He studied Illustration and Communication Design at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences . In 2014 he published his first book, Lindbergh - The adventurous story of a flying mouse, the product of his graduation thesis at the college.

At this point in my parenting journey I am fairly convinced that in the eyes of a child, a mouse is a reasonable and acceptable substitute for a person in a good story...and this is a great story! This is a gorgeously illustrated tale of an inquisitive and persistent mouse, who stays focused on his dream of going to the moon and uses methodical planning to build various space crafts to get himself there. Despite failure, he will not be deterred. The story is inspiring. The illustrations are spectacular.
There is a short history of space travel after the story that was excellent, and even the end pages were illustrated. The detail and beauty of the illustrations in this book cannot be overstated. This would make a wonderful gift. Breathtaking talent. 5 stars
*In our library this is shelved as a picture book for older readers. Though fantastic, it is very long and geared toward older readers (upper elementary) with a lengthy attention span.

Se on melkoisen varma siitä, että taivaalla möllöttävä kuu on valtava kivinen pallo - mutta yritäpä vakuuttaa muut hiiret siitä, näillä kun on varma näkemys taivaankappaleen juustoisuudesta.

I knew there was a conspiracy about the moon landing. I just knew it!
The story begins with a little mouse fascinated by views of the night sky, and the moon in particular, from his telescope. He studiously made notes of his observations.
He excitedly informs the other mice, “The moon is a giant ball of stone!” and that, “The light from the sun is what makes the moon shine…”
The other mice are not impressed, however. They are convinced the moon is made of cheese. Of course they believe this myth, they’re mice, and mice love cheese. They didn’t want to hear anything contrary to the wonderful idea of a whole moon of cheese.
I don’t want to spoil the story, so I won’t go through more of the plot, but our little hero mouse does make it to the moon eventually. After some trials, and a bit of a nail-biter about some humans that are close to discovering him.
Along the way he makes a visit to the Smithsonian, where he finds there is a mouse-sized room. “It looked just like the human museum above. But these were mouse-flying machines.”
Mouse-flying machines? Who knew? I certainly had no idea!
We also learn that this little mouse and his trip to the moon might have had an impact on humans getting to the moon. But of course that would be a closely held secret.
The art in this book is absolutely gorgeous. The story is one that would either need to be read by an adult, or for independent readers a bit past typical picture book level.
A few years ago I reread The Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet with a tutoring student of mine. I realized then it’s unfortunately a bit dated. Written before the first moon landing, at a time people were still dreaming about it, I had to explain to my student a bit of what that was like.
“Armstrong” is a good bridge between young people today growing up after the missions to the moon, and the excitement of the first moon landing.
At the end there is information regarding several pioneers in science that influenced and contributed to space flight.
This book is absolutely perfect – wonderful artwork, an interesting, engaging and adventurous story, and factual information at the back regarding the human endeavor to reach the moon.

Armstrong is a little mouse who wanted to show the rest of the mice that the moon wasn't a ball of cheese. He works untiringly to understand the concepts involved in space travel, and after that in creating a safe rocket ship. Despite the obstacles Armstrong never gives up, until his dream comes true.
This is a picture book for older kids who are independent readers. It can also work for reading aloud to some younger kids interested in the topic since the text is not extremely challenging, but in this case I see its length as an issue. In any case the quality of the book is worth a try. The illustrations are incredibly beautiful. The story is full of them, detailed and expressive. I also includes many rocket sketches that I really loved. I read Moletown by Kuhlmann some time ago, and I am still impressed by his talent as an illustrator. At the end of the book "A Short History of Space Travel" is included. A book to own. 5 stars.

Armstrong: The Adventurous Journey of a Mouse to the Moon by Torben Kuhlmann is such a magnificent book for kids! The illustrations are stunning! The story is captivating and clever. The end of the book has space history to follow up the the story. The whole book is just exquisitely done. Mouse that is inventor/adventurer, designs own spaceship and goes to space while hiding from man. Man finds plans and develops own space ship. LOL. Kids will love this story and the exquisite art. Adults will love it too. Go Armstrong! Thanks NetGalley for the chance to read this book.

