I wanted to like She Believes more than I actually did. I'm part of the street team for it, and as such received a free ARC in exchange for my honest review; the corresponding Facebook group is full of stories of how this book has impacted women's (and men's!) lives, which is so awesome, don't get me wrong. I love that.

But She Believes wasn't quite as life-changing for me. There wasn't any one thing about it that I could point to as being The Be-All, End-All off-putting item - but several little things. Lots of Bible translations were used; I get this in principle, but the execution was distracting for me. NIV! NLT! Amplified! The Message! (Ohhh...The Message. I'm not a fan, but that's a different topic for a different time.)

I also struggled with the statement that "God will not give us more than we can handle". To me that isn't entirely biblical, and its oft-repeated inclusion concerns me. I'd love to be corrected on that if it is biblical.

There are definitely some golden nuggets in this book, and I've highlighted plenty - but some nuggets are fool's gold, looking great but falling short of the true golden standard of the Bible.

Disclaimer: I received a free ARC of the book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

She Believes

Embracing the Life You Were Created to Live
by Lindell, Debbie, Flory, Susy

Revell

Christian

Pub Date 04 Oct 2016

I was given a copy of She Believes through the publisher and their partnership with Netgalley in exchange for my honest review which is as follows:

In She Believes the author reminds us that life is not about finding ourselves but about finding out who God created us to be. We are reminded too that God formed us from the inside out.

The authors of She Believes point out that we all have a story that is uniquely ours. A story that only we can tell. She Believes reminds us too that just like physical light is important to our everyday life, we need the light of Christ for our eternal life.

I give She Believes five out of five stars.

Happy Reading.

Simple. Saccharine. This book is a light and easy read filled with personal stories from the author's life. It feels like A LOT of hand holding for the reader, which in and of itself is not a bad thing if you are in a place in your life where that is needed. If you are feeling insecure, not good enough, or you aren't sure of your place in the world, then this book is for you. You will be encouraged, uplifted, and inspired.

Note: I was given an advanced reading copy taken from uncorrected proofs from the publisher in preparation for the book's release. My review is based on that copy and not the edition to be released on 10/04/16.

It should have been a super red flag that this author used the message paraphrase and yet constantly referred to it as “the Bible says”… that would he like quoting the Jesus storybook bible and claiming it’s cannon - *insert eye roll*. But I gave it a shot anyway - pushing through the authors cheerleader persona and trying to find why this book was so promoted by so many. And honestly I can’t. “Translation” choice aside the theology was watered down milk that she spoon fed while patronizing us with unrelatable stories and her cheering that “if I can do it you can to!” I’m sorry - you watching daytime soaps is not relatable in a battle of sin. For real woman? What planet do you live on?! The fact God called her to Australia for kicks and giggles became an object lesson on trust? Or doing an obstacle course in the trees? Im not saying that we have to have a super hard life in order to preach the Good News to others BUT it’s a lot easier to trust the Lord when your boats never really rocked. So it was really condescending to others that she offered these as relatable helps. The most relatable sections were those after her cancer diagnosis which came AFTER she began writing the book. But even there it couldn’t be redeemed for her poor theology. To much prosperity / American Gospel message. My friends. Life is hard. Just read Ecclesiastes to see that even with all the money (remember silver was pointless in Solomons kingdom there was so much gold) and riches life was entirely pointless without God. We have Christ. And our object in the present is not some amazing life for us (live your dream! Discover your purpose!) but to bring Glory to God in all we do. The object of our affection can only be Christ my sisters.

This is very empowering and positive. I would definitely recommend this book. There are researched studies and facts as well as faith-filled stories. Women too frequently doubt their value and worth and Debbie worked hard to put into words that no matter what our earthly lives have told us, we are valuable to God! My only complaint was, I listened to the audiobook of this and it sounded like I was being screamed or yelled at. I have the physical book and plan to read through that as well.

Beautifully written! ❤️ if you ever felt unloved by others or forget to love yourself, read this book and find back the strength and claim the promise.

What do you really believe about yourself, about your life, and about your Creator? What do you believe about why you were chosen to be alive at this moment in history?

How God designed each of us exactly how he wants us to be; all we need to do is believe that, unwrap the package of our lives, and watch God use us in ways we’ve never dreamed or imagined.

Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about understanding who you were created to be. Every human being who has ever lived and every baby who will ever be born was and is intentionally and purposefully and beautifully made by God to display his glory. And that includes you!

No matter how it happened – whether it was a good situation or not so good, or what the circumstances were – you were not a MISTAKE! God wanted you to be born. He planned for you to exist, and he was over-the-moon excited about your birth. You were not an accident or just a coincidence of two people having sex. You were planned for and wanted, created on purpose by the God of the universe.

One of Satan’s most destructive and effective tools is to cause girls to doubt their worth and value. Satan wants each one of us to feel insufficient, and he will do whatever he can to keep us from understanding and believing that we are in every way uniquely, perfectly, and beautifully designed by God.

