looking forward to book 2. The main characters are written so believably and real that I am completely invested in their story. Especially when one is in dire straights. Does it work out?? I have to know.
Could not finish. Couldn't get very far into the book. It's one of those where the writer puts words on paper but doesn't stop to get into the scene and imagine it happening in real time. There are monsters, they are hunting for humans to eat, yet the characters spend time making noise before "sneaking" away? They kill a few of the monsters, but there are more nearby, they have to get away before alerting the other monsters to their presence, yet the writer has one character stop and sob on another character's shoulder? Are they both crazy? No, it's just another case of "words before plot".
I was afraid this was another Walking Dead rehash, but it’s a great first hand perspective of how normal people suddenly wake up to find a world without phones, tv, internet, and so many other technologies we take for granted. The story adds layer after layer of puzzles and odd events until you reach the end and are thrown for another totally unexpected twist. I’m going to read its sequel immediately—can’t wait to see where the story takes us next!
Whilst I mostly enjoyed this story, despite it feeling rushed in places and the protagonists making questionable decisions, the lead character really grated on me. Judgemental and critical of anyone's ideas other than his own, I just couldn't care enough about him to want him to survive the apocalypse. So will I struggle through the sequel? Probably not, unless I hear he suffers a painful end. In which case, I'll gladly read all about it.
This is the first book of a two-part collection. I have seen enough zombie-like media, and I didn't feel that this book offered anything new. If you like this type of genre, you might enjoy this book. I think the second book might resolve questions left unanswered, but my interest level is not there.
Not my usual reading Sci Fi post Apocalyptic but must admit found this book action packed and totally absorbing reading. Full of twist and turns keeping you on edge to the very end. Leaving you with the anticipation of more to come, have the next book ready so will be reading it soon. Highly recommended well worth the read
I love Anthony Strong's characters (can you say John Decker?), his writing style that pulls the reader inside the story, the characters, and their lives. How he makes the unfathomable believable is a treasure. This book is no different. Read it. And prepare to realize you're either holding your breath or that your jaw has dropped.
What a he'll of a story. It blew my mind about three quarters of the way through. Mr Strong has an immense imagination. Great story and great characters. I recommend to all fiction lovers.
A good read, plausible characters that you can care about. The ending? is a bit deux ex machina, but it was completely unexpected, and takes the story in an entirely different direction. Recommended. Will more than likely purchase the second book when published .
Hayden Stone is travelling to New York, when strange events send the earth into crisis, as people disappear and the power goes off. Trapped in a strange new world, Hayden and friends travel to New Haven looking for answers and salvation. Good story, with a twist at the end.
For a fairly new author, these books are well worth reading. This book was my first and I enjoyed it a great deal. Not my normal type of book, but I may switch genre's now.
The world ended on a mild Tuesday… With its break-neck pace and memorable characters, I was completely absorbed by this post-apocalyptic thriller. Creepy and disturbing, this take on zombies left me looking over my shoulder long after I turned the last page. It’s absolutely gory, but I didn’t find it to be gratuitous - I’ve never picked up a book about zombies or monsters or things that go bump in the night without a certain level of expectation that it won’t be all sweet scents and pretty colours. In this case, I found Anthony M Strong maintains a fair balance of graphic description without crossing the line to writing for sheer shock value. With the suspense escalating as the motley crew of survivors make their way to New Haven, following the advice being sent to them in cryptic texts that appear to be from Hayden’s brother, I really wasn’t sure what to make of the abrupt change of direction in the last chapter. With everything I understood to be true profoundly shifted, the final twist left me more than a little anxious for another installment. Please note I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was a great book! I must confess that I battled to get into it, but once I passes chapter 10 I was fully stuck. I love the suspense and action, it keeps you on your seat. And there were so many twist, just when you think they are all save, something else takes them by surprise. This is not your normal end of the world book. I am not normally fan of these types of books, but this one was more about the people trying to survive then the actual 'crazies'.
I really enjoyed this book. It was action-packed had a 'walking dead' feel but with an extra added monster - as if zombies aren't horrifying enough! I would definitely recommend this book
Great storyline, very interesting twist on the. "End of days apocalypse". Enjoyable reading, the characters are well defined, with a plot which keeps you turning pages.
