FRIENDSHIP AND BURGERS! Monsters and rent checks! A ghost from the past with questionable motives! Hellcat has more than enough to deal with as a crime-fighter, why does being Patsy Walker have to be so tough, too?
Kate Leth is a Canadian author and illustrator working in comics, animation, design, and feelings. A grown-up goth and pop culture devotee, Kate specializes in work for kids and teens. Their comics work includes Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat!; Girl Over Paris; Spell on Wheels; and Adventure Time, among others.
They live in Halifax, Nova Scotia with an absolutely ridiculous cat and several regrets. They are queer and genderfluid/non-binary, a fact that greatly influences their work. Kate uses they/them pronouns, but probably won’t correct you.
I LOVED this because it was good but also because my two favorite girls are in it and also I cried at seeing how everyone was in Patsy's phone with emoticons but I also was not completely sober
Okay. I am a fan. Seriously. I was laughing my way through this entire comic. After last issue we know that Patsy is now working retail. She has a 17 year old boss.
And she's still dealing with the fallout of her comic being re-released with random people coming to ask her personal questions.
And it looks like Patsy is about to whoop up on her frenemy Hedy who somehow scooped up the rights and is now reaping the monetary benefits of the comic being out there for public consumption again.
I cracked up at the scene with Patsy saying she needed at least 30 more seconds of rage. Girl I feel you. Sometimes you just need to feel the anger and put it way for a few seconds.
The plot is fairly straightforward in this one and we still have forward progression on Patsy's idea to start a superhero agency. I love that Patsy is living with Ian (telekinetic) who it seems has a crush on Patsy's childhood friend Tom.
There is a lot of humor in this comic and also it great about reflecting some of the reality in which celebrities live now. A scene where girls come up to Patsy to ask her questions and then one of them just takes her photo just made me cringe a bit inside. I have been out with people in D.C. before (we do get celebs here) and for the most part, we leave them alone. When you see Joe Biden strolling around, Hollywood celebs are not that interesting for the most part. But also, they are busy, what the heck is wrong with people going up to them to demand an autograph and picture. Or to just take their pic without permission.
Whoops, end rant.
We do get to see Patsy suit up in this one which was great. Mental note, don't call her kitten.
There is also a funny little reveal about who Patsy is friends with too.
Anyway I can't wait to read the next one which is showing an overall plot about an old enemy!
Again, not the most empowering super hero ever. Patsy begins working retail, mocking girls and women for their taste in clothing and butting heads with a pretty lax manager (she leaves to fight a petty thief, talks with her roommate for an extended period of time, texts, and more on the job). She loses said job and texts her super friends for an emergency meeting - to eat burgers with her because she had a bad day.
The saving graces with this issue for me was again Ian Soon and an adorable Squirrel Girl.
I am in love with this series! It's inclusion of other issues of Marvel universe comics makes me even more excited. My fiance enjoys the Marvel comic universe and has to tell me about original plot lines. He even had me studying the Marvel Wiki app at one point (of my own free will of course). I would love to start learning more for myself. Probably going to start by finding the Defenders issue they mentioned.
I really dig this version of Hellcat. Let's be real, your gut reaction is the costume is lame and are we really still cosplaying the catgirl look? Then you've got this creative team that says "Hell yeah!" and ups the cartoon look, ups the catlike features, and keeps it fun. Of course, I also wonder if this version might tick other people off for being too cute. Bully for them!
This book is super fun and colorful and I loved the cameos from some of Marvel's other great superheroes, but I'm not quite as engaged by this as I'd like to be. Will have to seriously consider whether to buy another issue.
Patsy has a new job that isn't going very well, an old friend is causing trouble and an old enemy reappears. Time for a super hero girls emergency meeting!