Awww, die Geschichte war genauso wunderbar erzählt wie die Geschichte um die Maus, die sich ein Flugzeug baute. Es ist eine wundervolle Art, jüngeren solch Erfindungen näher zu bringen. Die wunderschönen Illustrationen runden die Geschichte ab und machen sie zu etwas ganz besonderem!

This one was just as delightful as Lindbergh, which is cleverly alluded to in words and pictures in this story. Kuhlmann uses a mouse to teach young readers about the problems that arose and needed to be solved in the quest for spaceflight to the moon. Little did we know that it was really a mouse who landed on the moon before Neil Armstrong did! His motive—to prove to his fellow mice that the moon is not made of cheese! The illustrations here are beautiful and richly detailed, and those mice are so darned cute. Kuhlmann includes a timeline of the real history of spaceflight to the moon at the end of the book (lest readers think the mouse really did get there first!). Now I’ve got to read Kuhlmann’s third book, Moletown. Highly recommended.

This is the second book about the pioneer mice and their inventions slightly ahead of us humans.
Here, we are in 1955, about 43 years after the events of the first book. A little mouse loves watching the moon and stars through the telescope and decides it wants to go to the moon just like the humans are planning. Thus begins its quest to build a rocket as well as an appropriate space suit.
It is aided in its quest by an old and wise mouse professor but as with the flying machines of the first mouse, there is a lot of trial and error before the little mouse can finally travel to the Moon and back.
As in the first book, so here the author also provides information on real-life pioneers of rocket science, space travel and NASA itself in a child-appropriate form that is nevertheless very interesting and well done.
Once again, what is most striking about the book is the author's talent for illustrating the story with gorgeous images of dusty attics and a little mouse going to work until it can fulfill its dream.
This is just too cute for words, really. The colours are kept in simple and not too flashy tones, giving the right kind of atmosphere for the times this story takes place in, and the details one finds when looking at a page for a while are seriously fantastic.
Absolute recommendation - not just for young(er) readers.

Full of the most astonishingly detailed and break taking illustrations that I have seen in years. Our entire family was enthralled....even my Dad sat down and paged through this, looking at the illustrations. The attention to detail is astounding, I can almost taste, smell and touch these pictures. I desperately want to be friends with this little mouse!
On top of that, the story is charming and this is an entertaining way to learn about the early Space Race. This would make a wonderful gift for a child. I wish I had read this when I was still in school...it would have been a fabulous way to learn about history.
I cannot wait to get my hands on Torben Kuhlmann's other books...this book is lovely and I plan on adding it to my bookshelves very soon. It is the kind of book that should be shared and passed down. It is a treasure.

A: The illustrations in this book are STUNNING. They are incredibly detailed and realistic and make you forget that this story about a mouse dreaming of going to the moon is not real. I want it to be real.
B: The text perfectly connects the illustrations and although there is a good amount, it is still sparse enough that it could be read to 2nd-3rd graders, given that they had some knowledge of the first moon landing.
C: The ending is a perfect blend of actual history and fantasy and weirdly made me emotional. I want to read this with kids and watch them delight in all of it.

Ein wunderschönes Buch für alle, die illustrierte Bücher zu schätzen wissen. Die Geschichte ist spannend erzählt und enthält viele kreative Ideen. Nicht nur ein Buch, wo die Kleinen ihre Freude haben werden :)

