Dibs

Rate this book
Dibs—a game that spanned over two decades between three friends. My best friends, Juls, Kat and me. It’s easy. One girl calls dibs on a guy making him off limits to the others. It’s a game of ‘what if’ and who saw the hot guy first. Honestly, the ‘dibs’ guy never panned out…yet. But it was tradition and you never screw with tradition…

I’m Dr. Samantha Williams—queen of banter, following rules and divorced from the biggest ass in ex-husband history. Fighting hard to swallow my OCD ways and get lost on a luxury cruise liner for 12 days—all for the sake of friendship. Yep, drinks and dibs!

A wedding party going on a cruise together? Come on! Get real. 12 days of torture! I’m Mac McAllister – I don’t discuss my past. I’ve never done relationships. Rules? What rules… Yet, the moment that woman walked away from me after putting me in my place, all I could think was—challenge accepted. Who did she think she was? I’ll tell you…she was a woman that slayed me with her smile and murdered me with her wit… She may not need me, but after all these years, I finally needed someone. It was her.

Mac McAllister is about to learn the rules of Dibs.

The game of Dibs is about to change.

This is another 'it's not you, it's me' case. The writing is okay and there are a lot of LOL moments but this book isn't for me because:

A) I couldn't connect with the characters, especially the heroine's friends who play a huge part in this book. I'm not in the mood for the 15-year-old behavior of adult women at the moment.

B) I'm not a big fan of older-heroine-younger-hero books.

Sorry, too many books on my tbr shelf.

4.5 This was fun!

It really was an unexpected read, I wanted something fast and easy, and I got something so much better!
I absolutely loved the MC, I laughed so hard! She is great!

Loved the two together, loved the story, loved their chemistry! I loved everything (and that happens so damn rare!). I was even surprised at some stuff, I did not expect that plot twist!
It is a book worth trying!

Ok y'all, here you go......4.5 stars. Nothing better in my opinion than a witty, smartass heroine. And the "Thor" like Hero is another plus. This one is sassy, sexy hot and a good time. Sure there's some drama and a curve ball thrown in near the end. But crazy as it seems the HEA turns out just fine. Suspend a little disbelief and just enjoy. This is a new author for me and I'll definitely be checking out her other bks.

Beware of Spoilers!

Star Ratings:
Heroine (Samantha): 4/5
Hero (Mac): Manwhore – 3.5/5
Plot: 4/5
Grovel: none
Cheating: none that we hear about
HEA: yes
Triggers: H owns a business where he gets paid for sex

Average score: 4/5

Best Line: h’s thoughts: “I freaking loved Eminem. I could rap any one of his songs better than he could.”

Worst Lines: H to h: “Since we are going to get to know each other so I can get between your legs sooner,”

H’s thoughts “My cock had been in hundreds of women,”

Personal Review:
I never thought I would give a romance such as high rating when it is about a male prostitute who doesn't tell the h he is one and they fall in love!

I think it’s because I loved the banter and wit and I got distracted but I immensely enjoyed the ride and I don’t regret reading this one bit.

Samantha, Becca, Juls and Kat are very close friends. Becca has cancer and is dying. Samantha is a divorced woman at the age of 40 with a son who is 15 years old. Her husband was cheating on her all the time. Sam is a busy woman who doesn't have much time to enjoy herself. She is a gynecologist. Recently, Becca found some dates for her, all of which ended in great disappointment :)

Now, Becca convinced everyone that she was doing fine and Samantha agrees to go on a 12-day cruise trip with their other two friends, Juls and Kat.

These close friends have a special game: Dibs! When one of them sees a man she is attracted to, she stakes a claim by calling "dibs", which means he is unattainable to the others and they shouldn't flirt with him.

Samantha is a lovely character. She is very intelligent with an amazing sense of humor. She is beautiful with red hair and green eyes, she is sexy, sassy, smart, witty and funny.

