A dominant leader flees the mafia, looking for a fresh start in a small town. He put all his effort into starting a business and resigned himself to a life without love. A neurotic germaphobe lives vicariously through the books she reads, preferring to play it safe in real life and hide behind her sarcastic remarks. “I am NOT that neurotic! I just have germ issues and I tend to over-analyze things. Sure, I second guess myself all the time and have a tendency to freak out over the small stuff. I’ll admit that I do ask a lot of “what if…?” questions. Fine. I’m neurotic.” One fateful day, the simple act of taking a wrong turn leads Violet right into Rocky’s life and completely turns it upside down. Accustomed to his orders being obeyed immediately and without question, Rocky doesn’t appreciate Violet challenging his authority at every opportunity. “I don’t like being told what to do. Especially when some arrogant tough guy thinks he can boss me around. I might have argued with him just to keep him close. He smelled like heaven. Although with a body like his, I knew he was no angel. Violet charmed her way into his heart with her quick wit and stubbornness, causing Rocky to fail at his many attempts to resist her. “He’d never met anyone like me before. I trash talk, curse like a sailor, and pretty much say whatever’s on my mind. Life is too short to pretend to be something that you’re not.” Rocky tries to keep his violent past hidden from Violet, but it suddenly catches up to him and he can no longer deny who he really is. Will Rocky turn his back on the life he built or stay and fight for what’s his? When Violet is faced with situations that rival anything she’s merely read about, will she be able to face her fears and work together with Rocky or will the truth tear them apart? “It’s one hell of a wild ride! Take a look inside the first few pages and I’ll tell you all about it.”
Follow the journey of Rocky and Violet as they take a dirty detour… Please note: As is often the case after “Boy Meets Girl” but before “Happily Ever After,” Steamy Bedroom Scenes will occur. Well….some of the steamy scenes actually take place outside the bedroom. You’ll have to read the book to find out more! This is a full length, stand-alone novel with no cliffhangers.
I would first and foremost like to thank everyone for taking the time to give my stories a chance. My goal is to take you out of your world, and all the stresses that go along with everyday life, and bring you into my world of romance and fantasy. I have a special weakness for hot alpha males and the feisty heroines who love them. Above all else, I hope you get a laugh out of my books. I aim to incorporate as much comedy into my romance as is humanly possible. My professional biography is as follows (I’m not sure why it’s in the third person, evidently that’s the rule): Grace is happiest when reading, eating Portillos hot dogs, and patiently waiting for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

★Review★
I was offered this an an ARC, but ended up grabbing from kindle unlimited. Either way this does not effect my review.
This was surprisingly enjoyable.
It was fun and quirky and I loved the characters.
The heroine was funny, a touch neurotic, and tbh, at times a bit overly naive!
The hero was a bit grouchy and bad at dancing but I liked him anyway.
The pacing of the story and the relationship was great, and even though it only took place over a matter of weeks, it managed to avoid feeling rushed!
All in it was a fun engaging read.
A few issues, was the heroine seemed to always ring her mom and best friend, and tell them exactly what had happened to her on an almost daily basis, which as the reader, since we had read what had happened made it seem a touch repetitive. And as I said, the heroine was a bit naive tbh, to not really realise what was staring her right in the face.
But all in I enjoyed it loved the hero and heroine, and the hero's group of friends were fun.
Yes, it is a bit far fetched at times, but this is billed as a "mafia comedy" so, it delivers :-)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Oh yes! That’s what I’m talking about!! A book that throws at you the unfolding of its story with such force and no warning that you don’t know where it came from! Plus, the intensity and the twists are off-the-charts!! But let’s take it from the start, shall we?
So, My Dirty Detour tells the way Rocky met Violet and how their love progressed. But don’t let the simplicity of it fool you. Well, here’s the thing. Rocky Duncan is a guy that owns an brewery with his friend. Although, that is the description of now-Rocky. The old Rocky was part of the Italian Mafia charter in NYC but he abandoned them after some ….. bad things that went down. So, now, he’s making his living bottling gin and lives a quite quiet life. And that’s where Violet comes in. (he he he ….;) ) A woman with some whims who lucks to take a wrong turn while returning home from an errand. And that’s how she enters Rocky’s settled life and makes his world upside down. And in that “upside down” steps his past on and comes back for a final encounter.
