A short and sweet second chance novella featuring Alex's brother, Emmett, and the one who got away, Annie. This novella can be read as a stand alone, even though it is book #3.5 in the interconnected Over series.

Honestly, I wished that this one could have been a bit longer so that we could really get to know the characters. It was still was able to pack a punch, but I just didn't feel the incredible connection that Emmett and Annie supposedly shared. I still rooted for them to find their way back to each other though and I really enjoyed their jabs and silly banter. Luna was also a fun addition and she brought some wonderful humor to the story. One of the best parts though, was being able to catch up a bit with Alex and West! Overall, this was a great addition to the Over series!

“Our souls were like opposing magnets, the attraction stronger than either of us could resist.”

Emmett Fontaine serendipitously found the one a few days before he was moving to continue with his career, or so he thought. After a few days of intensity and passion, and what for him felt like love, Annie shoved him out of her life leaving him heartbroken. Fate interferes again when he goes back home to visit his family for the holidays, cornering him in to sharing the same building. Can he get past his hurt in order to get the answers he couldn’t get five years ago? Especially now that he comes face to face with not just Annie but also a little mini version of her?
“She was a tornado, swooping into my life and pulling me into her current… but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Like all natural disasters, she spit me back onto the dirt, my maimed heart lying beside me, barely pumping.”

Annie Frederick made the biggest mistake of her existence when she vanished Emmett from her life without explanation. But he’s back, taunting her with what she had been missing. Will she be brave enough to reveal her secrets or will she keep shutting out because losing him again would be unbearable?
“Is it possible to love a little girl I’ve only seen once?”

I would love to delve more into this sweet and mushy story, but I don’t want to give much more away. J.A. is an author that makes me enjoy every single word she writes and I was truly excited when I found out she would be giving us this small story within a series I’ve enjoyed very much.
“I wanted to burn for someone… for them to burn for me... Then I met you.”

Frost Over Fire is novella #3.5 in J.A. Derouen’s Over series. It’s a wonderful addition to it the series and can be read as a standalone. It’s a contemporary second chance romance, told from both points of view with a sugary sweet ending. I can’t wait to read the rest of the stories in this anthology.

This book was amazing! The way Annie and Emmett came back in each other’s life is so beautiful! I love that Emmett is all in and want to be a part of not only Annie but also Luna her life. It is so lovely! Perfect book to read at this time of year with the holidays coming up!

Short and sweet

I love a good second chance book, and for this to be a short story, it had a lot of romance. Emmett and Annie fell fast and hard, were separated by circumstance, and brought together again. This is a sweet story that if you love second chances, this one is for you.

How have I never read anything by J.A. DeRouen?? I have had a couple of her books on my Kindle for a while now, but they kept getting shoved further and further down my TBR list. So when I picked up this little novella, I was interested in a quick read. I hadn't expected to fall in love with Fire Over Frost (I'm not a big novella reader) and become so interested in these characters that I needed to catch up with the others.

Needless to say, I'm binge-reading the rest of the series now!

J.A. DeRouen never disappoints! I loved how this short story included everything thats so awesome about her Over series - fantastic writing, hot chemistry, and a swoon worthy man. Emmitt is awesome, and I loved getting some West from Wings Over Poppies in there as well. Can be read as a standalone.

I loved this doofus!

"Her mouth moves over my body in soft touches, light whispers, and I enter her on a prayer. My body moves in perfect harmony with hers as I pray to possess her from this moment on. I silently beg her to never leave me again, because I know I won’t survive this time." ❤

Wow. I loved this. Short and sweet and funny.

I'm so glad to have Emmett's story. I wondered about him after finishing Alex and West's story.

Annie and Emmett were instant love and fiery passion. She left and neither could move on, despite life moving on around them. Fate steps in and drops him at her doorstep five years later. Fireworks fly and passion flares again. When Emmett falls, he goes all in and wastes no time.

I loved this sweet second chance romance.

So much packed into this.

For such a short story, it's packed. It's a second chances romance, with the insta love, no holds barred. Then with a little twist. Very cleverly done. Definitely going to have to read the rest of the series, if the author could do so well with just a few pages!

Quick, second chance

This story was a quick, second chance story and was quite over the top on the insta-love but with a twist. The insta-love was in the past followed by quick brakes and a burned heart. Fast forward five years, and a freak weather storm places them across each other's path.

It was good to get another glimpse into the another side character in the Over series, but I really wished it had been longer and the characters a little more developed, but it fit for the plot.

After binging the whole Over series in about a week, I thought this novella was the perfect end.

This was a hot second chance short story that I finished in about an hour or so.

I love this series and I hope to get to visit these characters again

I’m not exactly the bah-humbug type, but I’ll admit to being less than filled with holiday cheer each December. No need to go into all the reasons, but this time of year I start looking for sweet, cute holiday books to cheer me up...get me feeling jolly...you catch my drift. And because this time of year is inevitably so busy, if that book is a novella - even better!

But Fire Over Frost? It left me feeling rather chilly…

I started out not liking the hero, at all. I don’t care if you’re hot. I don’t care if all the ladies can’t resist you. And I certainly don’t care to hear about all that from YOU. Then, when you make a plan to use other women to make the woman you “love” jealous? There’s really no coming back from that for me.