Ο μικρός ποντικός μοιράζεται τις ανακαλύψεις του για το φεγγάρι με τα άλλα ποντικάκια, χωρίς να βρει συμπαράσταση στις ανησυχίες του. Τα άλλα ποντικάκια πιστεύουν ακράδαντα ότι το φεγγάρι είναι φτιαγμένο από παρμεζάνα, ίσως γκούντα ή καμαμπέρ, οπότε καθόλου δεν συγκινούνται από τον ήρωά μας. Ο ποντικός μας απογοητεύεται, μέχρι που μια μέρα δέχεται μια μυστηριώδη πρόσκληση για το Ινστιτούτο Σμιθσόνιαν στην Ουάσινγκτον. Εκείνος μένει στη Νέα Υόρκη, αλλά καθόλου δεν πτοείται, καθώς βρίσκει τρόπο να φτάσει εκεί, και να απολαύσει τα επιτεύγματα των ποντικών σε ένα παράλληλο μικροσκοπικό μουσείο. Ένας γέροντας-ποντικός θα τον καθοδηγήσει και θα του συστήσει να διαβάσει τα βιβλία των ανθρώπων. Ο ποντικάκος θα ακούσει τις συμβουλές του, θα ανατρέξει στα επιστημονικά βιβλία, θα παρακολουθήσει διαλέξεις και θα αρχίσει σιγά σιγά με επιμονή να κατασκευάζει τη στολή και το όχημά του, μια τουρμπίνα, για το ταξίδι στο φεγγάρι.
Είναι όλα εύκολα; Καθόλου! Ο ποντικός κάνει λάθη, κάνει πειράματα, δοκιμές, αποτυγχάνει, ριψοκινδυνεύει, μέχρι που μια φωτιά καταστρέφει τα πάντα. Παράλληλα, ελλοχεύει και ένας άλλος κίνδυνος· οι άνθρωποι. Έχουν μάθει για τον πρωτοπόρο ποντικό και προσπαθούν να το πιάσουν και να ανακόψουν την πορεία του. Τα καταφέρνουν; Φυσικά όχι! Ο ποντικός θα φτιάξει το διαστημόπλοιό του, θα ταξιδέψει στο φεγγάρι, θα κάνει ανάλαφρα βήματα πάνω στην επιφάνειά του, θα αφήσει ένα μικρό σημαιάκι και θα επιστρέψει στη Γη, όπου οι υπόλοιποι ποντικοί θα τον υποδεχτούν σαν ήρωα.

Καταπληκτικές οι εικόνες με τον Άρμστρονγκ να ντύνει ένα ομοίωμα ποντικού με τη στολή αστροναύτη, βαστώντας βελόνα και κλωστή ή εκεί όπου δοκιμάζει τη στολή μαζί με το γυάλινο σκάφανδρο βουτώντας σε μια γυάλα, την ώρα που ένα χρυσόψαρο τον κοιτάζει με γουρλωμένα μάτια. Τι να πούμε για την εικόνα, όπου αιωρείται πάνω από τους πολυσύχναστους δρόμους της Νέας Υόρκης με τους ουρανοξύστες να τον περικυκλώνουν μετά από μια αποτυχημένη δοκιμαστική πτήση… Όλα υπέροχα, όλα εκπληκτικά!

Ο ποντικός μας απογοητεύεται, μέχρι που μια μέρα δέχεται μια μυστηριώδη πρόσκληση για το Ινστιτούτο Σμιθσόνιαν στην Ουάσινγκτον. Εκείνος μένει στη Νέα Υόρκη, αλλά καθόλου δεν πτοείται, καθώς βρίσκει τρόπο να φτάσει εκεί, και να απολαύσει τα επιτεύγματα των ποντικών σε ένα παράλληλο μικροσκοπικό μουσείο. Ένας γέροντας-ποντικός θα τον καθοδηγήσει και θα του συστήσει να διαβάσει τα βιβλία των ανθρώπων. Ο ποντικάκος θα ακούσει τις συμβουλές του, θα ανατρέξει στα επιστημονικά βιβλία, θα παρακολουθήσει διαλέξεις και θα αρχίσει σιγά σιγά με επιμονή να κατασκευάζει τη στολή και το όχημά του, μια τουρμπίνα, για το ταξίδι στο φεγγάρι.
Είναι όλα εύκολα; Καθόλου! Ο ποντικός κάνει λάθη, κάνει πειράματα, δοκιμές, αποτυγχάνει, ριψοκινδυνεύει, μέχρι που μια φωτιά καταστρέφει τα πάντα. Παράλληλα, ελλοχεύει και ένας άλλος κίνδυνος· οι άνθρωποι. Έχουν μάθει για τον πρωτοπόρο ποντικό και προσπαθούν να το πιάσουν και να ανακόψουν την πορεία του. Τα καταφέρνουν; Φυσικά όχι! Ο ποντικός θα φτιάξει το διαστημόπλοιό του, θα ταξιδέψει στο φεγγάρι, θα κάνει ανάλαφρα βήματα πάνω στην επιφάνειά του, θα αφήσει ένα μικρό σημαιάκι και θα επιστρέψει στη Γη, όπου οι υπόλοιποι ποντικοί θα τον υποδεχτούν σαν ήρωα.
Κάποια χρόνια αργότερα, ο Νιλ Άρμστρονγκ θα είναι ο πρώτος άνθρωπος που θα φτάσει στο φεγγάρι. Εκεί θα βρει και ένα μικρό σημαιάκι…