It may sounds like any other Mafia novel – and it is in some level – but, I guarantee, that this, is miles away from the usual Mafia stories. The things that makes it different are so many and so irresistibly amazing:
1. the incredibly entertaining interaction of Violet and Rocky, 2. the banter between her and Rocky’s friends 3. her whims that add another level of amusement 4. Violet & Rocky’s steamy scenes -Pheww!! *fanning myself* – 5. and so many others that can’t be said since their under SPOIL tag
My Dirty Detour redeems completely Grace Risata’s hard work over this novel and it puts her on my Watch-Out-This-Author list. Her writing is simply WOW, fantastic and sexy as hell that I couldn’t stop reading. Violet and Rocky’s story is an harmonic combination of feelings, humor, sexiness and Mafia that will make you unable to tear your eyes off its pages!
Violet McFadden, 34, lives a pretty ordinary life. That is until a little detour while running an errand one evening places her at the Grim Rock Distillery and into the sights of Sergio and Rocky. But Violet is looking for a little adventure and excitement, and Rocky Duncan, 29, is looking for a book keeper at his not so friendly business. An exchange of self-defense lessons for some secretarial work puts them both on a new road.
“He was either going to murder me or bury my body or we’d have a lovely moonlit evening. Fingers crossed for the latter!”
Rocky is a bit anti-social, guarded, and intimating. He’s the type of guy you don’t mess with, built and emanating an air of danger.
Violet isn’t exactly your typical heroine. Quirky is probably the best way to describe her. While she’s always been the wallflower and had a limited social life, she’s far from bland or mousey. At times she’s a ball of contradictions, a bit of a plain Jane who knows cars and guns as well as a germophobe who shops at thrift store. A reader herself, she has no tolerance for BS misunderstandings in romance novels, and I liked that about her.
“‘Grow up, fake book people!’”
But while Violet is pretty vocal and thus there is thankfully no BS misunderstanding break ups here, Violet could, however, stand to grow up a bit. She didn’t always act her age, and while sometimes I found her humorous, other times I just wanted to tape her mouth shut.
Told via Violet’s 1st person POV but with the occasional 3rd person sections for Rocky, the story is pretty long and a thorough edit would make it more manageable as there were places I skimmed on descriptions. Also Violet repeats everything that happens to her best friend and mother and not only was it repetitive, but it also made Violet seem really immature. After a while her mother and friend began to drive me nuts with how nosey and meddlesome they were. Rocky’s friends were far more interesting and made an entertaining addition to the story.
All in all, the story has a lot of potential, but could benefit from some tweaking in certain aspects. My Dirty Detour is an original standalone romantic-comedy-suspense.
It had been a long time since I had read a romance. But what am I saying? Yes, it has a romantic story, but it's way more than just romance, it's complete with the Mafia and some funny parts, three things you probably don't see together often. Also for those who like steamy sex scenes but dislike erotica for the lack of story, well maybe this is for you.
Violet the protagonist is a 34-year-old divorcee. She is supposed to have germ issue, but I think she is just a normal person. If she had that problem, she would have gone berserk a few times. That said, I always prefer male characters so it's no surprise that I preferred Rocky over Violet. He has his issues, but his heart is at the right place. We can sense how he loves Violet and how he doesn't want to hurt her. Great change from the regular jerks often seen in romance. (I still can't figure out why he always says that he is too old for that when he's only 29.) oh and I also have to mention Dmitri. I liked him too.
The one thing that threw me off a little the first time the author did it was when Violet repeated what happened to her mom and friend Stella. It got me worried it would get old fast. Violet does that a few times through out the story: To her mom, her friend, her boss, even with Rocky's friends. However, sometimes the way the author did it brought a smile to my face.
Overall, the story was good, I kept picking the book back to read just a little more, even at 2 AM in the morning.
My Dirty Detour by Grace Risata is a hot, funny, emotional book that took me in pretty quick. Violet is a divorced women who has only been with her ex-husband and is slow to get back into the dating field..but that is about to change! Violet takes a wrong turn when coming back from getting a tractor part for her mom's on again off again boyfriend. This put her into the path of Rocky who at first is very put off by her just 'finding him and his business' and check out her story at first. Then after clearing her story, Rocky partner/friend talks Violet into coming to work for them a few hours each day to get their books up today. Violet settles with Rocky that he will teach her to defend herself in pay for working on his books. Violet and Rocky get off on the wrong foot and it takes her leaving the job there for her and Rocky to work out there issues. Rocky and Violet are both attracted to each other...Rocky's friend starts to talk him into maybe dating Violet. Rocky has a rough past that makes him not believe that Violet can be as honest person as she is presenting herself to be. But once they both give into their attraction and things start looking better.... Rocky's past comes back. Can Rocky and Violet overcome all that their past have to get to the future they want? Really great book and would recommend it!!
his author is completely amazing. Her quirky and gutsy characters are awesomely well written. I could not get enough of the characters ans how they meshed so well together. Violet likes being in charge of her life even though it was pretty boring. When she decides to change her route home it was the beat decision of her life. She is the type of person that has no filter and met her match in a man who actually loved that about her. Rocky is loyal to who he considers family. He is also a secretive person who doesn't like people he doesn't know. But when he hired Violet he jus thought he hired someone to keep his business books in order. Not someone he cannot get out of his head and gave as good as she got. To him, Violet was an enegima. As the book went on, there was so much comedy and love that you couldn't help but want to read more of what will happen and what secrets would be revealed. I hope the author writes more about the rest of the characters because i want more. Especially if she keeps her women strong with no filters...those characters are my heroes and i want to be them.
