The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are the most common infections of the world’s poor, but few people know about these diseases and why they are so important. This second edition of Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases provides an overview of the NTDs and how they devastate the poor, essentially trapping them in a vicious cycle of extreme poverty by preventing them from working or attaining their full intellectual and cognitive development.
Author Peter J. Hotez highlights a new opportunity to control and perhaps eliminate these ancient scourges, through alliances between nongovernmental development organizations and private-public partnerships to create a successful environment for mass drug administration and product development activities. Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases also
• Addresses the myriad changes that have occurred in the field since the previous edition. • Describes how NTDs have affected impoverished populations for centuries, changing world history. • Considers the future impact of alliances between nongovernmental development organizations and private-public partnerships.
Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases is an essential resource for anyone seeking a roadmap to coordinate global advocacy and mobilization of resources to combat NTDs.
Peter J. Hotez is an American scientist, pediatrician, and advocate in the fields of global health, vaccinology, and neglected tropical disease control. He serves as founding dean and chief of the Baylor College of Medicine National School of Tropical Medicine in the Department of pediatrics and holds the Texas Children's Hospital Endowed Chair in Tropical Pediatrics.
This is perhaps the first time I have truly read a textbook from cover to cover and I have to say I enjoyed it every step of the way. Dr. Hotez combines intense passion, deep empathy, and intricate science to bring light to the global health crisis that are the neglect tropical diseases. I am leaving this book with a renewed passion for public health and feeling inspired, so much to that it may even lead to a slight career change.
I don’t give out 5 stars lightly in Goodreads, so the fact that I’m giving one for an academic text is a huge deal. Highly recommend.
5⭐️ Really accessible book that talks about NTDs and the global importance of these diseases on the worlds poorest populations. Definitely a bit outdated at this point but still a really interesting read about NTD advocacy and control measures around the world.
Hotez presents once of the best arguments for why Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are important in the world today. I'm quite familiar with the literature that the book is based on, but I was amazed at how Hotez presented the information clearly and concisely that would be accessible to virtually any reader.