Emmett and Annie met five years ago and had a hot-and-heavy three day affair. Emmett fell head over heels, Annie was trying to figure out how they could make things work (he was heading off to medical school four hours away from where she had a teaching job), they had found their person to have their happily-ever-after with!

But then Annie never showed up for plans they had made that third night, and when Emmett tracked her down, she told him she never wanted to see him again. Emmett was devastated to lose the love of his life (of three days…), and proceeded to go from woman to woman to woman. Have I mentioned how much I despise this kind of “hero” behavior?

Fast forward five years and Emmett is on his way home for Christmas, and as luck would have it, the garage apartment he is staying in for the week is right next to the house Annie and her daughter are renting. A couple of conversations, a few heated looks, and one ice storm later and they are back together for their happily-ever-after.

I will give the author credit for having the secret child plot not go the way I thought it was going to (although I did have it figured out before the reveal...a hazard of reading too much, I suppose). However, the whole rest of the story was so hard to believe. Even allowing for some latitude because of the short number of pages, I couldn’t understand why the hero was SO heartbroken, or why they were both convinced the other was the love of their life, because the crux of their problems was from them NOT TALKING. If not for the plot going in an non-cliched route, this one would have been a complete dud.

Hopefully my next holiday book will be better and get me in the right mood. Right now, it’s looking like it’ll take a Christmas miracle.

* thank you to the author for providing a free copy as a member of her email newsletter; a review was not requested in exchange for the copy ... and I'm betting she'd probably wish I hadn't given one

Emmett and Annie had something amazing between them about 5 years ago, but then it was over before it could truly begin. Emmett never really got over that heartbreak and Annie never forgot him. Now, they are essentially neighbors and with the bad weather, they are stranded together. For a guy who doesn't commit, it was sweet to see Emmett fall in love all over again and this time, be able to keep Annie.

J.A. once again nails it out of the park. I absolutely loved this short story. She made me fall in love with Emmett, Annie and Luna in such a short amount of time. What an amazing second chance love story that just so happens to coincide with Christmas. **Sigh** Who would have thought that Emmett would end up in an apartment for the weekend so close to the woman he loved in college? Not only does he end up next to Annie for then he comes face to face with an adorable little girl, who he thinks may be his. Is Luna Emmett's daughter? Guess you'll have to read it to find out. My only regret with this story is that it's not longer and you are left wondering how Emmett and Annie are doing after the story ends. There are so many more things I could say about this story, but then it would contain spoilers and I don't want to do that to you!

In Fire Over Frost, we are introduced to Emmett Fontaine (yep, he is a member of the Fontaine family!) This story can definitely be read as a stand alone, but if you have read J.A.'s other amazing books, there are some small guest appearances from past characters. I just loved this short story, which for me is saying something. If I don't already know the characters, short stories usually don't have enough length to get me fully invested. But this one definitely does. Emmett and Annie's story is about getting a second chance at love and making sure to grab hold of it and never let go. You will swoon, laugh, giggle, and fan yourself from the sexy times. Emmett is hot, Annie is awesome, but Luna stole my heart.

*I have this short story in the Hot for Holidays Antrology*

This was a great short story. One of the best ones I've read in a long time. It may be short, but it has everything you want in a great story without leaving you feel like you've been cheated by the low word count.

Sweet, sexy and a bit humorous, this Holiday story is sure to warm your heart.

If you're a fan of her Over series, you'll love this story. Well written and I really enjoyed Emmett and Annie's story. And Luna, she is just the cutest!

Fairy tale ending really can happen, especially over Christmas. It is the most magical time of the year, after all.

This is a cute standalone short (although if you know Alex and West from Wings Over Poppies we get a satisfying glimpse into their HEA, yay!)

Emmett is an adorable med school resident, who doesn't do relationships. Annie is the one that got away...in a flash. When fate throws them back together, several years later, can they put the hurt their past has caused aside and realize they are each other's future?

Loved it, especially cutie patootie Luna! Love this slow Southern charm world J.A. has created :)

This is a new short story in The Over Series. It takes place when Emmett Fontaine heads home, from his medical residency, to visit family over Christmas break. He runs right into Annie, the one that got away, and broke his heart. To his surprise and awe she has a beautiful little girl with pig tails. Is there something she forgot to tell him?

This is a wonderful story filled with rediscovery, love and wonderful humor. Brew a cup of cocoa and join some Over Series characters for some holiday fun.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Emmett is a medical resident who is taking a much needed Christmas break to visit his family.

Annie is the unexpected co-tenant in the house he is staying at for the visit...and the girl who broke his heart 5 years ago.

The story flashes back and forth between 5 years ago and present day. It is a novella, so doesn't have a whole lot of time for character development, but I think the author does a good job of setting the stage in a short time. It is a sweet story, and I would give it 4 stars.

I love everything this author writes. She has such an amazing voice and writing style with characters that leap off the page. I always think they're real people, living out there in the real world, continuing on with life long after the story is over. This is a wonderful addition to the Over Series!

A super quick read that takes us back to Providence, LA with Emmett and Annie. These are new characters that are connected to characters from the Over series, but there are no spoilers to be worried about.
We get to see the power of true love, even when it's been denied for several years.