What does a idiosyncratic, divorced, 34 year old female have in common with a man in his late twenties who just so happens to be part of the mafia? Absolutely nothing! But something about these two just seem to work. Maybe it was their first encounter or maybe it was further on in the relationship but something about these two just had me hooked from the first chapter.
Violet McFadden had a pretty simple life that only consist of going to work, talking daily to her mother or best friend and reading romance novels. What more can a person want? Love? Well being a certified "Germaphobe" with equally weird eccentricities, what guy would put up with that? Sure to Hell her ex-husband didn't. But Violets life will soon take a drastic turn when she is asked to go and do a errand for her mom. With her phone battery dead and getting lost on her way back home, Violet drives past a distillery and stops to ask to use the phone......Okay, so she asked for a sample as well but anyways... The last thing she thought she would find was the sexy owner with a bad attitude. Exchanges are made between the two and somehow the outcome resulted in her getting another job. Funny how things can happen so fast when one isn't paying attention.
Rocky Duncan just wants to live a undisturbed life. He was use to the hustle and bustle of New York's Mafia scene and now he just wants something else. With his best friend Sergio, they open a gin distillery in a quite little town and hope to just make something out of themselves. Just when some girl walks into his distillery, clearly ignoring the "No Trespassing" sign, what more can he do? Hiring her to do the books a few hours a day was the last thing on his mind but thanks to Sergio, he now has a new employee. Well at least he doesn't have to pay her actual money, he couldn't afford it if he wanted to. But knowing how he came off to her, he doubted she would even return the next day. So sure of it that he makes a bet with Sergio and then sadly looses.
Working at the distillery at night was something Violet didn't really care to do but when her payment was in the form of self defense lessons, she figured why not. Yes, Rocky with a complete jerk and had absolutely no people skills but he oozed raw sex appeal and that was good enough for her. Plus why would this man want a girl like her? She was way out of his league.
However lines soon become blurred when these two give in to their desires......well start to give into their desires. How desirable can someone be when they are drunk and puke on you? You be surprised what one will put up with when you like someone. Both Violet and Rocky soon start to actually form a relationship and surprise themselves with just how much they are willing to put up with from each other. But when Rocky's past comes back to rear it's ugly head, can he convince Violet that everything will work out? Or will he have to become the man he once was? Mix in a crazy set of supporting characters, plenty of witty banter, a "Ice Queen" and watermelon safe-words; this the is the book for you.
My Dirty Detour is Grace Risata's debut book and I could not have been happier with it. I did however read Nights in the Fast Lane first. It is Grace's second novel bu tdoes have some cross over parts. I loved it and wrote a pretty damn decent review (if I must say so myself). Okay so there were a few misspelled words but damn you spellcheck!!!!!! Anyway, I contacted the author on FB with a few questions and was asked if I was up to reading and reviewing My Dirty Detour. I quickly accepted. I did however go into reading this book with the assumption that "Nights" was my favorite but I was quickly mistaken. I found myself laughing like a crazy person at the way Violet interacted with not only with those close to her but Rocky, Sergio and the rest of his crew. Her girl next door persona was soon demolished when she opened her mouth to either ask a million questions or curse like a sailor. But somehow Rocky knew just how to put up with her. Yes, he was the typical alpha-jerk with tons of secrets and didn't want to open up his heart but when he stated:
"It was the easiest conversation I ever had with a girl. I could actually relax and just listen to her crazy stories without having to be on my game and be two steps ahead of her. Other girls...they all WANT something."
"Violet is just...well... Violet. She makes me think the world isn't a total shit hole."
It makes all of his jerkiness go away. He was down right protective of her and we find out the lengths he and his friends were willing to go in order to set his wrongs right and save Violet. Crap, who wouldn't like a guy who made sure you didn't die from salmonella poisoning? And didn't care if your safe-word was food related. Sounds like my kind of man, lol.
Side Notes: - I couldn't decide which one of Rocky's friends I liked better. Sergio? Or Dmitry? Both are hilarious and sexy but i can't wait until they find the one person who will set them straight and knock them down a few pegs.