There, enters Mac, aka Thor, as Samantha calls him. He is a very attractive, hot alpha male with gorgeous blue eyes and a very well-built body. Plus, he is sharp and he has a good sense of humor. He is on the Love Boat, too :)

Samantha calls "dibs" on Mac as soon as she sees him. Juls is attracted to Mac's friend Blake. Unfortunately, Kat is married and even if she wants to join the club, she can't :)

Samantha finds Mac way too hot and attractive but because of his younger age, self-confidence and arrogance, she hesitates for a while and refuses him. There begins a hilarious banter between them. Those moments are really "laugh-out-loud" moments. Mac, already captivated by Sam's beauty, finds the woman also very smart and challenging and he thinks their banter would be a nice foreplay!

Soon, they fall into each other's spell and there are both emotional, funny and hot moments for a while. They begin to develop strong feelings towards each other quickly but all the time there is this feeling of uneasiness due to some unspoken things between them. Mac acts mysteriously, not revealing much...

Will this be an affair of 12 days as long as the trip goes on or will it continue afterwards?

Despite his strong feelings for her, Mac gives hints that there can be nothing further between them. He wants Sam to focus on this magical time on the cruise ship. She has a hard time to understand, and so do the readers because it is so clear that he is in love with her as much as she is in love with him. Why is he so determined that it should end at the end of the trip?

In the last quarter of the book, we learn what the problem was. It was his job!

Well, I didn't know about it, so it came as a shock to me. It was hard to process!

It is not written in the blurb, so I had no idea. Now, I have read some reviews after finishing the book and some people have mentioned about his job without warning that it is a spoiler. It actually is a spoiler, you aren't supposed to know it until the right moment.

I think everyone should start the book by not knowing it, that is why his job is not mentioned in the blurb. But, if by accident, you learn about it and feel disturbed by it, do not discard this book just for that fact. Read it, learn the reason behind it, the how and why of it? OK, it was really hard for me to process. But then, I said, well who am I to judge, never been in his shoes!

The first half of the book is great fun. It is full of good banter, really funny jokes etc. Then there is some drama, angst and mystery... and finally a resolution.

The best thing about this book is that it does not give you a moment to get bored. It keeps your attention all the time. You are literally hooked. One chapter is told by Sam, another is told by Mac. And it goes on like that. So, you learn how both of them feel and think.

I loved this book. It really entertained me. After a few so-called humorous books that turned out to be a disaster, this book came as a good treat to me.

Whenever you need a light read to entertain yourselves, I highly recommend this book.

Here are my favorite quotations from the book:

“Should wear a condom on your head because if you’re gonna act like a dick you might as well dress like one.”

***

“I’m trying to understand things from your point of view, but it’s hard for me to get my head that far up my ass.”

Have fun :)

This is the first book by Kristi that I read and it was fantastic and can't wait to pick up more books by her!

Dibs is a game where you call "dibs" on a man that is so hot he is unattainable and your friends can't hit on him.

Sam is a divorced OB with a 15 year old son who never takes time for herself, because she is always trying to take care of everyone else. Her best friend, Becca, who is dying of cancer convinces her that it is okay and that she needs to go on a 12 day cruise with her other best friends, Kat and Juls.

Mac, another guest on the cruise, knows exactly how to please a woman and make her give up control. He can't get enough of the sexy, witty, funny and sarcastic Sam. She makes him want things that he's never had before or wanted before.

Will this dibs relationship turn into more or will things end with the cruise?

I started this book out laughing. Every girls bad nightmare getting out of a long relationship and every guy your friends try to hook you up with are d-bags. Samantha got out of a long relationship and her friends (Becca, Kat & Jul's) decided that going on a cruise would take her mind off things and hope she would just have fun with some guys. Right from the beginning you get Samantha's smart mouth when she is approached by a guy on the ship (who she chooses to call Thor cause of his looks as didn't catch his name.) This is when Samantha Calls dibs on him meaning his friends cant go after him always a long time joke with the girls. His real name is Mac, he is tall, Handsome and willing to give it right back to her. That is when his mission was set in place. Mac is the playboy type of guy having women throw themselves at him, she wasn't willing to surrender which made his mission to be with here. Will Sam let her guard down and let another man in to her life even just on a short trip where she never has to see him again? I smiled and couldn't get enough of this book. You will be laughing for sure, have moments of heartache and tears but most of all you will smile and just love this book. At least I did.