The lie of “not good enough” is one that has no boundaries. It’s a lie that labors endlessly to weave its way into your heart and mind through the words you hear, the message you see, and even your inner human nature, constantly inviting you to compare yourself to others. This lie works tirelessly to destroy the truth of God’s Word and the magnificent creation he fashioned you to be.

Debbie’s style of writing is light-hearted and entertaining. She shares many interesting personal stories of travels, triumphs, and tragedies. She unashamedly calls women “girls”, her personal nickname for all of us aged 18 and over! Overall the book is charming and endearing. It will definitely encourage women who have neglected themselves to reclaim their total worth.

The book is divided into 5 sections. My main criticism is that the book is on the long side and the print is a little small. It’s not a “quick read” for a weekend trip. I find it hard to see how a busy mother or someone with an hour a day to read would really have the time to get through it in less than a couple of months.

The good news is you can “pick a chapter” that pertains to something of relevance in your life. For example, if you are interested in networking, try “Section 4: Believing Makes Being Together Even Better, Chapter 14. Making Your Connections”.

Overall, I enjoyed the faith-filled stories. The apparent objective is to energize women of faith, big or small, about how and who God made them. She doesn’t try to offer a blueprint for being more like “a pastor’s wife” or some other stereotype. She wants women to celebrate their individuality.

The Women’s Reading Group at my church is currently reading this book (I finished a bit early).

I recommend this book for women aged 25 and above since many of the lessons are drawn from her adult life (she married at 19).

In her book, She Believes, author Debbie Lindell seeks to help each reader to embrace the life for which we were created by God to live. She writes in an easy to read and conversational style so that we feel like every word was written personally for us.

Each chapter is rich with Scriptures and a closing prayer to help deeply embed God’s truth in our hearts and minds, therefore, enabling us to embrace our identity in Christ.

This is a wonderful book especially for young women and/or new believers. Each chapter shares truths which are sure to encourage women to journey life with Christ as they embrace the truth that “He is calling us to a new level of faith – to believe what we believe and live it out loud for all the world to see.”

Lindell's tone in this book is hit or miss for me. Sometimes, I find her constant cheerleading annoying and fake, but other times, it totally works with the message she is trying to get across. This book is definitely geared towards a younger, female crowd and I know she is trying to teach good Christian values, but sometimes she sounds too preachy and judgemental for those of us who are not very religious.

Overall, this book wasn't the right one for me, but I know she has good intentions for the girls that read this so if the right person picks it up, it could be very rewarding.

"Following Jesus closely is the key to your spirit coming alive to all that is good and right and true."

That quote should say it all. Such a wonderful book giving you simple everyday examples of how to be closer to God.

Love all of the amazing examples Debbie uses from her own life and lives of other "girls". She shares so many things that there is something that anyone who reads it will be able to relate to.

Love this and makes me want to find a way to walk closer and talk more meaningfully to God.

I love this book!! Although I have only read half of the book, I would recommend it to any girl mid-teens to mid-twenties. I would recommend it because it reminds you of your worth and that you are a daughter of Christ. It also addresses the struggles and triumphs of being a woman in today’s society. One of my favorite things about this book is that you get a glimpse into the authors life and you can relate her struggles and successes to your own because you have something in common- God. This book is any easy read and is hard to put down!

The main focus of the book is believing. It is divided into five sections on believing. We were designed on purpose, believing changes our heart, it affects the mind and spirit, it makes together even better, and believing is for your future. The style that the book is written in makes the reader feel that the author is talking directly to you. I did quite a bit of underling as passages would impact me.

This book was empowering as a teenage girl to live the lifestyle Christ has called us to live. We don’t have to live in shame or fear, but instead can embrace exactly who He has called us to be.

Took me two months to finish this book due to my hectic schedule😭 A really good read for those (especially women) who feel lose with her purpose in life and want to start a commitment to re-connect with God. I love how she engaged me in her life journey and I am blessed beyond words to learn how her faith in God has changed her perspective and mindset on how we should view our circumstances.

Everything is beautiful. I cried through the flipped pages as I immersed myself in this book.❤️ I am praying this book would touched many girls out there!

I found myself taking time to finish this book. Reading a chapter here and there. But what was amazing was that each chapter was right at the exact moment when I needed it! Like the chapter on Peace and Quiet when I had a busy, loud day with the kids. Or the chapter on Darkness when I was settling down to read when the electricity went out. Very motivating and heartfelt. I truly could feel the love poured into each page!

I first pulled this book of the shelf at the library thinking, "this might be good." I was two pages in and decided "add to cart" was a much better option. I really loved this devotional style book. I think that Debbie did an amazing job writing this one. I loved watching her story unfold with the book. It is nice to see God working in a person that is teaching. So instead of "you must do this!" It was "God showed me this and I want to share it with you."

I was really happy about this one. If you are looking for a devotional this is the way to go!

This was an amazing book. It is easy to read and helps build a better understanding of God and faith. Highly recommend. I read it slow because it was part of a bible study I am in.