-Violets inner thoughts were hilarious. They was she sizes herself up and describes others is just downright funny. Every girl does it and I am glad Grace actually included that everyday trait into Violet's character.
-This story does take place within a short period of time but somehow it felt as if this group knew each other for years. Their closeness and willing to stick up for each other showed us readers just the type of people they actually were. Someone who would be there for you through thick and thin.
Fantastic Job Grace and I can't wait to read more about this crazy group!!!!!
PS- So you were right. I do see why you liked this crazy group of characters but even though I did as well, I still think the "Nights" crew have a place in my heart.
This book had so much potential. Funny and witty but I only read 80% and lost interest. In my opinion...Violet, the female lead should have been a force to be reckoned with. But the author made her appear to be unattractive, turtle neck wearing and frumpy. So I guess I just lost interest and did buy into this badass hot monster wanting her as much as he did.
I was asked to read My Dirty Detour and give it an honest review. The title is currently available on Kindle Unlimited.
Let me just say here and now, I freaking LOVED it! Not only was it hilarious, I swear the main character is based off of one of my BFF’s. I had to call her and ask her, “Did you write a book and not tell me? because Violet is you!” When I went on and explained the neurotic mess this chick was, I think my friend was offended at first. Then I explained further; it was funny and the habits Violet have of over analyzing every little look and phrase, just like my friend does, we had to laugh. Because Violet is HER, OMG they are the same person! I think, in the end, it made my BFF feel better to realize she isn’t alone in her world of over-analyzing, freaking out, and beating a dead horse. Progress was made! HA! I told her about the part where Violet made a plan to go to a food festival, so she could map out her eating, my BFF ADMITTED, she does the same thing! OMG, I spit my drink out and nearly choked to death laughing when she divulged that tidbit!
“I can’t just walk down the street and randomly eat whatever’s there! What if I fill up on crap at the first few booths, and then I have no room at the end, where there’s better stuff? That would be heinous. I need my chart!"
Violet is so quirky; one moment freaking out about not being able to eat red meat, the next, she is jazzed about shooting an AK47! Her language could rival a truck driver, yet she can be so ridiculously naïve and innocent at times. It’s no wonder Rocky fell hard and fast for her. She is so completely honest, and refreshing you can’t help but love her. She says whatever pops into her brain, and isn’t the high maintenance girly girl he is accustomed to.
Rocky is exactly what Violet needed, she needs a man that can handle her brand of crazy, and not go running for the hills. Things did not go smoothly to start; Rocky fought his attraction to Violet, for fear that demons from his past would bite him in the ass. Yet, all it took, was another man moving in on Violet, and he claimed what was his. I LOVED IT! Rocky sees only Violet, and is totally into her quirks and all. He is also EXACTLY what she needs for her self-esteem!
“I always think you’re beautiful. You turn me on no matter what you wear. But I like you best in nothing at all, with your hair all messed up after I fuck you. Never forget that.”
Don’t you just love that? I know I did!
Violet and Rocky’s story is truly Epic, Grace Risata gave so much depth and character to, not only Violet and Rocky, but to all of her characters. Every character had a distinct personality; they were clear in my mind, and I either loved or hated them. She really didn’t give me and in between; they were either for Violet, or against her.
I am giving My Dirty Detour a HUGE 5 Boundless stars, and that’s only because I can’t give it a 10, I absolutely LOVED it!...Sara
Star Ratings: Heroine (Violet): an immature 34yr old “I met a guy. His name is Rocky. I really like him but I don’t think he likes me back”
Hero (Rocky): a loudmouth 29yr old Plot: DNF – did not hold my attention Grovel: DNF Cheating: DNF HEA: DNF Triggers: DNF
Average score: 1 star – DNF’d at 20%
Best Lines: h’s thoughts: “hope for the best, prepare for the worst”
Worst Lines: H describing h: “was she a short, pathetic-looking, ditz with fuzzy hair?” – h gets annoyed that he called her a ‘ditz’ but I am more annoyed that he called her ‘pathetic-looking’
H to h: “you’re the woman. The man pays for things”
Personal Review: Love story between a 34yr old female accountant (who is supposed to be funny but just comes across as trying too hard) and a 29yr old male ‘business-owner’ (who is very shouty!).
I still don’t understand why/how the h and H met and the story was too boring for me to continue with it.