Θα χαζέψετε ώρα τις εικόνες, και θα προσπαθήσετε να ρουφήξετε την ομορφιά τους και τις πληροφορίες που κρύβουν (εάν το επιθυμήσετε).

Καταπληκτικές οι εικόνες με τον Άρμστρονγκ να ντύνει ένα ομοίωμα ποντικού με τη στολή αστροναύτη, βαστώντας βελόνα και κλωστή ή εκεί όπου δοκιμάζει τη στολή μαζί με το γυάλινο σκάφανδρο βουτώντας σε μια γυάλα, την ώρα που ένα χρυσόψαρο τον κοιτάζει με γουρλωμένα μάτια. Τι να πούμε για την εικόνα, όπου αιωρείται πάνω από τους πολυσύχναστους δρόμους της Νέας Υόρκης με τους ουρανοξύστες να τον περικυκλώνουν μετά από μια αποτυχημένη δοκιμαστική πτήση… Όλα υπέροχα, όλα εκπληκτικά!
Στο τέλος θα βρείτε μια σύντομη ιστορία της αστροναυτικής και πληροφορίες για τον δημιουργό, ενώ στην αρχή τον πρόλογο από τη Valerie Neal, την πρόεδρο και έφορο του Τμήματος Ιστορίας του Διαστήματος, του Εθνικού Μουσείου Αεροναυπηγικής και Διαστήματος Ινστιτούτου Σμιθσόνιαν.

Wunderschön gezeichnet und zauberhaft erzählt. Ein Buch zum Verlieben. Ich habe von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite während des Lesens gelächelt.

Lo straordinario Torben Kuhlmann torna con un meraviglioso nuovo libro illustrato, Armstrong
The Adventurous Journey of a Mouse to the Moon.
In questa storia tornano due protagonisti già presenti nel primo libro dell’autore/illustratore, Lindbergh: The Tale of a Flying Mouse, ovvero i topi e l’ingegneria spaziale.
Questa volta, il piccolo roditore protagonista è determinato ad ogni costo a realizzare il suo sogno: visitare la Luna.
Nessuno ha mai fatto una cosa simile prima, ma lui è determinato a tentare: prima studia come poter costruire l’astronave e la tuta spaziale, poi fa delle rocambolesche prove…
Fino a coronare il suo sogno: il nostro piccolo topolino riesce a raggiungere la Luna e a piantarvi fiero la propria bandiera, pioniere assoluto di una simile avventura.
L storia si chiude in modo alquanto simpatico e a chiudere il libro c’è una breve storia dell’astronomia.
Le tavole di Kuhlmann sono magiche, il suo gusto per dettagli, colori, particolari unico, un realismo che si fonde con l’aura fiabesca che caratterizza ogni scena.
Le tavole sono organizzate sia come storia e album di ricordi, in modo che il lettore possa seguire passo dopo passo i progressi e le avventure del protagonista, emozionarsi con lui.
Armstrong non è un libro illustrato convenzionale, è una sorta di album, di racconto visivo, adatto a lettori grandi e piccini, ricordando come la forza di volontà e dei sogni a volte possa far raggiungere risultati insperati (… almeno nelle fiabe).
Imperdibile.