This book is one that, while it had funny moments, I just didn't enjoy enough to want to keep going. And it's unfortunate that it didn't work for me because the parts that I liked, were really good.

I do think that this is one that would work for someone else though. And I would be willing to read something else by the author.

First off, If you haven't read a Kristi Pelton series, or book. I suggest you do it. She's a damn good writer, and all her stories are wonderful.

DIBS- A game best friends play. You call "DIBS" on a guy, and your friends can't touch him. They may search for one in close proximity, but they can't touch your DIB. When witty come backs get mixed in with DIBS, it's a laugh a minute.

From the first word to the last I was hooked. I laughed non stop at the banter, and comebacks in the first three chapters, I was almost crying from laughing. As you get to know Samantha, you know that her and her 3 best friends are glued at the hip.
Becca, is sick, and has cancer, but since Sam's divorce from her wound too damn tight cheating ex-husband, Becca sets Sam up on 4 very hilarious dates. Believe me, you will laugh so hard you will cry.

Julia aka Juls, and Kat get Sam to go on a 2 week cruise. Sam needs this cruise like we all need air to breathe. Bryan her ex is just a threatening pain in the ass, and her son Jake is her life. With the push of Becca, Sam, Kat and Juls, head out on the high seas.

With OCD, and anxiety raring their ugly faces, it takes a special guy to calm her. When she claims DIBS on Mac, her the high seas will never be the same. With so many laughs, you can't help but get sucked into the book more. By the time it hits you, you have been laughing, and now, BAM you might shed a few tears, but then you are back to laughing again.

As Mac tries with everything his has to get Sam to submit to him, it takes his best friend Blake to hook up with Juls, and their friend Cody to cozy up to Kat. Mac finally gets Sam to let her guard down, and when she does, grab the lube, the vibrators, and a couple ice cubes, because there is a whole lot of rocking going on aboard that cruise ship.

I won't go into anymore details, because, you really need to read the book.
Will Sam get past Mac's profession, and open up her heart to the man she has fallen in love with on the high seas? And will Mac change his ways just to be with Sam who is a mother, and a doctor.
Climb aboard the SS SASSY PANTS (I made that up) cruise ship, and set sail with a group of friends that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer each other on. ENJOY!!

Loved it!!

This book will go down as one of my favorites ...it's hot ...funny..interesting ...and entertaining from start to finish ...Sam is an intelligent doctor ...who's had her fair share of awful dates ...and she agrees..
however reluctantly to go on a cruise with a few friends ...inter Mac ...who is one strong ...determined male...who loves a challenge ...Let the drama and funny begin!

~~For the first time in my life, my fear took a back seat to wanting to please him. This fear had ruled my life for years…and yet staring down at his extended hand brought the strangest comfort.~~

When you can laugh out loud during a book...that's always a good thing ...and I certainly did while reading this one...The story is never boring ...hooked me from page one ...all the characters are intriguing and it makes you want to keep reading ...I couldn't read it fast enough ...

~~There was a sexy, fiery redhead I was after, and I had no doubt that I’d find her. Challenge accepted. Game on.~~

And when this one was over ...I didn't want it to be over ...One-Click it Now...Highly Recommended Read!!!

Calling “dibs” is a game these three friends play where one stakes a claim to something or someone that declares “hands off” to the others. Welcome aboard the love boat – Game On!

I found this tale to be a fun-filled read blended with sexy romance and lusty moments of intense attraction. When a girls getaway meets up with a group of guys belonging to a wedding party on the high seas, expect the unexpected in the hookups with enough angst, twists and turns to keep it interesting. And there’s an “elephant in the room” on this cruise that just might sink the ship of budding romance.