The annoying bit: h is not being paid for working for H
I wanted the h to realise what she was doing and hoping it would go something like this
Random Ramblings: •I liked Stella, everyone should have a sensible Stella in their lives •H was an asshole to h in the beginning and the h was a complete pushover •I don’t like the older h/younger H thing and never will
This was the best laugh out loud book I've read in a long time. I honestly felt like I was watching a movie,in fact, this book should be made into a Rom Com. Violet is so quirky that you will find yourself snorting out loud at her crazy comments. Rocky is the big adorable alpha male who tries to make her behave, but he has little luck. Do yourself a huge favor and read this book. You won't be disappointed, just sad when it ends.
I received this book as a free giveaway through Goodreads. What a wonderful surprise. It is sure to be a hit as a beach read this summer. It is like reading a friends journal or having a good old gossip session with a girlfriend. I enjoyed it tremendously.
OMG OMG OMG ... How I hate working when I’m in a major crazy story like this one! I had to call my mom during my car’s rides to not read it, I hardly avoided to bump in any of the streetlights while walking or fall in any rabbit hole! Welcome in my boring working days when reading an awesome full of craziness story! I so adore my gang of new misfit best friends! Violent and Rocky are definitively a must in the lovers range! His harshness which changes to softness when she is around, her freak outs he calms with few words, he quiets her, she frees him, they are total opposites and so similar at the same time. And Dmitry, I love him, behind his sarcasms, there is a strong man with a damaged history, like for Sergio and his narcissism love! I hope there will be sequels taking care of them! I went all crazy when I had to turn the lights off to grab some hours of sleep, I hate my 5am alarm! I do not even when to begin to sum up this book, in fact, I can’t! Each turn of a page is a new adventure, how to overcome our fears, go past our mistakes, accept what life through on your path, and much of all have fun and live! I read some complains about the sex scenes, I love them, even in the bedroom we can laugh, who never suck in her stomach to look thinner, does not like certain positions as not very glamorous or not so orgasm inducing and does not swallow some body releases because it doesn’t taste like chocolate... I like all the silliness of the characters, it makes them unique and lovable, they quickly became like a family to me, I already miss them from their hilarious banters to their incredible interactions between each others. So excuse me but I’m jumping in the next book to go back to them.
Okay, I’m back for a few seconds, usually when I write a review I have the need to try to sum up the storyline, but here the blurb is just perfect, it tells what we will find, it is like a movie trailer but so much better, the book will be what it written in the blurb plus so much more, you won’t be sad, you will cry, you won’t smile, you will laugh, you won’t snort, you will pee, you won’t laugh, you will roll on the floor, all is exponentially true!
4.5 stars. OK firstly I have to say I am totally addicted to this author's books and have one clicked them all. Violet McFadden is a 34 year old neurotic, germophobic with no brain to mouth filter divorcee and I absolutely LOVED her. Rocky owns a gin distillery that seems to be operating mysteriously under the radar, and for good reason! When Violet takes a wrong turn and ends up at the distillery her life becomes unintentionally way more interesting. This had some real laugh out loud moments (got some really strange looks when reading this in local coffee shop!) with a great ensemble cast of characters some of whom are just crying out for their own books Dmitry and Sergio please. I am not a big fan of Mafia based stories but this was absolutely brilliantly played out. Another great read by this author who has now become one of my authors to watch out for new works. Highly recommended fun read.
I'd love to give this book more than 5 stars. Grace Risata has a fine sense of humour and shares it with us in this absolute gem of a book. Violet is naïve and totally neurotic. Hates being told what to do and is damned stubborn. Rocky, our hero in this romance, is used to absolute obedience and being a man of mystery...until Violet takes a wrong turn and ends up on his doorstep... Brilliant characters, hilarious lines and scenes. Fast moving and never dull. BRILLIANT!
i thoroughly enjoyed this book. i received anarc for an honest review. i love how the author makes Violet so relatable. i love how she makes Violet and Rocky relationship so real. i loved everything about it. Awesome read by this author.
This was my first time to read anything By Grace Risata, I was gifted a copy buy the author, I enjoyed Violet & Rocky story from start to finish. This story had me laughing out loud & Couldn't put it down. It was well writing story, I would highly recommend it to everybody, Go on ONE-CLICK NOW
What a total blast this story was. I loved the characters. I loved their banter. I loved the organised crime connection. I loved the pain and sacrifice. I just loved it, mostly!
Firstly, the book cover and title didn’t sell the story to me, sadly, so if you think about reading this book, believe me when I say the writing and storyline is so much better than the title and cover portray it to be. As you read the story the title becomes clearer. As outlined in the synopsis, it’s about a germaphobe, although the story is not entirely focussed on Violet’s condition, it just adds to the overall humour that the story carries with it throughout the book. The detour part is pretty much self explanatory as Violet, unwittingly stumbles across a gin distillery when she gets lost in her car. Inside the distillery, Violet finds the real deal and it’s not what the company bottles!