"Pieni käpälä kierteli valtavan teleskoopin ruuveja. Pikkuruinen harmaa karvapallero tähyili rautaputkeen, joka oli täynnä lasisia linssejä. Tähtitaivas alkoi näyttäytyä terävänä kuvana.
- Uskomatonta, pikku hiirulainen mutisi itsekseen."
Torben Kuhlmannin Armstrong kertoo tarinan newyorkilaisesta hiirestä, joka saa selville, että kuu ei olekaan juustoa vaan valtava kivinen pallo. Se joutuu kuitenkin pettymään pahemman kerran, kun lajitoverit eivät millään ota uskoakseen sen selityksiä.
"Kuu on pyöreä ja siinä on reikiä. Joskus se on keltainen kuin goudajuusto, toisinaan taas valkoinen kuin camembert tai jopa oranssinpunainen kuin cheddar." Miten siis kuu voisi olla mitään muuta kuin iso juusto?!
Hiiri haluaa välttämättä todistaa muille olevansa oikeassa. Yllättäen se saa kirjeen Smithsonianin vanhalta museohiireltä, ja alkaa huima seikkailu, jonka päämääränä on Kuu.
Kirjan lopussa on myös kiva tietopaketti avaruuslentojen historiasta, aina Galileo Galileista Apollo-ohjelmaan.
Mutta isoin syy, miksi tähän opukseen kannattaa tarttua, on ehdottomasti kuvitus. Siis vau, huh, OMG ja mitä näitä nyt on! Armstrongissa on heittämällä hienoin kuvitus, jonka olen yhdessäkään lastenkirjassa ikinä nähnyt - tai kirjassa ylipäätään. Aivan käsittämättömän upea!
Kuhlmannin teksti ei harmillisesti aivan yllä kuvitustaiteen tasolle, muuten kirja olisi ollut ihan 6/5. Lämmin lukusuositus joka tapauksessa!

A scientifically-inclined mouse attempts to convince his fellows that the moon is made of stone, but the murine masses prefer to believe the old wives' tale about it being made of cheese. Then our little hero gets an invitation to Washington, DC, where he meets a fellow mouse-scientists at the Smithsonian who encourages his efforts. Much like those earlier books, the story in Armstrong: The Adventurous Journey of a Mouse to the Moon is engaging and fun, while the artwork is simply lovely. There is a luminous quality to Kuhlmann's artwork that is absolutely beautiful, and his animal figures are charming. I also liked the 50s people and settings seen in the background here. Recommended to young readers who enjoy animal fiction and tales of astronauts, as well as to fans of the artist.