A little bummer in the editing put a frown on my face. Throughout this book, the author used the forms of blond/blonde in the opposite way as they were meant to be used, i.e. blonde for male and blond for female. There were many examples and it annoyed me each time.

Otherwise, although not my favorite book by Kristi Pelton, it made me laugh and kept me entertained throughout.

This is my first read by this author and it was enjoyable. Loved the banter between the three friends and then you add a couple of hot guys into the mix. You couldn’t ask for anymore. There are some hesitancy on the heroine’s part due to the age difference but is that enough to cause her to walk away from what could be true love and her HEA. Great read and I will be reading more from this author.

A rather entertaining book.

➦A 40 year old OB/GYN goes on a cruise with her girlfriends and meets the man of her dreams. After spending her vacation with him she wants more, but he doesn't. He has a secret.

➦I would have liked the characters to reveal more about their past/current lives while they were getting to know each other. It felt very physical, which I didn't mind, by the way. I just wanted more depth, I guess.

➦There were times where transitions from scene to scene were rather abrupt. For example, the heroine gets on a plane and has anxiety attack. The next paragraph starts describing the town she arrived at. Um, ok, a little sentence to transition would be nice. I noticed a couple of such instances in the book.

➦I would have given the book 4 starts, but the ending was rushed. It almost felt like the author was a bit exhausted and just wanted to get it over with. But the endings are very very important for us readers! And even though it was a HEA I was not completely satisfied!

Cruise with friends!
It's totally what I want.
When best friends set out to enjoy each friendship on a cruise, Sam and her friends will see some nice eye candy.
Mac being one of the candies!
Mac is Hot ! Mac wants Sam. Sam may or may not want him. Decisions, they can be so difficult.
Sam knows its just a cruise and when the cruise ends so does Mac.
Mac knows some about Sam of course she doesn't know...he knows.
Sam doesn't know everything about Mac... I mean they just met. But when she does find out-
OMG.... I wanted to be Sam....
I wanted to go his place employment.....
This is a fun in the sun trip that I only wish I could be on in real life.
Just as in real life it isn't all fun n games, there is sadness, that will touch your heart and make you want to say Kristi's name out loud...no no no...
True Friendship.
I love this book.
I give it a huge five stars !!!

4.5* I.Loved.This.!!! I loved Sam, Juls and Kat. They were freaking hilarious. I loved the fact that they were so close that they could say anything to each other, no holds barred. Everyone needs friends like that! I could totally relate to them, being in that age group, and having the same insecurities that us 40+ women have. I could absolutely understand Sam's reluctance of why some younger smokin' hot man would be interested. Mac (Thor) was fantastic and was just as sassy as Sam was. There were just a few little bits that confused me but nothing major. Definitely recommend this one! :)

Thor! I would call dibs on him too! Book is funny, wrapped with love, and sprinkled with hot sex. Sam is a woman on mission, to rid herself of loser guys! A girl could wish. In walks Mac, aka Thor. He believes fate has brought them together. I think it's Sam's sexy body, plus she keeps trying to avoid him. It's a big cruise ship right? Mac is like a bloodhound, he keeps finding ways to be with Sam until she finally falls into his spell. Mac becomes her lover and protector. Bit of a twist with Macs profession though. Love conquers all!

The cover got my attention, but sure as hell the story did too! I’ve read this book on my way to my internship, and I’m pretty sure I got some weird faces when I laughed out loud. I hated getting out of the train because I wanted to continue reading.

I’m not into older woman/young man books, but this one sold me!

Such a fun and easy read that makes you hop on that rollercoaster and enjoy the ride.

Do I recommend this book? Hell. Yeah.

This was the first book I read by this author, and I was really happy with the writing style, the flow of the book was excellent. Funny, witty and sexy, but I had a really big issue with the H being a male prostitute. I could have seen maybe a high paid stripper but man whore was too much for me. Other than his profession, the book was fabulous!

Opening Dates

This book starts with several stories on the FMC's 'dates gone wrong.' Absolutely hilarious!!!!! This entire book is worth reading just to read those initial dates from hell.