After escaping the underworld control of New York, a group of Italian and Russian friends have set up shop in Pineville and with a solid business venture, they are trying to keep their noses clean. What Violet finds though is two impossibly handsome men: one with a playboy image; Sergio, and the other with a dark and brooding personality; Rocky. After trying to evict Violet, rudely, from their premises, and failing, Violet offers to work for them in return for self-defense classes, courtesy of Rocky. Rocky, reluctantly, agrees and expecting Violet to run scared from him, doesn’t expect her to turn up for work but she does and it’s not long before she’s engrained in the business and the proprietors’ lives.
All of the story’s characters all held a special place in my heart. Rocky, for obvious reasons, and Sergio, well because of his cheeky personality, but also the Russian/Ukrainian contingency: Irina, Vasily and Dmitry. As expected, with such a group of misfits, readers are treated to a captivating story as we’re carried along with them and lay witness to their various antics. This story is seriously funny and it had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. I was hesitant to read a mob style comedy but it somehow worked, really well.
What didn’t work so well, for me, and some other readers alike, was the slightly immature relationship that Violet has with her mother; Frankie, and her friend; Stella. I could easily have lived without those parts of the book and that part of the story nearly, very nearly, led me to DNF this book. The number of times that Violet recounted her sexual interactions with her mother and friend were not necessary and took the overall shine off the book. In my, humble, opinion, if those parts of the story were to be heavily edited then this book would be a sure-fire hit. But I read on and I am happy that I did. The remaining story was brilliantly penned.
The author’s personality certainly comes across in this book, and also on her website, with her hysterically funny blog posts. What I can’t believe is that Grace has so few Facebook and blog followers. It’s such a shame that the wider book world have yet to meet the wonderfully quirky personality and comedic writing style that Grace Risata demonstrates.
So, if, like me, you love your mafia books with a hint of humour (although in this case it’s more of a significant dollop), then give this book a try. I personally feel it is very similar to the Eagle Elite series, written by Rachel Van Dyken, which also portrays a lighter side to the underworld darkness.
Well done Grace, keep on writing, keep on entertaining us and keep on making us laugh!
We are proud to provide honest and unbiased reviews written from the heart.
At first this story started a little slow for me. Then it picked up like you wouldn't have believed. I personally am not a fan of mafia stories. I don't know why, but I'm not. However, this story was great! It had amazing dialogue (I laughed quite a few times) and a great story. I LOVED the bit about the zombie apocalypse... it was award winning ( but then again, I'm into that stuff) for this being the authors first book, it's AMAZING. There is lots of detail and the plot is great. I'll definitely be reading more.
Was a very very good read. Was straight into the story and had a lot of omg moments as well as edge of your seat. I loved the chemistry between Rocky and Violet. I had so many giggles and kinda wanting to go looking to see if the others have books.
You never know where you will end up when you take the detour home.
This book had me laughing out loud. I loved every bit of this. Getting to know Violet, her best friend, and her mom. They are so great to have as a family! I also didn't mind meeting the group of men that are working the distillery either. Nice on the eyes, to say the least. Rocky and Violet go at each other with snark, wit, sarcasm, and charm like none other. They can't seem to keep their mouths shut around one another, that is how I seem to be, just ask around. Grace did a great job keeping me turning the pages of this and I am so honored to have had the chance to read this book.
I can not wait to see what is going to come of the rest of this series. Let's see shall we...
This is not my normal read (mafia/gangster/etc.) But the author personally contacted me, and I have a hard time saying no. I figure if the author can go out of her way to personally ask me, I can take time to read it and give my honest opinion especially since I feel that, despite having my preferences, I can usually look beyond my biases to give it a fair review. I did not accept the author's offer of a complimentary copy, though, and instead bought it from Amazon.
First of all, whoa. I wasn’t not expecting this. At first, I felt the writing was a bit long winded. The first couple pages seemed filled with endless descriptions that I didn’t care about. That stopped there. Once Violet meets Rocky (within the first couple pages) it only gets better and the writer flows smoothly.
I loved Violet. I honestly related with her a lot on multiple levels from her love of organization to her wanting to try new things but not really follow through to her hesitance with Rocky. Omg their interactions are just the best! At first, Rocky is a raging d***, but that changes. Honestly, Violet’s interactions and dialogue with him mirrored my own and how I would have done it. She is such a strong character but different from what other typically consider strong. What others would see as giving up, I saw as the strength to walk away, from abuse she didn’t need and a situation that made her unhappy. Staying didn’t make her strong, walking away did. And Rocky truly redeems himself on multiple counts.