Auf der vergangenen Frankfurter Buchmesse bin ich auf einen riesengroßen Aufsteller gestoßen, der eine Maus im Astronautenanzug zeigte. Da kam ich nicht drum herum und musste dieses Buch lesen!
Schauplatz dieses Buchs ist Amerika in den 1950er Jahren. Armstrong, eine kleine Maus, zweifelt als Einziger des Mäusevolks daran, dass der Mond aus Käse ist. Jede Nacht schaut er durch sein Fernrohr in den Himmel, ist fasziniert von diesem Anblick und beschließt der Sache auf den Grund zu gehen. Armstrong möchte die erste Maus auf dem Mond sein.
Der Zeichner Torben Kuhlmann präsentiert uns mit „Armstrong“ ein Bilderbuch, das seinesgleichen sucht (ok, seine anderen Werke schließen wir mal kurz aus). Ich bin sowas von hin und weg wie schön diese Zeichnung und die gesamte Aufmachung sind. Im Großformat mit 128-Seiten liegt „Armstrong“ absolut hochwertig in der Hand und zieht alle Blicke auf sich. Ich hatte es auf dem Wohnzimmertisch liegen und kaum einer ist daran unbemerkt vorbei gekommen. Zudem kann man dieses Buch auch nicht „mal kurz“ lesen, denn dafür ist es viel zu facettenreich. Ich habe es wirklich oft in die Hand genommen, wieder und wieder betrachtet und ich bin mir sicher, dass ich es auch in nächster Zeit noch öfter aus dem Regal holen werde.
Wer nun denkt: „Bilderbücher sind doch was für Kinder“, der sollte jetzt mal sehen wie energisch ich mit dem Kopf schüttle. Schon allein die vielen Konstruktionszeichnungen, die technischen Skizzen und Konzepte sind so faszinierend anzusehen - das finden nicht nur Kinderaugen klasse. Dazu kommt, dass wir natürlich alles aus der Perspektive der Maus betrachten und somit für uns die kleinen Dinge plötzlich ganz groß, imposant und detailgetreu erscheinen.
Die Geschichte selbst ist voller Spannung, Raffinesse, Technikaffinität und das alles setzt die mutige Maus super in Szene. Wir verfolgen als Leser wie Armstrong wissbegierig und entschlossen sich seine Ziele setzt und daran unaufhörlich arbeitet. Es geht aber auch darum, dass man an sich selbst glauben muss und auch mal etwas anpacken, das zuvor noch keiner getan hat. Armstrong ist schon nach der ersten Seite direkt in mein Herz gehüpft.
Der Schreibstil eignet sich sowohl zum Vorlesen als auch zum selbst lesen. Die historischen Fakten der Raumfahrtgeschichte sind gut in die Geschichte eingewoben, sodass es wirklich sehr interessant ist. Flüssig, gewitzt und spannend schreibt Torben Kuhlmann über Armstrong und lässt uns am Abenteuer der kleinen Maus teilhaben.
Fazit
Quadratisch, hochwertig, detailreich, gelungen! Armstrong zeigt, dass nichts unmöglich ist, wenn man mit Mut und Vertrauen an eine Sache heran geht. Ich bin begeistert und behalte Torben Kuhlmanns Werke auf jeden Fall im Auge. Bitte, bitte, wir brauchen noch viel mehr solcher Bücher!

Aivan kuten Kuhlmannin edellisessäkin teoksessa Edison, oli tässäkin mielettömän upea kuvitus, joka henkii vahvasti 1950-lukua. Tällä kertaa ei mennä meren pohjaan vaan kuuhun. Ensimmäinen tuolle kiertolaiselle laskeutunut ei ehkä ollutkaan ihminen vaan hiiri! (No, ainakin teoksen maailmassa.) Hän sai myöhemmin nimen Armstrong, jotta salaisuus ei paljastuisi laajalle yleisölle. Hiiret luulivat kuun olevan juustoa, mutta yksi hiiri tutki taivasta kaukoputkellaan ja sai tietää totuuden.

Se Torben non ci aveva travolti con il suo primo successo, leggendo Armstrong sarà impossibile non divenire suoi fan. La sua capacità di romanzare un racconto dai cenni storici decisamente intensi è insuperabile. C’è tanto lavoro dietro questo albo, così come c’è tanto lavoro nel compiere un’impresa sensazionale e il messaggio arriva forte ai piccoli lettori. Haar juf heeft Armstrong in het teken van de kosmische les voorgelezen in de klas. En wat voor een kosmische les! Die kleine van mij weet nog beter hoe de aarde en de maan ontstaan zijn. Dat we als het ware vastzitten aan de maan. En dat niet de mens het eerst op de maan was, maar een muis. Ik wist dat niet en ik wist ook niet dat Torben Kuhlmann prachtige illustraties maakt. Onze verwondering werd vaak hardop uitgesproken met een 'Oooh' of een 'Aaah'. We hadden het in twee dagen uit. En helemaal jammer is dat niet, want het nodigt uit om keer op keer te kijken en te lezen. Heerlijk boek.