I never recommend a book before finishing it, but e-mailed all my closest reading buddies and told them to drop whatever they had and read the dates.

FIVE nailed, limp, & sneezing word to yo muther stars.

Sam

The FMC, Sam, is one snarky, witty, jaded, cynical, and OCD/anxious bitch on wheels. And, no, before my GR girls even say it - this character was not based on me;)

"Watching him maneuver the fake waves was like Cinemax porn.. Not the real thing but close enough to make me wet and sorry I didn't bring my damn vibrator on the trip."

Her: "Are you really the sperm that won? About 180 million of you suckers shoot out a dick and yet you won? It's simply amazing."

Him: "First the whiskey dick comment and now talking about my cock. Seems to me you're pretty fixated with my junk."

Her: "Oh, yes, I am. So much so, that I'd like for it to go wee wee wee all the way home."

Behind the snarky cutting mouth, however, is a vulnerable 40-year-old recently divorced woman with a lot of insecurities and anxiety from a long, miserable, and unhealthy marriage. She's never known the passion, care, and security that accompanies a real man.... Until she meets younger Max and he rocks her world and bed.

While her mouth gets to be a bit much at times, she's a well written character with realistic flaws, fears, strengths, and relationships. I was personally able to relate to her on so many levels.

Mac

Mac has a wit and charm that perfectly counters Sam.

He's the guy that goes all caveman on your ass, doesn't even let another woman disrespect you, and pulls out your chair for you..... But also has no problems demanding you kneel and suck. He's what I call an aggressive gentleman.

I won't spoil Mac for you any further, but what you see is certainly not all you get. I did not see his character going the direction it did... AT ALL. It's not something that bothered me, but safety gang peeps might want to check out the spoiler at the bottom.

Plot

She's on a cruise with her BFF gals. He's on a cruise with a wedding party. There's a chase because she's stubborn, he's younger, she jaded, and he's intrigued. It's not overly angsty, but the author makes the characters work for it;)

What starts as a semi-anonymous romp at sea morphs into a what I can only assume would be ol' Hef's playboy version of a Disney Romance. ie it's a tame hot but sickeningly sweet, too.

The big question is can something at sea find a place on land, too?!?

The ultimate resolve is a little underwhelming.

The conclusion is HFN 3 months later.

Complaints...

I think the story had some excess fat, particularly between the 40-80% points, that could've been trimmed to make the flow and pacing better. It got a little slow and tedious for me with some excess scenes, like the baby birthing, that just really didn't add anything to the story IMHO.

Mac's big confessional didn't move me. Yes, the subject was horrifying, but the way it was written and presented to readers came across as more of a soap opera'esc 'aha' excuse purely designed to propel the story forward vs. it being a moment of truth for Mac and a moment of ultimate acceptance from Sam... which NATURALLY wouldve propelled the story forward.

The sex scenes are steamy, perfect length, and amount, but I kinda expected more ... Uhm, err, ... depth than some very mild bondage and a couple ass slaps ....considering....

Bottom Line

It's a solid rom-com with some fun, cheese, crackers, wine, and a little dirty martini. I'll def be reading more from this author.

The opening chapters - 5 stars
Overall - 3 1/2 stars

Trigger warnings- Cancer is a subtopic for a secondary character. Child abuse and suicide is spoken of in minor detail once. A baby in distress is birthed; the life or death is unknown.

Safety gang spoiler:

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Dibs is a fun, steamy read that had me laughing out loud. The characters are well developed and the story flows well. The sarcastic humor exhibited by the characters adds a delicious dimension that really elevates each one to the next level. It makes you love them and keeps you coming back for more. If you love books with hot alpha males, humor, super steamy times and the requisite HEA ending, then grab this book fast. It's a must-read that you won't put down!

I thought this was a fun, quick read. I have to admit I was not sure I could like Sam the first quarter of the book, but she grows on you. Mac is ridiculously hot, and definitely too good to be true. It's always better that way. The friends are great, and I hope there is a follow up with Juls and Blake's story.