I don’t want to ruin any of the story for you because it is one of the best I have read in this genre. You can truly feel the blood, sweat, and tears the author put into this novel. It is such an intense powerful read both plot wise and erotically, that I had to put it down a couple times to pull myself together. The cast of characters is amazing. The steamy scenes full of fire. And the writing is spot on. Risata is clearly a skilled writer and story teller who knows how to bring everything together to make an entertaining story. So if you are looking for a powerful yet hot and hilarious Alpha male romance featuring a strong female, look no further!
Oh my gosh! This book was so hilarious! I mean laugh out loud funny. I'm pretty sure I snorted a few times too.
Violet takes a wrong turn and tries to get directions on how to get back to the main road which ends up being one of the best mistakes she's ever had. Violet is a say it like she see's it kind of girl. Her mom and her best friend hears all about her life via phone calls that she makes. She's close to both of them and even though we've already read it about it once, you'll read it again while she's telling it to her best friend. This is the only thing I didn't like about the book. THE ONLY THING!!!! (I skimmed these parts once I realized what it was.)
Violet is that "one friend" that we all have or possibly you're that "one friend." She says whatever she's thinking. Even if it's not the best time or the best situation, she's going to word vomit. It does get her into some trouble but I was laughing so hard because "she's that friend". Could totally see the conversations happening in real life.
If Violet would have paid attention to the clues that Rocky and his friends left that she didn't pick up on she wouldn't have been so surprised by who and what he was before he came to her town.
Rocky is a hot alpha guy that takes no sh*tuff from anyone. He's very loyal to his friends and who he considers his. When he first meets Violet he wants nothing to do with her. She's so different from every woman he's ever known. He finds her quirks funny and helps her with them. (Wait till you read about the hamburger incident. It will make you giggle.
After the dust, bullets, and fists stop flying will Violet be able to handle the man Rocky really is and will Rocky want her to? Can they stay themselves or do they need to change to be who the other one needs?
I definitely recommend this book! It's freaking hilarious!
Violet McFadden has had a pretty normal and low key life. She works as a secretary and bookkeeper in a local business, spends time with her best friend, talks to her mom pretty much everyday, and loves to read. That all changes when she gets lost and stumbles into Rocky Duncan's business looking for directions. Violet was something else, a bit of a contradiction; sassy, yet reserved, skiddish, yet forward. She was a strong female lead and I found her quite endearing. Rocky was a bit of an enigma. He was tough, closed off, and a bit of jerk, but there was just something about him that draws you in (other than the fact that he's drop dead gorgeous.) With a slew of secrets, he knows he's not the kind of guy that should get mixed up with a woman, especially a woman as naive and innocent as Violet. Their chemistry couldn't be denied though and they both found it hard to resist one another. When lies are revealed and the past catches up with Rocky, will these two have a chance at any kind of relationship? Has Rocky's past and the secrets he hides put Violet in danger? My Dirty Detour had a great mix of action, romance, and comedy. Risata used the budding romance between Violet and Rocky to build tension; those two were smoldering. Then she adds in the anticipation of finding out Rocky's secrets as well as the action and excitement that comes along with them. I was on the edge of my seat one minute, swooning another, and laughing out loud the next. This is my first book by Grace Risata and it won't be my last.
I was contacted by the author personally to read this book and write a review. After reading her other book, I was completely on board!
Violet is a germophobic divorcee who is slightly neurotic and has little to no filter on her mouth. With that being said. I absolutely loved her! She takes life as she knows it, and runs with it every minute. One day she's out running an errand and takes a wrong turn. This means she ends up on a back road with no idea where she is or where she is going. She stops into the first place she sees, Grim Rock Brewery, to ask for some help and directions. What she is met with is anything but pleasant or helpful. However, in a roundabout way, she ends up with a part-time job that pays her no money. Curious what that means? Read the book! (I don't want to give it all away!!) Anyway, Violet ends up in a relationship with Rocky and that is where the problems start to arise. Their relationship is great. But, others don't necessarily approve. Come to find out, Rocky is related (in a round about way) to the mafia and his ex doesn't appreciate who he is with now. This is where it gets serious. A little levity is written in to help lighten the mood in otherwise depressing situations.
Grace Risata has become my new favorite author! She has a great way of writing what people are thinking...and then they say it out loud! In real life people don't always filter what they say. They aren't always nice. Life isn't always easy. I know books are supposed to be an escape, but Risata's books are a great mix of fiction and reality. I look forward to more of her writing!
Germaphobe, plain, average, a pushover, crass, a divorcee; this is how many people would describe Violet when she accidentally wanders into the Grim Rock Distillery, run by a total asshole named Rocky. After a messy first meeting, she trades her book-keeping skills for weekly fight training from Rocky, whose finances are a hot mess. She ends up sorting out more than just the giant box of crumpled bills and gains the respect of her new coworkers. Well, except for Rocky. He's a douche sandwich that constantly spends his time shoving his nastiness down Violet's throat when she's really invaluable to his business. Ya gotta wonder why she stayed.
But people change, seasons change, and some other shit, and Rocky sees that being a douche sandwich doesn't get shit done and that he needs Violet to sort out his hella messy life. He's had a tough go of things and Violet's no-nonsense, but honest, demeanor appeals to him in a strange, and new, way. Violet can say the same about her mysterious boss who slowly helps her crawl out of her shell and heal from her divorce, which left her more subconscious and lonely than ever. But Rocky has just as many secrets as he does muscles.
Violet and Rocky both evolve in this delightful book where truths are exposed and characters are pushed to their personal limits. Much like Risata's other book, I found myself reading at every available moment, just to see what happened next. It had sex, a band of flashy Russians, a plain Jane who could be any of us, and a hot guy with a bad streak and a heart of gold.
This is the first book of Grace Risata’s that I have and honestly I’m well impressed.... Whilst I am able to not put a book down when I am really enjoying the story I have to say that this is completely different. I was hooked from page one, I had no idea what this book would involve but I can tell you know that those books with all the billionaire’s are honestly put to shame. I don’t mean to sound harsh about other books because I know that authors have spent their time and effort into writing them, but this book that Grace has written is honestly touching. It’s down to earth and it’s real, if you look between the billionaire type of books and this book then out of the two the book that is more real to real life is going to be Grace’s..... I actually prefer that, after so long the Billionaire type of guys can get annoying, so the fact that Grace has took a different is honestly amazing.
If I could rate this book out of anything then I’d have to say I’d give it a 7 out of 5 stars, yes I know that some of you think that why would I rate a book that high, but honestly you need to read this book for yourself as honestly that’s the only way that you’re going to understand. This book is about a girl who had been previously married and had gone off the idea of looking for love, but after a little adventurous detour she ends up meeting the one guy that changes her simple quiet life for good. Honestly I was hooked from the start and honestly I want to read more about Violet and Rocky, they are such amazing characters and hopefully you’ll enjoy reading about them too.
Violet recognizes she has issues, but she’s willing to explore new avenues, within certain neurotic boundaries. When she takes a detour one night, little does she realize the epic changes her life is about to undergo. Rocky has a past he’s trying to forget, but when Violet stumbles into his business little does he expect the explosive impact her arrival will have on the new life he has created.
This one will definitely make you laugh out loud, stay up late reading, and search for TV shows entitled “Mafia Princesses” (LOL). Violet, with all her anxieties and hang-ups, is a snarky, bold, wants to stand on her own two feet kind of woman, with panic attacks and absolutely no mouth filter. Rocky with all his anti-social behavior is a bit of a dark soul with a tortured past, but he’s hot and he quickly cares for Violet, so he definitely can’t be all bad. These are characters you will enjoy meeting and definitely want to get to know better, along with most of the side players.
There is a lot of the dialogue you will probably be able to relate to. I often found myself thinking I would have said that or wish I had. The interactions between the players is so enjoyable, you’ll easily become engrossed in the story and won’t want to put it down. The characters are delightful and quirkily charming (most of them anyway) 😉. I highly recommend this fast-paced and extremely engaging love story. It’s definitely one you must read and will be one you will want to put on your “to be read again” shelf!!
This is the first book I have read by this author and I really love the way she writes in this book.
I felt I was right there when Violet was giving the guys a hard time. Violet character is absolutely hilarious. When she first meets Rocky and Sergio you can tell she's terrified and uneasy but she doesn't let that show and gives as good as she gets.
I also really liked how the characters Dmitry, Irina, Vasily, Sergio, Rocky are their own 'family' and it's funny how they play off each other and have each other's backs. I like how the author has described the characters so that you really know who they are. We know that Sergio is a player and that Irina wears the pants in Vasily and hers relationship. Dmitry is very quiet but you know without a doubt if you only had to chose one he's the one you'd pick to have your back.
Because of Rocky's background he's unused to having his orders questioned and has a hard time dealing with Violet and her attitude. It's not long before he softens up and goes to extreme measures to protect Violet from the repercussions of his past.
At the end of the book this 'family' bands together to have Rocky's back and to protect Violet.
This book had many, many laugh out loud moments. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The only thing I had a hard time with was wanting to skip ahead because this is a long book to see how it ended but I refrained myself and glad I didn't but the anticipation just about killed me.
